I recently had to go to the DMV to register my "new" car. My car was a lease that I have just paid off. I had to first schedule an appointment for said registration on ct.gov/dmv. Making my appointment was very easy. First you could select the location of the DMV you'd prefer to go to, the day and finally the time. The hour range was very convenient, from 8:00 AM to well after work hours. Then I received an obnoxious amount of reminder emails. Amongst the many reminder emails I also received one, reminding me to check in 15 minutes before the scheduled appointment time. At this time I was still in the car getting there. Two minutes later I got the notification to proceed to window 8. But I was STILL in the car getting there! Needless to say, I was late. Thankfully, I only had to wait a few minutes to be called to window 5 this time. No one's favorite place is the DMV. It also seems like the people working there really don't like their jobs. The lady at window 5, took my paperwork without saying a word. She charged me $200.00 for new license plates. There's nothing wrong with my old plates, which I had to throw out. You can't go to the DMV without handing them some sort of payment. This process was pretty smooth, fast and well organized. I received my new title in the mail three days later. read more

I had to come here to get replacement CDL paperwork b/c I was testing two days later. They don't deal with/CDLs at this location but my boss had spoken to someone at the call center that said I could go to anyone. (They were actually wrong about that but this woman helped me anyway). Let me tell you, this woman, I forget her name, went above and beyond to help me get the paperwork I needed. As well as my new temporary CDL permit! She was on the phone over and over with the Wethersfield location getting information and whatever else was needed. She was polite, friendly, and professional. As well as the other three people I interacted with. I was wowed at their willingness to help me with something that isn't part of their job at that location! Great experience read more

Probably the best dmv experience I've ever had! Very clean, and the security guard at the entrance was very helpful. They have a number system where you check in at the kiosk, and it spits out a ticket. I was called within 5 minutes. The whole process took maybe 10. Social distancing is exercised at this location. read more

Social distancing in the DMV in New Britain. During these time this DMV is always crazy busy here. With the appointment concept in place you can book times to come in to the DMV which is a great concept. It limits those who didn't make an appointment. The system is not perfect but it works. I was able to get in do my thing and get out fairly quickly considering this is the DMV we are talking about here. Thursday's you can come in later which is good for those who work during the day. At first glance they're doing well to keep the facility safe from Covid. Appointment only, temp checks and mask requirements. Only issue is when I was in there not all employees were wearing masks, wearing masks correctly and there were customers without masks. First woman who I went to register my car said she couldn't find my title. When she got up to look for a paper copy that I told her wasn't sent to their office, another man came over and told me that she was looking in the wrong digital folder. She came back and no one helped her find my registration. She declared it wasn't here and if I disagreed I could call a 1-800 number. I asked her for the full number, she didn't have it. A co-worker gave her a number. The line was busy. The second number they gave me after I asked again had me on hold. After about 1/2 an hour of being on hold I went to the man's window and he found my registration. So, I just wasted all that time when he could have helped her find my information. Had this happen when they're normally busy, I would have been out of luck and driven home having to find a babysitter again and go back again. Then, I'm missing the correct insurance so I step away from his window to find it in my email. The next customer he helps does not have a mask on. I ask a third employee if she could finish everything up since there were about 4 customers in the office and I did not want to go back to the window where the man had no mask. She did not want to help me, but instead of telling me that, she got the manager. The manager scolded the security guard for letting me stay so long. Then she lectured me on how my appointment was over an hour ago and it doesn't take an hour to find your insurance card. I explained that I did not to be there for an hour and I just wanted to get my plates, pay my money and go. The original woman stepped in and said she'd help me. If she didn't speak up, I would have been asked to leave. She told me that if I don't have my insurance card on hand I normally wouldn't be able to go back to the window and I'd have to come back another time but because she had issues finding my title she'd help me. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? It was the LEAST they could do since they wasted 40 minutes looking for a title that was easily accessible if they knew where to look so don't make me feel like a lucky person for being permitted to come back to a window after finding an insurance card. Not to mention, the employees called the manager on me for not just going home when they said they can't help me. It was nice to know that the crappy attitude and lack of desire to help customers at the DMV is their culture, not that they're over worked since there were no more than 4 customers in there at a time. read more

Apparently "Yolanda" has absolutely no clue what being professional or has customer service means: she has been so far the rudest, unprofessional and disrespectful woman than I had ever spoke to it at an CT DMV office. My wife had previously registered vehicles on her name here on CT, bust this time because "for security and space propuse" GEICO has contracted the names; so "Yolanda" says I'M NOT GOING TO REGISTER THAT CAR! Stopped by the New Britain DMV for a duplicate title at the end of the day on January 17th and there was no one in line, you heard me, NO wait !!! It was crazy. Was kind of waiting for zombies to come around the corner or something. My brain could not register "no line". Within 10 minutes I was in and out the door WITH my duplicate title. The security guard was on a power trip. I was not there personally... but when your husband, 18 year old son and 10 year old daughter were all told that they had one "seat" per "ticket" (waited weeks for the appointment) and were not even allowed to sit on the floor... DO BETTER!! read more

Dare I say I had a pleasant experience at the DMV? The employees I worked with were kind, efficient, and knowledgeable. They also accepted some documentation via email, so if for whatever reason you don't have a hard copy, if you have it available electronically let them know! The only negative part of my visit was that I had an 8:15 appointment and my number was called at 8:45 which was frustrating, as I had my toddler with me. Simply put if you have a FEDERAL PASS PORT and SOCIAL SECURITY CARD ... you should be good for a "real" LICENSE .. the Birth certificate is done on the "state level" . The amount of identification the DMV is requiring is BULLSHIT .. and the people in charge need to have HALF A BRAIN.. my middle name was omitted from my license because it didn't fit . Now it doesn't match the name on my passport ., thats not MY fault . Just because DMV updated their system to make it more accurate is not my fault. read more

Very clean and discreet windows . They have a good managed number system with knowledgeable employees . I have came to this one many times and I always have a good outlook . Today I arrived with a line in progress outside . It was about to open and there was close to 50 people waiting . Once the doors opened tickets were given out and the line moved swiftly . I had 35 numbers ahead of me which took one hour wait ,but they have vending machines there to grab and drink or snack while watching the TV screens for your number to pop up. read more

This has got to be one of the worst motor vehicles in the state. Took a half hour in line just to get a number to go sit down and wait for your number to get called. Have now been waiting for over an hour for licensing and they have 2 desks open for licensing. The tellers serve about 2 people if you're lucky then they leave and go to the other side and talk, then come back maybe 5 minutes later laughing and taking their time. If you come to this DMV plan on making a day of it. I thought they were stream lining this , it is the same or worse than before. I received a letter on Nov 3rd that there "might" be a compliance issue about renewing my registration, and I should email proof of uninterrupted insurance. I promptly did so, paid my fee and even had my insurance company verify it. The registration was still suspended and three months later they still haven't gotten around to posting the renewal!The woman on the phone said they are "a few months behind" in reading their emails! So because they can't do their job I can't legally drive my car. This is unacceptable and a political time bomb. read more

The level of incompetence at this building will amaze you. Some kid pulled a fire alarm, so they made everyone go outside, on the coldest day of the year. I understand emergency protocol but we all know a kid pulled the alarm and it must not be much of an emergency if the "DMV Inspectors" (look like cops) get to stand inside smiling and laughing, while keeping people, including parents with infant children, waiting outside. The firemen show up, and as it turns out, someone either from the Dmv or fire department lost the keys to the alarm system, so they can't shut it off and they won't let anyone inside. What should have been a 10 minute fire alarm has now been going on for almost an hour. And this is on top of the headache it will be to get back in line, sort everyone out, and get back to the unpleasantness of dealing with the Dmv and yadda yadda. Seriously, shame on whoever lost the key. Shame on how they handled it. They determined there was no threat yet still wouldn't let anyone inside, instead making us a wait while they look for they key someone lost, who knows how long ago. They must not do regular safety checks. This location is also notorious for having their systems crash. I'm sure it's bound to happen at least once while you're waiting. Get coffee before you come, charge your phone.. You'll be here the entire day.. Just hope that no one pulls the fire alarm. read more

Yes, I'm reviewing the freakin' DMV! And with a good report no less! The new system they have at all the DMVs actually works pretty darn well. You tell the person at the front desk what you need to accomplish, and you get a numbered ticket, then sit down. When it's your turn, the automated PA system will announce, "Ticket number A406, please go to counter number 12," or something like that. I've registered a car at this location, and gotten my license renewed. Both times, I spent no more than 20-25 minutes in the building. It's not particularly crowded - much less so than the Wethersfield location - so this is a far better choice when you just have simple business to accomplish. Employees aren't exactly butlers at the Waldorf Astoria, but you already knew that... Overall, it's a tolerable experience, and considering we're talking about the DMV, that's just about the highest compliment I've ever given anything. read more

When someone finally answered the phone I explained to her that I had paid parking tickets and was ready to register my new SUV. The dealer had been trying to get in touch with them. Absolutely HORRIBLE experience today! The wait wasn't long at at all and the woman greeting people at the door was very kind. However, the blonde agent at station 11 was HORRIFIC! I was turning in my registration refund form, with reg certificate and license plates as the form instructed me to do so. She said "why didn't you just mail the form in". I said "the form says to turn all three things in together". She said "well that is an old form and we didn't get the new one yet". I said "well you can't fault someone for following the instructions on the only form you have to give out!". My refund paper had to be submitted by tomorrow...she asked "why didn't you come earlier". I said, "excuse me? I have until tomorrow to submit this paper, I'm here a day early". Unbelievable! If I didn't have my three small kids with me I would have asked to see the supervisor! PATHETIC...I stopped in at the New Britain DMV to renew my registration and after picking up a ticket I was directed to wait in the customer service line to make sure you have everything you need. However, there was only one customer service person and the line was out the door. After about 15 minutes a second customer service representative finally showed up and I reached the counter in a speedy 20 minutes. With my paperwork in order I was told to sit and waited for my "D" number to be called...but after 30 more minutes with only two "D" numbers called and some 50 numbers to go to get to mine and the fact that the guy sitting next to me had already been there 2 hours I said the hell with it. With two casinos, a state income tax and sales tax, high gas taxes and a lottery I'd like to know, "what the HELL the state does with all our money...the DMV is a disgrace. read more

I dreaded a visit to the DMV for weeks and finally decided to bite the bullet. I chose to go very early in the morning, within 30 min of opening, when there are less people. I was given a ticket at the entrance and within 15 min my number was called. Tracy F took me. Tracy was pleasant, knowledgeable and kind. It is no wonder that Dannel Malloy was rated the 50th worst governer in early U.S. I had to wait 35 minutes at the DMV to have my papers reviewed. All I needed to do was have my previous license plates transfered to my new car. The first clerk would not approve the transaction because I did not have the title. She simply could not understand that done there was a loan on the car, the credit union holds​ the title. I had to speak with her supervisor who finally understood what needed to be done and approved my papers. I have now been here for 1 hour and fifty minutes and still have more than 12 people ahead of me. Malloy should do something about unreasonable waits at the DMV. read more

Everyone is pleasant, but the wait is crazy long! I was in line for almost an hour to get a number. They were on number 23 and I am number 70. 2.5 hours waiting and they are on number 52. I'm looking at least one more hour wait. At least I managed to get my steps in for the day walking outside. read more

Obviously the DMV is a state run entity, shocking that it's so inept. I have been trying to register a car for 3 days now. Each time I come here I check the online estimates wait and each time it is DEAD WRONG. And each time I sit here for 2 hours I inevitably have to leave before completing my business because, like everybody else, life is busy. Today had the best estimated wait time of only 58 minutes. I have now been here for 60 minutes and there are 4 customer windows out of 9 open. At least 100 people are waiting. It is interesting that they use a Letter/Number combo on the tickets instead of just using numbers. I am sure this has much to do with deceiving people by not really giving an authentic estimate of how many people are ahead of you. Connecticut has been on a steady downhill slide for a reason, Gov Malloy has not improved anything. I can't get out of this miserable state fast enough. However, when there are close to 200 people waiting for assistance and only 2 staff members at their service windows, while 6 other employees vacate their space and are seen chatting and laughing in the back office, there's a fundamental problem. I would rate this POS zero stars but 1 is the Lowest you can go. I tried to Reregister my car, waited in line 1hr 10 mins just to get my paperwork looked at. Then waited 2 hrs 20 mins to have the clerk tell me she cant do it But Could'nt tell me why ?? I went home and called the 800 # they gave me. The guy said I was all set Nothing Wrong. Went back to the Scum hole waited 3 more hours COULD'NT Register it CLERK Said to call 800 #. Come to find out when I switched Insurance companies the Dmv computer said I had no insurance which was Wrong Had it the whole time. Finally able to register it on the 3rd trip & 10 Hours. They should ALL BE FIRED. TOTAL LACK OF ANY BUSINESS KNOWLEDGE IN CT. 2 More years Retiring & moving to Florida. I will never go back I will pay the fine if I get caught driving illegally. read more

average of three to four hours to wait to correct a mistake with registration the whole day. i estimated if 400 people this day missed 5 hours of work this day that would mean 2000 hours of labor because staffing was short! it was explained to me this happened earlier in the week too. a staff member told me to come early to avoid the wait. that means to wait in life before they open to minimize the wait but potentially still long. did he really mean this as a solution? he explained that my dealer really screwed me over. did he really mean this? i think dmv screwed me over. i waited over 3 hours for a 2 minute process. 2000 hours of labor a day at least is dismissing the value of employment. That's about $20,000 at a low wage of $10 and lets assume at least 25% of the people were above this. If they staff 4 people for a small percentage of this per day they will be supporting AND increasing employment in CT. Unfair to ask us to take the burden in this case. read more
