As someone born and raised in this city I would never support this business. You can find local crafts by Alaskan artists nearly EVERYWHERE downtown - the 5th ave mall, Kobuk Coffee, or for Fur Rondy specifics the Fur Rondy store has all the same pins and better selection. Sans the lack of ethics behind this business, I would not shop here due to the lack of value and mark up of local items you can find at other places for less. To support Alaskan artists during Fur Rondy, check out the craft bizarre and market at Dimond Center that starts during the last week in Feb. Support local businesses that actually support local artists and their communities equitably (aka do NOT shop at Sara's!)

I love the different themes they set up around the shop, several of which work with the decor in our home. They have lovely scarves and jewelry, candles, socks and trinkets along with a small area with children in mind. Watching them saw, polish and shape the enormous jade boulders was amazing. The jade jewelry and items are beautiful and reasonably priced. Add to that the wonderful staff and a museum-quality series of Alaskan items and artifacts, and this is a must-stop when in the area. The future of this shop is in question, after the death of the previous owner in April, 2012. The shop is now being run by the daughter, but she is contemplating closing the doors. I seriously hope this doesn't happen and encourage everyone to show their support and go! Losing this place would be a tragedy.

Sadly, the owners passed away a while back, and we heard the shop would close permanently. But the next time we visited, it was open! The daughter of the couple who made and owned the shop had decided to make a go of it, at least temporarily, while they decided what to do. They still had really great jade stuff, though the best designs were no longer around, I guess her dad did those. I treasure the ones I was lucky enough to get when he was still around. However, there is still really beautiful stuff and they have added some amazing things like jade lamp shades - wow... Definitely a place you MUST go while you're in Alaska. I really hope it's still around now and for years to come. Stop by and get something beautiful, and keep this place in business!!!

The view is absolutely worth the trip up, and the Roundhouse has a really lovely viewing balcony wrapping around the whole building. It feels a bit like you're in a rough treehouse or loft in the middle of the mountains (despite the hulking ski buildings in the back). In terms of wares, the Roundhouse carries indigenous style jewelry, postcards, enamel pins, plushies, and much more depending on what your touristy self is looking for. Prices are a bit higher, but there is something for every budget, from post cards to one-of-a-kind hand-blown glass artwork. The museum aspect of Roundhouse consists of a diorama in the middle of the building, a timeline wrapping around the ceiling inside, and a few documentaries on TV display. If I remember correctly, there's also a display of traditional ski wear within the building. If you're in need of a keepsake and some information on local lore, I would recommend coming here for a glance around.
