From local mini hikes in the Big Trees forest, to a plethora of vineyards/wineries, spa and shopping...to longer treks to Yosemite and stop at the Sacramento Zoo before flying back home. WHAT a hidden gem! Went here for the weekend with my family of 4 and stayed in Unit 1, right next to the club house. The unit was clean and had everything we needed. 2 bedrooms both with King size beds, 3 bathrooms, a fully stocked kitchen and lovely living space with a fire place. The club house has a very nice heated pool and hot tub, along with a sauna and gym. The place had lots of snow in mid march and you can walk to the Sequoia Woods country club restaurant. (also amazing but make reservations). The staff was kind and very helpful. Check in was a breeze and all our questions were answered. They provide games, movies, puzzles and firewood up front. Looking forward to booking another stay in the summer so we can take advantage of all the hiking around the facility. read more

Our cabin was really not too bad for the price. Granted it was a bit dated but fairly well maintained. It is also roomier than other newer ones I have stayed in. Kitchen have most of the equipment you would need to prepare a nice home cooked meal. Plenty of towels in the bathroom but some of the toiletries are missing (no shampoo or conditioner?) Linens are clean and the sofa sleeper was reasonably comfy despite being a little springy. No issues with check-in or check out. Wouldn't mind staying again in the future. read more

This is a wonderful resort for a relaxing and a quiet place to vacation. There are lots of sites to see and things to do in the area. Located at about 4000 feet elevation near evergreens and deciduous trees, the resort offers cool evenings, pine scented fresh air, a friendly and accommodating staff, evening activities Tuesday through Friday, comfortable beds and other amenities. Calaveras Big Trees State Park is only 3 miles from the resort and is very interesting and offers guided tours by docents with interesting information to share. There is a scenic byway further up Hwy 4, wine tasting and museums in the area. Several restaurants are available in the town of Arnold. This is a great place to spend some time. read more

Wow! The service was incredible. Very friendly and happy place. They go out of their way to make sure all your needs are met. Ice cream social and fun events and fantastic location with tons of trees and fresh air. Fun pool and hot tub inside for the kids to use all year around. The restaurant across the street is not recommended if you don't know them or are a member of the club. I walked in and everyone stared at me. I asked with my two kids in tow if we were allowed to be there and they said yes and continued to stare. I started to wonder. Finally after 4 minutes of sitting in an empty restaurant for service, someone (another patron) said I needed to order drinks at the bar where all the people were staring at us. Then order from the table for food. It was all just awkward. read more

Was looking for places to stay in Arnold for a weekend get away for my wife's birthday, wasn't many options in Arnold it's a small town. This was by far the best place you could stay besides an actual cabin you rent out. The staff was EXTREMELY WELCOMING AND KIND. The three ladies working the front desk were some of the most kind ladies and had some of the best customer service we have experienced since traveling. It's got a pool and a hot tub and it's right on the golf course. Not far and off in a quite area with a little river running through it. We will definitely be back this summer and many more to come. WOW , one of the best places I've stayed at , both in value ,accommodations and location . it was a last minute thing and i wasn't sure what type of establishment it was IE, hotel,motel,resort ? It had immaculate rooms and grounds , the front staff was so kind and professional and being in the business i would tell management to leave the front of the house to do just that ,keep them in the front not double duty doing laundry. As for the grounds keepers , a Huge BRAVO , what a job and so well done , they deserve a raise. Everyone was so helpful and nice with big smiles even when you see them doing hard work , just wow, this place is underrated.better service then some 5 stars I,ve stayed at and the location was just as surprising , the town Arnold ,everyone was so nice ,at the lake some kids offered to teach my son to fish , at the Calveras park the rangers and staff were so kind and informative , even the supermarket people were kind and nice . I cant say enough about how great the experience was and how everyone was so friendly . the retreat is a great place but the staff made it an excellent place. Oh my gosh! What a beautiful location with a great cabins for family vacations. Our cabin was nestled right next to a brook. The cabin is quite spacious and quaint. As we walked in we noticed there was plenty of storage, steps leading up to both rooms and two more bathrooms. In the very spacious kitchen everything was clean and well stocked then you walk into the very spacious living room. The living room has a fireplace and a half a bath. You have a wraparound patio on the lower floor and a patio coming out of the master bedroom on the top floor. The place was a little dated but that just adds to the character of such a cool place. There are guest journals to document your wonderful stay here at Mountain Retreat resort. My family and I had an incredible time. The kids loved the clubhouse with the private movie theater pool table and full kitchen. The staff are very nice can't wait to come back next year. My only complaint was the indoor pool was not working, but with so many local activities to do we were very busy. read more

As a family of four- born in raised in central cal and now living in south Orange County this place is a Mecca. The space, friendly folks, and cleanliness is surberb. It's a fantastic, hospitable cabin in a gorgeous location. We've had a blast. If you expect your name on linen, Starbucks, or some amount of appreciation because you survive living in the Bay Area, spare us all and don't come here. Go to Napa and leave Calaveras alone. The people here rock and if you can't deal with slow and casual, perhaps you should just stay home. Bottom line- clean friendly and fun! Don't expect anything else from a place!j read more

Relaxing trip but unit was dated It's a small compound with a very nice looking check-in bldg. It was new, had an indoor pool, full size billiard table, small movie theater and lounge area with kitchen. We hoped the units looked the same. Not! Ours had a long, meandering, creaky bridge to the front door. Entry was cool because you don't need a key; it's a keypad. Kitchen is small and quite dated, some cookware wasn't useable and there were no real chef's knives. The fridge door can't open all the way because it's blocked by the range; curious design. And it was quite dirty. I wiped up a water spill and the paper towel was black after only one swipe. There's a toilet upstairs and two more downstairs, along with the two bedrooms, but only one bath/shower so it's a jack-n-jill bathroom arrangement. Lighting was just barely sufficient to read with. I read at the kitchen table which had the best light. The small decks weren't really useable either because they were blocked by trees so you couldn't see anything but the neighbors, and were very messy. We did get to walk across the street to play golf a couple times and eat at the restaurant, lunch deli and bar. All were pretty good. Sarafina's in Arnold was good for dinner and the Arnold Pantry was pretty good for breakfast. Calaveras Big Trees State Park was quite nice; we went there a couple days to hike the trails. We had to leave a day early ... mandatory evacuation due to the Butte Fire. Hope the fire doesn't make it to Arnold or the resort! read more

We were visiting Calavares Big Trees National Park and found this place super close to the park. Just five minutes from the park entrance, the Mountain Retreat was great - extremely reasonable for what they provided. The staff was super nice and helpful, we were given a lovely two bedroom condo and they offer great amenities including a pool and playroom for my daughter. The property is older but it is extremely clean and well kept. We would highly recommend. read more

I have stayed here the past 4 years in a row; The staff here is great, and the renovated lodge is very nice, however the units have not been updated since they were built. They units are spacious and great for groups, they are clean, they are just not modern. There is a Sony tape player deck for a stereo, and still a VHS player. The hot water also is very limited! The upsides are that it is quiet and beautiful scenery convenient to Bear Valley and the sequoias. There is a strip mall close by as well as restaurants (Snowshoe Brewery is good. When there is snow there is a great sledding hill on the golf course. Washer/Dryer in unit along with full kitchen (dishwasher/full fridge..but limited pots/pans etc), a nice fireplace, and deck. We stayed here the last weekend in March. There had been no snow fall for the last week or so yet the snow pack is about 5 feet around the buildings. The parking lot and roadways were clear. We arrived at 4pm. The snow in the pathway to the condo was not shoveled. We had to make our own path, balance ourselves in the unstable pack of snow while carrying our bag, and risk falling. Two little old ladies next door had fallen twice already and told us to complain too so they could have their path shovel. When we got to the door, the key did not work. Front desk gave the wrong key so we have to go back the unshoveled path and get a replacement key. My friend borrowed a shovel in the office and shoveled the snow so we won't break our legs. There was no firewood available anywhere. SERVICE was POOR. The place itself is QUITE, surrounded with blanket of white snow all around the property and tall green trees around. The place was clean and suitable. There's a Wi Fi connection which was a plus. It felt like a true retreat from the city except for the service. Will I go back, yes. But first I will ask these questions: Is there snow it the ground? Is it shoveled? Is there firewood? (you have to buy this from them $5 a bundle) Then I'll make the reservation. After check in ask: Are you giving me the right key to my door? read more

Our two units (18 & 19) were a great disappointment this year. Our experience last year was in stark contrast in that our units were inviting and light, exactly the opposite of our recent experience. While the units were advertised to sleep 8, this was highly overrated as 4 of the 'sleeping' spots were dismally uncomfortable pull out queen couches. There was a queen bed in a loft and a king in the lower level. I wish I had taken pictures as the floor plan was stunningly uninviting. When you opened the front door, you faced a couch in a tiny dark room, beyond that was the 'master' with Jack n Jill bathroom serving couch and master. Up the exceedingly narrow stairs was a communal area, cramped living room with couch, kitchen and full bath. Then, yet another narrow staircase leading to loft with queen bed. Adding to the discomfiture was the discovery late in the evening that the plastic bag with linens for one of the couches contained just a blanket, one pillowcase and a pillow, NO sheets. Heating did not extend to lowest floor couch so that area was uncomfortably cold. Sheets and additional blankets requested for second night. One delivered sheet had longitudinal 12 inch rip ... Quality of sheets was very poor...all beds were very wrinkled upon arrival. Units have a fireplace, but no wood is left for guests to use. If you decide to stay at this resort, take a look at the various floor plans...there is at least one that is acceptable, though it was NOT the one we were assigned this year. read more

DON'T EVER STAY HERE!!! For the last five years my family has stayed at Mountain Retreat for a annual golf tournament we hold for my brother. Mountain Retreat has continually made a mess out of our reservations. The only reason we have continued to stay is because if is across the street from the Country Club, so walking back and forth to take care of business for the tournament was easy. This year we experienced the straw that broke the camels back. When we checked in on Friday, my cousin, who was staying two nights and has a 10 day old baby, was told she and her husband were going to need to move their second night. Anyone that has ever had a baby knows the amount of "stuff" a new mother needs to carry with her. Not once did they offer to help. My mother, aunt, and I, who were staying three nights, were told we needed to move our second night. On Saturday morning we woke up to roofers banging on the roof at 7:45 am. After experiencing this first thing in the morning I was done! I walked down to the office to speak with the manager on duty. Unfortunately, anyone who knew anything had taken the weekend off. They left the facilities manager in charge. I let him know that I was not only sick and tired of the way we had been treated, but by no means were any of us moving condos. About an hour later he knocked on our cabin door and said that my cousin didn't need to move, but we still needed to move on Sunday. I quickly told him that we had made our reservations 13 months ago. We requested a certain condo that we were not given, we were promised a price break because of the disaster the year before, had woken up to roofers at 7:45 am - we were not moving. Obviously unaware of how to deal with customers he told me that the people that were suppose to check in on Sunday were kind enough to wait until Monday. This is when I reminded him that it wasn't my problem that they overbooked - I wasn't moving. I will NEVER stay at Mountain Retreat again. They are rude, overbook, and don't have any consideration for their guests or their comfort. In addition to the disaster with our reservations the floors are FILTHY! If you walk around with no shoes your socks or feet will quickly become black from the disgusting dirt on the carpets. DO NOT STAY HERE - YOU WILL REGRET IT!!! read more

Just returned from a visit to Mountain Retreat. My family has been coming here for nearly 30 years. As others have mentioned, it is a bit dated but the customer service, beautiful surroundings and nearby attractions more then make up for this. Check in was quick and easy. We had to call maintenance twice, once because we couldn't figure out how to turn on the TV and another time for a plumbing problem. Both times the maintenance staff arrived within 2-3 minutes and immediately corrected the problem. We enjoyed a free pancake breakfast with hot pancakes, sausages and orange juice on the second morning of our stay. They also have a free ice cream social and bingo games. There is a nice indoor swimming pool and spa. Our unit 24 is located near the back of the resort. The area is very quiet and the chill mornings and evenings remind me of camping in the woods. I enjoyed my cup of coffee sitting on the outdoor deck every morning. The units are very well supplied with ample dishes, glasses and everything needed to cook your own meals. Calaveras Big Trees State Park and Columbia State Park are both nearby. If you like to fish, Lake Alpine is about 30 minutes away. This is a nice, small resort with very friendly staff. We always enjoy our stay here. read more

We have stayed here twice-Once in a big group of 4 children, 4 adults, another with 4 adults 3 children. The first time we were comfortable w/ a loft, living room space, and two bedrooms. The second time was cramped-although it slept the same number, instead of a loft there were two pullout couches in the living room that basically overlapped each other. The kitchen comes stocked. The space is clean and well kept, although out of date. The lodge has a pool table, heated (small) pool, hot tub. The gym has 1 of each functioning: stationary bike, treadmill, elliptical (not all machines are plugged in or working). The gym area seems to be the only one not regularly cleaned, concerning since it probably gets the dirtiest consumers. There are many free weights. All rooms have complete direct TV and high speed Wi-Fi connections. There is a fun movie room, plenty of board games to borrow. We hadn't tried any-but they seem to have fun functions! We used the onsite driving range covered in snow as a high thrill sledding experience :) LOADS of fun! The grounds are so breathtaking beautiful. We will return again :) read more
