    Pico Mountain - 2/10/25

    Pico Mountain

    (39 reviews)

This place is a masterclass in neglect. The ski infrastructure is severely dilapidated, outdated,…read moreand constantly breaking down. Lifts stop, crawl, or fail outright. The lifties are nice, but they're stuck managing equipment that should've been replaced years ago. Reddit skiers have been saying the same thing for years: "lifts constantly down," "painfully slow," and "not worth the ticket price." Many warn you'll spend more time waiting than skiing. Alta has zero incentive to invest with Killington right up the road doing everything better. Calling this a "ski resort" is generous. If you value your time or money, drive by and keep going.

Met a great friend there after an hours travel. Although the trip to Pico adds another 20 minutes…read moreto my schedule, it was well worth it. Pico is a separate part of Killington Resort with a primarily local clientele and devoid of the road raging attitudes of some of the visitors. It has a genuinely New England vibe from the parking lot all the way to the top of the mountain. The parking lots have plenty of space. The main lodge has a New England functional vibe, a bit rough and that's how people like it. Once on the slopes, the trails tend to be very New England, with narrow trails, plenty of tight tree glades, and one high speed with the rest of the lifts being fixed quads. Sking Pico is a pleasure. It may not have the vertical of Killington, with just under 2,000 at Pico and 3,000 at Killington. But what it lacks in vertical it more than makes up in customer experience. Killington's ethos is "The Beast", loud, boisterous, gargantuan.... Pico is the exact opposite. Quiet, friendly, local, sedate. Ambassadors and Ski Patrol will assist you anywhere. The food at the cafeteria doesn't have a French name but it's wholesome, hearty, tasty. Loooooong ago, there was a move to connect Killington and Pico with cross trails to each. Massive local opposition and ecological issues put a kabash on the idea. As a result, Pico is next to Killington but it's another world in ski experience.

This was a charming and comfortable inn, built and decorated like a classic lodge. The building…read moreitself was fairly new (Steve, the friendly owner, said it was built in 1980), and it had modern amenities including air conditioning that worked very well on the hot summer weekend when we stayed there, but it had the welcoming atmosphere of a rustic country inn, including quaint touches like a cozy nook for relaxing or playing chess, vintage farm implements decorating the walls of the dining area, and the pleasant smell of potpourri in the entryway. Breakfast was included, which had beverages as well as bagels, English muffins, various pastries, granola bars, yogurt, cheese, fruit, and probably other items I'm forgetting. It did not have hot foods such as eggs or breakfast meats, but it was more than enough to be satisfying. The dining area is apparently maintained 24/7 because the beverages and non-perishable foods were also available in the evening after we checked in, so it was refreshing to have hot coffee and a pastry after a long drive. The inn had a swimming pool, whose depth was marked as up to 10 feet, but what was more striking was that the pool and chairs were in a beautifully landscaped area with flowers and a pergola, so it felt more like a country garden than a typical hotel pool. The room was comfortable, the bed and bedding were fine, and it was quiet enough that I heard no noise during the night. My room also had a couch, so it felt a bit like a suite, though I don't know if all rooms have that. By comparing notes with someone in another room, I could extrapolate that each room had a small stuffed bear, which was a thoughtful touch. The room also had a very small balcony with chairs and a table, though I didn't use it because of the hot weather. Overall, I would fully recommend the Greenbrier Inn to anyone staying in the Killington area, especially because it had a comfortable, personal feel rather than that of a chain hotel. It's presumably popular for skiers in winter, but in the summer it was conveniently located for visiting Quechee Gorge; the Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS), a nature center in Quechee, VT; and the Saturday night rodeo at Pond Hill Ranch in Castleton, VT.
