It is a tragic accident waiting to happen! Too many tickets are sold leading to over crowding. Inexperienced and in attentive lift operators are one tragic accident away from someone being seriously injured or worse. I watched someone not make it off the lift on a weekend. The lift was moving way too fast for the number of people at the top of the mountain. The lift hit the person in the back and knocked them down. They were clearly hurt and had to be brought down by ski patrol. The lift operator never stopped it the lift. He didn't noticed it knocked a skier down. This is beyond negligent and dangerous. Stay away! read more

A good mountain to learn how to ski or snowboard, practice and get out of your rusty phase. Especially after injuries lol! I hit the slopes today and during the day it was a bit busy but come sundown it cleared up. There are a few operational downfalls here, if i had to complain i would say the snow wasn't fresh enough and the bottom of the trails need more leveling and less ice. The lifts are a bit old but they do the job, would be nice if there were more speakers around for some music. The cafeteria is a bit of a hot mess, the food and snacks are good enough to get you by, the seating design needs improvement. There's a rental shop and a new items shop upstairs, i rented my skis boots and poles for $60 which was good enough. the boots were very difficult to put in and get off but they were durable. read more

Chronically mid but still fun. The lifts feel like sitting on a lunch tray, and whoever decided to put foot rests on the quad deserves to be hung by their toenails and slapped on the belly. The resort stretches far back but each run is either meandering and flat or straight vertical. Black runs are over before you even realize you're on the trail. The most distracting part is the amount of debris that lays just off each trail. Like they said "just throw all our old trash where people can't see it from the road." The mini park is fun but too mini and the big park feels too claustrophobic to get solid lines. The rails desperately need a facelift, I could feel the tetanus on my board after each grind In spite of all this I can't even hate: the 50$ lift ticket is a rarity in this hellscape of 150$+ day tickets and the amenities are serviceable. With a little upkeep and some retooling this place could be a true gem but for now it feels like a reasonably priced scrap yard read more

I'm a pretty advanced snowboarder, but don't have my own snowboard. I went on a wednesday (non holiday) and they charged me $115 for a lift ticket and rental 6pm - 9pm. I had a good time, but the mountain isn't big so why charge people so much especially for a week night. it should be 70 for rental and lift for a week night. read more

excellent snow and amazing instructors. The best local mountain around!!! Highly recommend

I came here on a Sunday to ski with my daughter. People here are generally pretty friendly. They are also very helpful the morning started off with nearly all ski lifts open but then they had a problem on one of them, and had to shut it down, it made for a very long lines on only one ski lift that went Part of the way to the top. They don't rent helmets here so please be sure to bring your own. This is a lovely place to learn how to ski as well as practice up on your skiing if you haven't been in a while. Unlike other places where people are either sitting or skiing wildly in front of you, this place is not like that. The dining hall is not a self-serve sort of dining hall. You have to scan a QR code and if for some reason you do not have cell service, they can come out to you and input your food request. They will bring food to you at your table. That's a nice feature to have. read more

Came to Thunder Ridge on a Sunday early afternoon. From what I read on google and other review sites, they don't limit capacity and you will not find the lift ticket sell out since it seems like they just sell as much as they can. Their parking lot is a large unpaved muddy dirt fields, on a wet day that's going to be gross trekking all that mud into your car, fortunately for us, it was dry that day. We saw 3 carpet lift available that day, one for their ski school and other 2 for all other guests and also 3 chair lifts. They have a small learning area for first timer but also a larger beginner area on the opposite side of the main lodge that is accessible with both a chair lift and a carpet, we stayed there most of the day and the wait time for the chair lift/carpet were pretty short at about 5-8 min each time. Despite the crowd at the other two main lifts, the beginner area weren't too bad for us that day and we had a pleasant time. We bought the half day ticket which as $63 per adult vs full day at $69 for weekend. I don't know how long the wait time for the other 2 main chair lift would be, maybe 30 min to 40 min but I am guessing. For us their beginner area was large and long enough accessible via 1 chair lift and a carpet. But if you are looking for a much longer trail, you will need to access the other two chair lift which wait time seemed long. read more

If you are looking for a small, relatively cheap day of snowboarding or skiing this mountains good. There's not a lot of trails and the food isn't the best but it's still really nice imo but some of the employees have an attitude. Get your pass online before coming because I made the mistake of not doing that and I was given like the hardest time ever by the lady at the outside booth. BUT I still think this is a good place to go with friends or family especially if you are a local / live near by. read more

5 stars for being a spectacular resort for what it is. Full disclosure: I have worked a few seasons as ski patrol on the weekends and a local ski hill in Nevada. This resort is great for kids and beginners They have a few magic carpets and a very friendly ski school. They are snowboard friendly for little kids learning to ride. My daughter is 6 and her instructor Ryan was amazing her first day snowboarding. He made it really fun for her and she can't wait to go again. I got to take a few runs on a new board myself and was very impressed with their snowmaking. It should have been icy but instead it was machine groomed with about 6 inches of freshly blown powder over the top! Also...really inexpensive, close by and clean bathrooms. Lodge and lounge were clean with fast service and good food. It's a small local resort, and this is as good as they get. Parking right at the base of the hill, no walking, no lines. read more

Had a great time here considering this is a small mountain. I also think I enjoyed the time here more because I had an idea of what we were walking into beforehand. We went on a weekday morning and it was very empty which was great. There was zero wait to go up the lifts and use the mountain. Since we got there early, the trails also didn't start getting a little crowded until around 2p. I can definitely see though how it would be hard to ski on such a small mountain when there are so many people here. Knowing it's a small mountain we knew the runs would be relatively short and we would get to try all of them. What I disliked about this place was their "COVID" protocols. Because of COVID you can't put your things on in the lodge and you can't rent out lockers. You also can't rent helmets because of COVID. However- not a single person inside the entire day (employees included) wore a mask inside. Changing your policies and the way you work things is fine, but it was disappointing to see COVID as the reason considering workers did not wear masks. read more

This is a great, not mountain per se, but ski area, for beginners and families. It is no frills, but the lodge is very nice, and the people are very nice. They have wonderful Mid week specials, and I have yet to hit a lift line. And while still expensive for what food you get, they don't gouge you on food as badly as most lodges do. Also, it is very close. If you live in Westchester figure an 45 minute to hour drive. I have it 3 stars because the mountain really is a ridge line. Plus I have yet to see the summit chair operating, and have been there twice. Of course the triple goes almost as high. Plus they could have blown their trails a little more to have a little more terrain for intermediate skiers. And while they have "black diamond" trails there is really no advanced terrain, but like I said good place to take the kids to learn. read more

Check in process takes way to long for this ski mountain that wants to ha e everything done o line. Then when you get here it's a 40 wait for computer check in then rentals. Also the way the food is now upstairs is a waste of time. Why can't we get our own food?? And the food prices are absolutely crazy.. no need to charge that much for anything that you are serving here. Its all cold anyways...Covid is way over. Go back to normal read more

Adorable small ski mountain with food options. It's the perfect place for skiing with kids, it's not overwhelming. Definitely shoot for mid week skiing to avoid the crowds from NYC. It's very hometown feeling and friendly. Don't expect the perks of the large mountains-they are here for skiing and food. Very friendly and helpful staff. Love this place! read more

Thunder Ridge is a good family ski mountain -- which, ok, is sort of a euphemistic way of saying, Thunder Ridge is a glorified hill. Trail ratings are good for boosting your self confidence. Blues would be greens a bit further north; most diamonds would be blues at best. (The exceptions: (1) a short stretch of Timber Wolf off of the doubles lift, which is tough primarily because it's narrow and steep, and less groomed; and (2) Fool's Delight off of the triples lift.) Trails on the lower half of the mountain are really, really short. The real challenge for beginners is how narrow many trails are, particularly near the bottom. I always half expect a collision with all the kids hurtling into merging trails, with parents 30 feet behind yelling, "PIZZA WEDGE, FRANKIE!!!! PIZZA WEDGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Pricing in the store is pretty reasonable, great for all those times we've forgotten to pack mittens, packed just one mitten, or lost a mitten on the slope. Cafe pricing is more or less fair by ski mountain standards. You have your standard grill line offerings (burgers, hot dogs, chicken nuggets, spicy curly fries), pizza, soft pretzels, chili (it seems homemade, unlike the very processed "ski mountain chili" my kids know and love, and is unfortunately too spicy for their palates). Salads are sad little dried-out, overpriced things designed to make people pity vegetarians. In years prior, they had baked goods from Brewster Bakery, which is a fabulous bakery. Not sure if they have those still. Weekend crowd is a mix of mostly locals with kids on a racing team and a sprinkling of New Yorkers savvy enough to avoid the hellhole known as Hunter on weekends. Folks who work at Thunder Ridge have been pleasant in our experience, though those nice high school kids operating the ski lift tend not to know anything about trails (what's open or closed, which have moguls or snowmaking ) and often forget to slow down the lift for little kids, which whacks their legs out from under them. It's all good, though. Repeated back-of-the-knee whacks probably strengthens those muscles and builds character. read more

Me and a friend had our first time Skiing here and we had an overall pleasant time. There are plenty of slopes here that are good for beginners and they offer some really usefully lessons. The price for skiing here is reasonable and they offer both beginner slopes and bunny slopes for newbies. The trainers here will helpful and understanding. A lot of kids come here for their first times as well and the staff are use to dealing with them. The cafe here leaves a lot to be desired especially with the high price for food here. I would suggest for people to just drive 10 minutes to place to eat outside instead. The biggest complain I might have for this ski area (and for a lot of ski areas from what I understand) is that its hit or miss regarding the snow quality. After a snow storm the place has nice fluffy snow to ski around with but during a dry spell its a lot of ice that is harder to ski through... too bad we didn't go the day after it snowed! Overall this is an OK ski area that caters to both locals and nyc people. read more

Gear rental process took 90 minutes. Horribly organized. Caused us to miss our group lesson reservation. When we spoke to the manager about it, he refused to acknowledge any wrongdoing on their part, claimed that we had been informed to arrive an hour early (which wasn't true, and wouldn't have solved the problem anyway), and refused to give us a simple $15 free upgrade. read more

Better to drive the extra 40 min or so to a bigger mountain. The $60 lift ticket provides access to just 2 lifts. 1 of those lifts is for a single, tiny bunny hill. The 1 real lift brought us half way up the mountain to 1 green and 1 blue. That's all. Even for a beginner or intermediate, riding the same 2 hills for hours is not worth $60. Also, you can ride down each of those in 1-2 minutes. This gets very boring. For such a small mountain with limited number of trails the lift ticket should be discounted. It was also quite slushy. read more

I'd give this place 3.5 stars. Overall I was very satisfied with my trip there. I went on a midweek Wednesday. It was me and my 6 year old daughter, 8 year old nephew, and my older brother. We had beautiful sunny skies, a mild day, and nice freshly groomed snow (maybe 1" natural and some fresh snowmaking it seemed). So, the crowds were not bad at all. Bottom line is my daughter and nephew had a blast, and that is what this day was about. I would not recommend it for upper level skiers looking for more of a thrill. It would get boring very quickly. Location: it really is close to NYC, Westchester, Fairfield Counties. This is the best feature. I slept a normal night, had a cup of coffee and breakfast at home, and was there for lift opening at 10am. I left at 3pm, stopped for a nice late lunch on the way home, and was home to Fairfield County before dark. Mountain: it is small for sure. But it is in a pretty area of "upstate" NY. The slopes are pretty basic. There were a few sharp downhill blacks, but literally you are at the bottom instantly if you go down one. We did a lot of the greens, and they were fun runs for the little guys. The best run was the one cut into the trees, a blue, called Evergreen. Short - but the only run that really felt like something out of Vermont. Lifts/ops: the magic carpet was frozen when we got there. This was a tough way to start. My girl is still kind of a beginner and my nephew was really on his first run. This made it hard, but they got it going maybe 20 minutes after time (and our impatience led us up a hill my nephew wasn't ready for (and led my nephew to a hard faceplant)). There is a pretty quick triple that seems like a new lift. It goes about 2/3 of the way up the mountain. The staff: a few nice people, but overall just not very friendly. A lot of people who seemed like they hated their jobs or people or both. It could use some work. I guess this place will be popular based on location, but just simply teaching your staff to smile and try to help people would go a long way. No one was terrible, just a generally gruff/rude group of people. Lodge: nice, simple, good view of the mountain, food was definitely fine considering. Anything I'm forgetting? My advice is come here if you have low demand or beginner/kid skiers, and probably come on a weekday. Don't expect anything to keep the interest of a high level skier/rider for more than an hour or two. read more

My group and I were looking for a place to ski, preferably somewhere close to the city. We happened to hear about Thunder Ridge through the MTA getaway package deals. It offered both the lift and transport to and from Thunder Ridge and Grand Central for ONLY $57! We thought it was a steal, so we bought the tickets! Honestly after reading the reviews before going, I had prepared myself mentally that it probably wasn't going to be quality of a time. But man I think some of the reviews were too harsh... Having been to a few places in the Poconos, this place is pretty good for the price! I would say that yea it probably isn't the BEST, but it definitely is better than what was reviewed about this place. As soon as we got there, the van was waiting to take us to the slopes (4 min away). The driver was so nice and she gave us a brief intro of the slope and the area around. When we got there, we then proceeded to get our rentals. We got that settled and headed for the slopes! The little cafeteria offered budget food that was decent. Then on the way back,....we missed our train(our fault), and the guy was so nice to drive us to a restaurant to wait for the next train, as he'll pick us up then. In conclusion: budget-friendly, practical, beginner/intermediate-friendly slopes, small and nice place to have a good time,....as long as your check your attitude (as with everything in life) :) read more

Just called thunder Ridge to discuss the available options for my family of 6. We have kids ranging from 12-5 and have veneer skied before. After reviewing the website for lessons, rentals and lift tickets it appeared I was looking at over $800 for a half day of skiing. Ok. Its a lot but better than Xbox!! I decided to call just to see if I was missing anything and also ask if there were any better options for a family in our situation. The woman simply said, "Yep, sounds about right." No information on the lessons or anything else. She could not get me off the phone fast enough. I grew up going to Big Birch and was really excited to being my kids there. Let me be clear, its not the $800, I just wanted the information before spending it. I too am a business owner and understand that you must charge for your services. I also understand custom service. read more

Happy New Years Eve! My DH and I wanted to start our new year with an activity instead of a big meal and champagne and celebrate major weight losses (we've each lost an Olson twin) by doing something we wouldn't have been able to do 5 months ago. Ski! I had skied once when I was 13 and remember it as fun and challenging. DH snowboarded and had a class in college....keep in mind I'm now 46and my DH is 36. Thunder Ridge had a deal: lift ticket, 1.15 hr lesson and skis, boots and helmet rental. Keep in mind this was also a holiday so the cost was $240. Due to rain the day prior we were worried that it would be closed for our long awaited ski day, but the website kept the conditions up to date and we were excited with late night snow machines made sure they would be open 10-5. The snow was like icy, slushy snow...which I understand is not the best to learn on as it can make even a modest hill pretty fast. I found it very easy to check in on my lesson - which you can make online. Once there everything is pretty much on the lower main floor. Lockers, restrooms and rentals. Once we signed off our waivers and got a key for the lockers ($20 and when you return the key you get $10 back) or you can take your chances and leave bags of your stuff out on bakers racks Near the lockers. Once we had slipped on our snow pants and put our shoes in the locker we headed to pick up the rentals. Rental booths are Set up in a row and everyone, from the teens running the helmets and boot rental to the adults running the pole and ski rentals..they all seemed to know what they were doing finding the correct fits and making us happy and comfortable. We headed out to the designated "ski school" area and put on our skis and puttered around waiting for our lesson to start. we had went online and investigated beginner info: putting on ski equipment, how to fall and get up, how to turn etc. so we kinda had a head start. When others showed up and the lesson started we felt pretty comfortable. The ski school teacher had been skiing 12 years and had been on a ski team before an injury and 14 years old, he also had a "shadow" that was an assistant. I Don't remember the young guys name, but he was great! He was patient, knowledgeable and rewarded newbies with praise when we deserved it..shout out! (If the age of the teacher bothers you know There were older teachers there and they were clearly teaching some of the teachers how to teach a group.) The school has an area safely away from the other hills and was challenging enough for a newcomer and even has a "magic carpet" that with guidance you ski onto and you take up the training slope. The lessons held there are for both disciplines- skiing and snowboarding. The groups are broken down into more manageable groups and assigned a teacher. But beware, it's for training and there will be kids and adults and you have to wait to ride the carpet back up...there are private lessons available..so don't complain people..your learning and you can learn a lot waiting and observing. After our lesson...which ran more like 1.30-1.45 - not complaining. The teacher told us we were more than welcome to stay on the slope. With more students and us with our new confidence, we decided to head to green hills. The first green hills have a lift that's for training people on how to utilize a ski lift. It runs a little slower and the people running the lift are looking out for you. They helped me on and as I attempted to get off I fell and whipped my noggin pretty hard. They quickly shut down the lift and helped me up. Embarrassing, but assuredly not the first person to do so. As stated earlier, the snow was mainly manmade and was more icy fast. I fell like 3x and once again a nice Worker stopped to talk to me and encourage me. I was whooped, but went back up one more time to not let it get the best of me. Made it down with falling only 2x...hey it's progress. My DH was doing great and only fell once. After we went backup to the lodge to rest and use the restrooms. Restrooms were clean, although the toilets were really low and needed the bars to help pull you up. We didn't eat there, but noticed lots of bar type food. The ski shop had aspirin and Ibuprofen..good to know. Overall we stayed about 4.5 hours and found it to be fun and would definitely recommend Thunder Ridge to people just getting started to intermediate levels. In fact, we are looking into buying equipment and making it a new winter hobby! Thanks Thunder Ridge for making our experience today challenging and fun and hiring happy, helpful, knowledgeable people at all age levels. read more

Typically a decent place to ski during the week but they are poorly prepared on holidays, no-school days, etc. I waited for 2 hours for rentals despite the website encouraging people to buy lift tickets and rentals ahead of time to reduce the time waiting in line. There is no designated "express lane" for pre-registered customers, which could very likely reduce frustration and make the experience more valuable for customers. Maybe this day is just an outlier but it definitely deterred me from wanting to come back. I could just as easily drive up to Mohawk and be on the slopes 2 hours earlier read more

I took two small kids, first time snowboarders to Thunder Ridge over the MLK holiday. On the plus side: the snow was great, all the staff was friendly, helpful and good natured in spite of the mobs. The kids enjoyed their half-day lesson and I did some nice, easy skiing on their nicely groomed trails. It was an easy hour and 20 mins from our home in Brooklyn, up the Jackie Robinson to the Hutch, to 684 to 22. On the cons, it was extremely crowded, and with the small scale of the facilities, it quickly became difficult to do anything. The cafeteria was packed, there were no tables inside or out to eat lunch on. The rentals area was particularly insane as it is probably designed to accomodate about a tenth the number of people who were there. The kids enjoyed their lesson, but I don't feel they really learned very much, plus there was a lunch break at 11 am, which I thought was unnecessary, but with the crowd in the cafeteria, it was probably for the best. The three lifts were quickly overwhelmed by the crowd and it took more than an hour to get up a mountain by the time we left at 2:30pm. I would recommend this place for a nice day out with the kids, but maybe not on a holiday weekend, or if you do come, bring your own gear, food, and maybe even some folding chairs, so you can have a place to sit. read more

This is a great local ski mountain, particularly for little ones learning to ski. The magic carpet and bunny hill is right next to the lodge so parents can watch from indoors. The prices are very reasonable. We have had a great experience with all of the instructors here who have been very patient and good with our small kids. One thing I recommend is for people to rent equipment before coming up here-- the rental department appears to get overwhelmed and the lines are long. The guys who work in the rental department are super and very helpful however. Kudos for Danny in particular for helping me out!! read more

For being only an hour away from NYC this is a pretty great spot for those learning to ski. The one-star review is for the way they operate their equipment rentals. If you have your own skis and boots, great, you'll manage the crowds just fine and this will be a three-star experience for you. Carry on. But if you have to rent, expect to line up again, and again, and again, and again in their archaic process that seems to be staffed by all of five people. On a regular weekend it was about a 30 minute wait. On a recent holiday weekend it was probably close to two hours -- I don't really know, because after an hour I had missed my lesson time and gave up only halfway through the line. There is really no excuse for those kinds of lines at a place that should be wanting your business. Very disappointing. read more

I wish there's option for half star for this place, so disorganized and disoriented. They seemed to overbook and hire inexperienced staff to teach classes, most kids are just sitting around, not getting time to practice skills that they are being taught verbally. I agree with most reviewers that the mountain is pretty small with not that many runs and lacks luxuries. It is a local ski area, not a vacation destination. What I am surprised at is that few people have written about is that there are no changing rooms! You have to change in the bathroom, or come in your ski clothes. That was the worst point for me. After I managed to get changed, I found the place had some good points, especially the lodge. Even on a weekend, the lodge wasn't crazy crowded, and the food is surprisingly not insanely priced for a ski lodge, maybe even just about normal to someone from NYC. The front desk and rental are on a pretty small scale, so lines were not immense. The scene was mostly families with young children and local kids. This is a reasonable choice for people/children who are just learning or people who want to practice on a few green to easy blue level runs after have just had a few lessons at a relatively lower cost than at the bigger resorts. The MTA package is a pretty good deal. The shuttle from the station to the lodge was also a positive. It ran often and was a quick ride. read more

Great no-frills spot to learn to ski not far from NYC. I've never skied before, but wanted to take lessons a few times leading up to a Vermont trip with friends on President's Day weekend. Easy to get to Thunder Ridge on Metro North, which I wanted to do to keep things as cheap as possible. Did a group lesson my first day, the instructor John was great at teaching a large group of beginners. Gave me enough of a base to hit the small bunny slope and then the greens. I came back a week later for a private lesson, and the girl who taught me, Katrina, was great. She listened to exactly what I wanted to work on and we did just that. I feel like I really progressed after that private lesson. The ski area is small so it's easy/quick for a beginner to get around. Employees are friendly. This isn't a mega mountain, but a nice small-town feel place to get some runs in. I'll be back whenever I need a quick day trip to scratch the ski itch. read more

Would not recommend this place for beginners or for people who've never been here. Right from the start, they were very rude. My girlfriend and I bought snowboard rentals, and the woman at the desk was extremely rude. She was upset that we didn't have the right papers and was snapping at my girlfriend. I understand if people aren't doing the right thing, but if you are going to work in a customer service area, you should have enough patience to deal with people so they will want to come back. And we were given no guidance on where to go to even pick up our rentals. Just not a good environment for new people, and because of that, I will never go again. Thanks read more

Decided to head up to Thunder Ridge last winter because of the article in the New York Times. The MTA organized ski train ticket was definitely convenient, making it possible to purchase lift tickets and roundtrip train tickets at Grand Central. The resort itself, however, was very lacking, but what do you expect when you're skiing only an hour away from New York... I've been too spoiled with Lake Tahoe and Chamonix, so for my standards for skiing are just way too high. Despite being in January, snow was already melting leaving huge patches of grass all over the place - quite sketchy. The runs were too short, and not very difficult, while the lift lines were long. Probably won't be going back for a while and may just hike up to Hunter or Windham, which aren't too much farther. read more

We went here for my sons 16th birthday with about six of his friends we went late afternoon on a saturday beucase it was better to do twilight skiing on the weekend as lift tickets are pricey on weekends for the full day its a small resort but worth it when you don't want to trek over two hours to a large resort this one is on the smaller side but it allows you to get your fix of skiing or snowboarding has an area where you can warm up and grab a bite to eat also and there are a few restaurants nearby if you don't want to sit and eat at the place wasn't too crowded for a Saturday only real issue i had was at the rental of boots, helmet and snowboard lockers were $20 for rental so basically everyone was putting their bags and boots under the benches and they had some shelving there in the event you wanted to leave your stuff there.. we didn't have anything stolen but then again we didn't leave anything valuable in our bags once we left them under the bench. the kids had a good time and we will definitely be back to try the paintball that was down the road from the ski area read more

As a beginner, Thunder Ridge is a great place to learn. Though I can't speak on behalf of the rental lines and what have you since I rented seasonally elsewhere, I can say that the staff is made up of some wonderful people. Seasoned ski instructors help you understand the sport and how to move your body to better your turns. There are plenty of trails for the small area, and some get very wide!
