I have previously tried driving lessons with 2 other instructors, and while I had good experience, I could not understand how to drive (like finding reference point to centre my cars, understanding direction of my car, how to overcome my blindspots due to my height, understanding the car mechanics, anticipating situations to be a defensive driver, and growing the confidence behind the wheels). Being introduced to Ellen by chance was the best thing that happened! First thing first, Ellen and I get along. Ellen has a friendly demeanor to make students feel comfortable and welcomed, allowing students to open up about their concerns. Ellen is very patient and encouraging. She took the time to understand what I needed and where my weak spots are to target and mitigate in the driving process. She has her ways of helping students to understand driving, put the right checks in place to follow all the rules and be a safe driver, as well as drilling into students' mind various scenarios which could happen during driving allowing the students to become a more defensive driver. In essence, she is transferring her years of driving experience and knowledge to her students in every single lesson. She also puts in a lot of efforts to each and everyone of her students. I'm SO pleased with the lessons; I like to ask a lot of questions because I want to know the WHY they recommend doing one thing or another. Molly was more than happy to explain it all and more than one time and in different ways if needed. She was very supportive and encouraging the whole time. Molly does have a heavy'ish accent and sometimes she'd repeat the word for me to understand - but that didn't impact the quality, effectiveness or efficiency of the lessons. It's unfortunate there is not a better outlet for this review…read more If anything, this is a warning to those in my neighbourhood wanting to learn to drive, and to do so confidently but SAFELY. A sole occupant of a car marked with Arbutus Driving School on its side cut me off while making a left turn out of the PetroCan gas station onto MacDonald Street in Kitsilano. He then gunned the gas and ran a red light and cut off another car, who was in the intersection in the middle of Broadway & MacDonald, mid-way through its left turn. Shocked at the brazenness of this older gentleman (no student in the car), I called the driving school asking to speak to the owner and turns out, the driver of that car was the owner. Hilarious. Cutting me off, fine, people make bad split second decisions, it happens. But there's no excuse for gunning through a red, swerving to dodge an on-coming car that's in the middle of its left turn and all while doing so with ARBUTUS DRIVING SCHOOL written on the side of your vehicle. That's just embarrassing to your company and plain dangerous. Please take more care driving through my neighbourhood or kindly gtfo.

He was able to make her feel focused and comfortable while learning to drive. He always showed up on time, was super courteous and my daughter learned a lot. At the end of each lesson, he gave a useful summary of things that went well and also told my daughter what she needed to improve on. The instructor was also able to devote extra time to skills that needed more time to perfect, such as parallel parking. My daughter is now a safe and confident driver who feels comfortable with city driving. Abutus Driving School prices were also very reasonable. I had shopped around for driving schools and found this driving school to be a good value.
