Looked like a nice private optometry, but I took courteous greeting and time efficiency way over for granted. I found them through those on-line deals; good price minus hidden $20 for eye dilation. Acceptable. It's still cheaper than other places I suppose. Entering the office was not accompanied by smiles or greetings, unless you find 'how can I help you' welcoming. Ok ok, warm welcomes aren't mandatory, but sticking to the appointment time is. I got there early, and I'm still waiting during the time my app was supposed to start. The final straw that broke the camel's back: when I asked them how much longer it would be, fifteen minutes into my actual appointment, I am answered with a slight, hesitant giggle, followed by, " oh were a little behind schedule there's still one more person'...AND?....wait time?...'about 40 minutes.. he didn't even tell me that when my app should have started. Had I waited to hear my name I would have sat for another hour. No apology given, but its cool, just glad I don't have to go there again. This is actually a new optometrist that took over the office. This office use to be operated by Dr Joseph Peek. Unfortunately, when I came back, I saw a brand new staff and was informed Dr. Peek passed away. I was really devastated as Dr. Peek was my optometrist for over 7 years and his entire staff knew me. The new doctor and staff that took over is okay. They are extremely professional. BUT, being professional comes with a draw back. They are very strict on a lot of things. Before Dr. Peek's staff would let me bargain my prices and also throw in a bunch of free stuff, free contact lenses (trial pairs), boxes of sample contact solutions, and lens cases, etc. They would also price match contact prices online. With the new team, I felt they we too professional and less Asian style. Can't cut too much corners and bargain with them. I came in for a contact lens and eye glass exam. Good thing I recently got a job that had really good vision insurance. They said my insurance covers the exam. Great! I would just need to pay a $10 co-pay. Not bad I guess. I went through the exam, the new doctor was very helpful and answered all my questions. I felt I wasn't being rushed. However after my exam, they charged me a $40 contact lens fitting fee. I felt kind of ripped off. Dr. Peek never charged me that. I didn't feel like arguing with them as I had already went through the entire exam. So I coughed up the extra $40 on top of my co-pay and subsidized vision insurance. I felt cheated because they never mentioned to me the $40 fitting fee. I would have went to another Asian eye doctor that waived the fee. C'mon! we're in Monterey Park not Beverly Hills! If this happened to my mom she would raise hell on the office. Pricing on contacts. They told me that my insurance would only cover $150 for my yearly contact lenses and that with my lenses, I would need to pay an extra $50 as a year's supply cost $200. I told them I'll let them know and went home to do some research. In the end, I found an online retailer that sold my contacts for $120 for a yearly supply! Wow they were overcharging by $80. I went ahead and placed the order online and the retailer was in my insurance policy so they would just claim it with the insurance. A couple days later, the online retailer called me back and told me that my claim for materials (contacts) has already been taken! WHAT?! I called my insurance and they told me that Monterey Park Optometry filed a claim for it already. OMG! I told them what happened and my insurance had to call Monterey Park optometry to get my claim back. Finally after straightening it out, the online retailer was able to file a claim on my $120 yearly supply and it came to me in the mail in a week. No money out of my pocket! Beware of 2 things with this office. 1. $40 contact lens fee 2. Buy all your contacts online. They are wayyy cheaper! Request a prescription from them after your exam. By law, they have to give you a copy. After years of going to Dr. Peek, I'm going to look else where for affordable optometrist that won't overcharge and cheat me out of my money. read more

In response to the owner's comment .... The office never explained to the patient that once the progressive lenses were processed that they could not be refunded. Had he known that, he would not have went for them and opted for just the single vision lenses. The office kept pushing on selling the most expensive lenses without regard to what was best for the patient. The patient also never received any voicemails or messages and he called the office numerous times to no avail. The reason I had to intervene was because it was my credit card that was used. Every time the patient went into the office to discuss the new lenses they would say nothing about the "credit" and would insist on pushing another product. I don't want a full refund of the glasses, just on the difference of the progressive lenses to the single vision lenses. The patient does not want contacts, or anything else from their offices. He said they tried to fit him for contact lenses but he was not comfortable with them and just wanted the single vision lenses. The office still insisted on selling yet ANOTHER product. All I want is the difference refunded back to my credit card, since I was present and I was NOT explained their policy. I did not sign such a waiver. I love how the office is still INSISTING on us spending more money there and using their "store credit". That alone is bad business practice. Also notice how they have filtered out numerous 1-star reviews. I'm pretty sure mine will get filtered out in due time. Businesses like this will eventually fade out on their own. Terri brings condescending to a new level Not sure what happened here, but they use to be really friendly, most staff still are, but Terri (old white lady) is not friendly at all. We were looking at frames and she was trying super hard to up sell me on everything and didn't listen to what I wanted. I wanted larger frames and she kept pushing these other styles on me. I ended up not getting new frames and using my current one. The worst part was her tone throughout the whole process. It was super condescending- about everything! From my frames to type of lenses. She didn't care about my concerns, her goal was clear: UP SELL me. Also, she told me to not buy the groupon, that the groupon "discount" would end up costing me more! WTF?! Never again. read more

I'd like to think I have some knowledge of the inner workings of how an optometry is run. Being a former employee of this really busy optometry office at the Focus Plaza in San Gabriel, I know about the vision insurance, pretesting, glasses/contact lenses exam etc. I use to work close by and having seen MPO plenty of times, I decided to stop by, make an appointment and go from there. I arrived for my Wednesday appointment, signed in, given the paperwork to fill out and from there, didn't have to wait too long to start my pretest. The pretest was done by lovely staff named Hsiao. She was knowledgeable and didn't have a problem working the pretest machines. After, she led me into Dr. Lam's exam room. Honestly, I have met quite a few optometrists in my lifetime and some have even become my friends and Dr. Lam is just as pleasant my friends. He took his time examining me, answered my questions and let me try more than one contact lenses brand. I'm still currently trying some of the contacts lenses brands and even when I had an issue with one of them, I walked in and Kimberly (such a sweet staff member) was able to either order a different one and/or give me something else to try! Overall, highly recommended optometry office. If you can, I'd say go on the weekday, almost a no wait time for me. They accept most major insurances! Note-they accept most major credit cards but with Amex you'll need to spend a certain amount. Something to do on Amex end. read more

I got their Groupon for me and my wife and we went there today for the eye check. Dr. Lam was good enough in explaining the things. But looks like they are highly interested in making money. When I asked them that i do not want glasses and do not want to buy anything, they insisted me for buying one pair and not to waste $125 that i got on groupon. However I told them that i do not want to buy anything. I just want my prescription and they gave me prescription without PD (pupillary distance) which is required to get glasses from other stores. They denied to give PD values.. Please do not go there and do not purchase their groupon. The frames are extremely expensive. Starting from $150+++ and above that lenses start from $96++ (Basic ones) I get lenses and frames from other stores at much cheaper price.almost 70% less... And even if you do not buy anything from there, they will not give you the prescription that is required to get your glasses from somewhere else. Looks like their business is only on Groupon and they just want to make money from selling glasses.. They are not interested in maintaining customer relations.. I will never ever go there. and also i will not recommend to any of my friends and relative. I will share this in my office today and ask everyone not to buy their Groupon. read more

First, I know many Yelpers probably wont be using Yelp to find healthcare practioners, obviously this isn't the best place to find recommendations for providers of health, compared to say a coffee-shop or restaurant, but I'm going to continue with my review anyway! Dr. Lam is hands down one of the best optometrist I've ever had and I've been blessed with poor vision the last 15+ years. He is the only optometrist who took the time, care and patience to find me a pair of contact lenses that fit me perfectly. He gave me many different pairs to try, and would have me come back after wearing them for a few days for follow-up. Then he would examine the lens and how it fit in my eye and kept making adjustments until he was able to find me the perfect pair. No other doctor has ever done that for me. They usually give you a pair or two and if they don't work out, they just give up, but not Dr. Lam, he knew he could fit me properly and that it would just take a little longer. Well done sir!. I've been going to Dr. Joseph Peek my whole life. When I went to the office for my yearly check up, I was saddened when I learned that he passed away. I decided to get a check up with Dr. Lam since I was already there. My insurance allows me to have a regular eye exam plus $120 for contact lens. After my exam with Dr. Lam, I found out that they charged me extra for a contact lens exam. I have been wearing contacts for 15 years and I have never been charged extra for a contact lens exam. They took the money out of the $120 from my insurance I was left only with enough money to buy 1 box of contacts. I ended up paying out of pocket and bought the rest of my contacts online (which was way cheaper). I also felt like the optometrist kept trying to upsell extra services. He wanted me to get these plugs to put in my tear duct so my eyes wouldn't get dry. He also tried to convince me to lasik. Even after my visit, the office called me multiple times to try to get me to order contacts. They even called me to try to get my boyfriend to order glasses from them. I felt like they were solicitors and I wanted to unsubscribe. Before I would have never believed that an optometry could get one star, but they did it! I am never coming back here again. read more

finally decided to get my eyes checked after a year of blaming my supposedly dirty windshield in my car for not being able to read the signs on the freeway or on the street when driving. haven't had my eyes professionally checked in almost 10 years, so I knew it was time when i was stopped at the intersection and the gigantic word on the building across the street was blurry. went on yelp and tried other places but their open hours didn't fit my work schedule. and decided to try this place since it was less than a 5 minute drive from my home. the office is mega clean and Dr. Lam explained everything clearly and in the end I joined the "four eyes" club hahaha! probably gave the guy Robert? (i think that was his name) a hard time cause it took me forever to choose what frame I wanted but in the end was satisfied with the help I got :) Will be coming back to pick up my new glasses once they tell me it's ready! :D read more

My mother's vision has been changing significantly over the last few years and its been extremely difficult for her to understand what the prognosis is. Dr. Lam was so overwhelmingly patient in describing to her how her vision is changing, and provided her not only with insight into why but also with real practical advise for how to adjust to her new condition. She also mentioned that everyone in the office was very kind. In reading other reviews I noticed someone wrote something discriminatory and negative about them being religious. I think that's actually extremely positive. When someone is religious, at least you know they have a moral compass they hold themselves to. That makes me feel much more comfortable knowing that they hold themselves accountable to a higher purpose. I'm super grateful to the Dr. and everyone in the office for helping my mother. read more

After writing the first review, I was contacted by Cassie (sp?), Dr. Lam's wife and co-owner of MPO Eyecare. After speaking with her staff, she called to clarify what had happened from my end. She apologized for her husband not being at the first follow-up appointment. She stated that he works 6 days a week and it was really unfortunate that this happened because he never leaves the office so that was his only time. I, too, only have 1 day off from school and work so I understand the time is precious thing. The Saturday she contacted me following my review I had been working for 16 hours so I understand. However, in general terms, it is unacceptable to miss an appointment due to unforeseen traffic circumstances or because time wasn't managed properly. It is the responsibility of the doctor or anyone running a business to manage time efficiently and it should not affect the client. She also apologized for the communication errors that were made overall. Apparently they have only been in that location for 2 years and a lot of the staff are new. They are still working on training everyone to communicate effectively. I, too, work for a very small brand new business and understand it does take time to get to a good comfort level. Teri called me as well, letting me know they found my glasses and put a rush order on them. They were done very fast, but because of my schedule, wasn't available to pick them up on the day they were ready. She even offered to meet with me on Sunday, a day they aren't even open. When I picked up my glasses, Cassie had left a compensation check for me at the office as an apology for all my frustration and lost time. Teri also sat there patiently while I checked my new prescription. The lenses were a lot better and it is a relief to finally have my glasses. I appreciate that both Cassie and Teri took initiative to solve my issues to best of their abilities. I'm sad that it had to come to resolving the issue via Yelp, so my suggestion to this business it to be absolutely transparent when it comes to customer service. I would not have gone through the trouble of writing a Yelp review if there were direct emails to either Teri or Cassie on their website. Perhaps having separate staff emails would be helpful? I suppose I could have asked for either ones' email, but since my situation had gotten to the point where no one was paying attention to what was going on, I felt it necessary to make it public. I can tell from their willingness to cooperate and their fast move to resolve my issues, they really do care about the customer. If any future customer is reading this, please know that if there is an issue with anything from this business, they will do their best to help get things right. read more

Work switched up my insurance so I had to find a new provider. which lead me to MPO. I called not knowing a thing, literally nothing. Kimberly was the one who helped me over the phone. SUPER friendly and helpful. she literally told me everything I needed to know and what to expect for my appointment. I'm literally so excited to finally get some contacts after so long of being afraid to find a new provider. (use to have kaiser, super simple). My appointment is this weekend. Monterey Park optometry is the best one-stop shop for its variety of glasses and contacts with reasonable pricing and other optometry services. Dr. Lam is very professional and informative, he patiently answer all of my questions. All of the staff members are extremely friendly and helpful. The person that help me with my glasses is very nice, helpful and patient. I took my time trying on countless number of glasses and never once did she make me feel like I am taking too long. I can't believe it took me this long to find this place! I'm so bummed that I missed out on the $35 glasses exam and paid $55 elsewhere :( I came in here to look for some affordable non brand glasses to purchase with my prescription from another optometry and was greeted by a super friendly associate by the name of Kristina. She helped me literally try on about 15 different glasses before deciding on the perfect pair! She explained throughly different options as well as offered me a Pasadena City College discount with proof of my school ID (they have a partnership with surrounding schools) Anyway, when I returned to pick up my glasses from an also friendly associate by the name of Alex, the process went fast, easy, and smooth!! I will definitely come back next year to get a glasses exam + contacts exam because of their affordable price!!! I'm seriously bummed that I missed out on their great price on an exam before, but now that I know I'll be back! They also accept my insurance as well as a few others. The store itself is small, but very clean and has a great color scheme. All of them wear different shades of turquoise/aqua blue which is so cute. No review yet on the doctor itself- since I have yet to meet him, but I'm sure he's just as nice as the rest of his staff! 5 Stars for Dr. Lam. Informative. Friendly. Professional. I felt really comfortable during my exam. 5 Stars for the facility. Clean and Modern 3 Stars for the selection - Not much to choose from. 2 Stars for price - The frames were pricey even with my groupon deal. I bought the deal with $300 off for 2 pairs of glasses but ended up buying just a pair with $125 off. I spent $69 on groupon and today's visit costed $430. To sum it up I spent $499.00 of which $90 went to procedures (photos of my eyes and contact fitting) and $340 for my glasses (ray ban frames, hi index lenses with 1 year warranty, and anti glare). That was my bad. I fogot to say no to the warranty. I hate warranties! I've never had to use one. Ugh. So lets average out my stars... 5+5+3+2 = 15 / 4 = 3.75. I'll round up :) I'll be back for future eyes exams because Dr. Lam is honest and trustworthy. But my frugal self will be purchasing my glasses and contacts somewhere else. read more

She promised to address these issues and told me I could personally contact her if any other issues should arise (shes on sick leave). Honestly I never had issues with anyone other than what I hear about one particular staff, but the attention and care that Cassie has shown makes up a lot for what the below review has described. I will update again if anything has changed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You know I really liked my experience here with the old staff and I've never had a bad appointment. Dr. Lam is a great optometrist and very personable and his wife Cassie is very nice and friendly. However, the reason why I am updating my review is that I have recommended 4 coworkers to MPO and all have gone and become patients....with horrible results. We all work and live in Santa Monica and Long Beach so making the trip out to Alhambra is time consuming. They did it because of my rave reviews. What they were treated to was less than stellar customer service. Today was the last straw, the new office worker Teri, overcharged my coworker for services that were not rendered and for which had been expressly stated that they did not want (Teri had been pushing a sale). We did not find out until after getting back to the office and having to contact them to fax over the papers as they had not included it with her receipt as originally promised. Not only was that one coworker charged inappropriately, but my other coworker was told that it was her fault that she did not constantly remind Teri to help her (since Teri was busy with other customers and did not have time to remember to service waiting patients). WTF is that? Third coworker had the wrong contacts and price charged for her contacts and had to spend several days on the phone trying to fix it with the office (she eventually did, but she is unlikely to ever return). Now my fourth coworker...just canceled after all the negative experiences from everyone else. I've lost all credibility with anyone in office now. Seriously fix your staff Dr. Lam! read more

This is quite unfortunate. I've been here last year at their old location and their service was not bad. There was friendly staff and Dr. Lam was helpful and was able to answer most of my questions. The staff were even willing to wait for me while I was rushing in after work. But... This year I found out they moved to Alhambra, last November I tried to use their online system to make an appointment, I got no response whatsoever. Then I tried to call in multiple times to try to make an appointment, nobody picked up, I left messages and I still got no response. Okay, so I try to go online again to make an appointment and I read the fine print saying online requests need to be made at least 14 days in advance. Long story short I gave up and went to another doctor. Sorry, I don't think I'll be coming back. read more

Be warned. The staff here will never give a straight answer on price or service. I saw their ad on groupon and called to verify. I asked what is included and I got the same answer as stated on paper. I told them I am an existing customer and needed a prescription for glasses and contacts and new lens with my old frame. They wouldn't tell me how much it would cost. When I asked again, they told me the cost for an eye exam and the cost for the lens. When I added it up and asked if that would be the total, then I was told that contact exam would be extra. When I then added up the total and asked again, then I was told there would be an extra fitting fee. I have been wearing glasses and contact for 40+ years and have done this enough times to know what is involved. I don't think the burden of price checking should be on the customer. Let me assure you that every answer they gave was accurate but your question would never be answered. All I wanted was how much it would cost to get a new prescription for contacts and to replace my lens; I am not running a financial audit. I would like a straight answer on how much it would cost me. After talking to them, I didn't have confidence on I would pay what I expected and walked out with what I ordered. Just to be fair, the doctor is a very good, caring and detail doctor. Just like so many other medical practices, the doctors are usually very good at being a doctor but the office is run by the worst government workers you have ever ran into. read more

He says the Yelp deal would be more since I'd get charged $210 for the exam, then get $95 credit for the Yelp deal I would pay $49 for, then pay an additional $109? I was referred to this place from a friend and so glad I came! The staff was not only super nice, but extremely helpful. I had a slight stigmatism which the previous optometrist just told me I had it without really explaining the details. I explained that the glasses I purchased from the previous optometrist made me feel like I was looking through a fish bowl and after looking at the glasses, they found that the line of sight was way off hence the "fish bowl" affect. I never knew and if it weren't for them, my eyes would probably be much worse than they are now. They took a good amount of their time to help explain both my fiance and my conditions and really gave me a peace of mind of how my eyes work and what to do to take better care of them. Most people wouldn't even give me half that time. They'd just say "which one is better, 3 or 4" and then prescribe me new specs. The place was sparkling clean for those OCD people out there. Every equipment they used, they would wipe it down thoroughly before I placed my head, forehead, chin, etc on it. Plus, their equipment was very up to date with some cool things I haven't seen before. I now have a better prescription for my little eyes and looking forward to my cool shades. Their selection of frames are great and they explained that if I wanted to check out other options, I could tell them the name/SKU and they could work something out. That's so cool, I never had that option before. As I read several other Yelpers reviews, I'm not sure why they would complain about a deal they already got and want more for less. The ignorance most people who buy these deals (i.e. Groupon/Living Social) don't know how financially straining it is to do a promotion. Granted the location is hard to find, but that's why they probably needed to do a promotion so they can get on the map. I don't mind paying a little more if I know I'm being taken care of, and that's how I feel about MPO. And trust me, I've paid more for half the service. I honestly would recommend this place to my anyone in need of a check up or new glasses/contacts because I know that if they are as attentive to us, I'm sure they'll do the same for everyone. read more

I've been wearing glasses for as long as I can remember and every year I would have a hard time picking out new glasses. There are a nice variety of frames in which I get to choose from. When I asked for contacts Dr. Lam gave me some trial contact lenses to take home to see what fits me best. Since I have a high prescription, he took the time to address my concerns regarding my floaters. The front office staff was friendly and listened to what I was looking for, and my glasses turned out AMAZING!! As for the office itself, it's incredibly modern and clean. read more

I can't remember the last time I had my eyes checked prior to coming to MPO. So naturally, I was pretty terrified to hear what the doctor might have to say about my vision. The office is very clean. The staff is friendly and the doctor is very knowledgeable. The exam was quick for both me and my husband, and we were happy to find that our vision is still in almost perfect condition. With that said, they asked us to come back, not next year, but in three years - even though we have vision insurance, which they could claim against. Since we didn't have to go back for another three years, I cancelled our vision insurance during open enrollment to save some money. I've been coming to MPO since 2009 when they opened in Monterey Park. I believe my family found them through Groupon then but we've been coming back once a year since then. Scott (Dr. Lam), Cassie, and the rest of the reception staff have been great. They do a great job working with our insurance and provide great services. Everyone here treats me and my family like awesome. Dr. Lam in particular takes great care with every exam and explains everything in great detail. Before coming to MPO I didn't have a clear understanding of anything that went on in the exam, but Dr. Lam makes sure I come out of every appointment knowing exactly how my eyes are doing. The selection of eyewear is great as well. I normally bring in my own frames, but they don't hesitate to work with those either and they do a great job putting in the lenses. I've brought frames to other places that snapped within a few months but I was able to use one pair for 3 years with MPO switching out the lenses once a year. They even did a great job with my sunglasses. I don't know much about contacts since I only wear glasses but my sister has had no problems with her contacts from here. Overall, if you want fantastic service, glasses and contacts that look good and last, and to be treated like family, MPO is the place to be. read more

I bought a groupon for $29 and I get $200 towards my glasses purchase. I made an appointment and went last Friday, the employees there were all very friendly and welcoming. They answered all my questions and I didn't have to wait very long to see Dr. Lam. Dr. Lam was very informative, he explained the inner workings of the eye to me, especially since I had lasik performed 7 years ago, he went into depth about what they did to correct vision and why some people remiss. They fit my contacts for me for $55 (discounted price for same day fitting offered to patients with no vision insurance). Which isnt bad considering my previous optometrist was trying to charge me more. He fit my contacts and gave me a pair to try on, it wasn't sitting correctly so he asked me to throw those out and gave me another pair. The second pair fit like a charm. I then went out and tried on a few frames, the associate that helped me with my frame consult was very helpful, and i decided on a pair that cost about $229. Because my previous lenses had no protective coating, i decided to get it this time. My old pair always glared and was scratched beyond belief... so I didnt want them to be like that anymore. I received the glasses and contacts today so its been exactly one week. They also helped me pop my original lenses into my sunglasses because they had my old prescription before. This place can be a little pricey but the groupon helped. And anyways what do you expect? You get what you pay for... I paid a little extra and had a very good experience here. read more
