I joined the Motoquest crew for a 9 day tour to the American South West, starting in Las Vegas and covering Monument Valley, Moab, Bryce Canyon and Zion. From the start, Dax and Dan were the ultimate hosts and guides. Nothing was too much for them and they helped on gear, bikes, and settling into the tour. Read This Before You Rent from MotoQuest I recently rented a BMW 1250GS from MotoQuest's Anchorage location. Because I planned to take the bike up the Dalton Highway, I was charged an additional $600 surcharge. I understood the risks and was okay with that charge, knowing that rough roads could potentially cause damage. To be cautious, I also purchased the Level 1 and Level 2 damage waivers, along with supplemental liability insurance, which added another $267 to my rental. I was told that the Level 2 waiver would cover an additional $2,000 in damage. At pickup, an associate walked me through the bike and had me sign a stack of paperwork. Here's where I made a mistake--I was eager to get on the road and didn't comb through the fine print. The associate showed me a couple of rims that had been dinged on past rentals, but never mentioned that replacing a rim could cost $2,500. If I had known that, I would never have taken the bike up the Dalton Highway. When I returned the bike, I even went out of my way to pressure wash it before drop-off, just to help the staff with the inspection. That's when I was told the rear rim was damaged. I was completely unaware--there was no noticeable impact during the ride, no drop in air pressure, and the bike rode just fine the entire way. I assumed the $2,000 insurance would cover it. But once I got home, I was hit with an invoice for nearly $2,500, including a $125 "admin fee." After some research, I found that the same rim can be purchased online for under $2,000. When I pushed back, I was told the $2,000 insurance is just a cap, meaning it limits my liability to $2,000, which means anything above $2000 I wouldn't have to pay. This was never clearly explained to me--not before the trip, not at return, not until two days later in an email after I was already home. This lack of transparency is deeply frustrating. MotoQuest hands you a bike, rushes through the paperwork, and then blindsides you with a massive invoice after the fact. I would strongly advise anyone to think twice before renting from MotoQuest. This felt like a bait-and-switch, and I wouldn't trust them again. read more

Our final plans involved riding our bikes from our home bases to Portland, Oregon, where we picked up smaller rental ADV bikes from MotoQuest for the ride up the AlCan to Alaska. Dax Harlow and his team were extremely accommodating and helpful during the planning and once we got to Oregon. The bikes were reliable, well maintained, and survived the 17 days we rode them with no issues. I highly recommend MotoQuest if you're thinking of doing a similar ride. I did my dream trip to Prudhoe Bay from Anchorage this July and used Motoquest instead of riding up from CA on my own bike because of time constraints and implied safety in numbers on the Dalton Highway. I rode the base GS 750 as did 7 other riders plus the guide. On day 2, the rear brake light stayed on all the time so at the end of the day in Fairbanks, the tour staff swapped it out for another GS 750 from the accompanying trailer. There had been less than 100 miles of offroad till this point and it was all tame, hard packed dirt. I then rode the second, replacement GS 750 for the remaining 6 days of the tour to Prudhoe Bay and back to Anchorage that was mostly very tough offroad filled with mud, gravel, rocks and potholes. I never dropped the bike or hit any significant potholes during the entire trip on either bike. When I returned the bike in Anchorage, it was checked out and marked clear without damage. 3 days later, I got an email from Motoquest that my full $3000 deposit was being held as there was rim damage on the bike. Not on the bike I rode through the Dalton Highway filled with rocks and potholes for six days but the first bike that I rode on mostly paved roads for just two days! This bike was bouncing along on the accompanying trailer for the remaining 6 days till it was dropped off in Anchorage. I tried to reason with the tour rep who completely ignored my logic and said "you ONLY have to pay $1500" since I paid extra for the very misleading "level 2 damage waiver" I foolishly took this extra coverage to mean that any routine wear and tear, particularly on wheels and tires, would be covered and I would be responsible for any non-routine damage like crashes etc. I also foolishly didn't videotape/ photograph every inch of the bike as I like the other riders was so excited to get going on this dream, epic ride. I later learned that 6 of the 8 GS 750s had bent rims, all with cast wheels! Including the GS 750 used by the very experienced tour guide! These are supposed be off road prepped bikes! None of the other bikes, a GS 850 and four GS 1250s with spoked wheels had any rim issues even though some of those went down during the trip. I am so disappointed with Motoquest for their dubious business practices by renting bikes inappropriate for the conditions and getting their routine maintenance costs paid for by trusting riders like myself and the 5 other riders who were victimized. I even wrote to the CEO of the company who send me a patronizing and dismissive two sentence reply. I was thinking of going on additional Motoquest tours in Europe and Asia but will never spend one penny with this outfit or refer anyone from my rider network. Their employees in Anchorage were friendly but the culture of the organization is rotten and shortsighted. AVOID Motoquest!!! read more

Took the Kenai Penisula tour with my wife for our 25th anniversary. Been riding for many years, but never done a tour, let alone a tour on the other side of the country in Alaska. Phil and his staff were excellent. Communication was great prior to the trip. All my questions were answered within a day right up to departure. Once in Anchorage the attentiveness continued. The initial dinner was excellent. We then moved to pick up the bikes. Since I was 2up we chose the 2017 HD Electragilde. Bike was mechanically just fine. Set up as I requested. Our tour guide was Tom Anderson, he was great. Very attentive to us and whatever we needed. Knowledgeable about the area and the little local places. Reservations were flawless. The anniversary gift was a nice touch, I completely did not expect. Kudos! I won't get into the itinerary as you can find those on Motoquest.com. Sent a rental request in the night before, since I was only going to be in town for a day. Showed up this morning and was told sorry. They had to fire two technicians apparently and didn't have the manpower to rent a motorcycle. I counted no less than 15 motorcycles in the garage. I've used them in Portland, and they seemed a little fly by night there also. I think they are geared more toward large tours and multiple day rentals than the one day rental I was doing. They had a tour leaving that morning and it was "all hands on deck" getting them out. I asked about 2 weeks from now, since I'll be in town again, and was told don't bother, "but we're taking reservations for next year." Bottom line, probably good for touts and long range (time wise) rentals, but not short notice one day rentals. read more

I did a four day "transportation rental" from Long Beach, CA, to Portland, OR on a BMW F850GS. I found MotoQuest by researching motorcycle exploration of Alaska on the Internet. I have some dirt experience as a young man, but thousands of hours of street experience. I've never ridden a adventure touring bike, and the transportation rental was a great way to get the feel of one. It was a great ride (thanks BMW). The MotoQuest bike was in great shape and I never had an issue (even in the pouring rain). It came with ample storage. The staff at MotoQuest that I dealt with were exemplary, from the reservation process to pick up to drop off. Brad in Long Beach spent plenty of time going over the bike's features, answered questions and took the time to go over map routes I might want to try on my trip northward. Dax in Portland was friendly, wanted to know how I felt about the bike and let me look around the shop at their inventory because I was nosy. If I can make a trip to Alaska happen, I will go with MotoQuest for transportation based on my four day experience. read more

The bike was good, equipment worked well, could tell side panniers had been crashed previously as it was difficult to put on and take off. Not a big deal, bike otherwise ran great and was reliable. My only complaint is that even with 2 weeks notice we could not get the surcharge for the Dalton removed even though we didn't go to Dalton. These adventures change as the group hashes things out, not allowing refunds of large $300 surcharges that 5 of us paid is a lot of money that was kept and for nothing. Employees told us they had to put fresh tires on because of Dalton. We paid an additional $300 for the nobbies in addition to the $300 surcharge. So we paid 3000 total for tires that I could have put on for less than half that price. We were told we get a 300 credit for 12 months to use at motoquest. Our next adventure is Costa Rica next year and they are not available there so the money is gone for nothing. $1,500 in surcharges that were for something we didn't do and gave notice as such. Our bikes were being used at the time we made the final decision so it should have been adjusted. It's a shame that we will not be using Motoquest in the future do to this. There are other companies I will give a chance to earn our longterm business. The cold beer upon return was a nice touch, but I can buy a lot of beers for 1500. read more

Alaska was my 50th state to ride a motorcycle in. I had planned this trip for over a year, planning to rent and ride a "Harley" from Anchorage to Seward round trip on Father's Day. Plans changed! My wife and I picked the bike up, signed the papers, demonstrated my riding skills to the attendant and we took off. We rode leisurely the 130 miles to Seward, planning picture sites for the return trip back to Anchorage. 6 miles out of Seward,returning back to Anchorage, the bike broke down due to mechanical failure. No tools were on the bike, so it required borrowing from a motorhome driver that was broken down nearby. After attempting to repair the bike, I called MotoQuest for support. (@4:50pm) Following numerous questions on the phone about the problem, they decided that a mechanical failure had occurred and they sent a repairman. My wife and I waited 3.5 hours for arrival; only to be accused of "screwing with the linkage" by the repairman. I assured him that I never adjusted the linkage and showed him where the mechanical failure had occurred. (I had reassembled the broken part, but couldn't shift following the reassembly) I questioned riding the undependable bike back to Anchorage, leaving at 8:45 pm, riding roads that were unfamiliar with my wife on the back of the bike. The repairman indicated that it was my responsibility, according to the rental agreement, to return the bike timely to Anchorage. I questioned him; his statement indicated that if I didn't want to ride it home I could stay in Seward (my expense) and have it hauled home tomorrow.(my expense) He stated that a service call on Sunday is very inconvenient for he and his staff! I asked for compensation for the 4 hours of lost riding time - he refused to consider any kind of a credit and again stated, "read your agreement." ( I had not been provided a copy of the agreement when I left on the bike) When I returned the bike to MotoQuest of Anchorage the next morning by 9:00 am, following our return trip the previous day arriving back at 11:15 pm, I asked to speak to the "Manager." The employee informed me that the manager is who traveled to Seward to make the repair! I asked to speak to the owner. He provided me the contact information of the co-owner in California. After several attempts to contact "Brendon" unsuccessfully, leaving voice messages and emails that were not responded to, I decided to use "social media" to spread the word about my dissatisfaction. My recommendation: Rent from a reliable dealership that offers roadside service in the event of mechanical failure of the "Harley." Read the contract - I have read the contract several times and there is nothing written about breaking down, other than riding to Prudhoe Bay area and/or taking the bike into Canada. The rider becomes responsible for mechanical failure. read more
