This area has so many beautiful sites and trails! We discovered lots of beauty everywhere we went. There are also easy hikes available for scenic pictures. In the spring and summer, you can find many poppy groves that are breathtaking. There are lots of wild animals as well. We saw a handful of rattlesnakes in the region so be careful with kids!

Just absolutely beautiful. Utah has some of the best outdoor scenery. All of the uinta moutains and Mt timpanigos is a must see if your visiting for Utah. Hike up to the caves, head to timblefork lake, or just around the alpine loop. It's all worth your time.

Here's one of the LOWER elevation campsites near Sundance. Cute, but you don't want to camp here if the rains are heavy.

O.M.G. This place is gorgeous: a blend of Aspen and deciduous woods, it's a place that will be gorgeous any time of year. The pine forest is in fairly good shape, with what appeared to be little pine beetle damage or over-logging. Since this is a wilderness area, you can bivy out and camp in the wilderness areas (there's one up near the summit pass) or you can pay your campsite fee and camp at the primitive sites that come with concrete pits for campfires and concrete pads. IMPORTANT NOTE: The sites listed online are not clearly indicated that they are DOUBLE sites. That means, UNLESS you reserve BOTH sites, you could be camping neck-to-neck with someone you don't know. So book both sites and pay the extra dough. The best by far is the site that's near the trailhead for the Mount Timpanogos trail and parking lot. There's two sites there 4 and 5. 4 is butted up against a thick Aspen site. 5 is better and is SIMPLY one of the most amazing sites I've ever seen. Covered with old enormous pines, it bellies up to the rapids below which during early summer are very swollen and wild. The sound permeates everything, everywhere you go. The bad thing is that it's so loud, a bear will not hear you, so hike/bike with bear bells. The good thing is that when you're trying to sleep, it's heaven. Another note: it gets cold as hell here, especially the higher you go. So even in summer, pack your -0 sleeping bag and polypropylene, though in the day, it can get hot. I would NOT recommend the lower mountain sites, as they became severely flooded while we were at the higher elevation, and campers had to be evacuated. With all the heavy snow pack, lots of rain, those sites flood, as does the road, which, after two nights of camping, we frightfully discovered. So keep an eye on where the park rangers and camp hosts are to get updates on if the roads are still open in case of rain. This is back country at its best. To hike to the Timpanagos Trail, you will cross soggy snowfields and have creek crossings. It's rather rugged, but you CAN hike for a little ways, then always turn back if you're creeped out. Another thing to note: the mosquitoes here (because of all the run-off) are bad. Another notable: it is a LONG, winding drive with no guardrails, so be careful of other drivers and make sure you get enough beer/ice to last you as the drive to Provo is a long one and there's no concessionaires on the mountain to sell either beer or gas. But the views, despite the bear warnings, floods and mosquitoes are worth the long drive. You've got to watch out for bears though we didn't see any.

This trailhead was very unexpected, but quite nice. I've not hiked a lot up this part of the…read morecanyon--my teenage years were spent in the canyon, but we always took the fork to Tibble and rarely did I go up and over the Alpine Loop, or even anywhere along UT 92. Once you pass that aforementioned fork to Tibble, the road does narrow a bit. I drove the loop last fall and it was tense--bumper to bumper cars trying to take in a weekend drive of the foliage and not very enjoyable when the road is really only wide enough for one direction of traffic. The good news is that this trailhead isn't far past the fork at all, so we made on large hairpin, one tight one, and boom, it's there on your right (if you're coming up from the Lehi/Alpine side). It's a generously-sized parking lot, has restrooms, signage, and is a great starting off point. We took the Pine Hollow Trail #47, which is the namesake, obvs. We crossed the road, went up, and took the loop clockwise that goes up to some killer views of the back side of Timp, and then comes back down to Salamander Flat near the road, before cutting back up into the forest, meeting up with Trail #47 again, and retracing the steps back to the trailhead. You can, however, launch off from here, and go all the way up to Mud Flat and pop down at Tibble, if you're after a longer hike and have a shuttle set up. The hikes here are lovely, probably even moreso in Autumn. The very very earliest of leaves were already starting to fade a bit, so get out and make hay while the summer sun shines. Not a massively popular trailhead, but due to its size and convenience, you'll see plenty of folks doing just that. Keep an eye out for bikes and motorcycles on the trail; we saw both.

If you don't have cash, like us, we stopped at the little guard shack at the mouth of AF canyon on our way out and paid. We hiked to the summit August 1 2018. Weather was perfect. We started the trailhead at 5AM and made the summit around 8:30. We hiked quite quickly and large groups or inexperienced hikers would definitely take longer. Average is around 4 1/2 hours to reach the summit. We took 3 liters of water each and it was more than enough. If it had been warmer we may have needed more- but we were back to our car by noon. The hike down took about 2 1/2 hours. We had read that it normally takes a little longer. We also took snacks- which were needed! Snickers bars and peanut m&ms were perfect. The hike wasn't technically difficult so much as just long. It definitely takes endurance. It's not for the faint of heart. I'd recommend being in good physical shape- 7.2 miles each way. The views were breathtaking. Only the last mile from the saddle to the tippy top had some scary heights. If you're afraid of heights, the last mile will be a little nerve wracking. However, it wasn't incredibly dangerous. I'm not a risk taker and I felt pretty safe. It got a little hot on the way down. I wouldn't recommend starting much later than 5am because it can start to get pretty hot as the day goes on and you'll be tired . And the top of the summit can be quite cold in the morning. I had a sweatshirt with me and was grateful for it!

Was very excited to not have to drive super far to get to some local hiking. This area very much reminded me of my hometown. I am only going to review one hike though as that is all i had the chance to enjoy of wasatch mountain state park. If I were in heber again i would love to go and explore this beauty more. Crows nest via huber grove via epperson is the hike we attempted to go on. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/utah/crows-nest-via-huber-grove-to-epperson Its a 5.1 mile loop trail that starts at the parking lot next to the visitor center. It is rated moderate. so there are so many off shoots on this trail. We followed teh all trails map and it led us astray. We eventually found the finale crows nest loop but my teens were done at that point and we just headed back. The loop in all trails map also is longer than what is listed. There are not a lot of signs that say crows nest. We did find our way out easily enough. Trail is dry. Pretty area once you get up into the trees. It is nice that wasatch is not too far out of town so very accessible. If you do not have a utah state parks pass be sure to bring $10 cash or go to the website at teh parking lot and then you can pay for parking online
