So we ordered two different kind of hotdogs, the Bernie, which was Kraut and thousand Island dressing which was cooked perfectly. The only thing I would've liked is to have the Kraut a little bit more tangy than what it was, but it was very nicely presented, and the other hot dog was a chili dog with cheese, which was super loaded with toppings and was like a full meal and a half in itself. The meal was finished off with an orange pineapple upside down cake sundae, which was a pound cake topped with orange, soft serve and pineapple topping, which probably weighed in at around 3 or 4 pounds, and it was definitely an item that was to be shared because there was no way one person could physically sit down and eat that without a brain freeze. Incredibly nice, loads of fun. Everybody was friendly and the customers that were in line at nine were still served after nine when they had shut down. This is a must stop for anybody looking for a great old-fashioned ice cream stand with phenomenal prices and a large selection of sandwich's, subs, and side items. You can't go wrong.

We sat on a stone ledge to enjoy our meal when a police officer parked nearby. He sniffed and smiled and said "Ah, Whistle Punk. Nice sandwich. But you want to know the best beef here?" We did, and he pointed in the direction of Keep It Smokin' B.B.Q. He said their their pit beef was excellent but their pit pork was even better. I love recommendations from someone who knows, and his was spot on. We wandered over and watched the operation for a few minutes. The owner offered us a taste of the beef; it was charcoal-charred, really juicy, tender, and rubbed with a pepper-forward spice. It was incredible - easily one of the top three I've tasted anywhere. Ah, but then he offered tastes of pit pork loin, crunchy exterior yet dripping with juices. I've eaten a boatload of Philly Pork sandwiches but this, this, THIS made them all taste like charcoal. Neither one needed onions or tiger sauce or BBQ sauce or anything other than delicious meat. Their prices and portions were reasonable. My only complaint is that their truck doesn't come to my county so I'm gonna have to drive to them - and I will. Ahhhhhhhhhhh.

My son found The Girls Joint a few weeks ago--and of course, he had to bring his mama!…read moreAnd yes, mama is intentional. I'm a Louisiana girl myself, so the minute I walked in and met these two lovely sisters from Southwest Louisiana, I knew I was in the right place. What an absolute gem. I wasn't even planning to take food home--we were headed for a walk afterward and I didn't have a cooler--but I couldn't leave without trying the gumbo and their homemade sausage. These wonderful women literally made me a makeshift ice chest out of a cardboard box, complete with a bag of ice, so I could safely take everything home. They even wrote sweet little handwritten instructions telling me exactly how to reheat the rice and sausage. That kind of warmth and hospitality is Louisiana through and through. And then I got home and tasted the gumbo. OH. MY. GOD. I make a mean gumbo myself, so I do not give out gumbo compliments lightly. This was absolutely delicious--a deep, dark, rich roux, incredible flavor, tender chicken, and that fantastic homemade sausage. One of the sisters also told me they use fresh pork casings from a butcher for their homemade sausage rather than packaged casings, and you can taste the care that goes into it. The sausage is outstanding on its own and absolutely perfect in that gumbo. And now we need to address the great Louisiana debate: potato salad in the gumbo. I'm from New Orleans, and I have NEVER put potato salad in my gumbo. The Girls sent some home with me, though, so I thought, All right, I'm going in. And guess what? I liked it! Am I promising I'll put potato salad in my gumbo from now on? Let's not get carried away. But I thoroughly enjoyed it, and The Girls may have moved this New Orleans girl a little closer to the other side of the great gumbo debate. My son and I also split one of their s'mores cookies before we left--warm, gooey marshmallow goodness and ridiculously good. But what I may have loved most was meeting The Girls themselves. The food is authentic and wonderful, but so is the hospitality. There is something special about finding a little piece of Louisiana when you're far from home. I love that my son discovered this place --and even more that he wanted to bring his Louisiana mama there to meet The Girls. You've got a new fan. I'll be back!
