I really wanted to like this coffee shop since it's so close to where I live, but the past few times I've been here, the drinks have just been mediocre. Got the iced salted caramel latte today, but it didn't have much flavor. Didn't taste salted & didn't taste like caramel. Milky & lacked flavor and sweetness. It might depend on the barista making the drink, but all the other times I've visited I've also had the same experience. If you're in a pinch and need a pick me up, this place is ok, but if you're looking for quality drinks I'd go elsewhere. Service is otherwise good. read more

I was in the area and wanted to try Mostra Coffee, I've heard great things about it! Service was alright, not the best. The inside was nice, cute and clean :) For the drinks, so I just wanted a simple latte so I went with an Iced Caramel Latte instead of special drink such as their bibinkga one. It was not good at all, tasted like creamer and I actually could not finish it. I saw they did have housemade syrups, but I also saw Torani syrup on the counter as well and honestly it tasted like that... perhaps next time I'd order an extra shot to fix it. From the photo you can see it is very very light. Vietnamese coffee was okay as well, not the best and could definitely order this elsewhere. Had high expectations for this one. Mostra Coffee has been here for years and we finally decided to give it a try today. First off, the interior is very clean and gives a very modern feel to the shop. I ordered the ube crème brûlée latte which is torched, and my partner ordered the Vietnamese iced coffee. I felt the latte was pretty basic but you got a few notes of the crème brûlée towards the end. The staff was friendly and our drinks came out pretty fast. I really enjoyed the coffee we got here, unique flavors that blended well and had a comfortable vibe. Staff was so friendly and helpful. Very clean and inviting inside. But they were out of practically everything outside of a small menu. Couldn't buy beans, no extras for purchase while we approach the holidays. Someone needs to work on their orders and stock enough to last for the season. I know some of it is suppliers, but I still expected a little something to be available. Probably one of my favorite coffee shops anywhere. This fantastic coffee shop roasts their own beans and as a matter of fact, they're award-winning in that regard. I've been here a bunch of times and the service is always friendly. I also love buying bags of their beans, especially the barrel age ones whenever available. I've never not liked coffee from this place. There's also a good variety of the classic type drinks on the menu as well as some fun creations that they do that's unique to their background. I love getting the regular coffee, but on one of my recent trips I got one of their fun lattes where they use a blow torch to caramelize the top. Their roots or history or at least the way I found out about them is that they were closely tied to the craft beer world. A long time ago a lot of breweries that I loved were using their coffee in the beer they brewed. And as a matter of fact, I was one of their founding members of their coffee membership that combined the best of both worlds for me. - coffee and craft beer. This place is super popular now it seems and they discontinued their membership a little while back, but it was so fun while it lasted. They even held yearly beer festivals for a time. And the beers showcased were the ones that used their coffee. Good times I even got to see the current lead singer of Journey perform (Arnel Pineda) at the last festival I attended. read more

You always get the tiniest hint of what you ordered which is not overbearing. Today I got their Ube crème brûlée latte and it was delicious. I usually enjoy Mostra's coffee, but the service at the 4S Ranch location has become extremely frustrating. Yesterday I waited 20 minutes just to place an order. There were only two people in front of me, yet nine people stacked up behind me while we all stood there waiting. One person was making drinks, which is understandable. However, the second person--who was supposed to be taking orders--kept stopping to sort pastries as if there was no line at all. He would take one order, then turn around and continue organizing pastries, while the line barely moved. Standing for 20 minutes just to order a coffee is unacceptable, especially when staffing is present but poorly managed. The coffee may be good, but the service breakdown makes it hard to justify stopping by anymore. I really hope management addresses this, because the customer experience is going downhill fast. read more

TLDR - Mostra isn't what it used to be. If you're hoping to get an iced matcha latte in 4s Ranch, just go to Teaspoon instead. It concerns me that Mostra's management is just putting this location out to pasture, so to say. Over the last year or so I've noticed a decline in quality and service at this location. The past couple of times I've visited this location, there is a small whiteboard at the counter listing what they're out of, including popular items like matcha and their Vietnamese coffee. I visited today thinking I could get a matcha, but they were out. Based on other recent reviews, this is now pretty common. I went over to Teaspoon for my matcha fix instead. I know Mostra specializes in coffee drinks, but they were even out of decaf, which surprised me. If you come here, expect the bare minimum. The number of staff working seems to be reduced. There used to be at least three staff working at any given time, all with friendly vibes, but recently it's been one to two staff members max. Those that are working seem stressed out. It's really sucked the energy out of a locally- owned coffee spot that I used to love supporting. This situation makes me wonder what's going on with Mostra as a company. read more

Not a positive experience. Not in the area much and was looking forward to the visit to get a Vietnamese iced coffee. Simple coffee with adding condensed milk. Arrived at 9am and person taking the order was very dismissive about everything. Just said we don't have it and nothing else. Had to question it being 9 am and he shortly said we ran out and nothing else. I just said thank you and left. Also no food or pastries available - glass case was completely empty. The Chase: Amazing coffee, fast and friendly service, spacious location even when crowded This place is a go! The long: The people here are friendly, and they serve excellent artisanal coffee. The people behind the counter know their beans and roasts and communicate this knowledge in a pleasant non-condescending way. The coffee is excellent and they have win several roaster and barista competitions (I believe best area roaster in 2020). I believe they were also in 2024 awarded the best small business in San Diego. they deserve the accolades. To get back to the coffee, which is the reason that you're here, it really is very good and they know how to actually make the coffee, from an espresso even to their drip, the coffee is truly excellent. They also have beer, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that their IPA selection has an ABV below seven (which means you can actually enjoy the taste without falling over). I mentioned this because they also supply the coffee for many coffee stouts (a small collection of which is displayed in the back.) If you haven't guessed, I really enjoyed my experience there. I did not try any of the food so perhaps on my next visit I will add to this review. That said, if you were in the area and you want some damn good coffee this is the place. read more

I love the Filipino-inspired coffee flavors! The barista ringing us up (I wish I got his name!) was very nice, helpful, and patient. I kept asking for the Bibingka Creme Brûlée Latte and the Creme Brûlée Latte ICED and he reminded me both times that they're only served hot. There's clear text at the top of the menu that these drinks are only served hot (due to the way they torch the sugar) and I didn't see it haha! So thank you for being patient with me :D He offered that he could make me an iced latte with Bibingka cream but instead, I opted for the Iced Campfire Latte ($6.35) and it was delicious! My husband got the Creme Brûlée Latte ($6.35) and my sister-in-law ordered the Iced Chagaccino ($6.75). They are all so good and tasty. The place itself is very bright, trendy, and clean. They have a few tables inside for 2-3 people and there are a good amount of benches and tables outside. 5 stars for this location, service, and coffee. This place plays second fiddle to Compa which is less than 5 minutes away. The coffee is decent at Mostar and they open at 6am, which is a rarity for many coffee shops these days that are not massive chains. The staff at Mostra is nice however, offerings are limited. The pasty case is always empty and the overall environment is cold and industrial with very little seating. Coffee shops should be a place that grows and fosters community. That seems like an afterthought with this establishment. I walked in there today and they were literally out or 6 or 7 items on the menu and still no pastries. I'm not sure if I'm loving the quality of Mostra Coffee anymore. I've been to all of their locations and my favorite one has to be Bankers Hill because they make the drinks so well over there! I work more north in SD, and I've been to this location and the other in Carmel Mtn, and the drinks aren't made well. So consistency of the quality of the drinks varies across storefronts, unfortunately. For instance, my matcha yesterday was sad. It wasn't properly mixed as you can see the clumps at the bottom. I wish I took a picture of the bottom I don't expect a hand whisk, but I expect a hand mix with a spoon, lol. I watched him and he just mixed it by swirling the cup. They also don't measure their syrups or powders I noticed, all by eye. Their display also has very minimal to no items to choose from, it's always almost empty. read more

Stumbled upon on this coffee shop. We walked in get an espresso after lunch. Cool place and atmosphere, with an interesting custom espresso machine. When ordering, I specifically asked for a ceramic/glass, no paper cup, however the teenager said we only have paper. This ruined the whole experience. The single shot (in a paper cup) came slightly cold but with a nice foam and aroma. The flavor was ok and bold. My suggestion is if you are serving relatively higher quality coffee than chain shops have the ceramic cups on hand for real coffee drinkers, as an option.
