I was putting off my next dental visit because of some sensitivity I had been having with my teeth. After the dog ate my night guard I decided it was time. With this visit I also decided to try out a new dentist. Dr. Thompson at Pacific Oak Dental came highly recommended to me by a friend, so I decided to check it out even though it was a little bit of a drive for me. For starters, the building is very nice, updated and very clean. I was promptly greeted with a smiling staff member. I had x-rays, an exam, cleaning, and they were also able to take impressions for my night time grind guard. I was happy that they were able to fit all of that in within 2 hours. Dr. Thompson didnt just pop in and take a quick look and leave like others I have experienced in the past. He looked around and was very thorough. The personal touch goes a long way. He discussed any concerns I had, what I wanted in the future, and also what he recommended that I 'should' do. Not once did it seem as though any of them were pressuring me to buy something. Thank you! My hygenist was personable, Bri was her name. Super easy to talk to, friendly and she was a gentle flosser. (BONUS POINTS) After everything was done they took me to the consultation room where they had everything broken down for me. What was covered by my ins. What wasnt. Etc. It is always nice to know right away what it is going to cost to do the things I want to do in future visits before leaving. This gives me plenty of time to think about options, budget etc. Needless to say, I rescheduled my follow up visit for mynight guard and will also be returning for another cleaning in November. Highly recommended.

This is all based on memory from a few years back, but I always meant to leave a review. On the positive side, my hygienist was very good. She had a very personable demeanor and did a great job with my cleaning. The office is newer and a nice place to visit. Seems modern and efficient with all the latest equipment. On the negative side, two of the procedures, one was the fluoride treatment and I cant recall the other one, were NOT covered by insurance, which they knew since they didn't even attempt to bill it, and I walked out having paid over $200 out of pocket. It was never explained to me that those procedures were extra, but I did notice she asked me if it was "okay" to do them, which I found odd. I've never had this happen before and was a bit confused. Another thing I thought was weird is that I had scheduled with one dentist who was covered by my insurance, but when I got there they said another dentist would see me that day, who wasn't covered by my insurance. I mean, maybe that's okay?? It seemed a little fishy to me. It was unclear to me whether or not the original guy I was supposed to see ever actually came in or if it were all just some sleight of hand to out-maneuver standard insurance practices. The hygienist made some puzzling comment over never actually seeing him much and "oh we do some work with him sometimes." ? The guy I did see put me off right away. This was during the height of Covid and he walked in, pulled his mask off, sat 5 feet from me and made a negative comment about social distancing while rolling his eyes. So I just spent that short time with him trying not to breathe. I was strongly pressured to schedule a visit to have all of my cavities replaced and schedule a visit to the orthodontist they refer to. My prior dentist, who I had to stop seeing since I moved out of state, strongly warned me to avoid any dentist who attempted to tell me my cavities needed replacing and that it was unethical to suggest that I should. The dental practice I went to after my single visit to New Smiles told me the same thing albeit in a gentler manner. I was asked about scheduling that visit twice before I left in a "you really need to get this done ASAP" kind of way. To this day I still havent had a single one replaced. I seem to recall there was some issue with the time of my appointment too but I cant remember what. Something like they thought I was supposed to come in on another day? I was confused and had to show them my appointment reminder to prove I was there when I was supposed to be. Then I was told I was "lucky" that they could squeeze me in. Anyway, I never went back. I am extremely happy with my new dentist. If your dentist ever says anything along the lines of "you have $X left on your insurance and we need to spend that by a certain date" RUN

I am also not one to leave reviews unless I really feel compelled to. It's been a few years, and my feelings haven't changed. My first impressions were positive. The hygienists are very kind and thorough. I don't believe they are the problem at all. However, red flags started popping up when the dentist began pushing a tooth extraction and an implant. They had noticed something on my xray that they believe indicated my tooth needed to be removed sooner rather than later, however I never experienced pain or discomfort from this tooth. They sat me down in a room with their insurance person and told me how it would go down. As someone who is under 30 and never had any dental issues in my life, I was confused. I have also been told many times over my teeth look great. They referred me to an endodontist. Payed $300+ out of pocket for a 20 minute appointment for him to say "yeah, well maybe, maybe not we will have to wait and see." They also casually mentioned that the owners of the dentist establishment were their good friends. I did not follow up with a tooth extraction or implant following this appointment because the endodontist didn't say it was necessary at this time. I went back for another cleaning 6 months later and AGAIN was heavily pushed to schedule an extraction and implant. My intuition told me to get a second opinion, because something felt off. My gut was telling me this wasn't in my best interest and not for the sake of my dental health. As a young person who has never had dental issues in their life I felt like I was being taken advantage of. It felt as though they thought I was naïve. It felt as though this establishment was truly just a business trying to make themselves and their friends money. I have visited 2 other dentists since my experience here and have asked them point blank if I needed a tooth extraction and implant because a previous dentist told me that I did. I told them exactly what the dentist at Orenco Station told me. Both dentists I have seen since said no. AND if that were the case, extraction and implant should not be the first plan of action for someone so young who is also not experiencing any pain or discomfort. There should always be an effort to save the tooth. I still do not have problems or pain with said tooth. It's been 3+ years. I understand each dentist has their difference in opinion and can use their own discretion, especially in private practice. Some are more proactive and some are reactive. However, my experience was that this place was purely a business looking to make money. They did not make me feel like they had good intentions or my best interest in mind. They were VERY pushy to undergo expensive treatments. For future or current patients of this place, just use your own discretion. Advocate for yourself. Get a second opinion. Trust your intuition. This is just my experience I felt compelled to share.

For those who like pros and cons lists, I have several pros and one con listed below. Pros -- - Friendly People. Everybody there is incredibly friendly. They remember you and make you feel cared about. - Great Care. Cleanings have been incredibly thorough and treatment has been great. I had a cavity filled there, and it was quick and painless! - Timliness. They are prompt and get you in at your scheduled time. You don't end up waiting around in the waiting room forever. - Honesty. They communicate with you honestly about your dental health. They don't tell you that there are cavities that need to be treated when there aren't. They look at certain areas that may become problems down the road and do everything they can to prevent them from becoming problems. They don't do extensive work prematurely, which I love. Cons -- - The Music. This is one that may have changed. Usually I wouldn't mention the music that is played at a place, but I find it very distracting here. The music they were playing was terrible covers of top 40 songs. I don't mind popular music, however, the covers were pretty painful to listen to, with singers who sing flat notes and just don't sound great. It's distracting. I wouldn't mind some better music to listen to during my visits. This place is great, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good, honest dentist.
