Matt and all the trainers here are amazing!! I used to stick religiously to Barry's/Bodyrok, but after years still wasn't seeing the results I wanted. I also always felt exhausted, and started to dread working out. After discovering MoveSF, I'm EXCITED to come to class now because it's different every time, I feel STRONGER, and the workout intensity is JUST enough where I have energy for more! I also think all the trainers are incredibly friendly and personable. I cannot recommend MoveSF more I've basically swapped out all other classes for this! read more

Always get a great workout at Move-SF... good cardio and strength classes... easy to book online... classes available 7 days a week morning to most evenings...the trainers Matt and Nina are perfectionists... I really appreciate them coming over and correcting my form... the studio is always spotless and clean... A great gym! read more

I travel for work and had the pleasure of spending my 3 months in SF working out at this gym. Out of all the workout classes/studios and gyms I've been to, this one is by far my most favorite. Matt is so great at making everyone of any fitness level feel welcome. The people in the classes are also so supportive of everyone else in the class, whether you're a regular or not! The classes are always different and entertaining, and for sure will leave you breathless. The instructors are great about giving individualized corrections on form. 1000% guaranteed you will notice the results from going consistently. I miss this place already. If you're in SF permanently, or temporarily, this is the gym to go to for results. read more

Matt is so great! He made me feel welcome and helped me with my form. The class was small and it was a great workout

Have emailed move-sf on 3 different occasions and NO response from them. I do not understand why they have a 'Contact' tab, and then do not follow thru? I will take my business elsewhere. read more

I've been taking Tuesday night movement mashup classes here, and I'm definitely a fan. If you like strength training, Tabata, HIIT, or crossfit-lite....you'll like this class. The instructor is really great and I like that you can mostly move at your own pace (except for the Tabata section). Outside of the Tabata potion of the class, there are sufficient breaks, but you definitely feel like you're working hard. I think the owner is nice, and while other people have mentioned that he does offer advice and corrections to classes he's not teaching....I didn't find it to be a problem. I'm actually pretty sensitive to being called out in classes for doing moves incorrectly, but the fact that we're all sort of doing our own thing (i.e. going through the various reps at our own pace) coupled with his pleasant and non-confrontational attitude made it OK for me. He also has a super cool dog who hangs out in the studio that I just love. I actually think everyone here is nice. It feels relaxed and welcoming, especially in comparison to some of the workout spots nearby that cater to the barre, yoga, and pilates crowds (I go to those, often, so I feel like I can compare). I'm giving this 4 rather than 5 stars mostly because I think the facility could be a little better. It definitely has what I need to get in and get a good workout, but sometimes I want a little more. I think maybe some additional weights in the pit would be nice and perhaps equip at least one of the two bathrooms to feel more like an actual changing room. Oh, and maybe some kind of purified water machine with colder water? Long story short, if you are into classes that are more strength oriented and you're in this neighborhood, I would definitely recommend coming here. read more

So much fun packed in such a small building! In what appears to be the confines of a two story house, Move-SF was founded almost exactly two years ago as a modern alternative to the big box Globo Gyms and that much maligned fitness craze spreading like a plague (to remain nameless, but rhymes with "Boss Hit"). To be clear, I have not actually taken any of the in-house classes offered by Move-SF, but rather have attended a handbalancing workshop thrown by local favorite, Coach Daniel Spencer. This is one of many seminars regularly hosted here featuring legendary instructors from around the world, many of whom are the formative experts in their respective disciplines. The gym itself makes optimal use of the limited space. On the bottom is the monkey bar apparatus that is just the ticket for would-be Barstarzz who train mostly with bodyweight, and not metallic weights. Me being a calisthenics/parkour practitioner and instructor myself (check my videos at youtube.com/freeterstar), this section is a wet dream, as in addition to the bars, there are gymnastics rings and TRX suspension trainers to go to town on. Upstairs, there is the padded "dojo" area, reminiscent of a HS wrestling room or martial arts studio. This is where the handbalancing course is held. The rest of the second floor is the weight room, but instead of having the same old equipment you'd find at your local 24 Hour or Equinox, there is a multitude of platforms for box jumps, parallettes, a balance beam, clubbells, and kettlebells, among many other fun toys. Of course, there is also a squat rack, cable machine, and row machines. The owner of Move-SF, Coach Matt, is super friendly, with passionate knowledge about fitness. When I first met him though, to be honest, he was actually a bit intimidating, with his shaved bald head and flannel button up. Any fans of WCW and TNA will know what I mean when I say he reminds me of Konnan aka K-Dogg, sans the crazy earrings. As more and more people are growing weary of Globo Gyms, and are not quite willing to fork over insane stacks of fetty to join a fitness cult, facilities like Move-SF are certainly a welcome addition, and will continue to thrive. My current place of residence is a bit too far for me to patronize on a normal basis, but I look forward to attending any future workshops hosted here. read more

I decided to try a class at this place using ClassPass, since I was already in the area after a pole dancing class. And lo and behold, all four of us taking the class were ClassPass users lol - I guess that means it really is a great way to find new places around the city ;) The gym is really great, I think it's still fairly new... maybe? It is two levels, with a padded class/weights/kettlebell area on the main floor and a physiotherapy section at the back. The mats get cleaned before each class :) The lockers (bring your own lock if you want) are a bonus. The second level has another class area and cubbies. There's also weight machines and a treadmill. You're free to use it, but I think it was mentioned that this area was mainly used for personal training. Also, the staff are friendly and effective. Anyway, the class was sculpt: butt, arms & abs. Definitely got a workout with all three - a bit sore the day after. The class structure was different sets of exercises, 10 reps, 3 times each. Then move on to a different set of exercises. We used kettlebells, dumbbells, bodyweight, and rings. I particularly liked that this class was *not* taught in boot camp drill sergeant style, so you can really go at your own pace and up-level or down-level your exercises based on how you're feeling that day. Overall, great place and I'm sure I'll be back again soon to try something new! read more

I've been to the movement mash up class twice from class pass. Awesome strength training cross fit/ boot camp style class! It's a small studio with a lot of personal attention and the owner seems to walk around and introduce himself. Loving that this place is on class pass and close to my apartment! read more

Matt is the owner. He is great. I take his classes every Saturday. Just what you (should) expect from a small, well-run business: personal attention and attention to detail. His workout style is more focused on not getting hurt than pushing yourself to die. Still challenging enough. His dog is usually there, (at least for the class he teaches) which doesn't affect me at all. If you are afraid or allergic, then you should know. Sweet unassuming dog. Oh and this is the cleanest gym i have ever been too. He steam cleans the floor each time..........upstairs we usually go barefoot or socks. Nice. read more

I am beyond thankful for the day Sylvie walked into my job and we hit it off!!! She was looking for a lipstick and I was in search of a trainer. It worked out to say the least! I work pretty much standing in heels for about 8 hours a day as a makeup artist sometimes longer so to say I was in pain in the books of my body would be an understatement. Since I have been working and training one on one with Sylvie building strength and pushing myself, I can honestly say my pain in my shoulders is virtually gone, I have more energy, and I am strong than I have been in a long time! If you considering getting a personal trainer do it!!! It's one of the greatest investments in yourself you can make! Sylvie is one of the best trainers I have ever had and you will not be disappointed! read more

Love the 2 instructors I tried out recently. They cued amazing and their sets were fun and creative. I'd give 5 stars, though I felt really awkward when another instructor was yelling to me from the top of the stairs, "girl in pink, more shoulder blade!" Totally inappropriate. I later found out this was the owner. ** Please, no need to loudly yell a correction to me, unless you are the instructor I am working with. ** read more

As I reflect back on 2012 I can definitely count my attendance at Move-SF a genuine highlight. I attended a class on a whim and was was very challenged but inspired after that first class (despite being terribly sore). I have been attending the group classes: Fit to Move and Body Weight Evolution (both aptly named) for 5 months now. I have experienced an over all performance revamp. I am stronger, more toned and in better shape. The best things about the classes at Move-SF are the attention to detail of movement, form and coaching by Matt Tripp. The classes are small, contributing to a one on one style session and all levels are truly welcome. I could not do a push up at that first class even though others could I never felt intimidated. If you are looking for personalized coaching in a great fitness environment the classes at Move-SF are for you. All levels, diets, work out disciplines are welcome at this facility. read more

This is one of my favorite gyms in Pacific Heights. I'm an avid classpass goer and have been to almost all of the spots in pacific heights and move-sf takes the cake. I have tried the following classes: Fit To Move: Took this class on a Monday evening. Its a HIIT class with 40 seconds of work and 20 seconds of rest. Kelsey is a great instructor who shows you the correct form and how to do the exercises. If you can't do one because of an injury she will give you a modification. Sculpt Butt, Arms & Abs: Took this class with Casey. Casey is great and makes you do sets of exercises you repeat 3 times. These make your butt and legs and everything hurt. Casey also helps you with form and making sure you get a good sweat. The owner of move-sf is great and the front desk people are always very friendly and welcoming. I feel like they are here to make you learn and get into better shape. I also love solo the dog who is always hanging out at the gym. Will be coming back here for more but kicking. read more

Good gym! It's definitely on the smaller side but they make it work. You have to either take a class or be working with a personal trainer so that keeps the crowds down which is good. I took the body weight plus class at 6am and really liked it. It was kind of crossfit esque. We did two super sets, two tobada sets and then abs. When I read the board at first with the exercises I felt like it wouldn't take that long but it took the full hour and was hard, in a good way! There was five of us in the class which was perfect as it's a smaller space. I definitely liked the workout and will be back soon. Also, the owner has a puppy who is adorable. Huge bonus!! read more

Ok, take your favorite gym of all time, subtract the creepy dudes that go there just to check out everyone else, add state of the art equipment and pour on incredibly smart and personable personal trainers. Now you're getting close. Move SF has been built from the ground up by Matt Tripp, a seasoned trainer with a passion for Health and Fitness, and it shows. At first you think you've walked into a friends brand new loft apartment. Don't be fooled by Matt's friendly chatter (oh, there's chatter) and his fancy aluminum water cups OR his plush towels - how are they so SOFT?! No, this place is serious about training. And train you will, be it on the monkey bars, rope anchor... thingy or peg wall. He's got kettle bells, dumbbells, indian clubs, and plenty of tools to roll out muscles you didn't realize could get soar. I've been training at Move-sf for almost half a year with Mark Leffler, a renaissance man of fitness and vegan extraordinaire. With Mark's training and this facility, we've successfully transformed ourselves into our 2012 halloween costume, Spartans of 300! ...shameless plug, http://www.vegvogue.com/2012/10/30/halloween-costume-sparta/. Nuff said? In a nutshell, I can't endorse Matt's hard work and dedication enough. Move-sf sets the bar for SF gyms and it's only getting better. read more

The difference between Move-SF & other gyms I have frequented (or at least paid frequently) has been a remarkable motivator. The atmosphere is both professional and familiar in a way that is only possible when filled with people who love what they do and care about their clients. Matt Tripp has put his heart and passion into this training studio and it shows in every way. The trainers who work there are well educated and are focused on creating positive results for each client. My personal trainer, Mark Leffler, is no exception to this. Ultimately, I have finally found the people & the place where I can be successful in my health goals. Cheers for this, Matt. read more

I've been training with Mark for a few months now at move-sf. Mark is amazing on his own, put him in a beautiful, open space like move-sf and you've got a brilliant way to start off your day. The owner Matt is the real gem of the space, warm, friendlily and obviously passionate about fitness. He brings a level of energy to the place that makes you feel like you were working out in your own home. I highly recommend stopping in and asking for a session with Mark, I mean he got me ready for Tough Mudder. RANDOM BONUS: They have monkey bars :) read more

Ask for Lenny. Great workouts that are varied, challenging and fun. The hour just flies by and the results are great. The gym is awesome. Focus is on functional strength, flexibility and endurance. Very few machines - lots of great equipment (kettle bells, ropes, bands, balls, etc) and plenty of room to move. read more

Move-Sf has the best fitness classes. Times work well with my schedule and they are all manageable even in my "de-conditioned" state because everyone works at their own pace. The classes are small enough that instructors can take special care that moves are done properly and safely. If you have injuries or preexisting conditions they will help you do modified versions so you can still work out. I havent tried the personal training, but you get so much attention in the small group that I havent felt like I really needed it. Owner Matt is also really great about sharing his vast knowledge of nutrtion and overall health. Move really takes the work out of working out and it has become my go to de-stresser in these crazy times read more

I can't sing Sylvie's praises enough. I am so incredibly grateful to have found her. I had hip surgery in January of last year but after 16 weeks of physical therapy and still in pain I decided I needed to find someone that could help me get stronger. I've never been a gym person and was always afraid of hurting myself even further. I met with Sylvie and told her my whole story and all about my injuries. She was so patient and because she also had hip surgery a few years prior she knew exactly what I was going through and how she could help me. This month will be a year that I've been working with her and I've never felt stronger or more motivated to continue getting even stronger. I could barely walk when I came into that gym and now she has me doing things I never imagined I'd be able to do. If you're out there looking for a trainer but are a little afraid, Sylvie's your gal. She will walk you through every exercise, make sure that you are doing it properly so you don't hurt yourself and even make you feel like a bad @$$. Best of all she does it with a smile and an infectious laugh. She truly is a great trainer and an all around great person! read more

This place will make you sweat, your legs burn and your arms tremble. It's a little terrifying the first time, but if you want to sculpt your body, this is the real deal. The place is incredibly friendly and the small size means lots of personal attention; important when you're shaking kettle bells around. I liked how they made adjustments for my lower back issues too. Be prepared to ache the next day, and to be challenged. This is where I go when I want to push myself, a little too intense for everyday but great overall. read more

I love it here! It's very homey and intimate. The classes are never more than a few of people and you get individualized attention! I've been here a handful of times and I always get an awesome workout. This local gym really makes me feel like I'm a part of a community. There is a sweet dog that mildly freaks me out at times (he hallucinates looking at the light on the walls - LOL). read more

I've been taking Shawn Besabella's classes at Move-SF for the past few months now and have genuinely enjoyed all of them! Most classes are focused on body weight exercises and get you walking out drenched in sweat. If you're looking for a good and challenging 45 min - 1 hr work out, you definitely should check out one of Shawn's classes! He definitely pushes you to give it your all, but not in a scary/angry way. :) His classes also have the best music that will push you to get that extra rep in before the time is up. I've noticed my endurance has improved since I've taken his classes, which was one of my main goals. Highly recommend checking out one of his classes at Move-SF! read more

This is a great place to build strength. I've been to a few classes here (Movement Mash-Up, Body Burn and Body Weight Plus) and all 3 instructors were easy to follow with the right amount of energy. Don't come here expecting a bootcamp style workout - this is not a high intensity workout and you won't walk out dripping sweat, but I promise you that you'll be sore (and I'm not always sore from those 1-hour bootcamp sweat sessions). All the classes I've taken are a nice combo of strength, cardio and stretching. Sweat factor is 4-5 out of 10. Bonus - showers, towels and water (with cups). read more

Love the bodyweight plus class with Casey! His class is not for the weak. He kept the class fun and brought tons of energy, especially for 6 a.m. I liked that there was some HIIT mixed in too. Also, major bonus points for showers! I only wish I lived closer. I wouldn't complain if move-sf opened more locations. :) read more

I have been training with Ashley for almost 9 months now. She has been amazing and very supportive of my goals. She took into account what I wanted as well as added in what I needed. Getting me stronger, leaner, and fixing my posture. From day one, she kicked my butt; I have never felt better. She helped me set up a program that worked for my schedule, and helped me with my nutritional changes. She even wrote a meal plan for me to follow, so I had to put minimal effort into changing my habits because it was right there in front of me. If you are looking for a knowledgeable trainer, who will always encourage you to keep going (while she puts you to work), and help you get the results you want. Ashley is the trainer for you. read more

I have been going to move-sf for over a year, after taking a variety of different small group exercise classes in SF and even went to Marin for a short-time. What I really like about move: Small classes (limited to 9 pax), variety of HIIT classes including a body burn, tabata, crossfit which they change up all the time, personalized attention - they pay attention and make corrections if necessary, nice and friendly instructors, clean and well-run. For me, it's also super convenient as it's walking distance, but I've typically always driven to my classes so that hasn't always been a priority. The owner, Matt, is also pretty much always present, and is flexible to work with if you are there regularly. I believe they also take class pass, and are on zenrez, if you just want to mix it up with other classes. Highly recommend! read more

I trained with Matt at move-sf twice a week for over 2 years in 2013-14. He is the real deal Holyfield. His thirst for knowledge may never be quenched and I learned so much about all things fitness, including but not limited to posture, nutrition, breathing, fascia and old school hip hop. The space is high end with all of the unique cutting edge equipment of a boutique gym but without the pretension and related b.s. During my transformation I got to know some of the other trainers, Mark, Kate, Omar and Sedo, all good peeps who know their stuff. read more

I have been training with Herberto last year to fix my shoulder problem in move sf gym. I have been living with that issue for more than 15 years of my life. This gym is awesome. Matt T is my trainer and he is incredibly talented, knowledgeable and gets results. He's also a smart, great guy and fun to talk to during the sessions. The gym has an awesome, positive, professional, community vibe. And I hit my three months goals in 5 weeks. I've been to many gyms and had many trainers, and this place is really special. If you can get a slot, take it! Highly recommended. read more

This is for the group fitness classes. They have a nice variety of classes that are challenging in their different ways and have limited class size. Movement mash-up is boot camp style Bodyweight is ... well, bodyweight exercises -but these really make you work up a sweat. And you can add weights if you need, and the instructor will help you with these modifications. Body burn - MY FAVORITE! cardio cardio cardio in the tabata style, and it really makes an hour fly by. It's a 2-story space so there can be multiple classes going on at a time without them interfering with one another. The trainers are all great, personable and friendly, and offer modifications for both easy and harder. It just has a great feel, laid-back but serious at the same time?... The clientele who I've seen (both in class and at personal training sessions) are a wide range of age, which it's kind of nice to see. The owner has a sweet sweet pitbull, who just somehow has spidey sense and knows when there is a recovery time during the workout to come over and give you a quick kiss of encouragement :) DOGDOGDOG They have showers, clean bathrooms, lockers, and the equipment and mats are clean and not smelly either. Their mats are the really soft type (kind of the ones you would see at a boxing place) but they steam clean them frequently. I do all the workouts barefoot and have had no problems. You can choose to workout shoes/socks/barefoot, which is kind of nice to get that kind of freedom. There is NO designated parking, so bike here because they let you bring your bike inside too. read more

Really great instructors- Daniel is great and the owner is super friendly. Do not go here if you have allergies. There is the owners dog hair EVERYWHERE on the mats. read more

Honestly, really disappointed in this place. I took a 6:00am Sculpt drop-in class, and expected to sweat, especially since I hadn't worked out in a while. The class was slow, way too easy, and even got boring. At one point someone had to ask the instructor to change the music since it was so slow. Normally, it wouldn't have been a big deal, but the class was $35! That's on the same level (even more expensive) than a Barrys Bootcamp or SoulCycle, with great facilities and a guaranteed good workout. I walked out wishing I had just worked out in my apartment. read more

This place changed my life. Was an Equinox member for 10 years in New York and San Francisco but quit when I found Move SF. I met Move-SF's owner Matt Tripp about 8 years ago when I was working at farmers market. He's one of those trainers that's always learning and adapting his methods, but his training philosophy is completed rooted in common sense, whole body movements and real food based nutrition. He maintains a high personal standard that's reflected in all of his trainers. You really can't find a bad trainer here. I've taken one-on-one sessions with Matt, but the bulk of my own experience with the gym is in the excellent group classes. They're a unique hybrid of mobility work designed to get your joints pain free and fluid, high intensity calisthenics that really push you and a cool down/stretching session that's basically yoga without all the mumbo jumbo. The classes are filled with a bunch extremely funny people. Classes sometimes come to a halt from laughter (which is not a bad thing at all). Here are the result of 6 months of these classes. -all of my lifts have gone up without much concentration on them (bench press, deadlift, squat) -I'm climbing better than I have in years -I reached my 2012 goal of doing 30 consecutive pull-ups -My flexibility has improved dramatically -Most importantly, I've done this without injury of any kind The facility itself is very modern and filled with equipment familiar to most people (squat racks, benches, dumbbells) and a gang of strength tools that are less familiar, but highly effective (clubbells, kettle bells, battle ropes). The showers blast hot water and are extremely clean. The only negative about this gym is that parking is really challenging sometimes, but that's read more

I've been working with a trainer here for six months and love it. It's immaculately clean and well maintained. The equipment is state-of-the-art and in perfect condition. They offer both group sessions and personal trainers. It's two levels with everything you could want in s gym. It's for anyone seriously committed to fitness and people like me who are totally out of shape and want to get fit. No gym bunnies here. Lots of excellent trainers and sweating clients! Recommended without reservation. read more

Move-SF is a fantastic gym! I've trained at quite a few gyms through my years of working out and this is by far one of the best places I've been at. It's a loft-style setup with monkey-bars and an open back room for group training on the bottom floor, while the large top floor is fully open with high-quality equipment along the perimeter. The entire place is hooked up with a Sonos sound system that can play different tunes at independent volumes throughout the facility. The owner, Matt Tripp, is a super friendly guy who has put a lot of energy and love into everything that is Move-SF. He always has a smile on his face and greets anyone who walks through the doors. If you let him, he'll talk your ear off (but in a good way) about any facit of training. He definitely knows his stuff and is incredibly passionate about all things health and physical fitness. All the trainers at Move-SF really seem to know their stuff and promote healthy, proper personal training too. They pay attention to your posture and correct things that you are doing wrong, preventing any chance of potential injury unlike a lot of past gyms that I've gone to. You also won't see anyone trying to push supplements to you just to fill a gym quota. Mark Leffler (my brother) is one of the personal trainers there who trains my best friend and I together. We actually just recently finished up a six month "300 club" (http://www.vegvogue.com/2012/10/30/halloween-costume-sparta/) regiment which Mark structured and master-minded. He pushed us to levels that we didn't think were possible physically or mentally. Definitely check out Move-SF if you're looking for a friendly, highly competent group of trainers with a clean, high-quality equipment and space setup! read more
