We had a take away from here and the food wasn't bad. Felt a little awkward standing among the diners waiting to get our food though.

I finished off with the pistachio kulfi which the waiter informed me was homemade, it was delicious and my mum declared it 'magnificent'

Well this has to be the best curry cafe I've yet found in Edinburgh / Scotland…read more As with all such establishments, the decor is functional - you come here for the authenticity of the food. It's always a good sign when a curry cafe has Nihari on the menu, as not everywhere offers this slow cooked dish. I try to be a traditionalist wherever possible though so, having arrived late afternoon, I wasn't going to have what is considered to be a Breakfast / Morning curry. I'll head over next time for the 11:30 opening to try the Nihari - gives me another excuse :-) Today I went for a dish that has become a staple in Pakistani food culture, Haleem. Adapted hundreds of years ago from the original Harisah recipes which were first documented in the Middle East sometime between the year 900 and 1000, Haleem is now prepared and enjoyed in Pakistani family homes and restaurants all over the world. At just a fiver (currently) for Haleem and a hot, buttered Naan, this medium spiced dish is not only very tasty, but is also superb value. Today I had Beef Haleem. It was delicious. The dish is prepared with Beef, Wheat, Barley and Lentils (plus spices) and it is slow cooked to such an extent that the beef completely blends into the other ingredients so the dish becomes a thick sauce "curry". Tearing off a corner of Naan and dipping it in, it tasted fantastic. The Marhaba Kitchen is a proper curry cafe and the owner / chef could not have made me any more welcome. Next visit - Nihari time! :-)

There is some seating outside but plenty more within. Food came quickly, service was friendly. Prices, as noted in other reviews, are very low... something on the order of £5 for a heaping bowl of rice and chicken. The food was delicious- I was quite hungry and it was gone in minutes. It filled me up completely and I was very satisfied. Embarrassing moment when we found out they are cash only... but they let us duck out to a very near cash machine and come back. Thanks! I'll be back for sure to try some of the other items on the menu.

The food was wonderful, and such great value! He told me that I should choose what I thought was best, and by the time I got to the front of the line they would be out of it, and they would apologize, and they would suggest something else wonderful. He was right, that is exactly what happened, I and got a fabulous meal. Friendly staff, great food. A bit hard to find (behind the Mosque on Potterrow, and then around the back of the Aroma Cafe), but well worth the search. Do not expect starched white table cloths, but the staff is super friendly and we loved it. We will certainly be back the next time we are in Edinburgh.

The décor is very plain, with white walls and paper tablecloths, but somehow it works, and the cafe feels very light and airy. Set up as a social enterprise by a Sikh women's collective, it's comforting to know that, by enjoying tasty curry, you are also supporting a very worthwhile community initiative. This place has a refreshingly different (and dare I say it, more authentic) atmosphere from a typical Indian, and is definitely somewhere you should check out.

It's a nice little venue, bright and with a relaxed cafe/diner feel. It feels like stepping into someones kitchen and being served some wonderful home-cooked food. I had a chicken curry wrap and my friend went for the fish curry. Both were great; cheap, authentic, satisfying comfort food. It was a nice size for lunch and so we had enough room for dessert. I'd *definitely* have the gulab jamun with mango ice cream again. Service was maybe a little bit too relaxed and so wouldn't have been great if we were in a rush but given the homely feel I didn't mind too much. I will happily come back to try some more of their offerings.

This has nothing to do with the quality of the food (which is excellent), but it definitely brightens up my day. I've been getting take-aways from the Clay Oven for years. We (as a flat) used to get the banquet for two between four of us. You get (wait for it): Chicken Tikka Massallam; Lamb Bhuna; Mixed Vegetable Bhaji; Alo Gobi Massallam; Pilau Rice (2 portions); Sultana Nan; Kulfi. Yeah, that's for two people. So unless you've a huge appetite, this works out at just shy of £6 per person for four (£22.95), which makes it really good value. Otherwise it is one of the more expensive take-aways. Top tip: Ask them to swap the kulfi (a sort of weird Indian frozen dessert) for another naan. We've never had a problem doing that. Unless you really like kulfi, you weirdo.

It is quite small inside, but instead of it feeling cramped, it feels warm and cosy. The decor inside is authentically Indian with Indian music playing in the background. The Clay Oven offers a wide selection of authentic Indian cuisine on its menu, with a good vegetarian choice as well. I had the Chicken Pasanda which was on their specialities menu and it was absolutely delicious as it was cooked fresh and the chicken was full of flavour - yum! It was very well priced too at under eight pounds, and it was a decent size with lots of rice which was also cooked perfectly. The Clay Oven also offers set menus which cost around £15 per person and include kebabs, nan, rice and a desert. I found the staff very friendly and accommodating. The Clay Oven also serves takeaways which are always cooked very quickly, and they now do home deliveries which is incredibly handy if you want a delicious curry an don't want to walk for it. Definitely The Clay Oven is the place I am going to when I next fancy a curry.
