Yayayayayayayayayayayayayayayay!…read more I found a place that sells healthy & reasonably-priced salads to go right here in W1! I thought I would never see this day... Goodge Place Market is a tiny food market in the likes of its bigger siblings like Leather Lane & Whitecross Markets in Easternish London. Here they only have a total of six stalls, but all of them serve delicious foods: - Burritos (Freebird Burritos) - Salad Boxes (£ 4.50 per box) - Thai food (Simply Thai) - Falafel (Hoxton Beach) - Köfte wraps/sandwiches That's really all I could've wished for...I feel so blessed having discovered this market!

By the time I'd reached Goodge Place, I'd walked in and out of more than a few chain shops, unable to find something which ticked both the 'affordable' and 'healthy' boxes. Then I came across this market. I spied a salad stall, and decided to go for that. After all, it was pretty decently priced at £4 for a large box of sundried tomatoes, cous cous, aubergines, beans and other vegetables. To my surprise, the salad also came with a thick chunk of Turkish bread, which made it even better value for money. There's an assortment of other stalls here as well - Mexican, Thai, falafels - and they're here Monday to Friday.

A relatively new stall on Whitecross Street serving (as you'd imagine) -- Bibimbap wraps! And…read morebubble tea. There are several selections of wrap: steak, bulgogi turkey (will go back to try that), vegan, etc. We popped in here after our Salad Kitchen plans were foiled (burst pipe!) -- this stall is usually right across the street from SK, so here we go. The cute hand drawn menu drew me in, as did the smell of bulgogi...mmmmm. The good: Fresh wraps! Interesting composition! Big! Huge portion of the steak wrap...it felt like a burrito. 7.50 might seem steep but the quality of the meat was high and it was made fresh right in front of us. Very good value. The maybe-not-so-good: The ingredients are wrapped in nori (seaweed paper and then wrapped in actual paper. Unfortunately, they are super messy to eat, unless there is some trick I am unaware of. Foil might be a better choice? I don't know but ish was everywhere, I was glad to be with a close colleague and not with those I would need to look proper in front of! The bubble tea- meh. It was just sitting up on the counter (I thought it would be made fresh and these were just an example set of teas) -- and I don't know about you, but I don't really want milk tea that's been sitting for a long period of time, you know? Plus they mixed boba with the jelly balls, I hate the jelly balls. I wanted all boba. This is a pretty big thing with bubble tea -- so I basically didn't like mine at all. I would skip it next time return. Overall, a solid little spot - sans the old bubble tea. The wraps are nice, I'd love an option to get the ingredients on a salad or in a bento box type thing, for ease of eating. But the goods are fresh, and that's the most important thing. *open with weekday lunchtime market. *cash only.

Clearly, this is not a good spot for a first date. This thing is just very difficult to eat "on…read moreroute" and that's I guess the idea behind the street food trend right? Eating on the go & stuff. BUT...this "thing" aka wrap aka bibimbap is delicious. I went for the bulgogi steak, and to be honest, I could stand next to this steak being cooked all day long. 7£ is well, not cheap, but you'll be fed for a few hours, trust me :)

Now, don't be fooled into comparing this London incarnation to the 2 famous Philly Cheesesteak venues because those 2 spots are tourist traps. You want to compare this to the 'hood joints where you get your sammiches & these guys are well up to scratch!! The meat is in abundance & while I'm not so sure these are authentic Amoroso rolls, they are pretty darn close. Things your cheesesteak should be...Cooked using water - yup, oil is not used in the hoody versions; have a mouth-watering smell of flavour when you unwrap it. Hot, flavourful; meat, cheese and onions should become one unit of deliciousness. These are defo delicious but didn't have the steam aroma when I unwrapped it & they're cooked using oil but were not greasy - thank goodness. Original cheesesteaks may be cooked with mushrooms or hots and the ketchup and/or mustard are added before the meat goes onto the roll. These guys don't offer those varieties but I assure you, these are darn good versions of my beloved Philly Original. I noticed they're offering the Philly pork sandwich so I'll be back to sample that too. Well done guys, very well done! P.S. If in the future you can master the Philly Cheesesteak Hoagie, you'll get an instant 5 Star review.

So I was quite surprised when I saw Liberty Cheesesteak in the listing of places at the Yelp Red event. Immediately I started Googling and found out that a) they looked like some tasty cheesesteaks and b) that I wasn't going to be able to try it until at the Yelp event. My other half was able to try it out though before the event and was suitably impressed. I was so excited to try and eagerly went for my cheesesteak taster and thought, meh. It's fine but a bit dry or something. My husband though insisted it was just because of the making-ahead-bulk-nature of trying to feed eleventy million hungry Yelpers at once and that it was better fresh. So today I hopped on a bus at lunchtime to go to the Mayfair Market at Brown Hart Gardens. Never had been there before and I was impressed with the location - up a flight of stairs, but loads and loads of seating and generally relaxed, with a handful of food choices. Of course for me there was no choice, just meeeeaaaattttt. I found the tiny stand and determined that no one was queuing to order, and eagerly placed my order for a half with onions and cheese whiz. There were about 10 orders ahead of me but the line cleared quickly and I soon had my sandwich. There was a small mix up and I ended up with a whole instead of a half. Such mistakes are fine by me! I was rewarded for my persistence. The meat was well seasoned with a nice peppery taste, and the Italian roll soft but chewy in a nice way. The onions were soft but not sweet, and the whiz was savoury and salty and unhealthy tasting, just like I wanted. 2 tiny niggles were that I had a couple of pieces of meat that could have been trimmed a bit better - but I'm a complete fuss pot and no one else would probably notice. And I would have liked more cheese. But I always want more cheese, and I'm sure if I asked for heavy on the cheese next time that I wouldn't be denied. Definitely better than the cheesesteak I had in Philadelphia from Geno's. Now to just figure out how to follow them around and be a cheesesteak groupie without seeming like a weirdo...

Generally I like small, family run places that look a bit haphazard and thrown together (much like…read moremy own family's business). Sadly this is not one of those. This place is just rubbish, not in a 'so bad, it's good' kind of way. Just not good at all. Arrived for a group dinner not really thinking about what to expect, but you know... expecting a cool Moroccan place. Especially since this street seems quite Moroccan influenced with grocery stores and shops selling traditional goods. But this establishment does a very good impression of a grotty kebab shop. Kind of a dive, definitely not somewhere you bring anyone on a date, or at all. Inside is bare and old fashioned and they had to turn the radiators on because it was so cold. Upon entering to see my friends, instantly my morale hit the floor as the place is so uninspiring and depressing. They were out of half the items on the cheap, plastic laminate menu. Basically you could have tagine, or... tagine. The service was slow, bordering on the ridiculous, as two of us got our food and the rest half an hour later. Everything came in drips and drabs, as if the chef was very slowly making one dish at a time. My vegetable tagine was totally overcooked and my chips undercooked. Asking everyone else how they enjoyed their food illicited blank stares and 'ummm it's okay'. All I ate was some warmed up pita bread and overdone carrots. Going to a little hole-in -the-wall place like this, you hope to find amazing food that you can tell all your friends about and Yelp it to the point it becomes totally popular and therefore uncool. But no, the food, much like the exterior and interior, was bad. I couldn't even summon up the energy to write a funny, cool, or useful review. Consider this a public service announcement.

In a word? Meh…read more Depending on how hungry you are, you could have two perspectives on this place. 1) Quirky, rustic and authentic OR 2) Understaffed, slow and bordering on being an overstretched local. I wasn't massively hungry, so I was in the first school of thought about this place and very open-minded about the possibility of unearthing a local gem. We (the gang of Yelpers who were here for the latest CMYE - Around the World in 80 Meals event) started with lovely warmed pita bread and an eggplant spread (unfortunately I didn't catch the name of it). Yum. The spread was so full of flavour, I could've eaten just that alone. We also ordered potatoes with a harissa sauce on them, that were far, far, far too spicy. Think the kind of spicy that overtakes and negates any other flavour in the dish. The kind of spicy that makes you urgently reach for whatever drink you have in front of you (in this case, a very refreshing glass of moroccan peppermint tea). Bad times. I ordered a lamb tagine with couscous for my main and was pretty excited about this, as I'd never had tagine before. The tagine arrived piping hot and the liquid in the pot was still bubbling, like it was still cooking. I hate eating super hot foods (goes way back to burning the roof of my mouth eating pizza when I was a kid), so I waited about 10 minutes for it to cool down. The lamb was nice and tender, but the vegetables was very overcooked, to the point of being mushy. The broth was okay, but didn't have the depth of flavour you'd expect from such an earthy dish. In all honesty, I'm voting for a do over in my first tagine experience. I'm erasing this tagine from my mind and have just become a tagine virgin again. Oh yeah - BRING CASH! They don't take cards and the closest cash machine in the evenings is a 5 minute walk away across from the Portobello Market building.
