Their soup dumplings are the best in this area hands down- the wrapper is thin but not fragile, plenty of soup, and the free basket promotion is a really good deal. Not only do they have very good shanghainese dishes, they also have three cup chicken! I have not been able to find anywhere that served a decent three cup chicken in Brooklyn. The small green chili peppers with beef is actually spicy, which is also rare because spicy chinese dishes are hard to find in this area. One very negative criticism is their recent price increase. Several dishes, including the three cup chicken, had prices go up almost 20% with a seemingly smaller portion size. I ordered lunch this morning and they forgot to put the rice inside the order. When I call back and the front desk said I have to give tips to the driver again if he resend the rice to us ! 2.5 stars Was so excited to see a new Shanghainese restaurant open up in the area but it ended up being a disappointment...We came here for lunch right when they opened so we got seated right away. Compared to traditional Shanghainese restaurants, this one is a bit more vibrant as the lights are bright and the walls are plastered with cute cartoon characters. Service was very nice and attentive. Pork soup dumplings- A lot of restaurants are guilty of serving frozen packaged soup dumplings but the ones here seem to be handmade. The skins were very thin but didn't break and the meat and soup inside was delectable Scallion pancake with sliced beef- The pancake was crispy but the inside was still cold...The sliced beef didn't taste authentic. It tasted like the prepackaged ones you get at your local Chinese supermarket Chicken udon- So on the menu this is listed as the "Shanghainese thick noodles" in Chinese but in English it's udon? Very confusing since they are 2 completely different things. Udon is Japanese! Well we decided to take a chance anyway and hoped that we would be served the thick noodles but nope, we got udon. Wasn't impressed by this dish at all and definitely something I could make at home for a fraction of the price I would say that aside from the soup dumplings, which were at most average, the food here was rather disappointing. We ended up paying $13 each after tax and tip and I left still feeling hungry. This place just opened up about 2 weeks ago so I was surprised they didn't have any grand opening promotions/discounts. I found out about this place from my brother in law so we gave it a try. My first impression was positive as it was really bright, clean and the decor was very inviting. I liked how the menus had lots of pictures of the dishes. We ordered the crab soup dumplings which is a must have item. It was absolutely delicious and paired very well with their sweet vinegar. Just as good if not better than Joe Shanghai's but in a much more convenient location in Brooklyn. The pork belly was really tender and flavorful. Perfect to eat with a bowl of white rice. The sweet spare ribs packed a lot of flavor as well. Overall the price was right and the food was great. We'll definitely be coming back here many more times as we saw a couple of dishes other folks ordered that looked really good. UPDATE 2: So good we had to come back for the soup dumplings and try the other items. It definitely did not disappoint at all! Grandma's Pork was braised so perfectly tender and oodles of flavor! The spicy chicken was on point! The right amount of savory, spicy and the perfect amount of crispness. The scallion noodles was another star dish. So simple yet done amazingly! The spare ribs was a bit dry the first time but they redeemed themselves the 2nd time and it was much more juicy this time around. I think their soup dumplings are better than Liu's, with thinner skin. I also recommend their scallion pancake wrapped with beef. Nearby Liu's Shanghai was closed for vacation, which brought my friends and I over here for a taste, and I'm delighted to report a happy thumbs up. We loved everything we ordered: scallion pancakes, pork soup dumplings, crabmeat and pork soup dumplings, scallion noodles, and pan fried pork buns. I would definitely come for their soup dumplings. I preferred their regular pork to the crabmeat and pork mix. There's six to a basket and they're pretty large with generous amounts of soup (yum!) Although I do have to suggest caution with using the tongs to pick up the dumpling, as they're prone to ripping. The scallion noodles are another winner here, albeit a bit oily, but that makes for a great little indulgence once in while. The soup dumplings are really good. I usually order the pork soup dumplings and they've never disappointed. The soup dumplings are always full of soup and the skin is thin. The beef stir fried udon is a hit or miss. Today I ordered it and the noodles were hard and has a funky taste to it. Usually it is soft and tasty. I also think they need to train their workers better. Last week I called at 8pm to order for pickup and the lady on the phone told me they ran out of soup dumplings and that they have never sold beef udon and that it doesn't exist on their menu. Mr. Bun gives an interesting mix of vibes with the way it's decorated and the menu items offered. There are a lot of random decorations in the restaurant that seem out of place, but it's nicely decorated. I think there are better options in the area, but this place is fairly new and worth giving a try. The menu items has a variety of different authentic Chinese options and then they have a lunch special for "take out" Chinese items like sesame chicken. The food was pretty good. I had a bunch of different items, but some ones to note are: Soup dumplings - The soup dumplings are average. The dumplings are very soupy and you can tell by how much they droop when you pick them up. I had at least one break for each order while picking them up. Shredded pork with pickled cabbage stir-fried rice cakes - I wouldn't consider the dish so much stir fried... The dish was just plain rice cakes with pork and the preserved vegetables. The dish didn't have much taste and should have some gravy like most other rice cake dishes. Beef with crispy noodle - This tasted a little bland to me. The beef came shredded instead of slices like other restaurants normally do. It was a pretty good mix of items and it was good, but could've used a little more taste. Scallion noodles - This came as a smaller portion, which makes sense for its $4.75 price. The noodles were simple but tasty. Arriving here on a cold rainy evening felt like reaching the gates of paradise after a long sojourn. First, it had been an intense few days at work, and this was a meal to celebrate the end of a major work event. WHOO! But comparing this place with all other Shanghainese places in Manhattan or Queens, this place is just ok. For example, the scallion pancake is deep fried instead of pan fried. Shanghai Liu has been my go to spot for XLB for years and on this Thursday night, I decided to venture out and try the newer XLB establishment on 86th street. I arrived at 6:45 with my party of 5 on a Thursday. It was nearly empty when we walked in, but people kept rolling in and by 8:00, I can confidently say that this place was actually packed. They had a special going on in that if you spend over $25, you can get a free order of XLB, which was a nice weekday offer. The decorations here, as other helpers have mentioned, is definitely very interesting. The walls are plastered with art from One Piece and anime figurines including, but not limited to, Power rangers, Dragonball and One Piece. The weeaboo in me was dancing Unfortunately, the food here was mediocre, to say the least. The XLB was alright, with a thin skin and juicy pork. My boyfriend really enjoyed the crab XLB, but while it was good, it didn't blow my head out of the way water. Their cucumber salad was refreshing and their minced chicken and corn soup was good, but it just tasted like something I can get from any restaurant. I want to mention that the portions here are SMALL. Definitely smaller than portions at other Chinese restaurants. I also found that the "wok hay" was lacking. Raised by a Chinese father who works at a Chinese restaurant, I have come to appreciate the rich, almost, charred taste that you can only get from the strong stove and heated wok. I did NOT get that flavor from any of the dishes at all and my dad tells me that that happens when the food is not cooked at an appropriate heat. Thus, I felt that the rice cakes were mushy and mediocre. Overall, this place is FINE. Definitely still prefer Shanghai Liu for that homecooked feel. Came in after a workout from planet fitness with my friend and was seated immediately. They handed us two regular menus and a paper menu with a pencil in which I believed we were to write down the amount of whatever dish we chose but we weren't 100% sure since no one explained anything to us. They dropped it off with two waters and that was mainly it. Funny thing was, our pencil had no tip so we had to flag down a waitress to grab a pen. No big deal though. We ordered two orders of pork soup dumplings, a chicken crispy noodle, 2 bowls of hot and sour soup and a scallion pancake. Overall, our food was quite delicious and came out relatively on time. My favorite was the scallion pancakes! However, I am super underwhelmed by the crispy noodle. I had expected the noodles to be thicker (it was thin but it's not a big deal) and the sauce to pair perfectly with the crispiness. However, what we had was a watery mess. Great soup dumplings that are really a hop, skip, and a jump from me! If I really wanted to, I could walk to Mr. Bun, but I don't want to walk after eating maximum capacity of soup dumplings. It was worth paying for the parking. We went on Saturday for an afternoon lunch to try out Mr. Bun. I was instantly in love with the overall vibe as soon as I walked in! The walls are covered with anime and specifically, One Piece, which made everything fun and playful. Families were laughing and chatting, and no one seemed to mind we were white; awesome! A feeling of people just enjoying amazing food filled the air; I wanted some of that. We decided to order the scallion noodle, pork soup dumplings, crab and pork soup dumplings, and an order of beef scallion pancake. Grand total? $25 - for two people! But let's talk about the food! Beef Scallion - this was really delicious and fresh as soon as it came out of the kitchen; let it sit there and you'll be sorry! Great cuts of the beef and the scallions were sliced paper thin; really delicious and a customer favorite! Pork soup dumplings - loaded with soup on the inside and beautiful to look at! Tasty! The skin wasn't too thick and wasn't too thin; pretty balanced. Although these weren't the BEST soup dumplings I've ever had, these are much more convenient to get to when the craving comes around. Crab and pork dumplings - sadly, these really lacked the flavor that the pork ones had, and I'm not entirely sure as to why. These were pretty meh and we only finished them as not to waste food. Scallion noodles - they were really surprisingly different and addicting! The shrimps and the caramelized onions on top were details that were worth noting; I would HIGHLY recommend this and enjoy the chewy noodles. Came here multiple time with my family and have nothing negative to say at all! The service and food is great. We try to order different menu items all the time, but stick with the pork XLB and dung po pork meat. The XLBS have a great skin to them with awesome soup flavor inside. There's 6 XLB in total, so for the 3 of us we tend to get 2 orders since we can't resist! The dung po is certainly another highlight as it is a very juicy, greatly marinated pork shoulder with bok choy. It is so soft that it melts in your mouth when you eat it. I believe we also tried the soy duck - it was ok. The rice cake noodles with the beef are also very tasty and something different when you're tired of eating the typical lo mein or chow fun. Lots of soup, decent portion of meat. It was a medium sized dumpling. Good. - Scallion Pancakes: crispy and not too heavy on the scallions, very enjoyable - Pancake with sliced beef: only good hot, the pancake could've used more sauce and the beef was a tad light but still good - sticky rice shumai: large shumai shaped sticky rice. It's savory and filling, no meat. Just sticky rice, you gotta be a fan. - pan fried veggie and pork dumplings: fried well on the bottom and it was juicy inside. Plain and simple - hits the spot. - pickled cucumbers: served cold, side order. It was very crisp and refreshing. Also a hint of soy and you can taste the pickle-like juice it's marinated in. Excellent. - sauteed broccoli with garlic sauce: Al dente. Perfect. - Edamame, mustard greens, tofu threads, and other green veggies stir fry: only good hot, vegetarian friendly. Simple. Classic Shanghai dish. - General Tso's chicken: don't judge, the kids wanted this. It was decent, spicy but not alarming. Mild flavor. Excellent XLBs that have a perfectly thin skin and ratio of soup to meat. We ordered the crab and the regular pork XLBs and we definitely preferred the pork ones more but the crab was pretty solid as well. We also got the scallion noodles and the hot oil tripe. Loved the noodles which came with a very savory and addictive sauce and some scallion and dried shrimp toppings. I would skip the hot oil tripe, it wasn't dressed with enough hot oil and did not have enough toppings like cilantro and scallions to give it some texture. They put cucumbers at the bottom of the dish and since it's all made ahead of time the dish was all watery from the cucumber. This is one of the best XLBs I have had in Brooklyn and possibly even NY. Everytime I open Wechat, I always see my dad's post about the soup dumplings in his Moments. My parents and brother in Brooklyn frequently eat at Mr. Bun (there was a great BOGO promo when they first opened) and I'm glad I finally got to try it! We went on New Year's Eve at 2pm for a late lunch so there were only a few tables occupied. Food: - Soup dumplings were delicious! The chefs are from Flushing so I'm not surprised ;) The soup was flavorful, pork filling was smooth and well flavored. Dumpling skin was thin and bouncy and didn't break. Not one person broke a soup dumpling! Impressive since we ordered four rounds of six dumplings, hah. - I really enjoyed their egg and shrimp fried rice - good portion too. Best soup dumplings I've had yet in Brooklyn. I've been missing access to good soup dumplings since relocating from the city to the BK. Saw the Yelp reviews for this place, and decided to try it on a whim this past weekend. They did not disappoint! Soup dumplings were comparable to the better joints in Manhattan. The dumpling skin was prepared right - delicate and not overly thick - decent size portions and very flavorful. I also had the Beef pancake and Shrimp stir fried udon noodles. The pancake was probably my least favorite item - it barely had any beef. Noodle dish was good, but coulda used some more noodles in it. Will be back for sure next time I'm craving soup dumplings. We ordered soup dumplings, scallion pancake, garlic roasted shrimp, and another dish I forgot the name of. All the dishes were super delicious. Another shanghainese restaurant in the Bensonhurst area. There's another one nearby on Bath ave but this place is on 86 street. Much more convenient. Ordered the classic shanghainese dishes like soup dumplings, noodles and fried dumplings. They make their food different by adding chicken broth in their soup dumplings. I wouldn't say it's as good as the classic recipe but I was satisfied with my meal. The food here hit the spot and fits the bill for good shanghainese. Would come here again! Cheers read more
