This spot makes an outrageous jalapeno/white cheddar popcorn. All of their cheddar cheese offerings--cheddar, white cheddar, or in combination with buffalo spice, caramel, loaded potato--render me delirious. I also find that dill pickle and theater butter are winning choices. The corn kernel selected for popping is locally sourced from West Virgina, non-GMO and produces a flowery, large puff. It's a thing of beauty. I do know a thing or two about popcorn. My grandpa George was a corn farmer for nearly 50 years. I'd give Mountaineer 5 stars however recently tried to ship some bundles as gifts and encountered problems with the website when ordering. Even though the ladies behind the counter of the store are probably sick of people looking up and saying "uhmmm" while looking at the flavors for 15 minutes trying to decide - they were extremely nice! I had to stop in after looking at their reviews and the flavors of popcorn. They're out of this world. Do not miss this spot if you're in shepherdstown. They have all sizes of popcorn for purchase, from small bags to huge buckets. We opted to try small bags of a few different flavors. We tried the cookies and cream (my favorite), dill pickle, harvest mix, and pretzel honey mustard. All were delicious but the cookies and cream had so much flavor it was absolutely my favored flavor. Hunks of Oreos just mixed in with the popcorn, yum. The harvest mix was also great, it had everything from candy corn to chocolate covered pretzels. Mountaineer Popcorn is one of those really cool places that you think about long after you've left...mainly because you wonder if you should have purchased more! This tiny shop is located in historic Shepherdstown, WV. It's very no-frills, but the star of the show here is the popcorn, which comes in an array of flavors from the traditional cheddar and caramel to the more adventurous Breakfast Munch (vanilla-flavored popcorn tossed in breakfast cereals like Fruity Pebbles, Fruit Loops, etc.) and Crabby Caramel (caramel popcorn sprinkled with Old Bay Seasoning). Recently read a review that said Mountaineer Popcorn was Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory but with popcorn and I completely agree. With sliding doors opening to display giant containers of flavored popcorn you would be surprise that this place is bigger than it looks. One of our highlights for our trip to Shepherdstown WV, we stopped in later in the afternoon on a colder Wednesday in February. The streets and stores were quiet but that was good for us as we didn't have to wait for others to finish picking their sweet or savory treats. We were able to have a run down of their operation before driving in to some samples. They have four different sizes for popcorn, we opted to get mini bags so that we could get more than one flavor for ourselves and our friends. I must have tried six or seven different flavors. A few that stood out to me, was the pretzel, honey mustard; with bits of pretzel thrown in along with a good coating of honey mustard on the pretzels and popcorn. Another one was the Crabby Caramel that was a dusting of Old Bay Spice along with caramel that gave it a salt and sweet vibe. The one that I ended up taking home with me was the Dill Popcorn that was a nice sour flavor to the crunchy popcorn. I grabbed Garlic Parmesan, Strawberry Chocolate Drizzle, Red Hot and Jalapeno Cheddar for our friends. I am usually happy with their product - flavored popcorn. That's what one expects to buy. This time though, I bought the 'flavor' of cinnamon toast crunch thinking it would taste like the cereal. Sounds good, right? What I got instead was a bag half-filled with flavored popcorn and half-filled with the actual cereal. They pop daily so it's easy to find fresh product here: they have so many good flavors but their cheese popcorns are particularly impressive IMO. My husband and I were on a date day and stumbled into their storefront. We grew up in a beach town that had a guy who always sold kettle corn on the boardwalk so we were looking for that nostalgic taste. There were a ton of flavors to choose from, but the staff answered all our questions. We got 4 mini bags so we could have a sampling of different flavors. We couldn't decide on the last flavor so we asked them to surprise us. So we get home that evening, pop in a movie and open the popcorn. Holy moly. The kettle corn is waaaay better than anything we had back home. Not too sweet but just that hint of sweetness. My husband inhaled the whole mini bag and I had to yell at him to get some. The caramel corn was rich, it didn't taste like just sugar, which makes me think they're using quality caramel. The Chesapeake was what you would expect. The dill pickle was our surprise and it was better than I thought. They don't overdo any flavors, they let the popcorn flavor come through. My only constructive criticism would be to have a more descriptive menu because I felt bad asking about every flavor. But that's nit picking. read more
