Got it back after a few short days and will be getting some further work done as time goes on. This truck had belonged to my former landlord whereupon his daughter sold it to me as the old boy had gone to a retirement facility. In his later years maintenance and repairs had been let go but being sturdy and strong running, I bought it and am slowly bringing it up to snuff and it is good in the event I should need to do any long distance traveling with it. . Attended the new shop opening, located just off I-25 and Colorado route 66, where I met Mr. Maggio's family and some of the other customers who call Hands On Autotech their home for vehicle repair and servicing. I first went there based on the recommendation of the Martino troubleshooter show on 630 KHOW AM radio; 10 AM - 2PM, M-F. My opinion is that Tom's shop takes something of a scientific approach to vehicle repair and will go more in depth with an analyses than another shop I had been to for an issue with my '99 Tahoe. As an EV owner himself I gather that Tom is up on the current tech, perhaps more than some other places who would have men of my age (68) from the "dinosaur era" of automotive tech working at their shops.

There was a problem with the communication surrounding the tow transfer so I started my experience with Hands on Auto Tech with some trepidation. Tom handled the situation and we moved onto the real problem with my truck. The diagnosis was the clutch so I approved the repair and waited a few days for the parts to arrive and the repair to proceed. After the clutch was replaced another problem with the operation of the clutch was discovered so I agreed to the additional repair and another day for repair. After a week I was reunited with my truck. The repair was costly, lengthy and unexpected but coming out the other side of this experience I learned a couple of lessons. 1. If you have your vehicle towed to a shop follow the tow truck to the shop and verify the transfer. 2. Communication and follow up throughout the repair are key Tom was great to deal with and I feel that he was honest with me about the repairs needed and the cost of those repairs. Having recently moved to the area I feel my vehicle maintenance and repair needs can be checked off the list. I can recommend Hands on Auto Tech to anyone needing an honest repair facility and Tom as a good guy to deal with.

Even gave me suggestions on what would need to be done to make it a better driver, on what is expected to be maintained, what the kinks were and what the build of the car was. And that's just the inspection sheet. When we then talked on the phone it was a great talk about my personal intentions of the vehicle and what I could do with those intentions that would make it an even BETTER driver. Which then led to the common mistakes when dealing with classic car restorations and what I could do to avoid making those same mistakes in the future. The vehicle not being provided with a spec sheet, any more detail other than the engine and transmission, I was unaware of the details the dealership holding the car had themselves. That being said, I'm now informed on the car being built to be "original" and very very special which is on the other end of the spectrum I was looking for (mainly because my intention of replacing the guts to turn into a daily driver and I feel would be a catastrophe to take that away from someone who'd want an original). Whether or not I end up with the vehicle, he more than helped me understand where this vehicle sits. Thank you to Mike for setting everything up and being communicative. To Norris for being insanely knowledgeable, informative, quick, on his feet and a bad ass dude for being as helpful and straightforward as you'd want. Awesome work yall !

If you usually hesitate to go to a shop but have been considering this one maybe because you don't know much about transmissions (like me) or whatever the case may be, please allow me to confirm your worst fears and save you the nightmare that I went through with Autolab. To be fair, I can't speak to their actual mechanical knowledge or ability (I will explain this further), but the level of negligence, disrespect, and unprofessionalism I was shown makes me glad they didn't get work on my truck. So when the transmission went out on my truck early April 2026, I decided (even though I do most of my own repairs) to take it to a shop to have it fixed since I don't know much about transmission. Autolab had really great reviews and I decided to give them a try. They were quick to diagnose it as needing a rebuild or replacement, and quoted me around 8,000 for that. To their credit they did try to help cut that down, finding a used transmission for 2,000 less or giving me the option to just bring them one if I could find it for less. I told them I needed a few days to get the money together for it, and they said no problem. So far so good right? Well after a week had passed and I realized I probably wouldn't be able to get quite that much together, I decided I should have it towed back home and put it in myself. My dad, who is part owner of the truck, paid the diagnostic fee and I called and told the shop I would let them know when the tow truck driver would come by for it. Well as soon as their fee was paid they moved my truck out to a 2 hour limit parking zone for 4 hours while knowing the plates on the truck were bad. The reason I know that they knew this was because on the first day they had it, they had called and said they had a momentary hiccup when they tried to look the vehicle up on their systems by the license plate and it didn't match so they used the VIN. Now it is certainly not their fault I had the tags from my dad's old Chevy Colorado on this truck and hadn't switched them over yet because the transmission went out and it didn't seem very urgent, but they lied to my face saying they had no idea the tags were bad. Regardless, I find it extremely negligent to park a vehicle that you have been entrusted with on a public street for any amount of time. Their argument was that the tow truck can't get it off if it's on the property, fine, but you wait until the tow truck driver is there to move it, not dump it on the street as soon as you get your money in a spot that you clearly can't even see from the shop since somehow nobody noticed it getting impounded later that afternoon, and I only found out about it when my tow truck driver arrived and told me he couldn't find the truck anywhere and no one at the shop knew about it or where it was. To me the least they could have done in this case was offer to pay the impound fee, since they were the ones who parked it on the street which I never agreed to, or even apologize that it had happened but instead the owner was short and rude with me, never once apologized, and just to top off the disrespect they blocked my number from their shop (and no, I hadn't been spam calling them or anything) so they wouldn't have to deal with it. I got my truck home from impound after several hundred more dollars that should have gone into getting it repaired. I can say for sure that this shop doesn't care about you or your vehicle. They care about money and once they realized there would be no further money in it for them all pretense of caring came to a very abrupt halt. They have no respect for their customers, and the extreme level of unprofessionalism makes me question if they actually did anything when they diagnosed it or if they just tell everyone they need a new transmission that'll be 8 grand. Do yourself a favor and stay away from Autolab.
