Another visit to MP Taverna on a Friday night. This time for a birthday celebration with my Daughters boyfriend AJ. I always go with the usual when there- trio of dips and the seafood orzo. Both items are still standouts. I still think it may be the best entree in Westchester. Even on a night when there are slip-ups.... In this case: * 15-20 minutes to be seated. * A vastly undercooked salmon. It was ordered well done and was served sushi style salmon. * A very weak cocktail. The positives still out-weigh the negatives here- by a wide margin. Kudos to Dan the server. He is friendly, smooth, and unflappable. He comes in from Scranton each weekend to work at MP? Who knew? GO GO GO HERE! We are visiting for a few days and this was mins from our hotel and good reviews! Soooo glad we selected this place. It's upscale and casual at the same time - some were dressed to the nines others in jeans n a sweater- either works! We made reservations to be safe but because we were slightly ahead of the dinner hour there were several tables! The owner/chef - Food Network Star - Michael Psilakis visits EVERY table to make you feel valued! Now about the food - the Octopus Salad was spectacular! The yogurt sauce the perfectly grilled octopus sat on was velvety tangy and mild all in one it is accompanied with diced vegetables onion and some kind of mild pepper I could not place and chickpeas- I've had my fair share of Great octopus salad but this tops the list. Next get the Braised Lamb Shank with a luscious tomato sauce spinach and orzo and thinly sliced garlic - DEVINE! In a word! Finally the Lemon Chicken - Best I've ever had and again I try this at nearly every restaurant- the skin can be requested extra seared for extra crispy texture - they must brine it because the subtle flavor permeates each morsel. The lemon sauce was subdued but ohhhh so perfect with more thinly sliced garlic (I love love garlic) and fingerling potatoes were buttery and delicately cooked to still have firmness/shape but tender as well! First time here. The place I a lot bigger than it appears from outside. The atmosphere was casual. There was a buzz of conversation going on at all the tables. It is a combo Greek/Italian menu and I was torn between the Greek and several pasta dishes. What finally won me over was the cavatelli in a short rib bolognese / caccio e Pepe sauce. I was warned that it was very black pepper forward/ it is! Perfect. The chef, who would come into the dining room and walk the floor asking how everyone was doing. I complimented him on not being afraid to bring in the black pepper. The food was great, including the complimentary pita bread which I need to scarf up all the sauce. This is luckily, not close to where I live or I'd be here quite often. Prices were on the high end of moderate but definitely worth it! Give it a try. read more

MP Taverna is celebrity Chef Michael Psilakis' baby. We used to enjoy going to his restaurant in Astoria, but that closed a few years ago and I've been wanting to go to the Irvington one for a long time. Finally getting a chance, I invited our cousins to meet there for an early dinner. It is located by the Hudson River and conveniently next to the Irvington Metro-North station with a large parking lot shared by the other neighboring restaurants. Get the Grilled Octopus! While it is pricey at $30 for an appetizer, you get a lot of tasty tentacles on a bed of Greek yogurt. The smoky charred pieces are tender and flavorful. We also had the Roasted Organic Beet Salad and the sweetness went well with the octopus. At MP Taverna Astoria, the best dish there was the roast chicken and the Irvington Roasted Lemon Amish version is just as good. The Mixed Grill is a BIG portion with a grilled chicken breast, 2 each pork tenderloin and Cypriot & Greek sausage. Add to that, some smashed fries and grilled onions & zucchini and I had to take half of it home. The wives both got seared sea scallops with lemon potatoes & sautéed spinach as sides. The meal was finished off with a plate of mini cannoli on the house and some strong coffee. Came randomly on a Sunday for late lunch. The restaurant is located in a large area by the Hudson with a huge parking lot. Not river view though. It was fairly empty when we went in so did not need a reservation. Our waiter was nice and the ambiance was nice. Apparently most of the main dining tables were reserved so we sat in the section for non-reversations, which was fine. The food was pretty good. We got octopus, gyro, full branzino, and tomato yogurt dip. Everything tasted healthy and delicious, just as you would expect from Greek/Mediterranean place. Overall we were pretty satisfied. Went to lunch here for a birthday celebration based on hearing such good things about the food. While it was quiet for a Saturday afternoon, we enjoyed ourselves. The bar and dining rooms are attractive and comfortable. The staff is friendly and helpful but our server tended to disappear for long periods of time and we had to ask the hostess for our check. No big deal but worth noting. The ribs were amazing. Crispy yet fall off the bone succulent. The scallops were also rich and luscious. They brought a cute plate of cannolis with a candle which was appreciated. I would recommend this place but for dinner as lunch seemed too quiet and a bit off service wise. read more

Freaking love this place!! We've now been 3-4 times and have had a fantastic experience each time. On our first visit, it was warm, so we sat outside. But the other times we have sat at the bar, which we prefer. The bar staff are super fun, and they really add spirit to the experience! As for food, I recommend the following: APPS - Ribs (omg) - Calamari - Meatballs - Any of their meze dips MAINS - Bronzino (wow) - Ricotta Cavatelli - Lamb Burger Honestly, I could go on and on. I can't believe I've lived so close to MP Taverna for 3 years and haven't tried it until now .... The food is sooooo good! I highly recommend going with a group and splitting everything so you can try as much as possible. And you'll probably (almost definitely) need a rez. Came here for a small birthday lunch. Service was superb with great recommendations. Interior is friendly and welcoming - loved the high ceilings. And of course the food -food was excellent. Foie Gras was creamy and generous. Octopus dish was phenomenal - very refreshing with a nice bed of tzatziki and chickpeas and generous serving of octopus. Scallops were outstanding - generous portion of soft slightly seared scallops on fresh spinach puree. I had sardines dish - which I enjoyed but is not for everyone due to explosion of favor (think olives, feta, capers, garlic) And we also got lobster risotto which was good and could have fed 3 people easily. Drinks were quite enjoyable as well. Price on a high-end side, but we did order some of the most expensive dishes on the menu. I never would have imagined going to a Greek Restaurant and getting the best pasta around! MP Taverna truly blew me away from start to finish. Our waiter Nick went above and beyond to ensure my girlfriend and I had the best experience possible. He recommended our meals personally and did not disappoint. We started with calamari which came with a tzatziki sauce along with a red sauce that was delicious. For our main course we both had pasta in a vodka sauce with shrimp and pork belly. Truly one of the best pasta dishes I've ever had and the portions were huge! What I loved also about MP taverna is it is right on the Hudson River and has a breathtaking view of the bridge at night when you exit the restaurant. Lighting was excellent and seats well cushioned and comfortable. The food was meh. The hanger steak was stringy and rubbery and devoid of flavor but was served warm and with an awesome side of smashed fries. The portion was ok. The salad was good, very good, albeit not take your breathe away great. The mixed grill should have been dubbed missed grill. The various sausages were less bold in flavor than I was hoping for and somewhat disintegrated upon cutting. All meals were served on a grill plate. A nice touch. Dinner here with 2 friends on a Friday evening. Our waitperson was immediately available and was informed and funny, explaining the food carefully. Good Sauvignon blanc and we had the combo dips and shrimp appies. All great and good portions including bringing additional pita. We had the grilled branzino, baby lampchops, and lamb shank. All were great, sizable portions and very tasty. The restaurant became quite lively, but they really kept the food and drinks coming. The chef/owner came by to ask how we were doing, a nice touch. The best meal with the most amazing server, Ty. My husband is a total foodie and he has wanted to come to Michael's restaurant for two years. We were finally able to plan a trip and we saved the best for last. Nothing we ordered was a disappointment. Joe had the Greek wedge and the Beet salad. For dinner, he ordered Lamb chops with lemon fingerling potatoes. I ordered the spicy Hummus and tzatziki dip and side of cucumbers. The salads were big and I was able to share those with him. Ty was so friendly and she took time with us even though she was busy. This is not your run of the mill dining establishment. Went with local friends for a late lunch today. Wonderful weather so sat under the tent outside. Service was attentive and very professional. Pasta, salads and burgers were large portions and excellent taste. However the french fries were the surprise-the BEST FRENCH FRIES in the United States!!! Sliced vertical, thick and double fried. The food was great. Party of two shared the mussels appetizer. Fantastic! (Pita bread was brought out as an after-thought). Iberico pork chop for me - none better. Lemon chicken for my wife - great. Shared a side of spinach. The service was attentive but the meal was rushed. No sooner were the remains of the mussels removed from table, the entree's were placed in from of us. It just taste sooooo amazing. We had calamari and also the artichoke with fries app. All 5/5. All the time. We also had the lamb chops with fries. So tender and juicy. Solid spot for dinner. Good selection of medeterranean dishes. Our group started with some octopus, the tzatziki dips, beet salad and meatballs. I would skip the meatballs. For main dishes it was a bit of everything. Som people ordered the lamb burger, greek paella, falafel souvlaki and fish (think it was branzino). The portions for the mains are large, so that won't disappoint. Prices are a bit high because this is a more upscale place. We liked the outdoor area for space, but keep in mind you're basically adjacent to the parking lot and right by train tracks - so dont expect a really private quiet area. Indoor looks really nice too, might try that next time. Overall the food was solid and service was friendly. I'm not a big fan of the outdoor setup so we'll see how the experience goes next time we go indoors. read more

The lambshank was tasty, but with the sides, it was plated very messy. The petite filet was plenty and cooked as ordered. Tender, but very over salted. The salad on the same plate was huge and had nice ingredients, including peppers, onions, tomatoes, romaine, and some other things. The problem was f salad was way over dressed. The dressing was good, but too heavy. The smashed fried potatoes came cold, and by the time the new portion arrived, the filet was almost done. The chef and owner, Michael Pslakis made a tun around a busy dining room. The crowd was very nice and the server was efficient and polite.
