I too have a love/hate relationship with this place. As far as pet goods go, food, acessories, etc, they have good prices and you can generally get what you're looking for cheaper than at the big chain stores. Generally the people that work there are friendly and helpful. They're willing to let people get hands on experience with animals, which I think is important if you are looking to make an informed commitment to a new animal. As a locally owned business, I very much want to support them, but after a couple of trips in there, I just cannot as a trip inside always turns my stomach. Their small animals are kept in deplorable conditions. Over crowded, often with mothers and their young kept in too tiny aquariums with general populations (a big nono for gerbils, hamsters, and rats). They simply have too many animals, in various states of health issues (missing hair, covered in scabs) kept in areas too small for them, and clearly breeding indiscriminately. Rabbits and guinea pigs are also kept much to close together, though they seem to sell through them quickly (though not being separated by sex I shudder to think how many people have taken home a small animal only to welcome surprises later on). They sell exotic animals they clearly have zero knowledge of, like hedgehogs, ferrets and chinchillas, and rarely have them in adequate cages. Their hedgehogs are kept in an unsafe cage with multiple levels (they have poor eye sight, ramps should always have sides) and again, do not separate by sex (hedgies are capable of becoming pregnant/impregnanting at 6 weeks old) and again, keep too many together when they should be kept solitary. They have no heat source, and either an unsafe wheel, or no wheel at all. Ferrets are kept in what looks like a large enclosure, but it has no ramps or way for them to run and get their energy out, and a single tube as a toy/place to sleep. Chinchillas are also kept in a cage too small with an unsafe wheel. They have a gorgeous bird area built for the many birds they raise and sell, but unfortunately the birds are also kept overcrowded, and pick at and overgroom eachother to baldness. Puppies are your standard puppy mill pups. Gorgeous and sweet but ultimately over priced, and covered in poop. When trying to bring these issues to management (the owner) I was basically spoken to like I had zero brains in my head, and was told they do the best they can. When I tried pointing out they had many of the supplies and cages needed to improve the lives of the animals while in their care, I was told I simply didn't know how a business was run. My opinion is while they also don't know how a business is run, the owners also care little for the animals in their store, and the poor workers can only do so much. So, while they may have better prices for goods, I will be going elsewhere to purchase what my animals need, even if I ultimately pay more. My money will not go to support animal abuse under the ruse they are any kind of "experts". read more

I called and was able to get an appointment same day. Staff was very friendly I got to meet the groomer, and talked him through what her hair cut should look like. She was done in 2 hours, and it's the best hair cut I think I've ever seen on my dog! She looks great, and she came back to me in a very pleasant mood. I love this store. They have everything you could ever need for your pets, and their service is great. I spent 15 minutes on the phone talking with one of their employees (Elizabeth I think?) about the best food for our cat (who has some health issues), and she offered to set aside several small trial bags of the top food that they carry. This is a nice locally owned pet shop. They do sell dogs, and I assume cats, which is a turn off to me. I figure there are enough rescue critters to satisfy just about everyone. There are even purebred rescue groups, like for Labs, etc. With that said, they are knowledgeable and helpful. Most of the other local pet stores are gone -leaving mostly big box and chain stores. Those are impersonal and cold. It's difficult to get reliable service with the chains, too. MVP Pets is fairly busy, and there is a lot going on behind the scene. It may appear they are slow; yet the owners may be up to their necks installing ponds or something. This is partially a product of the other stores leaving. It is also because they are a good store with intelligent owners. I have been a customer of MVP for a very long time... almost 20 years? I used to go to the Tates Creek location, then the Bellaire location. They moved from there, and now they are located at Beaumont Circle, next to Liquor Barn. It's an easy location to get to - just a couple of blocks off the New Circle Harrisburg Road exits. They have been helpful with my bird, fish, and other critter questions. I don't want them to raise their prices, but their critter food prices are comparable to mail order. All pet food is getting pretty ridiculously expensive, but they have a good selection, and their prices are reasonable. I know that it can be rough maintaining fish tanks with a constantly changing population, so I'm not surprised to see a few suffering or dead fish in their tanks. Many arrive, in shipping, barely surviving, and it is sometimes a risk to put them in the tanks. I like this place, and now that I found them again, I expect to be a regular customer, again, until they move and I lose them... again. read more

Definentaly not good service AT ALL. Workers/employees are not very nice. The dogs have poop in their cages and are kept in awful condition. Every time that I am here I am worried to get the dogs out because i am scared that I will get dog poop on my pants because the dogs sometimes step in their poop. Sometimes, worse... Even eat it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The only thing that I like here is the open bird area. Every area with birds is WAY too overcrowded and some of the bird cages literally didn't even have food or water. The only cage that wasn't overcrowded had one bird completely alone with no food, water, toys, or anything lining the bottom of the cage. Literally a completely empty plastic cage with one bird in it. read more

This pet store is overcrowded and all of the animals appear to be in poor conditions. While the pet store claims that they support local breeders, they actually just support backyard breeders who are breeding poor quality, out of standard purebreds and mutts. These dogs are not health tested, temperament tested, or any of things you would get by paying the same amount of money to reputable breeders who are breeding responsibly. read more

They have been great in recommending tips when we had challenges and we have started using the groomer. It has been a wonderful experience. This place is so sad, please do not support this business. The conditions of ALL animals were very poor, including a very dirty and scared Persian cat ($2,000) in a small crate that continued to shake the entire time I was in the store. Reptiles are not kept in correct conditions and I highly suspect their knowledge on lighting and husbandry is not correct as well. The store gave an overall icky and sketchy feeling. Puppy's looked dirty and cramped in small crates with wired flooring. The birds all looked unkept and their cage had zero toys to play with, many had odd behavior compared to what I have seen in other pet stores. This place should not be open. read more

The worst pet store I've been to in Lexington. The dogs were kept in awful condition. Every single dog had poop in its cage. The conditions at a shelter are better than what they have for dogs at this store. Prices for super worms are insanely high. $8.00 for 30 worms. Everywhere else I've gotten them in Lexington they go for under half that price. Only good thing I can say about this place is the open bird area. We got our Goldendoodle puppy from MVP three weeks ago. The owners of the store and staff were so helpful in not only telling me all about the breed but they also helped me in picking out all the accessories we would need to bring him home. I was delighted that our fee included puppy's first grooming as well as a coupon for neutering. After picking out the puppy they took him and gave him a bath so he'd be fresh and fluffy for the trip to his new home. I can not say enough good things about this store - what makes them unique is not only their service to the people and pets of Lexington but also their continued support in the community; as I have seen their sponsorship's in events all around town. The store, and most of all the owners and employees, are a true asset to Lexington. Thank you for our new puppy whom we adore! read more

If i could give NO stars I would. Animals are not cared for here. Way to many animals per cage. The cages were dirty, no water, just a mess. The store was also a mess. Cat room had too many cats for the area and a cat box that was over flowing with crap. A poor red parrot, who was traumatized, clearly, had pulled out his feathers, sits in the front of the store with all the noise and people traffic instead of in a quiet area. Just heart breaking. DO not buy dogs and cats from this place as they probably get them from puppy mills. Good, reputable breeders do not sell to Pet stores, EVER. read more

We have been here numerous times and always have poor service. Today we were looking to add more fish to our aquariums. Three employees said good morning but never offered assistance. When I did ask for help the employee said, " we are busy in the mornings." To which my response was, "You're too busy to help customers?" He bagged up the fish I requested but didn't ask if I needed or wanted other fish. Another employee helped with the other fish. A lady that just started there was super kind to us and my wife and I are super appreciative of that. But when we got our dog we got home and learned that he had fleas. We learned about this as soon as we got home and bathed him. We have been trying all we can to help our pup out but with him only being 10 weeks. I have never been treated so poorly. I'm never going back here this is my second bad experience here. The first time I was in there to get my salt water tested and it literally took 2 hours for them to tell me what I needed to do for it. Left me following them around the store. Today I went in again for a water test, I swear I'm a nice person and I don't get mad often but they way they treated me today was god fucking awful. If you want a great place for salt water tanks take yourself to ocean wonders they are way friendlier and their prices are way better they treat their fish like family. I am so frustrated and disappointed with this store. I came in looking for some new aquatic plants and fish for my Home aquarium and I want to pull my hair out. The sales people could not tell me what type of plants they had or what kind of snails were all over the plants. They assured me someone more knowledgeable was coming but the girl who was supposed to know also had no idea. I cannot add mystery plants to my tank, I have to make sure the light requirements match up and I need to do my research on placement and care. What I saw in this store was truly heartbreaking. Although the conditions for many of the animals are horrible (several puppies shoved into a cage with metal grate bottoms and nothing else), it was the guinea pig cages that upset me the most. I would say they probably had 20. Each cage had several guinea pigs housed with huge rabbits. It is NOT safe for them to be housed together. Rabbits can be very dangerous to guinea pigs and they have very different needs. Some of the cages had zero hay and others a very small amount. Guinea pigs need fresh hay at all times to keep their teeth trimmed and their gut moving. This is not hard to figure out if you actually care about the animals. One water bottle for up to 10 animals. Imagine a tiny guinea pig having to crawl over a huge rabbit to get to the food or water. I'm not sure what kind of pellets were used as rabbit and guinea pig pellets are different. Several of the guinea pigs had visible ringworm. One hide per cage (some cages had no hides). I witnessed some of the guinea pigs fighting/biting each other. I'm used to seeing guinea pigs in pet stores with too small cages, but I have never seen anything like what I saw in this store. I would never in a million years have my pets in conditions like these. Instead of replying to horrible reviews with excuses, going on and on about your standards that clearly are not there, why don't you actually try to change things to make a better/healthier existence for your animals? read more

I couldn't believe the horrible conditions I found their animals in. The puppies in the back were in tiny cages behind a glass wall. The cages had wire floors and no blankets. There were two poor dachshund puppies shivering relentlessly. It was heartbreaking to see. I went to the store looking for rats, only to find about twenty of them cramped into a tiny aquarium. Males and females were mixed. If you're planning to adopt a female rat, it will mostly likely be pregnant. On top of the small mesh lid for the rat's aquarium was a cage of mice in the exact same conditions. So not only were the mice in horrible conditions as well, but the rats were barely getting any air into their cage. The cat room at the front of the store had several young cats from the Woodford Humane society. The smallest cat/kitten's eyes were almost closed from the gunk leaking out of them. She clearly has a bad U.R.I. The store was a wreck and employees seemed to be in the middle of unloading things. I don't know if they just moved to this Beaumont location but I know it's been a pet store for quite a while now. The problem with this is that it just made the poor animals even colder because of the door constantly opening and closing. I wanted to take a pet home, but I just didn't trust that it would be a well adjusted, healthy animal. I'm sad to write this b/c we've enjoyed going to this pet store with our kids to look around every time after we eat dinner at Bru Burger and we've even brought lots of out of town family in here every time we're in the area b/c our kid like it so much. We had a great experience there buying my oldest daughter's fish in February so went back on Sunday to buy our 4 year old her first fish. It took about 10 minutes to find an employee who would help us get the first and when we finally did, she didn't tell us any policy about what to do if the fish dies (apparently she was new). We were also not told this in February with the first fish. On Monday night (1 day after purchasing), the fish developed Ich (confirmed by my next door neighbor who is a vet tech). She said to bring it back to the store and they would be able to treat it. On Tuesday morning, the fish was already dead in the tank when we woke up. I brought it to the store and was treated with such disdain and disrespect. They said there was no way of knowing it had Ich and acted like I was stupid for saying this. I had my 4 year old with me, having just lost her first pet and was hoping we would be treated with kindness and empathy. But rather, both young employees were so rude and acted as if I had no idea what I was doing. (I let them know we already have one fish from there store who has been alive since February so am doing something right.) I didn't bring in a water sample which I was apparently supposed to have been told (wasn't told either time) and so they said they could credit my account, but would not guarantee the next fish. The water was contaminated now b/c the fish was dead in it. (Not sure how to get a water sample when I didn't know the fish was going to die but that's besides the point.) This is all over a $5 fish. I would love to support a local place, but will not be returning there after such a poor experience. I spoke to the manager to let her know and she was less than understanding. As it turns out, her daughter was the rude young lady. Customer service is huge to me. If you are going to treat a mom with her little girl who just lost her fish so rudely, I will definitely go out of my way to let everyone I know not to go to this store. We will gladly spend our money elsewhere. Sad b/c my kids love this place, but I cannot continue to support a place that treats others with disrespect and like they are idiots about fish. read more

I went in for an emergency dog bath. I will not return. They sell puppies. The puppies were very high-priced, and they looked too young to be fully vaccinated. Some of them were chi mixes, and chihuahuas are the second most euthanized breed. All the breeds that they sell can be adopted. read more

Was trying not to give this review. In Nov I purchased a brown labordoodle from MVP. The sign on cage said Labor-doodle and the workers described and showed me what she Mia would look like as she grew. There was a white golden doodle getting groomed. So I asked will she have curly poodle hair, their reply was yes. Will she be large , reply yes. So I took their word bc I was searching for an emotional support dog for my daughter. So I kept inquiring to why her hair is straight and she's not growing. Asked for owner to call me back bc of my concerns. I paid 1000.00 for what appears to be a mut. Took her to a vet they assured me she was not a labordoodle , had some lab but no poodle. So disappointed and hurt that I didn't give my daughter what she asked for. I give them poor scores for honesty and integrity. They just took my money and lied about the breed of my dog.i feel as though I've been scammed. Ripped off of 1000.00 Don't buy puppies from this puppy mill. You will make a mistake like I have done. I've still to this day have not received a returned call from owner, manager or sales person who sold me my mut. They could have at least accommodated my concerns with customer service and refunded me some of my money. Go to the humane society to save a puppy instead. MVP does not care about you as a consumer. I even discovered that their puppies are more than likely from puppy mills and NOT from humane societies where dogs need homes the most. I made a 10:30am Sunday appointment with Jim the groomer after calling the number online. I get there and the place is closed. There is no answer when I call -- how do you run a business without even a voicemail?? I notice the hours on the door are different than online, and the number is different. How do you run a business without updating your online info?? I call the new number, and again, no answer. I ask my phone for all Most Valuable Pets in Lexington in case I'm at the wrong one. Nope, this is it. Now I'm late, and have wasted time taking my dog there and back home. And, so far, no call from this Jim character to find out why I'm late, so I can't find out what is going on. Katelynn is a phenomenal groomer here! I have a Persian cat who hates to groom himself, so I have him professionally groomed every 6-8 months. Katelynn sheered and shaped him up with a modified lion cut so he is cut short on his body but blended and doesn't look goofy like other cat haircuts. On the way out I picked up an adorable harness for my dog that I hadn't seen anywhere else and some natural treats. Great selection of products and I'm very happy with the groom. read more

Went by out of curiosity and found the place to be very depressing. The rodents were unhealthy and had hair missing, the bird cages were grossly overcrowded and most didn't have clean water, the rabbits were crammed in a cage too small for one let alone two or three, they sell mix breed mutts for $800+ which is awful, the cats in the "cat room" were 7+ in an incredibly small area with water that was FILTHY. This place is despicable. It takes such a small amount of time to provide clean cages, clean water and proper care. This place should be ashamed of themselves. read more

I like that they are a family owned local independent business and I don't have to walk a mile just to get my dog food! I did go to this store 2 and 3 times a week. I bought a lot of things. I never seen the dogs or any other animals being treated bad or in dirty cages. They even had us use hand sanitizer before we held a puppy. If a store sells a dog purebred dogs they shouldn't be talked about. It a person and the family who makes the Choice of what bred they buy or adopt. People who live good honest lives shouldn't feel like they have done wrong for buying purebred. That's not right. I gave the store a low star rating for the way the owner (female) has treated me the last two times I been there. I love saltwater fish. I started my first saltwater tank two years ago. I'm at 7,000 dollars and 60% of that I spent at MVP. I ask two different questions on two different days and was just flat out made to feel like I was dumb for asking. I was told the first time that looking for cheap used lights then saltwater wasn't for me. The second time I was told to get a lawn mower. To much detain type all that. My point is I was made to feel I was cheap and dumb. And both times other customers was around. I'm not returning because they didn't care if I was a returning customer and spent some money with them. You shouldn't go by my experience there. You may love it. I know I did the first time went there in their old location. I was treated bad enough that I won't go back. I know that my returning customers at my restaurant was my most valued customers. And they remain that way to the day I sold. read more

Worst experience with any type of management in my life. They knowingly sold me a sick animal. I was told by two different employees that they would pay for the vet bills. I took my animal to the vet and there was a long list of life-threatening items wrong with her. Upon revisiting the pet shop, the owner told us that he was not responsible for what his employees told us and he would not pay any of the $200+ vet bills. He was extremely condescending and rude telling us things like "that should've been completely obvious" and "that's how it works in the real world". I wouldn't wish their service and attitude on my worst enemy. read more

The dog cages were disgusting As well as the fish tanks and the rodents housing.
