I have been waiting to find the time to write this review given how great this restaurant is. Mozzarella is a small gem located on Vally St. in South Orange, NJ. I was able to sample four dishes and was wowed by the food. I started with a crab cake starter. The cakes were excellent with the correct balance of crab and filler. Plenty of deliciously fresh crab made for an authentic taste of this classic dish. It was placed over a bed of sauteed spinach which was nicely done in garlic and shallots. I sampled the mozzarella sticks which were lightly fried and thick by comparison with most restaurants, which resulted in a clearly superior taste. My wife ordered the chicken noodle soup, whose bones were slow-cooked to add a delicious flavor to the soup. She continued with the Fettuccine Alla Funghi with Roasted wild mushrooms, rosemary, roasted garlic, and a touch of cream and truffle oil. It was absolutely spot on! My brother-in-law enjoyed a Green Apple Salad with Baby greens, dried cranberry, goat cheese, crispy almond, and cranberry vinaigrette. Delicious! I will start by commending the decor and the pizza. Decor is really nice and the pizza was supposedly good (I didn't try it). Our waiter just didn't seem to be trained... ordered a soda, never received said soda, was super inattentive, and when I asked for the bill (twice)... he asked if we wanted the check many moments after I asked? Food was mediocre. Cannoli was stale. Penne alla vodka was undercooked? I feel lucky knowing I don't live in South Orange so I don't have to pass by this awful place again. read more

Fantastic newcomer shows local ho hum pizza joints in SOMA how it's done: fresh quality cheese, delicious sauce, crisp well formed crust, top shelf locally sourced meats. We had one plain cheese and a pepperoni pie we picked up and the slices were delicious from tip to crust. Looking forward to trying more of the fare here; quality food and interior space are really a surprise at this price point, from all the buzz around this new spot had me expecting NYC priced pies, but these guys deliver (and they actually do!) I reviewed Mozzarella a few years ago, full disclosure I have known the owner for, let's just say a long time. My wife and I wanted to celebrate the anniversary of our first date. Sometime last century. We both thought Mozzarella. The place is hopping, be sure to make a reservation. We started with a fresh roasted beet rissoto with goat cheese. So good creamy and bright. The chunks of beet were sweet and a little crunchy. We paired it with the crispy califlower worked great together. Now on to the main event a rich fisherman's stew of shrimp, fish, mussels, clams and calamari. The broth was perfect a hint of wine and herb for me the star was the grilled calamari so tender. We had the crispy gnocchi in a spicy puttanesca sauce, it had a delicious bite and came with grilled ciabbata bread. All so good. We ended with a very light and sweet creme brulee and a tiramisu. My wife and I tend to order food that we will share so it is important that we choose dishes that work well together and enhance each other. This is a perfect description of Mozzarella everything works well together. The decor, the menue and the staff. No one goes out to eat because they like the waitstaff. But, when you are treated with respect and kindness it makes it all so much better. Please trust my recommendation. Go, eat, enjoy. read more

My biggest pet peeve in dining out is watching my dinner companion receive & eat nearly 3/4 of their meal before I even receive mine! That is exactly what happened last night. Whether it was the lack of training on the servers part or the kitchen not being able to finish orders per table at the same time is unclear. Absolutely phenomenal location to host a party. I planned a surprise birthday party for my wife at their outdoor lounge and it worked out great. 16 adults, 7 kids and a dog. Easily accommodated all of us in an open air location that still had enough cover in case of rain. Our waitress Allie was lights out amazing, taking the time to make sure everyone was having a good time. I'm really shocked at how good this place is. They started by recommending their mozzarella sticks and a place called mozzarella, well you have to try it. That Mozz was probably the best over ever had and the dipping sauce with it, made it amazing. Trevor, our waiter had recommended the black mussels, which my wife had. The sauce and the bread to dip it with were once again, great. I went with the fettuccine alla funghi. While I enjoyed it, I believe my wife enjoyed it more. I felt it could have used a very small amount of salt. That is to say I believe it was almost perfect but next time I will go with Trevor's other recommendation of the penne a la vodka. After seeing a TikTok rave review of this place, I was dying to try it! My friend and I went last night and it was an awful experience. The only reason I'm giving them two stars is because the staff was friendly. The food however was very underwhelming. We ordered the Caesar salad which was fine but nothing special. The crostini wasn't good at all. The bread was too crunchy and tasted like pure olive oil. The fettuccine fungi was bland as well. There was very little flavor and just an overall weird texture to it. The only thing decent was the mozzarella sticks but they also weren't anything special. I was also unimpressed with the cheap paper plates and plastic utensils that we were given. The food was incredibly overpriced for what it was. Over $20 a plate for pasta that tastes like Lean Cuisine?? I would not recommend Mozzerella at all. If you're looking for good pasta, salad, and crostini, go to Arturo's in Maplewood! Their Grandma Square Pizza and mozzarella sticks are amazing! Hence the name, they know how to do dishes with mozzarella. Most restaurants have ok or subpar mozzarella sticks, but their mozzarella sticks are like none I've ever had. Definitely get Grandma pizza and mozzarella sticks your first time there. read more

Our first time visiting and it will certainly not be our last. The staff is pleasant and attentive. We did not realize it was BYOB but will certainly bring my favorite wine next time. This place is so good. The mozzarella sticks were perfectly stringy and had a thick breading on them. I also got the short rib mushroom pappadelle which I personally didn't like because it had truffle oil and truffle mushrooms in it, but I have the taste palette of a 4 year old so they were gracious enough to take it off the bill. My fiancé got chicken Florentine which I shared and it was amazing. The chicken was super tender and moist and the sauce was really garlicky and delicious. The food and service top notch - we split the pepperoni pizza and cheesesteak sandwich. Both entrees came out quickly (within 5 min) and were tasty. The cheesesteak could've used more salt and I prefer my steaks medium rare, but I appreciated the soft roll and delicious carmelized onions. Waiter was great!! Super kind. We ordered the shrimp bruschetta to start and it was delicious. I ordered the linguini with white clam sauce. The second that dish came out of the kitchen I could smell it. I took one bite and it tasted like the clams were bought 6 months ago. I explained this to the waiter. And was visibly sick. I asked for a different dish, because this was making me sick and he was happy to bring me one. We were still charged for the dish that made me sick. My boyfriend and I watched the waiter talk to the manager, pleading to take it off the bill, but she refused. Don't go here. The management does not care about your health. read more
