I had to renew my driver's license on a Saturday morning, and quickly drove over at 11:45 am when they closed at 12:30 pm. I was in and out in less then 20 minutes. Before going, I got multiple recommendations to go to the AAA office in Avon - I'm glad I went to the DMV instead, it was a shorter drive and AAA charges an $8 "convenience" fee. It's definitely a ... vintage... building, I'm not sure the state has invested anything in refurbishment since the 1960's. I have been lied to for a whole month. My daughter had an appointment the end of July for her knowledge test. The Norwalk CT branch made her wait around for 6 hours because they had a system issue that day. They never seen her for her appointment nor rescheduled her as promised. I have spoke with 5 different customer service people on the phone who promised to have their supervisor contact me the same day and noone ever has. The DMV is very unprofessional and they dont care about the people of CT. This is intolerable! read more

I went to renew my license. on 5/15/21 in Enfield Ct. I think it was a great idea by the state for people to make an appointment before going to DMV. This keeps the crowds down and and keeps the flow going. I think I was there about 1/2 hour. I hope this is a permanent thing because it should have been this way from the start. I think there should be markings outside to keep everyone at a proper distance for covid reasons. Thanks again to the governor. read more

I don't even want to give this place a 1 but if I don't can't write a review. I went to the DMV 2X in 1 day first time they told me I needed a new form from my Dr because the one that they had my Dr fax to them wasn't going to work (it was fine when they originally got it except that because my drivers license was going to expire in 2 months they refused to renew my disability card so I had no disability card until this month). When I was at the dmv the first time that day they could have told me I needed my ss card and birth certificate to get a driver's license so I can fly back and forth from CT to CA, no it wasn't even on the license renewal form and they didn't inform me about any of it on my 2nd trip there the same day. Now mind you my boyfriend on his renewal form said he had the choice of paying for 6yrs $76 or 8yrs $96 and nothing about him needing extra forms to get a license (with a star apparently) to fly. Me #1 I wasn't given the choice of whether I wanted to pay 6yr or 8yr I had to pay the 8yr (only choice I was given) and my boyfriend wasn't told anywhere on his renewal form he needed ss card and birth certificate (yes I read his renewal form) they didn't charge him an extra $30 that they are telling me it cost that now I have to pay extra. The woman I spoke to on the phone stayed professional in most part but brought up politics saying something about the governor. I straight told her that the governor is a liar and thief, so since I went there with her on the subject she brought up then she all the sudden said I have a right to my political views and that she was going to end the call. She brought politics into it (which is NOT supposed to happen) I called her on it and she didn't like it. I got pissed because I called about my license and she told me I can talk to a supervisor only when I make an appointment and go into the dmv office. read more

Earliest appointment 2 weeks out. I call and wait on hold for 90 minutes to make sure I bring all the correct documentation. Then at the appointment they tell me the person I spoke with was wrong and I have to now make another appointment...2 more weeks out. I went to the DMV on Thomaston Rd. in Waterbury on Oct. 28, 2021 to have my deceased father's vehicle's registration transferred to me. The young lady working at Station 10 at 4:30 that afternoon couldn't have been nicer. She was professional, courteous, and the whole transaction took 5 minutes. The absolute most inefficient place on earth. There is nobody working the line for people waiting to just get a number. It took an hour for someone to say I need to come back with additional paperwork and wait in the line all over again. When I complained they dismissed me and said "write a letter". I was on hold for 20 just to ask a question. When the woman finally came on she was very abrupt and kept interrupting me every time I tried to speak. I had to ask her to please not interrupt me and told her I was just holding for 20 minutes and would like to ask her some questions! Connecticut DMV - One booth open.. - Departments of Motor Vehicles Near Me - Winsted, Connecticut

DMVs in CT are not my favorite place, but this satellite office offers a reprieve from some of the larger hubs with never ending lines. I've been here twice and found the staff to be pleasant and generally helpful. You can check the wait time and hours (they're only open a few days a week and for certain services since it's a satellite office) online. Service is still slow but much better than the other offices I've seen or heard about from friends. Richard (one of the staff there) was beyond helpful to me--thanks Richard! I noticed a handful of folks arriving just before closing (3:50 pm or so) and they were in and out in no time. Might be worth giving it a shot. Definitely read everything online so you have all the paperwork you need to get in and out in one trip without issue. read more

UPDATE: Three years ago all seemed on the mend at CT DMV in Norwalk. Then, months before Covid, things went way south for CT DMV. I lived in Connecticut almost all my life and family still there. I was transferred by work to a different state but kept a house in Connecticut that I rent out and I keep a car there for when I visit. I bought a used car for this purpose last summer and made 3 visits to Norwalk DMV to get it registered--with slightly different requirements each time. On each visit the clerk said I had to get the car registered in CT as that was where it was garaged. As soon as I paid the transfer tax and requested my disabled veteran plates the clerk told me that I had made a mistake and that since I was no longer a CT resident I had to get the car registered in my resident state. It was obviously my fault! Even though 3 clerks had assured me that I had to have CT plates on it. Even though there is a box on the form that I checked to say my residence is out of CT. When I asked for a supervisor I was given a number to call, and when I did, a manager who would give his name only as "Alan from Wethersfield" told me that of course I was in error. And of course, CT would keep my transfer tax payment. People wonder why taxpayers are fleeing Connecticut? Call Alan to find out. read more

This DMV is ONLY getting 3 stars because you know, we have to have the DMV in order to get certain things done! I strolled in there on a weekday afternoon and had to wait in a line outside of the front door for about 45 minutes JUST to get a ticket. What happens next? well you have to sit down and wait again (1 hour 20 minutes) for your number to be called. I wish you could say "hey, you know I just need to renew my ID quick" but unfortunately they treat everyone equally with an unbiased, robotic attitude. I was under the impression that I had 2 weeks after my license expired to renew it without a fee, but I was wrong! I moved not too long ago, and I must have missed a reminder to get a new ID. $97 for a new CT Drivers License if you wait too long, but its a hell of a lot better than getting pulled over and getting a ticket for it! I completely forgot about this until I was carded at a liquor store and they said "um...your license is expired we cant sell this to you." Make sure your on time people! read more

Winsted DMV-the good news first, availability of appointments & wait time quick. The bad news is the clerk was insufficient in reviewing my paperwork for change in ownership for a registration. He immediately pointed out a missing signature on the back of title & totally ignored that I had A83 (Power of Attorney) form which gave me the legal right to sign the missing signature of the other joint owner. He even checked with the supervisor who never went the extra mile to ask if I had a POA. At this point my frustration & emotions were kicking in as we had been to a DMV the previous day & I had got this special form notarized since the other buyer could not go. Bottom line I had to rebook for an hour later after driving an hour home to meet my husband for a signature that I had the right to sign all along. II made my point to the supervisor when I got back on the authority to sign & she agreed with no apology for the big inconvenience they caused. The worst possible service institution on the planet. It could not get worse. There months to transfer a registration from another state? It its still not done. My choices are to drive illegally or sell my automobile and buy INSIDE Connecticut. Customer service is rude, careless and unresponsive, guided by antiquated rules and a 'too bad for you' mentality. It's a wonder there are any vehicles on the road given backwards, ill equipped and stagnant institution that is the CT DMV. CT DMV requires a physical copy of the vehicle title that any 'up to par with technology' lien holder simply does not have. Loan institutions have a soft or electronic copy of the title which of course will not suffice. Even the original sellers title, proof of purchase and a current registration is not enough to satisfy the stupidity at CT DMV. My lending institution had to request a hard copy from out of state and mail it to CT DMV by certified mail TWICE, CT DMV rejected the mail the first time because the CT DMV didn't know who it was for, even though it had MY NAME ON IT! CT DMV could not be more stupid or ignorant. In other states, these ordinary tasks take LESS THAN ONE DAY! CT DMV of July should be dismantled and privatized. Hartford had to cancel 4th of July activities due to lack of funds yet CT DMV rolls along like a broken stage coach. Where is the money going? I also believe auto dealers in CT must be providing kick-backs because all drivers are forced to buy cars in-state. read more

Went for license renewal, got there at 8am, Was told it was an hour wait once you get your number, then I waited an hour for my number (standing outside) then waited 3 1/2 hours !!!. Was told at that point by the agent its this way every day!!! Everybody is in the same line. There should be a separate line for license renewals. Arrived at 8am out at 12:30, we can't do better than that for a routine license renewal? read more

Not a bad line when i walked in. A gentleman with a survey asked if I would fill it out and I complied. While I waited to be called I noticed the woman behind the counter yapping away to a customer about dogs for 5 min. After the customer left i was called up and taken care of. Terrible service, terrible rudeness, terrible wait and terrible information. Had to wait 2 hours for a one minute transaction. Information given at original time was incorrect. Cost an extra $70 and had the wrong paperwork, thanks to the wrong information from a previous employee. And there is no info online about it (putting plates on hold and then retrieving them). And near closing time, they reorganize how they process people so some people who had been there 10 minutes got their paperwork done and were gone, but people who had waited two hours were still waiting. No reason for that and very unfair. One window was open even though there were 52 people ahead of me. One window stayed open (only one) until 20 minutes before closing, then an extra person magically appeared to help out. They are only open 4 days a week as it is, you would think they could have an extra person or two to actually work there. And the time they spend on personal conversations NOT helping customers should be stopped, but apparently there is no supervisor to actually get them to do their job. read more

I went to the Winstead branch a few weeks ago to return plates on a Saturday. There weren't many people and the service was fast and courteous. I was completely surprised as this has not been my typical experience at DMV. Maybe I got lucky on a weekend. Either way, kudos to DMV for once. read more

Danbury Ct DMV After driving around for a parking space for 30 minutes we entered and a very nice young lady gave us some more forms and directed us to a line for information. We waited in line 35 minutes for a guy , who was also pleasant to give us a number and looked over our documents which he said was I order. Our number was called promptly and we went to a window where Elizabeth B was working she was very rude and confrontational. She said where's your letters where's your licenses where's your birth certificate! I can't do this without them and who sent you over here!!Almost yelling at us like a crabby old school teacher. My husband finally could not stand it anymore and put her in her place where after that was more tolerable. If you take a job with the general public and DMV of all places you must know how stressful and aggravating it will be. I am not sure why someone can keep their job behaving like that. Anyplace else you would be reprimanded for poor customer service and maybe loose your job. Take note DMV of how the state of Florida works with people making appointments and then taking a number as a walk in and someone able to do what ever you need And be pleasant to you!! read more

When you go to the DMV is may be best to go online or call them to check what you need. We happened to be registering a vehicle right around when car taxes were due. We went in the day after the taxes were due and we were told to bring a release from the tax collector showing we had paid our car taxes. We had paid them on time, but our checks hadn't been processed yet. Needless to say, we had to go back to the tax office for that. Also, the second time we went to the DMV we were told our car title showed a POA signature. We had never heard of that, but we had to go back to the seller to get a form that shows that the person who signed off on the title was legally able to do so. Two trips to the DMV, an extra trip to the dealer, two trips to the tax office and I think we are now good to go. My question is, why can't a lot of this paper shuffle be done electronically? In this day and age, I was just baffled at the bureaucratic red tape. read more
