Im a reptile owner, I come here pretty frequent. I've never had issues the staff knows us and has helped us out with our snakes. More recently one of the staff members mentioned a Mexican King snake and we fell in love with her and took her home! If anyone is complaining about this place then they're just asking too must and just are miserable with themselves. Very disappointed. Recently moved to Lexington and hoping to support a local business that had good values but no- Birds wings are CLIPPED!!! Even full grown ones!! Only purebred puppies for insane prices when there's so many dogs and cats that don't have homes. The space for puppies was also super super small- and they didn't look in good health. Also had products that are unsafe for reptiles like plastic "heat" rocks and reptile carpet. Didn't even have information for the tortoises there that get huge and live a long time! Really unethical uninformative store. I was expecting that the store would be about providing the best care for the "most valuable pets" meaning your pets - but NO it means here's the most expensive pets and most expensive equipment (that you can get for less). Would not recommend and honestly horrified a store like this exists. read more

Cats walking around freely on the ground, children managing and running the place (literally was told that by the child manager in the store), when trying to adopt, was informed by another child that apparently works there that animals I'd pick out were hers and not adoptable. I bought my dog here. They were incredible. I thought the staff was friendly and helpful. In November, I brought my dog back here to get a groom because I trusted them. I said I wanted her to get trimmed, but to keep her looking like herself. They said ok, they would try. I left her there. I trusted them. I came back. I payed for the groom, the girl checking me out told me that they had done a good job and that she still looked like herself. I got a dog, who didn't look like herself at all, who had razor burns, and cuts on her body. I got a dog who was depressed, who shivered when the wind would run over her body. I got my dog back but she was so broken after this groom. They gave her so much razor burn, I had to take her to the vet when it started oozing puss. It had gotten infected. We had to give her two pill antibiotics (2 pills twice a day), as well as a spray on. If you love your dog, do not get them groomed here. I have so many regrets. She is just now growing back out to the length she should be. It has been terrible. I tried to reach out, we called multiple times and the manager was never in and never reached out to us! read more

Beware of this store. I visited a couple of times and was shocked at the condition of their overpriced puppies whose hair was matted in their own feces. There is an employee by the name of Jameson who will blow smoke up your pant leg but you can't trust. I talked to animal control about the condition of the pets and they told me they've had multiple complaints and have had to make many inspections. Stay away! read more

I have spent well into the four digits at this store. 2/3 of my small pet purchases were incorrectly sexed and now I am spending even more in vet bills. I have a prolific "female" Guinea pig that the staff even checked for pregnancy. That male impregnated my females, including one too old to breed. It's been an expensive week at the vet. I also bought a "DNA sexed male" parrot that caught the attention of our vet as being an obvious female and also exhibits characteristic female hormonal behaviors. Update: on the bright side, we have two newborn pups! On the negative side, I've spent several hundred dollars on vet bills with more to come. That's for the Guinea Pigs alone. This is one of the worst and shady pet stores. We had two abandoned kittens that we took them to the vet 3 times and had been trying to find people to adopt them for 3 weeks. Nearby shelter wouldn't take them so we asked this place to see if they could keep kittens there for adoption. The employee (first name started with an A) told me yes after asking the owner. Got there, spoke to a few employees and the owner, and they said they would call the vet to verify their medical history then give me a call back if needed, and would try to get them a good home. Next thing I know was the vet called me saying this pet store told them someone dropped 2 kittens in a box with a note at the store front, trying to verify with me if that was true. They believed me never would have done that because I spent $200 to get them medicines to try to get them back to health less than an hour before I took the kittens with their meds to this pet store. Good thing the vet said they took over the kittens now because they did not believe the twisted story these pet store employees told him. The way these people who owns and work at this place lied to me is disgusting. They already got two kittens and their meds for free so basically free merchandise for them to sell. They acted like they would treat them nice but did the exact opposite. Now I remember why I never set foot at this place for over 5 years for pet supplies. Last time was when I saw how they never cleaned the puppies' cages, so those puppies just rolled in their own poops and looked all sad. I can tell the employees and family running this small business really care about their animals. But I think the population has really gotten over their heads. Everyone loves seeing a little bit of everything, but the employees seemed stressed trying to keep up with everything, with lots of overcrowding in their cages. That said, seeing so many adorable animals was fun, even if it was over crowded. The staff was super friendly, giving us cute info on all their pets. I love the huge variety on pet products. I think this lovely business could be flawless with a little downsizing on the live pets. read more

Ok so, saltwater is harder I get that. I have maintained a saltwater tank for going on 7 years now. But you cannot leave stressed out fish to roam around in totally bare tanks with 0 places to hide. They have hired a new coral specialist who seems decently knowledgeable so I am hoping their coral selection gets better. Currently it's all over priced, and under taken care of. I literally sell better corals out of my biocubes at home for much cheaper prices. This could be a really good locally owned store but they need to hire experts and people who know how to take care of puppies/fish and not just a bunch of teenagers. (Not that being a teenager is in itself a problem, these guys aren't given much direction I feel like and just a little work goes a long way in a store like this). We have shopped here for many years and I understand it's under new management. My husband and I stopped in to look at fish, upon entering everything looked ok. as we stepped further into the store we found it to be the most filthy store (pet or otherwise) I've ever been in. There was feces on the floor and not just a little and the one sales person was more interested in playing with the birds than cleaning up. the kennels looked as though they haven't been cleaned in days!!! Not only was there feces on the floor but it looked as though the store hadn't been swept in a month!! Food and stuff all over the floor. I love this pet store. It is clean and they have high quality pets, fish and supplies. The young employees are well trained and knowledgeable. I love their bird corner with all the hand fed birds on perches. They have great cats and dogs from local breeders as well as reptiles, ferrets, bunnies, salt water fish, coral.... pretty much everything but snakes. I know that I am buying quality when I get pets or supplies there and I appreciate and like to support local family businesses. I've taken my dog here multiple times for nail trims and other things. I've purchased toys for him and the employees are always friendly and helpful. All these bogus post from people bashing MVP are the same people who stood up front and protested because they want to force their ideas upon others. The staff at MVP have been nothing but helpful and they helped me with my dogs allergy condition by helping me find the right diet for him. My fiance and I purchased a cat from here back in July as an engagement gift to ourselves. In early November, we noticed that he was starting to get sick and took him to his primary vet who informed us of the possibility of a liver shunt. We scheduled an appointment for him to get an ultrasound done, but the day before his appointment he started to get even worse. We rushed him to the vet who gave us the probable diagnosis of FIP. Unfortunately, even after taking him to the emergency pet hospital and keeping him overnight, he passed away. It has come to my attention that this was not just an unfortunate thing that happened to us, but an ongoing issue for DONNA SOUSA and MVP PETS. I will not stop until both are taken down. read more

PLEASE READ THIS!!!!!!! So my boyfriend and I were wanting to get a hamster as an anniversary gift. We decided to go to MVP pets as our choice considering they have amazing variety. THESE WORKERS DO NOT CARE ABOUT THEIR ANIMALS!!!! I decided to go with this adorable teddy bear hamster, and asked for help to get her out to meet her. I decided I wanted to adopt her, and they used a cardboard box to put her up. THEY DUCT TAPED IT SHUT. NO HOLES, NO NOTHING. NO BEDDING FOR COMFORT, NO FOOD TO CHEW ON. The girl worker never made us sign any paperwork, and just was like "do you have food and a place for the hamster?" That was it. I left the store with my hamster and boyfriend, both of us appalled. On our way home, I immediately opened the box so my new hamster can breathe. She was scared to death!! You think it ends there? NO. As she was trying to find a way to escape this thing they call a "crate", she ended up cutting the back of her heel against the rough cardboard box flaps on the bottom. MY HAMSTER WAS BLEEDING. DUE TO THEM BEING NEGLIGENT IN THEIR CARE OF THEIR ANIMALS. I will NEVER be coming back here, and I am going to find the main supervisor to find some change for these sweet babies!!! I went to MVP today and picked up my regular dog food. The store was so clean and orderly , they have moved things around to give you a wide open experience. My first thought was it didn't smell like a pet store. Smelled like any other really clean retail store (no chorax smell ). Animals of all kinds, in clean surroundings. My daughter was married last weekend and we boarded her rabbit and two budgies, blue and yellow in color, with MVP for the weekend. My husband called and asked if someone could trim the blue bird's claws just before we picked them up yesterday. When he arrived to pick up her pets, he was shocked to find that MVP had trimmed the rabbit's nails, both birds claws, and clipped both birds' wings. When my daughter picks them up this weekend after her honeymoon, she will be mortified. Her babies won't be able to fly around for months making it difficult for them to move around in their large flight cages. There is no excuse for this. I am posting to hold the employees at MVP accountable. At the end of the day, this can't be undone and I have no other recourse. read more

Hello, new fish owner and animal advocate here, I went here to get a few fish to go with my Betta, I don't know anything about fish hence why I was there asking (a quite stupid question I must say) but I'd rather the worker not make me feel stupid, ya know? Your purpose as a worker is to inform and sell, not make people feel like they're dumb. Plus a puppy Mill? Come on y'all, let's think about what these puppies/grown mommy and daddy dogs go through on a day to day basis; they poop, pee, sleep and eat in that same tiny cage day in and out. I can't hate all the way because I did talk to another guy and he was quite friendly and knowledgeable and they did have some pretty cool stuff. This store is heartbreaking. I went in for some dog treats for my dog and left empty handed and in tears after realizing there are puppies kept in overcrowded cages in the back. I asked to play with one of the larger puppies because he just looked so sad and wanted to play and I just couldn't bear to leave him in that overcrowded cage. They recently posted a video advertising bringing pets to birthday parties. in the video a bird from the store can be seen. This particular bird was upset one day in the store and the worker stated that it gets over stimulated-so you bring it to a kid's party? You also see a kid in the video violently hitting the ground several times next to a small puppy. Cue to the rabbit being miss handled by a child and jumping out of the child's arms to be chased. I know why my poor bunny died after a month now. Also, when I bought him the guy handed me a bag of pellets and said that's what he eats. A bunny's diet should be primarily hay. I have experience with bunnies and knew how to properly care for him. He was an angora rabbit, his hair was matted and they were using a bedding that got tangled in his fur. I'm just glad he got to live his last month in a happy environment. read more

My dog usually cries when I leave him but he was happy to leave with the groomer. I can't remember her name but she owns Rottweilers and was very sweet. I usually go to PetSmart because I live in Hamburg but I think that MVP is really worth the drive. My dog smelled better and had a cute bandana when we left. read more

I loved this place! I came here with my dog just to check out what is offered here. Not only did I get greeted instantly upon entering, but the staff was super friendly. I got to experience some cool tricks that the parrots knew how to do. Along with watching such a great interaction with a "store pet parrot" and one of their employees, Elizabeth. They're such a good duo. I absolutely enjoyed my time here. I didn't come here for any specific item, but I always let my dog pick out her treat. This time we opted for the discounted cookies by the register. But overall, this place is neat. And as much as I'm not a fan of puppies being sold in pet stores, the pups here looked very well taken cared of and super friendly and active. Come check this place out! read more

Horrific. The animals were all sickly, abused, neglected, and just in a terrible state. I walked out in tears. From the fish to the dogs, none of them had proper care. You can tell these puppies come from from mills too. I saw a gecko with a half rotted tail, fish that had no rocks or substrate to hide in, dogs that looked miserable, and sick finches. The puppies were all shaking, one was laying down with only the whites of its eyes showing and breathing in an extremely concerning manner. One of the employees seemed sweet, I see a lot of reviews about these being the kids of the owners, if true then I can't entirely blame them for the state that the animals are in but it was heartbreaking to be in here. read more

Recently purchased a rabbit from here and it was sick when I got it and ended up dying. They let me replace it with another and it also died. Will never be purchasing from here again. I cannot speak about any other animals they have but they do not keep their rabbits in good health. They also have them in the same cages as guinea pigs which is not recommended at all. Numerous articles from a google search will be able to tell you that. Use caution if purchasing a rabbit from here and also if purchasing a guinea pig from here. They did end up refunding me my money for the rabbit purchased but that is little compared to the money I spent taking both of them to the vet. This place is literally awful. One of the worst pet stores I've ever been to. I was just there and it's sickening. 4-5 large breed puppies in little tiny display cages. I would be willing to bet you money they're from a puppy mill. No respectable business displays puppies like that. Their reptiles and amphibians are in tanks all too small. They advertised small tarantula habitat as a habitat for reptiles and amphibians. Cohabitation is rampant. Cuban tree frogs with an adult water dragon and anoles in a 30 gallon tank. Guinea pigs and rabbits living together. In cramped conditions. Sick whites tree frogs. Looked my chytrid. Just gross. I encourage you not to spent a cent here. I will be contacting animal rights groups about this store. This place needs shut down like yesterday. Only thing I took pictures of was the whites tree frogs. Love this place! It has been a very long time since I have been to a pet store with as much diversity, let alone knowledgeable staff. They gave straight forward, honest advice on our aquarium set up and ideas, clearly have a relationship with the animals in the store, and are more interested in animal well being than selling them. It's not your big box store pet shop, they are managing a lot of different species in a small space, and not a corporate one. The animals seem well cared for. Not the "cleanest" place in the world in that you will get a better sense of "cleanliness" at a petco. You won't find a friendly Macaw learning words with you, conures you can interact with in the open air, reptiles that the staff are giving realistic advice on appropriate ownership, or staff that can tell you exactly how many fish you need of one species before you add another at any chain pet store. Would recommend for people passionate about animals and responsible ownership, willing to understand the challenges of keeping a menagerie healthy and happy in a public space. read more

I was a little surprised to see the low reviews on MVP. ( Yes, there are kids working there, but they are kids of the owners. They seem to know quite a bit about the pets.) My grand-daughter and I love to go over and look at the puppies and other pets, and sometimes play with them. The people were so nice when I kept obsessing over one that just didn't seem to get adopted; they would always be very nice about letting me play with her; I went back several times to check, and I was never pushed to buy. We have bought fish there, and rats; we met with success with both. The advice they gave on the fish was much more accurate than the people's advice at PetSmart. (Their fish were much cheaper too.) The cats, that are running around, live in the store. They are beautiful and very sweet ; my grandson loves to pet them when they are lounging in their hammocks. The cat facility , by the way, is very spacious; I don't know why someone wrote otherwise! read more

Great place. Beautiful inside. Pets are cared for and the open bird habitat is truly amazing and beautiful. This place came recommended by a co-worker of mine. Everyone there was friendly. We had a miscommunication about a return, when the OWNER went out of her way to call and speak to me and resolve the situation for me. It's clear the owners of this business are in this for providing great pets to great homes as well as providing excellent customer service. I have a love hate opinion of this place. I have been going here on and off throughout the years, since I was a teenager and they were then located in Tates Creek Center. I would go just to hold the birds, never buying anything. I never remember anyone being rude even considering the fact that they knew I wouldn't buy anything, maybe they thought that eventually I would buy a bird. I never remember puppies being at that location. Fast forward several years: puppies!!! They're so cute and tempting. One time I was there and a breeder told me that he inquired about selling his puppies there but he wanted to take them home at night and that wasn't permitted. Again, a random patron told me this. Last night I was there and spotted three cocker spaniel puppies that were just born in April... Oh my goodness!!! I'm a sucker for a cocker spaniel face. I asked if I could hold a girl. After holding him for several minutes, I discovered she was a he. How are you going to work in a pet store and not know a male from a female?! She had taken me in the small holding area and when she opened the door to the cage area, the smell almost knocked me down... Not to mention that the poor puppy smelled horrible too. I don't know what I was expecting since I noticed all of the mess in the small cage. How in the world will a puppy ever be properly house trained after it spends months in a cage?! Cocker Spaniels are commonly found in shelters. I think it's because they're so cute as puppies, but like any dog, they need love. They can be temperamental and stubborn and I can imagine spending their first months locked in a cage isn't of much help. My cousin runs a cocker spaniel rescue organization in Indiana, so maybe I see and hear more horror stories than the average. Even though this place is locally owned, I can't support it. If they insist on selling puppies, they need at least one person in charge of cleaning the messes immediately, rather than letting them lay in it. read more
