Mo' Willy is an iconic track that all should play at least once. Set your expectations as this is a Muni and you will have a great time. From the blue tees, this is a challenging course with plenty of elevation changes and some blind shots. A driver is not required on some holes as a long drive brings in trouble. Even with the lack of rain, the course is in good shape. Yes, there are a few rough spots but we are in the midst of a severe drought. When I've played here in the past the greens were fast and true. This time they were soft and slow as we received some substantial rain. As an Austin Muni there are no water jugs on the course so pack your cooler. There is Bev cart service and the 19th hole has some great craft beer options and the usual munchies. read more

If you've never played it, read the negative reviews, hopefully that changes your mind. The other thing, it's not crowded and they usually can get us out if we don't have a reservation. I've been playing Morris Williams since the early 70's & it's my favorite Austin course. It's a beautifully laid out course that both beginners & seniors will love. The fairways & putting greens are well taken care of by a well trained, knowledgeable, & friendly staff. read more

I have played this course regularly for the past couple of years and I'm always impressed by the state of the grass/greens, the great staff, and facilities. Hands down the worst course I have ever visited. Every staff member I came in contact with was rude. The condition of the course is abysmal. In just 9 holes, our foursome had 3 carts die on us, including the replacement that was brought out on hole 3. Hitting off the course was like hitting off of concrete. All the grass is dead and in awful condition. Spend the money and go to Kizer or Jimmy Clay. Do NOT waste your time and money at this course. read more

Unique course in that their golf is stand up quality but could also see myself going here just to hang out at the frozen marg sect and enjoy checking out the greens at 18. I am not a yelper by any means, in fact, this is my first yelp review I have ever done. However, I must make this review because it would be terrible golf etiquette if I didn't. Let me start off by saying that I booked a round of golf for me and a friend on Saturday June 20, 2020. A man answered the phone and said everything was good for me to play at 3:30 p.m. on the 22nd. Life was good, I was ecstatic to play at Mo Willy. When I arrive to the course, I check in, and the African American lady at the front desk says, "Sorry Max, I don't see your name here for 2 at 3:30p.m." I tell her that there must be a mistake. She shows me the computer and I do not see my name there. However, I see a person named "Maxin" at 3:30 p.m. for 1 player. I tell her that the guy must have misheard my name and put 1 player instead of 2. She told me that because the guy wrote 1 player that it probably wasn't me and it's a booked schedule so I can't get that time. I was a little peeved at this time, however, she realized that and made it right and said "I'll tell you what, I'll let you guys go and play right now if you make it quick and tee off." I was happy again and said okay great, let's do this. As soon as me and my friend are about to tee off, I hear "Maxin please come to the pro shop." My name is Max and they know that so I decided to still do my practice swings and get ready to tee off. Again, I here "Maxin, we see you come to the pro shop." At this point I'm thinking, both ladies heard me say my name is Max. Are they trying to call me? As I'm about to hit the ball and drive it 300 yards, I hear a lady say "Maxin you better not tee from that shot right there. Come to the proshop immediately!" At this point, I'm pissed. First you're going to rush me into a game after not getting my information down correctly and then screw up my tee shot when I'm about to hit. And who the hell is named Maxin!? I then walk over to the pro shop and this old white lady comes over to me and starts bitching at me because our girlfriends are riding in the cart with us and we have to pay an extra $7 a rider to do so. $7 doesn't phase me whatsoever, I just want to play golf at this point. Seriously keep the change ya filthy animal. She has the audacity to then say I can't come into the pro shop to pay for the extra riders without wearing a mask. I give her my credit card and then she says that I am in the wrong and that we can't tee off until they decide it's the right time and it could take over an hour since the course is booked. I am furious at this point. I then say, "I'm a range grinder member, please give me a token so I can actually get a few practice swings before I play on this miserable course." She then tells me, "You better not share your range balls with any of your friends." My buddy was about to just go home at this point. This was outrageous how rude this lady was. It took about 30 minutes until they called us out to tee off. This was after she walked outside the pro shop to check to see if I was sharing range balls with my friends. Mo Willy is a great course, but this witch needs to get fired. Apparently she has been awful and very rude to most of the golfers on the course. She should NOT be a customer service representative for Mo Willy. I felt bad for the African American women because she has to deal with that inconsiderate hag for 8 hours a day. If you look at all of the other reviews on here, you will see that everyone is complaining about the customer service. The staff is good, it's just that one white old lady that needs to go. Her time is done. Maybe she got divorced and is taking out her anger on all of us golfers? Either way, her time is done. I will never play Mo Willy again till the day I die because of her and will tell all of my friends to never play here. Go to Lions, Kizer, or Clay because the customer service representatives are super chill. As for the course, it's pretty fun to be honest. The golf course was in amazing shape for a muni and was an easy, fun layout. Unfortunately, our experience was tainted by the staff, who were incredibly rude to my partner and me. The first incident was getting angrily forced out onto the golf course by the man in the pro shop while we were still warming up. We had 20 minutes until our tee time. The second incident occurred because they have a strict policy requiring separate groups to play with each other which I understand. I play golf at the collegiate level, so I understand the importance of pace-of-play. However, in the middle of our round, the group playing with us drove ahead and started playing independently. They later told us that they just wanted to play alone -- not because we were slowing them down. No groups were behind us for a hole and a half, so my partner and I decided to keep playing at our pace. The marshall from the first tee approached us about 15 minutes later and yelled at us, saying we were breaking the rules and this course was no place for beginners to learn to play. He said this because we would occasionally stop, and I'd give my partner a few swing pointers. I explained there was nobody behind us for a while and, if there was, we knew to immediately pick up and move ahead. The marshall said he "didn't care" and told us to go catch up with our group. He didn't even allow us to pick up our ball. We politely followed his directions, but he continued to follow behind and watch us for another hole, making us very uncomfortable. In my opinion, this rhetoric and employee behavior is completely unacceptable and don't grow the game of golf. I would expect this for a private country club, but this is literally a city-owned golf course. We will not be coming here again. read more

This golf course does not have water jugs on the course. It seems incredibly irresponsible not to have water during 100+ degree summer days. When asked they responded "we couldn't keep up with the demand" so their solution was to eliminate water jugs entirely. Play Riverside they have water jugs every few holes. Austin has several good city courses and this is one of them. This course is a good value and usually in pretty good shape. The greens are a bit rough at the moment. We'll have to see how the greens and the course in general holds up once we get into our typical Texas summer. My preference is to walk and this course checks off that box. It can be a bit hilly in spots. There is a driving range on-site and a good sized putting green. Signage states that the driving range is 'irons only'; I think that is a suggestion as folks are out there striping their driver at least 100 yds I haven't had issues with the staff like some have reported. I am told that the "Fairway Cantina" has some pretty good food (tacos...!) but I have yet to partake. read more

Full service driving range. And the course has well kept fairways and greens with clean water stations spread throughout. What you would expect out of a public institution except for the part about equal access. You cannot book a tee time online until the association's buddies have been able to walk in or call in at 6AM for first preference. Fantastic course at a great price. I recently came out here with a few coworkers to play on a Saturday afternoon. We made our reservation on GolfNow and showed up about an hour before teetime. The course has a great driving range and pretty decent pitch and putt area. It is my understanding that the course recently completed a major renovation. Overall, the course was great. The only area of improvement would be the greens. About half the greens look like sections had a deadly disease that was taking over the grass. It made it quite tough on some putts. Most of the fairways are pretty narrow but they line up nicely against other holes so you don't have to worry about losing many balls. For $25-$35, I would highly suggest playing the course as you work on improving your game. read more

Decent course with a lot of blind corners and tee shots. A lot of approach shots require a preview before lining up. Not terribly long but the blind shots keep things interesting. There weren't many OB areas nor opportunities even to lose a ball. The greens were rough and slow. The pace was obviously slow for a Saturday afternoon, but it felt longer than it actually was. Good course, much more difficult to walk then ride (what course isn't?). This course is out by the old airport and while you don't have to be a long driver to score well here, you do need a little bit more in the line of shotmaking then at other muni's (Lyons, for example, where distance is more key). For some reason, this course plays "hotter" than many others in the area, literally. I have rarely played at Morris Williams when it was not blazing hot from start to finish. While this is nothing new in Texas, the shade seems more sparse on this set of 18 holes. One of Morris Williams distinct advantages is that it never seems full, and rarely seems even the least bit crowded in my view. Morris Williams is oft-overlooked by many Austin golfers, which makes it a great place to play when you want to avoid a crowd and try something a little different. Tip: the first hole is moderate in length and straight on - make sure you don't flub it up and take an 8. read more

I originally left this place a 2 or 3 right after the renovation because I had an inherent issue with the fact that the greens had leprosy but the clubhouse was state-of-the-art - didn't make sense to have a nice clubhouse and less-than-adequate golf course. However, over the past couple of years, this place has really turned around. The greens are getting better, the first and second cuts are actually different, and the course is refreshingly challenging compared to other Golf ATX courses in town. I play here at least once a week. It has become my go-to because of the obvious care going into the maintenance and care of the facility. Thanks, Mo Willy team! read more

Gave it another try after 2 years of staying away because of bad experiences with the staff being rude... nothing changed. Not friendly. Nobody will call this a "home course" because they make sure you dont feel welcome. Play at other public courses. Let this place turn into homes. The staff would appreciate it. read more

If you want to feel like John Daly on the tee box, try Morris Williams in the winter. Wait, check that. I'm going to revise to Tiger Woods, because feeling like Daly may equate to already having put a sixer of Lone Star away before even teeing off, with a 12er on ice in the cart. Add that to the nicotine buzz, and injuries could ensue. My point is that there is a LOT of roll, with the fairways being pretty bare and the ground being hard. I had the pleasure of playing a round yesterday (shorts and a golf shirt on December 29 - YAY for that), and hit two drives at least 330 yards, plus a few more in the 300 yard range. I'd like to think that it was all my doing, but in reality I was probably getting an extra 30 yards more roll than usual on some of those shots. Hey, it still felt good. Of course, this can also play against you...because if you start off in the wrong direction, then it's going to go for a WAYS in that direction. Even the greens were playing pretty fast yesterday, but they were in surprisingly good shape, especially considering it's a municipal course in the winter. Funny thing was, the player in our rag tag foursome (a buddy and I and two singles) who golfed the best was a 70 year old Taiwanese dude named Leo who would drive it about 200 yards every time, right down the middle. As Confucius says, "better to be straight and consistent than long and erratic." Figure on $30 with a cart, but you're good for $20 or less if you're walking, so it's a nice deal. Play can get a little slow there when the weather is nice, but it really just depends on the two or three groups in front you. If you've got 5 hacks teeing off before you and they're all walking, then settle down for a long day. Go back into the snack bar, ask for a plastic bag with ice and then fill it with beer (cash only at the snack bar, but not in the pro shop). Because, you know...beer makes waiting a little more enjoyable. And then you can morph from Tiger back into John Daly. read more

I don't normally leave reviews but I was very frustrated after my recent trip to this course. I enjoyed the course layout and maintenance but I was very disappointed with customer service. The starter was very rude to myself and the other member of my twosome. First he was rude when we were paying then he yelled at us over the loud speaker while we were teeing off about not hitting mulligans when technically I needed to hit a provisional drive because mine went out of bounds. I was very frustrated with his actions. We were also greeted rudely by the person collecting carts. He drove up to the 18th green as we were finishing our round and told us he was trying to close so we needed to "hurry it up". He then followed us to our car and stared us down as we hurriedly unloaded our clubs. This was completely unnecessary and made me angry. As a new homeowner near Morris Williams I was excited to have a new home course but after this experience I question wether I will even return. read more

Rewind to Mother's Day 2014. My mom flew down from Massachusetts to hang out with me for the weekend. She enjoys golf and suggests, "why don't we go golfing this weekend?" Although I am awful at golf, I thought, "sure, why not? What could possibly go wrong?" We schedule a tee time for 10am on a Saturday morning. This was probably our biggest mistake. Apparently, Saturday mornings are a really popular time to golf. Who would have thunk it? We showed up at the clubhouse and paid our green fees, which were quite reasonable at $26 each. They wouldn't let us share clubs, so my mom ended up renting clubs for $15. The guys in the pro shop were pretty rough around the edges. Not the friendliest bunch. After a 15 minute wait or so, our name was called over the loudspeakers and we hustled out to tee-off. Come to find out, we had been teamed up with two other guys. One guy who looked like a tall, lanky, Santa and his son. Both came equipped with some deep-fried southern accents. They did not look or sound like golfers. My mom leans over to me and goes "well, these guys don't scare me." After some introductions, I learned that they play at Morris Williams every weekend. Crap. We tee'd off and of course my mom's ball goes about 30 yards every time she hits it, and mine goes 250 meters in the wrong direction on most drives. I actually managed to tee off and hit my shin with the ball. I laughed it off, but was crying secretly inside. Thankfully my short game is decent. Our two friends were extremely nice and didn't talk bad about our less than stellar golf skillz (at least in front of us, haha). The other golfers, however, were not very happy with us. At one point, one of the staff members asked my mom to pick up her ball after the first drive if she didn't get it on the green. We ended up leaving after 9 holes which was the original plan anyways. TL;DR: The greens are very nice and the price is right, but this course is definitely not for beginners. Don't judge a book by its cover. read more

Played last weekend during their soft opening and the course is much better than it used to be. Blues and Blacks are longer by 300-400 yards, and greens are tougher, which are both welcome changes. Still a lot of dead grass in the rough, but fairways and greens were decent. Redesign on 13 is pretty cool as it offers the option for a cool approach before the pond. Club house is pretty nice now! Minimal merchandise and the food bar is run by Players (as is the rest of APL courses). Parking lot has been overhauled, and the range turf has been improved -- no longer rubs off on your clubs (I used to have green irons after hitting a bucket). All in all I will definitely be playing here over some of the other courses around Austin that either seem to have given up on course maintenance entirely or are simply inconsistent. I'm starting to think it's impossible to have a decently maintained municipal course in Austin (Seriously, MoWill and Kizer are it right now), but I have my fingers crossed. read more

One of my favorite places to play golf for cheap. David works in the clubhouse and always treats you with a smile and kind words, even if your golf game sucks. Trust me I know first hand. I'm a high price hooker! Course is well taken care of and the locals are friendly. The track layout is fun and most holes have slight elevation challenges. Mueller development is next to the course and you can hit up some good food trucks around the area. Btw, if you happen to play here and find titliest golf balls with "Jedi Knight" on them. How did I forget about this place? I played here with a buddy about 6 years ago and hadn't been back since yesterday. What a great deal! We went out (a twosome) about 4:30, and teed off at 5:15ish and were able to complete a round before dark. The greens were in excellent shape for a muni and the pace was better than expected. I was very impressed with the overall condition of the course. My only complaint? All the freaking flying projectiles because it was crowded with people that don't know what they're doing and just hacking away. Look at me, I'm an elitist golfer ;). Anyways, I guess it is to be expected since it a popular muni. The best part? It's less than 2 miles from my house and it only costs $12 if you're walking ($20ish if you need a cart). If you're looking for a decent course with reasonable green fees near central Austin, give the Willy Mo a shot. read more

Morris Williams is loaded with history. Austin is a big-time golf town, and this course is one of the most iconic ones we've got. You need to read all of Harvey Penick's books if you haven't, then you'll see what I mean. If you ask to see the manager, be polite; you're talking to a 14-time city champion. That guy who's picking out beer cans you left in the cup holder, could be a 4-time city champ. The people who work and volunteer there do so with a sense of professionalism and passion that's hard to find these days. And good luck breaking 100! It's a tough course. I consider Morris Williams to be my course. It's nearest to me, is usually in decent condition, has a driving range, and the price is fair. I like the course's new club house and renovations. It all looks very nice. I agree with some previous comments about a lot of dead spots in the rough. But we are in the middle of a long drought so whatever. I need to learn to play on the fairway anyways. So I am pretty much solidly happy with the course. My only complaints at the moment which I thin could make my experience better: 1. Last time we were there the course Marshall pretty much followed our foursome around the entire time except for the last 4 holes. Go away, douche. 2. They don't accept tips for card payments at the club, so I could not tip the nice young man at the snack bar 3. Cheap score cards! I want a hole map! Ok thanks BYE! read more

I never played this course before it was renovated so I cannot speak to that. We played this course a few weeks ago and despite all the rain we've had, the greens were already burnt and in rough shape. I know it's a public course, but their customers are clearly not helping take care of this course. This is very annoying for me as a fellow golfer. No one seems to fix their divots or ball marks. They don't have a starter, but they do call people to the tee because of how busy they are. It has always been packed when we've been here - even when I've only been on the range. I think they could really benefit from having a range on the course as play is VERY slow. Pricing is reasonable for the course and you can get a large bucket for $6. read more

Played twilight special with a friend here around 6PM on a Saturday for $20 including cart pp. It was pretty freaking ridiculously hot outside (we teed off on 1 probably at 109 degrees outside). Managed to finish 9 before the sun went down. The course is a nice challenge. Front 9 has a mix of pretty hard uphill/downhill dogleg left par 5s, some easier (but still challenging) par 3's like the over the lake shot from above a hill. The greens are managed nicely, I didn't see too many holes or weird lump y spots. I wish the carts had a bit more slots for tees and balls, and our cart seemed to be running out of juice around the 4th hole. Rate of play wasn't bad. The roughs are REALLY rough, because its pretty much rocks and dry dirt in the roughs. If you're out there, good luck shooting around. Stay on the fairway as much as you can. The only complaint I have is the course layout. Some of the earlier holes like 2-4 are going in opposite direction of the later 7-9 holes. Its almost sort of dangerous to see yourself tee off and carts are driving around pretty close to where you're aiming to shoot. I mean, its a compact 18 course, but they might have done better in designing the course by not putting the greens so close to other holes. read more
