Great place to ski, especially with small kids learning. Easy to watch them. We aren't in Colorado, it's great for NY and NJ.

We've been to Mt. Peter before, many moons ago. It's a good place for beginner skiers. Definitely a smaller mountain than some others that are a bit of a longer drive away. It was ideal for our intentions. We brought our kiddo up here to try out skiing for the first time. We got private lessons for all of us but in hindsight, I think it's best to just have your child do the lesson on their own if you don't really require any for yourself, so that the instructor can focus on the child, and the child can focus on themself. There's plenty of space nearby where you can observe while also not being a distraction. We ended up just going up and down the bunny slope while she was having her lesson. That was kind of a waste of money on our part. As for the instruction, I was not too keen on it. Maybe because the instructor was younger and perhaps not used to smaller children. I wish it was an older instructor, maybe someone with their own kids, that could have better helped our kiddo understand what was being asked of her. The instructor kept asking her to move her feet in a certain way that was confusing for her, causing her to have trouble understanding how her feet should move for the "pizza pie" and "French fry" positions - IYKYK I feel like someone more seasoned, that perhaps has their own children, would go about the instruction with a different approach. The instructor brought our daughter up the conveyor belt and down the bunny hill a few times and I could see that our kid did not grasp the fundamentals before doing the hill. I almost wish that I would have just taken her up there on my own but it had been so long that I wasn't confident in myself to take on the task, until after I went down a few times myself, then it felt like second nature. Ultimately, I wanted her first experience to be fun so that she would want to do it again and again. I feel like because the whole experience was hard to grasp and felt like work, when the lesson was over, she was kind of defeated. My kid is courageous, so it's not an issue of being scared. She is just like us, where she enjoys a thrill and will try anything once, even if she's a little bit scared. This was a perfect opportunity to have her experience skiing and hopefully love it but the lesson did not go as planned and afterwards, she just wanted to leave. We talked her into resting a bit. I went up on a green hill by myself, while hubby took her to warm up and have a snack. They have woodfire pizza and the regular cardboard snacks on hand. It looks like they also have other food truck offerings on busier days. The pizza was great. The other food they offer is exactly what you'd expect in a cardboard snack: previously frozen burgers, fries, watered-down soups, chili. Their curly fires were OK, but the chicken noodle soup tasted like not so flavorful water and soft noodles from a used Campbell's can. After our brief snack, she decided she wanted to try the hill again, but wanted to go down the hill with me. I was delayed getting my skis because another visitor must have mistaken my skis for their, and removed them, so I had to go back and get another set. I'm happy there was no issue with that. She did go down the hill again and definitely was done with skiing at that point. Partially the fault of my husband and partially the fault of the conveyor operator. If I could have filmed her, she would have looked like a pro until she reached the bottom. Luckily, she did not get hurt but she did get the crap scared out of her with that downhill ride. She cried, we made sure nothing was broken and then we drove a ways to Mountain Creek for snow tubing, as the tubing hill at Mt. Peter was not in operation during our visit. We'll probably be back, without lessons and only get rentals and lift tickets, and hopefully convince our Little to enjoy the sport in the future. read more

Overall, not too bad. Their staff tries to make the best of it. However, when snow conditions are sub optimal, they tend to provide misleading snow reports. For example, on February 4, 2025, their snow report said "machine groomed, frozen granular... beautiful day to be on the mountain". In reality, 90% was pure ice. After a couple of runs on my snowboard, I realized I could get seriously injured, and it was too dangerous to continue. Wasted time, money, risked injury, and was upset. I complained to the management, but they tried to explain to me how I should hold my edge while skiing on ice - despite the fact that I was referring to the snowboard - much harder to balance on a single edge while riding on ice. Today (March 6, 2025), after a big rainstorm overnight, they say "We are skiing and riding on a machine groomed surface with variable conditions. ... a beautiful day to be outside, on the mountain!" The snow is all melting and mushy, with brownish spots. and I don't see a single person on the webcam (around 11 a.m.) It appears that they don't care about my time, taking 2+ hour drive each way, paying tolls, and risking getting hurt. I took the kids for their second-ever ski trip during the tail end of a snow storm. My navigation app or I ended up getting confused, taking an exit that was far too soon, routing us through a winding, hilly residential area where the roads were snowpacked. Thank goodness for the snow tires! Mount Peter Ski Area was accessible and all the staff we encountered were pleasant, if not outright cool. The kids all took the complimentary half-hour lesson, and the two older ones did all right with me and on their own. The lesson was too rudimentary for my youngest, and he quickly lost interest, deciding to play on a hill of snow, where he entertained himself and befriended other like-minded kids. There were a decent number of food options, although none of them were exactly cheap. The ski area was busy but not overwhelming, which was a nice way to ease the kids back into ski season. read more

Came here to snowboard as an inexperienced boarder. The hills are good for beginners, but there aren't many options for different paths, so it's easy to get bored of the same trails. I found that the equipment was ok, but my board wasn't waxed properly and the boots seemed fairly worn, which caused the riding to be a little rough. This was something I noticed after the fact, once I used good equipment elsewhere. Aren't many food options, just pizza and the classic burgers/fries/soup. I got the cheeseburger, which was decent. Overall, a good spot for beginners but would be ideal if you had your own equipment. read more

We came to Mt Peter on superbowl Sunday and stayed between 12 to 5pm. I don't know if its because of superbowl or the fact it snowed earlier that day but it was never that crowded. Lift lines (3 different lifts that goes to the top of the mountain) were at most 10 min but probably 5 min wait each time. I do recall trying to buy tickets in the past on same day or night prior and finding it sold out, so hopefully they do care about capacity level and limits to ensure its never overcrowded. It was a small mountain and its blue is more a green compare to bigger mountain which was fine for us. From the top to bottom takes about 1.25 minute if you go non-stop. According to their website they also offer free beginner lessons between certain times. This is a very beginner/intermediate friendly place with easy trails and a large open area with bunch of picnic tables where you can rest. They also had two food trucks there. read more

Really great ski spot for a day trip from NYC or NJ! It was only an hour away from my sister's house in NJ. Only two ski lifts with green, blue and black trails. The mountain isn't very high so the way down is pretty quick. Not a lot of folks at the end of February, I was able to have 3 runs within an hour. My kids (age 5, 7 and 12) had a blast snowboarding at Mt. Peter! They were all beginners and my older two sons picked up their snowboarding techniques after spending about 2 hours at the bunny hills and they went on the green trail toward the end of the day. Buying ticket in person was easy and quick. The wait time was less than 5 minutes (maybe because we arrived there early). We had our own equipment, so rental wasn't an issue. If you need to rent equipment from there, it is recommended that you fill out all the waivers and get tickets online. The line for the rental could be long. We arrived at around 10:00 am on a Friday, the bunny hill as well as the place in general was quiet at the beginning but the bunny hill got a bit crowded from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. They offered free beginner group lessons and no reservation was required. There was a staff helping out people, especially beginners, to get on the surface lift to the bunny hill. I saw the lifts to the mountain were not busy at all and there were a few trails with different difficulty for experienced skiers and snowboarders to do. We definitely enjoyed our time spent here. read more

Came here so my cousin could learn to ski. She took a lesson - a group lesson.. Ill advised unless your a child. She didn't have much take away from the lesson. They don't have much in the way of concessions etc. it's a really basic ski area. It's very ill organized, the lines to get a ski pass has no rhyme or reason how they line up. There are no signs for ski school, it's just sort of "wait around in this general area" hopefully you identify the instructor. The women Working the ticketing area weren't helpful, friendly, or even enthused to be there. It was almost as if we had been an inconvenience to them. read more

We came here last weekend, and (perhaps due to the warm weather), it wasn't as crowded as the larger mountains. Pros: - There are ample beginner hills, and free lessons on the bunny-slopes. - If you are an intermediate level skier/snowboarder, looking to boost your confidence in going downhill, then this would be a good place to get your practice runs in. - Good pub on-site with a wide variety of beers. - Hot food available (of the fast-food variety) - Ample seating indoor (including one large greenhouse-type) and outdoor. - The blue and black trails didn't have too many flat areas, so for the most part you can slide your way down with ease. - Snowtubing available if you don't ski/snowboard and are going with a group. Cons: - Not many lockers, and the ones we found were small, enough to hold 2-3 large pair of boots. - Small trails, most can be completed in 1-2 mins top to bottom. - There were only 2 of the 3 black diamond trails open, and one of them was closed for the majority of the day due to race training. - In fact, to call the trail a true "diamond" is a bit of a stretch. (My 7 year old handled it with ease, and she's only at mid-intermediate level). From the top to the bottom of the diamond to the bottom took a little less than a minute, and that was at a leisurely pace. - Even at the "Lift Ticket only" shack, there was only one person manning the booth. Come early, lines get long. Tip: If you are coming with friends or family, look for BOGO or BOGO50% coupons. However, buy the adult tickets on the BOGO separate from the kids to get the best deal. (Staff here can't do math, and will take the discount off the lowest ticket.) TL; DR : Killington and Hunter, this is not, but if you are local and looking to get a few practice runs in, Mount Peter will fulfill the snowsports checklist. read more

I was skiing and some inexperienced woman ran me over. She was with her ski instructor; I was in the woods, yelling for help and the instructor did not even ask if I was ok. The ski lift kept stopping it was so annoying However, we still enjoyed our time overall. We hope that the ski instructors help even those who they aren't providing a lesson to in the future. read more

We came during a holiday so I'm assuming the madness is not typical. We got to the mountain way before it opened and got a spot easily. Then it was all down hill from there. Just the bouncing around from one building to another to get lift tickets, to rentals, to buying a last minute gear. It would have been nice for everything to be in one building. We had our 5 yr old son in the snow basin's 3 hour class. For the first 30 minutes they waited for every student to come. Waste of the 3 hr session. The instructors were young teens. My son unfortunately gave his skis to his teacher because he didn't know what to do with them while they waited. The teacher later gave his skis to another student and my son ended up with way oversized skis. Other places identifies which skis belong to what kid on their bib. The customer service rep tried to make it up to us. But my son'd 1st time skiing experience was negative. Riding on the wrong thing is no fun. Which leads to the whole renting procedure. No one helped him figure out if his ski boots were good for him. We came before the rush of people too. I have no clue how ski boots are supposed to feel and all my son kept saying was too tight till i could a fist between his leg and the front of the boot. I tried to ask for help and the young kid just shrugged his shoulder and said he can keep trying to go a bigger size. Only until i heard a father who apparently ski tell his son what to look for in a ski boot did i get some knowledge to help my son. The place is small but good for beginners only. They have a small section for 2.5-3 yr old to learn to ski. The food line was long and my food was cold when i paid for it. Cold fries and cold hotdogs are gross to me. When we were leaving at 12pm the place was mobbed. The lines to fill out the form was ridiculous and forget about the rental place. Insanity. But maybe because it was a holiday? read more

Two and a half We brought the kids snow tubing. You have to buy online in advance and it's pricier than other places I've gone, but with it because you get to side down more because of the moving belt. If you don't buy tickets online there's a chance they will be sold out morning of. And that was certainly the case the morning we arrived during winter break. They are pretty organized here and ensure safety is adhered to. Everyone is given a safety briefing before tubing and then all rides are coordinated by the folks at the top of the mountain ensuring it's all clear before the next wave goes down. The only downside is there no restroom near the tubing. They had a large portable potty that had no working sink. It was kinda disgusting. And the parking lot is unpaved so it's muddy on warmer days. Plus there's not really any place to change, or eat unless you walk a stretch over to the ski side of the lodge. Overall, it's close to the city and the kids had fun. read more

For a mountain only an hour from the city, my complaints exist with a grain of salt. For convenience, I believe that certain things must be given up. I didn't like this mountain too much, and I definitely think that if you drive an extra hour out, you'll find mountains 300x better than mount Peter. However, due to the proximity of mount Peter to the city, can I really even complain? This mountain is definitely for beginners! There isn't too much variety. For instance, there are many signs for green-level slopes. However, despite what lift you get on, every green sign eventually leads you to THE SAME green mountain. Be ready for a TERRIBLE wait for ski rentals. Never in my life have I ever experienced such an unorganized system! After signing your waivers and filling out paperwork, you wait in line for about an hour to get your ski boots. From there, you drop off your papers, which are then handed over to the skis table where your papers get put in stacks of other papers. You will wait another hour before your name gets yelled and you push through the crowd to get your skis measure. And if you happen to change your ski boot size because you realize they don't fit, they will still give you the skis according to the size you put on your paper. So after all that waiting, you'll get on the slopes and realize that the boot does not fit the ski and return for yet another 30 minutes before you finally return outside. A tip also is that the lockers work "half of the time" or so a warning sign posted on the lockers say. They remind you to proceed with caution and take all responsibility. This means that you probably won't want to use the lockers in case you never get your things back which in turn means that you'll have to make a trip back to your car in your ski boots to put away your normal shoes and belongings. After the wait, skiing is quite fun! Very standard ski lifts and a small amount of hills that will keep you occupied for the remainder of your time. Again, keep in mind this place is for beginners so if you're a pro, mount Peter won't be that thrilling. The food here is also pretty typical ski lodge food. You got your burgers, your curly fries, your hot dogs, and the like. The chili actually is amazing if you're wondering what to order! And when you get the chili dog, it's even better. Overall, it's a fun easy mountain to spend the day and a quick ride from the city. However, if you're willing to drive a little further don't even consider coming here because there are SO MANY BETTER OPTIONS. read more

Based on today's snow tubing experience, it was a wonderful one!! We attended the 3-5pm, 2 hrs session. Tickets all sold out. At first glance, it seemed like a lot of people, and I thought my family would only able to do a few rounds but the line do moved with a good flow, and if you keep moving, you could probably able to do a dozen times. That's quite enough for some afternoon fun. Staffs are polite in general. There's a little tubes carousel for the little ones. Really cute and fun. Very thoughtful to include the whole familly with tiny kids. I should mention that they also have a shorter slope for the little oneS. Very thoughtful. Overall, my daughter rated 10 out of 10, and reat of the family agrees!;) read more

I have been going here for several years and it is awesome. It is a small mountain so it does get busy on weekends & holidays so plan accordingly. The food is great & not way overpriced. If you want worthwhile instruction book a private a lesson. Last time I went someone mistakenly took my skis (later returned) while getting rentals for my son. They set me up with free rentals so I could ski while they would look around for them. This is their 85th season, hope they go way past 100! read more

Great small mountain ski area for beginners and intermediates to learn and hone their skills. We have been here a few times and it's a very manageable place to bring the family. Apparently, most of the others had coupons or vouchers that were 2 for 1, so that would definitely make skiing a bit more affordable. They do have a "free" group lesson that teaches the basics and available with the purchase of a lift ticket. Just understand that this is very basic and probably not enough to get you on the lift and down the slopes. We opted for a private for one of the kids, which was well worth the price. It took one of my nieces (who had taken a few beginner lessons at another mountain) from her previous tears, to skiing down the green slope backwards on her last run! Just remember that the instructor doesn't really make a lot of that money and they appreciate tips! The indoor seating area is a bit of a mess. On the weekends, it is a place for skiing clubs and parents hanging out at the open tables. Usually everyone is friendly and will allow you to sit and eat or hang out if the table isn't occupied. Our last visit one woman was quite rude, although she was the only one at her table. Rental boots are mediocre at best...better to own or rent elsewhere if you can. Skis are decent. You have to pay extra for a helmet. Overall, a good experience on a relatively stressful day. read more

Beware they do not give you refund back for any reason and don't mention to you at all that it's non-refundable which is ridiculous they can take your money but can't mention it's non-refundable!!! Brought 2 tickets for 2 days ended up only going for the first day because my 2 year old daughter was scared and wouldn't/couldn't do anything there so there was no purpose going back with her and we are not from New York just to drop her off at family we are from New Orleans but and we do plan on visiting New York again soon but for sure won't be returning back to this place that steals money!! read more

Went snow tubing here today. Easy to get to from nyc, parking was super easy you just pull right up to the snow tubing area. The staff was incredibly friendly, energetic, and fun! I was worried my 6 year old would be scared but after the first run down she was going on the magic carpet and down the mountain all alone! My daughter (12 y o) took a private lesson with the older tiny woman, who mostly lectured her about general things of skiing and they went 3 times up the bunny hill. On the end of the lesson (ended a couple min earlier) she didn't know how to stop or turn. Sad $120 spent for nothing. read more

I can Only say very happy memories from This mount Perter Ski Area! I skied From 1979 threw 1983. My older sister Patti and Joe my brother all learned with me to ski. It was a Christmas in Jan and Feb Gift from our parents Saved my babysitting money and bought my first new Set of Boots Poles Bindgings. Those fun times got us threw those cold winters knowing we would be with our town and school friends. The hot choalate was so thick with foam and our fries ever so hot. My favorite part was if We were lucky enough we would get a spot to warm our feet on the metal covered open fire (After boots were removed though! ) nearly in center of Room. You could say is/ was a family bonding place though my Parents never skied but encouraged our sports to no end. My parent's felt we would be better students of we were active and played team sports. Though My Brother and older sister have passed I remember our group as siblings to be some our fondest of childhood. We always said Going out the door of our house yeh be good I am watching you! Fun for singles, family and children from what I remember. Hopefully Pro shop is not up those two set of stairs...That was a climb, So there was one trail / Slop rated as :Black diamond Expert "toughest ...Who knows what is available. Good Vibe for friends and family. While in Military in Europe skied in Germany but hands down Mount Peter has that home (Heart )town feel on not being over whelmed. Not super long run but enough to feel experience and reasonable distance form NYC and New Jersey towns. A good place for beginners to start learning snowboarding :) Total of 14 trails which are divided into 3 categories: easy, more difficult, and most difficult. For beginners, it's better to start off at easy trails. Take the OL' PETE (cable car) to the top. Practice a few times until you get the feeling of turning left & right, and stopping. The trails are pretty short and easy. Don't worry about falling on your butt or knee. NO PAIN NO GAIN. Once familiar, beginners can try the more difficult trials such as Cedar Lane. The trails get more steep and you slide faster. read more

The tubing section of this mountain is maintaining strict COVID policies by limiting the number of people who are allowed up the stairs. Every one is required to wear a mask and social distancing is strictly enforced. But they still are having fun and making the time spent at the mountain fun and exciting for all. Although they have cut the sessions down by a half hour we still got our money's worth. We will definitely be back for more. read more

Great learning to ski area for kids. Ppl are helpful and nice from the parking lot, rentals, cashier, and other customers. Paid for private lessons and the instructors are younger high schoolers, cordial and super sweet to my kids. Bathrooms are a bit tight but clean. Lodge is not super packed - I think many folks head back to their cars. Ppl wear masks in the lodge except when they're eating. They give free lessons but it's really for true beginners as in never gone skiing at all. Not a lot of great food options so bring your own. read more

Paid for ski lessons. They never separated by age like they said they would. Adults were in same training with young kids who needed lot of directions. Every time I asked the instructor a question (best way to get yourself up) he would say "we haven't gotten to that yet." So he had us practicing small foot movements on our own a lot and I suddenly I look up & he was waving good bye & saying we were good to go. I paid for a 1 hour lesson, it was supposed to start at 11:00- but it started at 11:15- after trainer was done talking & waiting for late arrivees, he was done by 11:45. I attempted to go down small hill 2x & quit bc I really just did not feel equipped & my biggest issue is getting up once I fall. I only gave 2 stars bc we were able to ski freely after lessons ended. But that lesson was not worth the money. read more
