This local shop just off Main Street was great! In Breck for Christmas and thought surely I can find some new hiking boots while I'm in town. Not so much. I was surprised to read some reviews stating that the staff at Mountain Outfitters was condescending or not attentive. We have shopped here since 2010 and have experienced exceptional and always patient and friendly service. The sales staff (and the manager, Jeff) are experienced mountaineers, so they know what they are talking about. From Skis to skins, from ski boots to hiking- and trail running shoes - everything we bought here was priced fair (particularly for the advice that comes with it) and the experience is always fun and engaging (stories are being told, hikes and ski runs are shared). Today (8/20.2020) I had - for the first time - experienced a problem with an item purchased: a small tear in my Salewa hiking shoes. Jeff took immediate action and negotiated a pair of new replacement shoes for me. This is why we shop here. You should give them a try. read more

No longer worth the one block uphill trek from Main Street. We've shopped here off and on over the years we've owned in town but we were there today and the selection and prices are now very disappointing and brought to you with a fair amount of rudeness. The struggle between wishing everyone would just leave town so you can conquer your fear and needing their cold hard cash must be real! But, her "I'll just make people wait outside, be rude as heck, and then ask them for their money seems like a very flawed strategy. Take your business elsewhere. I am a telly newbie and so I counted on this store to help me rent the right equipment. They truly took their time and fitted my equipment and made sure my boots were fitting correctly. This store is amazing. Seems they have everything for the total mountaineer. Gear, clothing, accessories...it's a outdoor enthusiasts playground. Though it seemed pretty busy, they were still attentive and caring. They have everything for both winter and summer sports and I plan on coming back to Breckenridge and renting a bike from them this summer. Had a great experience with Mountain Outfitters. I purchased my wife a new jacket and pants at Thanksgiving and they where very informative about what she needed. No pressure to buy anything that was more than she needed, they just suggested what they thought would best fit the needs of her. I also rented/demoed back country gear from them and the selection was fantastic. Gear is in great shape and they have some of the best selection. Staff was very informative as to what I should expect while I was out and even offered some suggestions on where to go. I visit this shop every time I am in Breckenridge and they are always respectful of everyone in the shop. I went in to look for NTN telemark boots, which are a somewhat obscure niche of alpine skiing. When I've looked at other shops in the past, I was lucky if the staff knew what telemark was, let alone stock any tele gear. When I asked about it at Mountain Outfitters, they asked me specifically what I was looking for and narrowed it down the specific type I needed and had it in stock, in my size! The staff and owners are very knowledgeable about the products because they use them, which I feel is very important. They also had a huge selection of Dynafit boots and bindings and all kinds of mountaineering / hiking gear and clothing. This is THE place to go if you are looking for alpine touring gear. read more

I went in to purchase a backpack today. On a previous visit an employee told me he would give me 20% off a summer pack. when told the lady this she questioned me heavily. she then asked another employee if they had been giving that discount, to which the employee said yes. As she was ringing me up I began talking to another employee about kayaking, The lady overheard me and then smirked at my kayaking experience. Although I prefer to buy local and this pack was at a great price I think I am going to return it. I would rather pay more money to a shop that does not condecend it's customers. I was with friends at the store to rent telemark skies. The guy behind the counter, did not really care that we were obiously seeking for assistence. Anyway, we explained that we would like to rent telemark skis and he finally helped us with that. Not very entusatisic...but hey...all we wanted was to rent teli skis. So far so good. Unfortunately I damaged one of the ski on a rock (only base, not near the edges) while skiing. Not too much snow at that day unfortunately. The charged me 50 Bucks for the repair, which I found a steep price. They explained that now that I damaged one ski, they have to service them both since otherwise they would look different in the end. I obviously damaged the equipment and I think it is fair to pay for it. However, from my experience usually renters are more pragmatic when it comes to costs for small repair jobs. Esprecially if the eqipment was not brand new. I did not like the fact that they made me pay for the second undamaged ski as well. I found other very friendly rental places in Breck that rent out brand new NTN Telemark equipment including boots for less money. Thanks god I did not damage those! :-) read more

They do have great gear and a staff that knows what it is talking about. But, there are some serious issues with service. For MO. the business, not the customer, comes first. First, I recently brought in an item that should have been repaired under warranty. I ended up having to pay for the item. After I got the manufacturer involved, MO offered to refund the money. Great, but it took more work that it should have. The item hadn't been purchased at MO, but according to the manufacturer, this should not have made a different since MO is a distributor and should have honored the warranty. Second, they have a terrible return policy and are not always honest or clear about it (despite the little sign at the register). My wife recently went in to by a new pair of ski pants for me. She was told that I could return or exchange them if I did not like them. Turns out, what she wasn't told was that I could not return them for anything but store credit. Now I am stuck with a lot of store credit at a place that does not have what I want or need. Yeah, fine print. But when someone tells you that something can be returned, you expect that it can be returned. This was not the case. There are a lot of places to buy high end gear that offer great service. I suggest trying one of those. read more

Had a great experience with this shop during a girl's weekend. ~8 of us rented snowshoes and the employees/owner (?) we're extremely friendly and down-to-earth with us and others in the shop. Even though some in our group were new to snow-shoeing, the staff wasn't condescending at all (which can happen at sports shops). They got us out the door quickly. $20 for the rental, which isn't cheap, but seem reasonable for Breckenridge in the winter on Saturday. read more

Very disappointed with the store/owner/staff and service. I've purchased climbing and backcountry gear from them over the years and last August 7th (before the big "tent sale") bought a pair of Scarpa Mobe's, on sale but still almost $500. Tried on a bunch of boots and was very specific with the salesperson that I had a tough foot to fit and knew I needed to add custom beds, etc . Not very responsive then but still spent almost an hour and I PRESUMED that as he/they fit and sell boots vs. I just buy a pair every couple of years(decade) that the fitter knew what he was doing. WRONG.... Hit Tellurude for my first skiing of the season two weeks ago and went to the BootDoctor (rated as one of the best fitters in the country) only to be told that the boots I bought in Breck were 2 sizes BIGGER than they should be!!! Big issue as I didn't have any other boots and Telluride was getting some to their first big dumps of the year. Ended up buying NEW boots at full retail but figured Mountain Outfitters would give me a store credit and I needed heaters and some other gear anyway. NO GO - received the run around from 2 separate staff folks (treated like I was an idiot, basically), finally talked to the owner, hem/haw - "we didn't own the store then, don't know who fitted you, not really our problem and we can't find you in the database having purchased that much over the years (sic) *. WOW(and I had the receipt) ... on top of the fact that the staff acted as if they are doing me a favor by even talking to me - that kind of "service" won't get me back, ever... Family started with placer mines in Breck in the 50's and I first started skiing there in 68' (anyone remember the rope tow???) and have never had that kind of service (or lack there of) - especially in a service town where I was willing to pay full retail for other gear, boot was still in stock, etc. So now I have to try and craigslist/consign the boot and deal with that hassle - life goes on though and I feel better already - read more

Terrible experience! I am a local who has purchased thousands of dollars worth of equipment from these guys. I made one poor purchase the other day - a $200 pair of ski pants. I got home and tried them on and they were way too big. I tried to return them/exchange them and I got the ultimate cold shoulder. Their return policy was absolutely set in stone... no returns - not even store credit...even for someone who has been shopping with them for years! The clerk and owner were both very rude and clearly did not value customer service. As a Breckenridge business owner I understand customer service and know how important loyal customers are. I will never be shopping here again and I suggest you find your outdoor gear elsewhere in Breckenridge. read more
