It's the DMV so getting 2 stars means they did a pretty good job vs the expectations. I love the Covid appointment system but also hate it at the same time. I had to travel an hour from Milford because this was the only place with an availability that was before my license expired...if I chose Bridgeport which was my closest DMV I would have had to wait until November! Ridiculous. The only positive to the appointment system is that it limits the amount of people at the DMV at once. Instead of waiting in a Disney size line, you only have to wait in a Six Flags sized line. Once your number is called, the process in CT is strange. You have to go to your assigned window/booth and give them all your info and pay for the processing of your application for license transfer (out of state). Then you have to sit and wait and then they eventually call you up for the eye test. Once your done with that you have to sit again and wait to receive your license and then pay for the license itself. Felt like one big game of musical chairs as 10 other people were doing it simultaneously with me. I think the DMV plans it's processes by throwing a bowl of spaghetti at a board and seeing which ones stick...however the ones that stick are so curly & curvy it doesn't make sense at al. The one positive about this DMV is that all the employees were very pleasant. Not gonna lie, whenever I walk into a DMV it feels like I'm walking on egg shells hoping the agent I get is having a good day. Luckily here, egg shells are avoided and it's more like walking on plywood than egg shells. One more qualm I have against the place is the security guards...they are badge happy and act like they are guarding the White House and not the Wethersfield DMV. The Overall experience was better than most DMVs despite my negatives above which means most DMVs that I've experienced have been absolutely horrendous.

We have pretty crazy standards for what passes as customer service. Over recent months I have spent a number of hours, on different days basically waiting. I was there on Saturday each time, it makes sense that it would be busy. That said, the DMV should consider this a "HOT ZONE" and schedule accordingly. Even if that means hiring some part time help. It typically took me around 30 minutes to reach the information counter where I was provided a number. The counter folks were usually helpful, to their credit. Unfortunately, once I received that number, the next wait could be a couple hours. (Seriously). The good news is that when your number is announced, you will most likely be greeted by a very nice, tired, but helpful person. I observed people working through breaks, and going beyond what one would expect of a DMV employee. The staff is pretty good at the Wethersfield DMV. There are some things you can only get done here so you need to come to this location. If you want to see what you can accomplish at this and other DMV locations, go online. You could save yourself time. I notice that some sites are setting learner permit appointments online now... GREAT IDEA! It is not healthy for the DMV staff to work in these conditions. I observed the general public randomly venting their aggravation on the first soft target they encountered. It unreasonable to expect the public to give up so much personal time simply to remain in compliance with our DMV regulations. It is even less reasonable to task DMV employees with having to deal with the perpetually annoyed public. We are paying LOTS of money to register and inspect vehicles. We are paying LOTS of money to keep our driver's licenses up to date. I am certain one reason people drive unregistered, uninspected cars and without proper licenses is because it is so difficult to manage the process. (The Public) are customers. (The DMV) Provide a service. The leadership of the DMV needs to figure out how to provide a customer experience at least as good as the worst retailer. Right now this is a toxic situation for both the public and the consumer population. Special Note Ms. Currey, Commissioner Currey of the DMV - I will offer my services FREE. I would assist you with planning and help you at least put a band-aid on this situation. It does not have to cost much to repurpose existing staff. Implementing systems does not need to be costly. Email me if you wish.. I mean it. I could help you boost the morale of your employees and improve your business processes. The formula is so simple.. It really is. I would not charge a cent, I would love would to help the people of Connecticut. Byron - Sorry for the RANT

A dungeon of a dmv. But on the plus side, it does have a little cafeteria. They also have a plate turn in counter that is totally different from the regular waiting line...so that is a plus. New Britain DMV is the best in the state. Go to that one if you actually have to wait in line.

Line to get into the elevator on a Thursday morning. This line gets you to the elevator. EPIC FAIL.

Making my appointment was very easy. First you could select the location of the DMV you'd prefer to go to, the day and finally the time. The hour range was very convenient, from 8:00 AM to well after work hours. Then I received an obnoxious amount of reminder emails. Amongst the many reminder emails I also received one, reminding me to check in 15 minutes before the scheduled appointment time. At this time I was still in the car getting there. Two minutes later I got the notification to proceed to window 8. But I was STILL in the car getting there! Needless to say, I was late. Thankfully, I only had to wait a few minutes to be called to window 5 this time. No one's favorite place is the DMV. It also seems like the people working there really don't like their jobs. The lady at window 5, took my paperwork without saying a word. She charged me $200.00 for new license plates. There's nothing wrong with my old plates, which I had to throw out. You can't go to the DMV without handing them some sort of payment. This process was pretty smooth, fast and well organized. I received my new title in the mail three days later.

As well as my new temporary CDL permit! She was on the phone over and over with the Wethersfield location getting information and whatever else was needed. She was polite, friendly, and professional. As well as the other three people I interacted with. I was wowed at their willingness to help me with something that isn't part of their job at that location! Great experience

I took my driving test today and unfortunately failed, but a major reason I struggled was because of how unnecessarily intimidating and uncomfortable the tester, Lisa, made me feel throughout the test. When I got into the car, I introduced myself and shook her hand, and she did not even acknowledge me or make eye contact. I understand that DMV employees are not there to be my friends, but there is absolutely no reason to treat a 16-year-old who is already extremely nervous as though she is an inconvenience. At one point, I simply asked if I was allowed to back out of the parking space because I like to have confirmation that I am doing something correctly. Lisa responded with a rude and irritated "Yes." Her tone was completely unnecessary and immediately made me feel even more anxious. I was already under an enormous amount of pressure, and instead of helping create a calm and professional testing environment, her attitude made the experience significantly more stressful. The only genuinely positive part of the entire test was speaking with and being reassured by the Next Street instructor, who was kind, patient, and understanding. Unfortunately, he is not employed by the DMV, which made the difference in how I was treated even more noticeable. I understand that the DMV has to maintain high standards and that testers cannot simply give someone a passing grade because they are nervous. However, professionalism and basic courtesy should not be too much to expect. These are 16-year-olds taking one of the most stressful tests they have ever taken, and the attitude of the person sitting next to them can have a huge impact on their ability to perform. The DMV should seriously reconsider how its testers interact with young drivers. If Lisa is going to be testing 16-year-olds, she needs to understand that being cold, dismissive, and unnecessarily rude is not professional. I hope the DMV takes this complaint seriously and considers whether this is the type of attitude it wants representing its testing program.
