This was my first visit to this only take out establishment in Lewiston Maine featuring northern Indian dishes. India is a huge country so there are many regional variations of dishes one may be accustomed to ordering in the US. My son is local and frequently orders from Mother India and raves about it. We called the restaurant to place our pick up order. We ordered Raita, samosas, lamb Keema Mutter, lamb curry, makhni chicken, garlic naan, and batura. The order was ready in 25 mins. Every dish was fantastic and flavorful and nothing was overly spicy. Wonderful melding of spices. All tasted fresh. The portions were generous and we had plenty for another meal. I have my own favorite Indian place where I live and Mother India was comporable in quality, taste, and value. I would not be hesitant to order from here again and recommend. Excellent food and service. Don't miss this local gem if you are in the area. We were visiting the area for a family weekend and wanted to have friends and family join us for dinner. I had a special request from my daughter for Mother India. I needed some help ordering since I wasn't familiar with many of the dishes. I stopped by the restaurant to place an order and get recommendations and the staff was incredibly helpful and provided excellent recommendations. When we picked up our order, everything was freshly made, perfectly packaged and labeled which made setting up a buffet style dinner very easy. It was a huge hit with our guests! The garlic naan, chicken tikka marsala, lamb, malai kofta, and kheer was delicious. Just the right amount of spice. Dinning room service is still closed but take out and Door Dash are both available. I am really not that well versed in Indian food however I do know that I greatly enjoy eating from here as Mother India was one of the best food experiences my family and I have had! It was so delicious. We had planned our entire week around having it one Friday night for dinner and we were not disappointed. Everything from the naan to the chicken tikka masala to the little fried cheese balls in a honey-rose water syrup for dessert were eaten up completely! I'm so happy a fantastic culinary experience like Mother India exists in the lewiston/auburn area. We intend on trying everything from the menu. The Malai Kofta was one of our favorites--balls of freshly minced vegetables simmered in cardamom, saffron, garlic, cashews, almonds, and light cream sauce. Soooo good. read more

Throughout the years the service, atmosphere, and food at Mother India have remained harmoniously consistent. Despite all the new and shiny restaurants popping up all over the state, it can be hard to deviate away from somewhere like here when you know - without a doubt - that you'll be genuinely welcomed by the owners who will then stuff you full of delicious food that will be exactly how you remembered it or hoped it would be. When I'm in town visiting my dad, this is usually our go to (I introduced him to Indian food a couple years ago and now he's obsessed). I think I've tried nearly everything on the menu since my father doesn't actually know how to eat at a restaurant like a normal person; he only feasts like a king so our gluttonous nights out include a little bit of everything and then some. That being said, definitely don't miss the: **Papadams - mostly, I'll do anything for a good chutney and Mother India's are not to be missed; papadams are the perfect vessel for whatever magic is happening in those silver bowls. **Punjabi Nan - this is my favorite naan in the state (and the only one I'll actively go out of my way to order); the bread is that perfect combination of fluffy and charcoal-y, and this particular one is filled with a sweet coconut, spice, and nut blend. **Nav Rattan Korma - it's like all the best parts of Indian food (cauliflower, green peas, potatoes, cashews, raisins, and homemade cheese) in a thick gingery, garlicky, cardamom spiced sauce. When a restaurant does this well (like MI does), it's out of this world! Also: Mother India offers vegan options. Though they might not be clearly listed on the menu - the offer to make something is. Take. Them. Up. On. It. You will not be disappointed. This place feels homey and the vibe is always really mellow here (I think the hues of gold and maroon make me zen out). Worst Indian food ever We ordered "aloo palak" and "chicken makhani" (butter chicken) and then ensured we had worst Indian food in a long time . We asked spice level to be medium , but "aloo palak" was so spice that we can take a bite without gulping it with water . Chicken Makhni was even worse with unmarinated and unseasoned boiled chicken cubicles swimming in a tomato gravy . Sir , that's not chicken makhni . We just moved to Auburn Maine, and love Indian food, which was hard to find (any good) in Florida. We got takeout a few nights ago. It was the best Indian food we have had in a long time. Very spicy, but I expected that. Order mild to medium if you don't like very hot food. I ordered medium to hot, and am sure I will ask for medium next time. But, the flavors were wonderful, and the fish madras was full of chunks of haddock, and very tasty. Chicken Korma was very good also. After considering it for awhile (too long) we ventured in for an early Sunday dinner while our daughter was at a birthday dinner with friends. Everything about Mother India was a treat for our senses - decor, music, hospitality, and food! We started with Garlic Nan and Onion Kulcha. Both were warm and scrummy as they were, but the variety of dipping sauces added a spicy touch. As vegans, we were looking for delicious options and were not disappointed by the Mushroom Mutter (0 spice for my wife) and Vegetable Biryani (4 spice - perfect!). However, few items like the mixed grill and tikka, grilled meat soaked in sweet sauce, is not authentic Indian food. I had a break between classes and cafeteria food just wasn't going to do it today. Not knowing exactly what I wanted I settled on Mother India for their lunch buffet so I could have everything. So glad I did. For $10 I had the opportunity to eat some of the best food I have ever had until I needed to unbuttoned my pants to make room for more. The chicken curry was my favorite topped with their spicey relish. But then again the Tikka marsala was amazing too. Oh gosh I can't choose a favorite. Hands down the best Indian food I've ever had. We ordered: - Chicken madras - Chicken Sag - Pompadams - Naan bread aaaand holy moly! The spices, the flavor was there! The rice is beautifully seasoned with cardamom and something else I couldn't quite place. But man! It complimented the food in the best way. This is probably the worst Indian food I have ever had. The curry's are very soupy/watery with no substance. I had the buffet on a Wednesday and had the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Mango Chicken. I also ordered a side of Garlic Naan. Nothing like Naan I have had at other numerous places. It felt store bought and warmed up in their oven. Soft and soggy on the inside. I was visiting maine with my family from NYC and weve been to many indian restaurants but this one was outstanding! Beautifully decorated family owned restaurant in the heart of Maine - a hidden gem you dont want to miss out on! We had a variety of dishes all reccommended by our gracious waitress and everything was top notch. We had nav rattan korma, shahi panerr makhni chicken, lamb kabab, and fish madras all were superb! Hurrah for the closest Indian Restaurant to Franklin County!! My wife and I are recent transports to Western Maine from Boston and we have been dying over the lack of Indian Food. Mother India is the only option less than an hour's drive from where we live. While we were not blown away by our first meal, everything was decent enough, with terrific buttery non and a very good lamb biryani. The Korma was a bit too salty for our tastes. We are so happy to have this in the area and we will be back as soon as possible to try the Vindaloo. read more

Coming from Los Angeles I've had some great and not-so-great Indian cuisine. This so far is the best I've had. First off the onion naan was over the top delicious. It was like a pizza crust. Most naan is pretty good, but nothing special in the end. This was worth going back - just for the naan. I had Keema Mutter which is a ground lamb dish with peas. I couldn't pick out coriander and ginger as individual spices like I do in my own cooking. However this was spiced - it was fantastic. My wife had the Chicken Tikka Saag. I only had one bite so I don't have a great description, but it was spiced and cooked very well. I'll have to go back to try more dishes - I normally get vindaloo or lamb saag so those may be next to compare to something familiar. The sauces for the naan were mint, spicy, and mango (I think). All were light, colorful, and a great pairing to the naan. Beyond that the atmosphere was relaxed-romantic. Not too dressy, but not inviting to scrubs. Service was great - smiles and prompt. Can't say enough - if you know Indian food - you will not be disappointed here. read more

Yes please. Went to Mother India for the first time on Sunday and they offer an amazing buffet! Hidden in the old downtown of Lewiston you'll find a great staff, authentic well cooked Indian cuisine, and a great rice pudding to boot. Our server was really friendly and proud of Mother India, as he should be! Some favorites of mine were the korma, saag paneer, garlic naan and the rice pudding! They do buffet on Wed. Thurs. and Sunday afternoons. After lunch (around 3) they close for a few hours and re-open for dinner. I'd recommend Mother India to anyone in the area looking for some authentic and delicious Indian cuisine at a great price. Buffet for 3 was less than $40! I had never had Indian food before and I have to say, I'm hooked. The food was phenomenal and the staff is just great. One of the friendliest restaurants I have ever been to, and some of the best food I've ever eaten. I'm a VERY picky eater and I ate everything on my plate (stuffed myself but good since they do serve pretty nice portions) and a fair bit of the appetizers. I cannot express in words, how simply amazing the dining experience at Mother India was today. I went with a group of friends, and we stumbled on this gem of a restaurant in Lewiston ME. I had the poori, with Shahi Makhani, and for desert, a delectable mango lassi. The poori and garlic naan came with a melange of chutneys. I could have literally had that alone as a dish, and all would have been just fine with the world. Then the Shahi Makhani came, beautifully presented with perfumed basmati rice. The Makhani sauce was savory, tangy, and buttery. The raisins at the bottom of the bowl provided a wonderful contrast to balance out the whole dish. The staff was very friendly, and offered the suggestion to me, as I didn't see Paneer Makhani on the menu. I was completely blown away by the flavors. I will definitely mark this as one of the best indian restaurants i've been to, in a very long time. If i could give this restaurant a higher rating than five stars, I would. Lewiston battles a negative image but things are changing in its food scene. A number of restaurants opened over the past few years are starting to expand your dining experience there. I noticed that this restaurant was a new Indian cuisine option and town and decided to give it a try. When we arrived were pleasantly surprised how nicely appointed the restaurant was, with white table cloths and nice large windows on Lisbon St allowing in lots of light. The waitress gave excellent service and accommodated my friends dairy allergy with ease. We tried the appetizer assortment and it was of very good quality with nice dipping sauces. The Biriyani we ordered was well prepared and presented along with the Saag which was rich and creamy. They have a heat of scale of 1-10 and they don't hold back, so if you like hot food pick you number carefully, for the timid keep you heat level at 1 or 2. They had a modest beer selection and I hope they consider increasing local brew options beyond Shipyard. While I live half way between Lewiston and Portland and almost never consider going to Lewiston to eat, restaurants like Mother India are changing my mind. If you are in LA consider parking your car downtown and checking out this excellent option for Indian cuisine! read more
