Good riddance to Bananas. Hated that concept. Welcome back, Morgenstern's! First time in since they reopened and things are pretty much the same - surly employees, high prices, amazing flavors. (No samples!). A friend and I shared a triple dip with apricot minneola, cardamom pear gummy, and hojicha hazelnut. All were fantastic, with slight edge to the cardamom and hojicha. Still 5 stars.
Hong Kong milk tea ice cream... it literally tastes like someone froze the HK style milk tea I grew up drinking!! Morgenstern's reopened at their Bananas location in the LES with a mix of old favorites and new flavors, and I've been eyeing this HK milk tea flavor for so long (still have no clue why it's listed under "Caramels" lol). My favorite Morgenstern's flavor ranking update: 1. Hong Kong Milk Tea Officially my new top favorite, surpassing salted pineapple egg yolk. The tea flavor is so strong and authentic. If you like hong kong milk tea, you need this one! Pro tip: pair it with viet coffee. This combo reminds me of yuen yeung (hk milk tea coffee). 2. Salted Pineapple Egg Yolk Forever one of my all-time favorite Morgenstern's flavors. I thought I'd never get to have this again after they closed. It tastes so much like taiwanese pineapple cake. Sweet, salty, and buttery. 3. Vietnamese Coffee Probably the strongest viet coffee ice cream I've had so far. More bold and bitter compared to most coffee ice creams, but the condensed milk balances everything out well. 4. Banana Mocha This reminded me so much of korean banana milk mixed with coffee. I'm already biased because I love banana + coffee together. It's on the sweeter side with the fudge melts in. 5. Hojicha Hazelnut Another new flavor after they reopened! Don't expect super rich hojicha intensity though. It leans more milky, but I loved the crunch from the hazelnuts throughout. 6. Olive Oil Chocolate Orange (honorable mention) No words needed. I am down for anything orange + chocolate. PLEASE BRING THIS FLAVOR BACK.
Came here on a Saturday night and it was PACKED. They don't give free samples, which was a big turnoff. I tried the Hojicha Hazelnut, Rockiest Road, and Hong Kong Milk Tea. The last one was my favorite because of the strong milk tea flavor. Rockiest Road was also pretty tasty, even though I'm not the biggest chocolate fan. I was most disappointed in the Hojicha Hazelnut. You can taste the hojicha flavor but they didn't really blend it in with the hazelnut. It was just hojicha ice cream with hazelnuts in it, so I didn't love it. I'd love to try their other flavors, but since they don't give free samples, I'm pretty discouraged from coming back. Hojicha Hazelnut 6/10 Rockiest Road 8/10 Hong Kong Milk Tea 9/10
I don't think I've been to their old location before, but I came to the new store this time purely to try out the Hong Kong Milk Tea flavored ice cream. I saw other reviews praising how genuine it tastes to an actual HK milk tea. When I went on a weekday afternoon, it was quiet with no lines and only a couple of customers eating inside. When I ordered the HK milk tea, the staff would take out the container and squeeze some condensed milk (?) onto it, mixing, before scooping it out for me. I didn't expect the ice cream to require additional steps after ordering. I wonder if this was done because of a new batch or they find that mixing in condensed milk into the mix or after churning will affect the texture. I guess I can see how mixing condensed milk into solid ice cream would create a creamy rich texture. It's still a lot of manual labor for staff. Flavor was disappointing. It's not a bad flavor. It just wasn't HK milk tea. They categorized this under caramels, and I completely understand why. It tastes more like caramel than milk tea. I'm curious if they added caramel syrup or what led to that flavor. The milk tea comes in very faintly in the background and aftertaste. It kind of tastes like Japanese or Taiwanese bottled versions of HK milk tea, which is faint and sweet. I was looking for something deep and strong. If they had used evaporated milk then hopefully slight savoriness too. Since they added condensed milk before serving, I'm assuming they're going for the version with condensed milk instead of evaporated milk. That version is still authentic but it also means the tea flavor is expected to be way more intense due to the higher ratio of tea. I also didn't like how my lips felt oily after a few bites. Not sure if this feeling is specific to the HK milk tea flavor or to Morgenstern's in general. I don't like how we can't sample flavors. I think limiting to two flavors or something is better than none. Similar to what other people said, their flavors aren't plain vanilla type of situation. Some people might not have an idea of what certain things taste like or whether they'll be ok with a certain combination. They only have the flavors listed out on the menu (admittedly large letters) on the wall, but I think visuals affect appetite too. Even though I was interested in multiple flavors based on the names, I didn't want to order more than what I came in for, because it felt too risky without samples (limited appetite yanoe). I'm so risk averse that I think this policy makes me not want to come here again. I don't like the seating. They're diner vibes facing either the outside window or a counter (not the side with flavors). The problem is how the seats are 1) stationary bolted to the floor, and 2) seats are on a ledge that is a step up from the rest of the floor. I can imagine someone getting out of their seat and tripping because they forgot they were a step higher. There is barely any space behind the stools for you to get up and orient yourself before stepping down. Otherwise, I don't like the seats being stationary because of the way they're spaced out.
This ice cream shop is so cute and dare I say--could rival the NYC favorite, Caffe Panna. Their menu offers so many unique and well made flavors, with many drawing inspiration from Asian ingredients. They also have lots of fun toppings, such as condensed milk, rhubarb, and pandan! We got their Concord Grape Yuzu and Hong Kong Milk Tea and both ice cream flavors were so good. They were rich, creamy, and the flavors stayed true to their names. Would love to come back to try their other flavors!
Huge fan of the praline hazelnut flavor ( I don't remember the full name). Place is a bit small so can get packed however seats become available fairly quick.
The staff is great here! They do a great explaination of the flavors. The ambience of the place is always busy with a side of a vintage ice cream parlor. I do think this place is hyped up. The flavors are subpar, nothing memorable. I wouldn't comeback again! I found their ice cream to be a little too sweet. And there's also no samples!
Went to try the Vietnamese coffee flavor ice cream and it tasted pretty good!! Will come back try the Pandan strawberry flavor next!
Fairly interesting flavors (available in soft serve and by the pint) Came in the winter so was not too crowded. Some seating available inside but not much standing room if there's more than 10 customers inside.
Just off the Boweryis this quaint little shop for what I thought was ice cream. What used to be their ice cream is now their non-dairy soft-serve. Honestly, when I ordered it and tried it, I did not know better. It was rich and chocolately, even creamy, I dare say. It was only after I dug into my cup of chocolate goodness that I read up on this place. Live and learn.

This place is a fail! Why did the owners get rid of the original ice cream shop? There use to be a line going around the block. Now they have soft serve and the flavors are not great. We had the midnight chocolate and salted peanut butter. We had to throw away the chocolate and barely finished the peanut butter. Bring back the old shop! The server was not friendly.
I love Morgenstern's, and I've been eating their ice cream for years now. Naturally, when they introduced Bananas, I was pretty excited to come try it. We finally got around to it tonight, and it was relatively busy inside the shop for a Thursday evening (good sign). When we stepped up to order, we inquired if we could sample the flavors. The server said "No", which is totally fine because we had our minds set already, but it was in a condescending tone. Sure whatever, we say "Okay, that's fine" and order anyways. Like other reviews mention, service leaves much to be desired- no smiles, rude tones and unfriendly body language- as if we're bothering them by ordering. Perhaps they don't allow samples because the moment you try their ice cream, you will no longer want to buy it... because from the first taste of our ice creams, we knew we messed up. We had the classic Banana Vanilla (which had no vanilla taste and kind of tastes like mush) with Rainbow Rice Krispies (lol...) and the Salted Peanut Butter (can't taste the "salted" part) with Sesame Crispy Rice (and maybe it was my bad for assuming it would be sesame flavored crispy rice but I didn't think I would be getting sesame seeds with crispy rice lol). Both left much to be desired in terms of flavor, but at least the presentation was cute right? Listen to the other reviews about Bananas by Morgenstern's - overrated and not worth visiting
This ice cream shop has some really unique flavors, but also some classics if you're not too adventurous. There's also a number of Asian inspired flavors, which I really liked. We ended up trying the Creme Brulee Olive Oil ($8.50), which is its own item as they brulee the top. This was simple but tasty with the contrasting texture and flavors. Then we also got a 2 Dip ($9.50) consisting of the Pineapple Salted Egg Yolk and Banana Cornflake Caramel flavors. The salted egg yolk was mixed in as little sprinkles, which was interesting. I thought the banana flavor was a bit overpowered in the other. They were nice to try, but would pick a different flavor next time. The biggest con is that there are no samples, so me ordering the entire scoop was to try out the flavors. read more

Sooo many flavors and toppings, there's gotta be something for everyone!! They don't give samples which is a bummer :( I got the pineapple salted egg yolk and the Hong Kong milk tea and it was DELICIOUS. I would go back in a heart beat!! Hong Kong milk tea tastes more like brown sugar boba than milk tea but still yummy! Definitely understand why they categorized this under caramel. The pineapple salted egg yolk was the perfect combination of sweet and salty and I loved the bits of salted egg yolk I can't wait to go back and try more flavors!!!! read more

Extremely overrated place. The ice cream here is not comparable to all of the other ice cream greats around NYC and is priced unreasonably too. The service was also subpar as it took almost 20minutes to get our ice cream after we ordered. Also, the sundae had already run out so we were forced to settle for a cup. The ambiance was decent at least and had both indoor and outdoor seating. Overall, would likely not come back here again. read more

Love this place! As a peanut butter lover, I was obsessed with the salted peanut butter and super choc swirl and would recommend! Dairy free ice cream can sometimes be really icy but this was soooo smooth and decadent. I am not vegan or dairy free but LOVED this place! 10/10 would recommend! read more
My favorite here is the score Sunday! I've had this so many times. The ice cream flavors are unparalleled and that they have such unique flavors that you can't get anywhere else. The vibe is like an old school diner that also serves amazing ice cream. One of my favorite ice cream spots in the city!! Coming here I expected their "finest ice cream" but it's only "bananas" here. They offer about 6 different dairy-free soft serve flavors. Banana and the peanut butter are the most popular. I probably chose the least popular - Ube cookies and cream and coconut Thai tea. They were okay. For the cookies and cream, they add the cookies on like a topping, which makes sense, but I probably would've done without them. read more
My trusted spot when it comes to creative, extraordinary flavors. I have yet to find another ice cream shop in NYC that comes close in pushing the boundaries on flavor combinations AND simultaneously keeping so many different flavors on the menu the way Morgenstern's has. Yesterday's experience involved Vietnamese coffee rum -good coffee flavor which could be a little stronger considering how strong Vietnamese coffee is for drinking, the rum was very faint. Burnt honey vanilla is a treat as always. The toasted rice notes were sweet and fragrant in the toasted rice yuzu swirl, great balance with the citrusy floral taste of the yuzu. The pineapple salted egg yolk was a surprising win in my book, it tasted deliciously sweet and savory, like Taiwanese pineapple cake (shortbread baked around a pineapple preserve filling). Truly unique! Although their East Village location is no longer open, I hope they continue to do well so I can come back soon and try their multitude of other flavors! read more

My favorite ice cream place in NYC! It's similar to Wanderlust or Salt & Straw in the West Coast with the various creative flavors. Be warned there is almost always a line here, but it's worth the wait. The flavors rotate every so often, I think every few months? I forgot what they said. Anyway do yourself a favor and drop by Morgenstern's. They also have burgers now, which I didn't know! I'll be back to try that and pies. read more

The ube cookies & cream was extremely bland, but the salted peanut butter was pretty good. I guess this can be a good late night snack if you're in the area, but I wouldn't go out of your way to try. The building itself and vibe inside is very cool, though. read more
The name is a bit bold. The place had a line on a weekend night, with other people probably also curious to know just how fine they are. Turnoff number one, not even counting the unnecessary line, was when I had a flavor in mind, but when we got to the register, the lady simply said "we don't have it." She didn't even say it to just one flavor. We had a bit of back and forth before we finally landed on some available flavors. You would think they would cross out the flavor or something so we wouldn't frantically choose a random alternative at the front. Now I'm left with a Durian Banana, which tasted exactly like you would think, just super sweet. I tried my friends' choices, and they were also super sweet. Their sorbets are probably better. Either way, no one in my group loved their ice cream. We also sat in the dingy outdoor chairs, where turnoff number 2, a cockroach was camping the trash cans. How cleanly the inside is now, I don't wanna know. While the flavors were creative, they were also very limited, and not executed the best, so choose wisely or go elsewhere for better. read more
Sorry, this really wasn't it. I've had Morgenstern's ice cream at their Rivington St. location multiple times before this and those times were great! I've tried different flavors but always went back for the Burnt Honey Vanilla. It was my first time visiting this Houston St. location and boy was I disappointed. There was a wait as there usually is at Morgenstern's, but this wait was just not worth it in the humid weather because the ice cream was subpar. I got one scoop of the Burnt Honey Vanilla and upon my first bite, I noticed how gritty it was - it felt icy as if it melted before and was frozen again. It was not creamy as ice cream should be and how I've had it before. The flavor was there, but the texture was just not good at all. Not to mention, it also left a weird greasy coating on my mouth... If everyone is raving about this location, I'm sorry to say that the ice cream could be a lot better. Hope they open back up the Rivington St. location soon. read more
wow they are so many unique and special flavours it took so long for us to decide what to get!!! And all the flavours we tried are surprisingly good!! Hands down one of my fav ice cream spot in NYC. ~ Pineapple Salted Egg Yolk ~ I am so intrigued by this flavour, don't think I have had this flavour combination in an ice cream before, and I love it!!! If you know what is Taiwanese pineapple cake with egg yolk (鳳黃酥), it kinda taste like that! I don't even though how to describe the taste, it's not very sweet and not exactly savoury either. The pineapple's sweetness and citrusy flavour is balanced out nicely by the salted egg yolk. There are even some chewy salted egg yolk bits in it! ~ Green Tea Pistachio ~ I thought well it's either you don't get much green tea flavour or you don't get much pistachio flavour, boy am I wrong! You can taste both flavours!!! I'm legit surprised. Pistachio ice cream is normally very creamy and a hit heavier, but the addition of green tea have lighten it up, making it more refreshing. There are a generous amount of toasted pistachio in the ice cream, super delicious!! ~ Cardamon Lemon jam ~ First time having cardamon ice cream, all I had before are cardamom buns, and now there is an ice cream version! The cardamom flavour is very aromatic! The lemon jam inside slightly sooth out the strong punchy cardamon taste, resulting in quite a refreshing ice cream. Love this flavour! Will I be back? Hell yes! Can't wait to try more flavours!!! I'll bring my family and friends to try! read more

I think this might be more of a hit for those who are vegan/dairy-sensitive individuals. I feel like the ice cream is an overstatement- it feels like a sorbet. We ordered the coconut Thai tea and ube cookies and cream. I don't think they were all that particularly good either. If I was to buy ice cream this wouldn't hit the spot for me. They were so generous with the portion and loved that. read more
I've heard so much about this place so naturally we had to pay it a visit. They have both ice cream and ice cream cakes. There are 88 flavors! I wish we could've sampled it but unfortunately due to covid we couldn't. I went for the raw milk and my bf got the chocolate oat and matcha pistachio. The raw milk flavor was amazing, rich and not overly sweet, it reminded me of those milk candy I used to eat when I was little. I think I liked the chocolate oat flavor a bit better, but I'm a fan of the oat flavor as always. There were some dark chocolate bits in there as well. The matcha pistachio was matcha ice cream mixed with chopped pistachio. It was a really good paring as well. They have some seatings outside but it was chilly. Definitely need to come back to try more flavors! read more
This is the second time I've had Morgenstern's, and I would come here anytime when I'm back in the area! Today I tried Malted Dulche de Leche, which was good although it didn't have a strong caramel flavor. The Guava Cheesecake ice cream tasted like guava and cheesecake, which was phenomenal (as a huge fan of both guava and cheesecake). My sister got the Cornbread and Peaches flavor, which was disappointing and didn't taste like cornbread; it reminded me of some cereal but I can't remember which one. read more

I've tried a lot of ice creams in my life and this was absolutely one of my favorites ever!! I came after work on a Thursday and there was no line at all. The worker was kind and super patient when I was picking out my exact change which I always love. I got a cup with two of their soft serve flavors: banana vanilla and ube cookies and cream. The banana one was really light and creamy and had the hint of banana flavor that was really nice. The ube does not taste like your traditional ube at all because of that banana flavor but it made a really good flavor combo. Both were super creamy and unique flavors I haven't had before. Also weird point but I don't like when ice creams are so cold to the point it hurts your teeth. This one was perfect for the 95 degree weather and didn't melt fast. First time here and I was impressed by how many unique flavors they offer! It was hard to decide but I ended up getting the raspberry black sesame which had a pretty strong sesame flavor. The raspberry helped to balance it out and I would definitely get this flavor again. The workers are super friendly and the interior is clean, bright, and modern. Can't wait to try their other flavors- the only thing is they don't offer samples. read more
