I don't usually give two-star ratings but this is definitely one of them. Saw this Grey Goose Honey Deuce soft serve being promoted on food vloggers' IG & TikTok accounts. Decided to stop by last weekend and see how it could compare to the actual cocktail. Did have the chance to taste the real Grey Goose Honey Deuce Cocktail during the US Open Fan Week. From the first glance of the ice cream shop, it looks like a fancy bar from the outside with the heavy doors + dim lighting + marble flooring. This brand is known to turn classic cocktails into both alcoholic and nonalcoholic frozen treats. There is no line so you can go right in. Fast service from friendly staff. The menu is placed on the front counter and written in big font on the wall as well. The ambiance and vibes look trendy just as I've seen it from the outside. If you're a fan of the brand, there're merch for sale too. I think for now they only accept card as payment which is fine. And, this is where everything goes downhill. Some people have claimed that the Honey Deuce is one of the best soft serves they've ever had in all of NYC. Well, they clearly don't know what they're talking about. It has no raspberry flavor at all or whatever the base flavor is supposed to be. Kinda stingy on the Grey Goose vodka, so the "alcohol" barely made a presence. Definitely not memorable for me. It's refreshing on a humid day but not in the best possible way I'm hoping for. There's just this artificial bubblegum taste throughout the entire soft serve. On top of that, I found a huge gap at the bottom of this expensive soft serve. Besides tasting artificial, now I don't get as much soft serve as everyone else either? The honeydew balls taste okay. The little chocolate tennis racket is pretty darn cute. Has been the worst $12 I've ever spent on frozen treats in general. What a ripoff!!! Don't waste your $12 like I did. The soft serve just looks pretty for pictures. Taste wise is meh. I needed to try a honey deuce treat this year and if it can't be the alcoholic honey deuce of the US open, then I guess an alcoholic soft serve will do. I'm not much of a drinker so I am glad that this place is quite conservative on the amount of grey goose they put in the dessert. This is a sherbet, not a dairy ice cream, which makes it light instead of thick and frothy. Ambiance was quite nice, with outdoor seating. There were no lines to enter or order. As a fan of Double Chicken Please, I was delighted to check out their newest endeavor for soft serve including alcoholic versions. I like how the flavors also mimic the cocktails they serve at DCP. The flavors do rotate, so if quite exciting to try something different everytime. During my visit, we got the Lychee en Rose ($11) and Japanese Cold Noodle ($11), both that I really enjoyed. Expected more from Unnecessary, considering they're founded by Double Chicken Please. The concept is cool, but the execution fell a bit short. It turned out to just be an underwhelming ice cream spot. The menu is rather short -- 2 alcoholic flavors and 2 non alcoholic flavors. None of them were that crazy, but my group opted for: NOT SO PLAIN VANILLA (Non alcoholic): Probably the best one out of the flavors. The vanilla flavor is pleasant and fragrant, but honestly it would be a problem if you mess up plain ole vanilla. PENICHILLIN (Non alcoholic): I personally enjoyed this one, but my group hated it. Ideal for those who enjoy zingy flavors, like ginger and lemon. This was nothing I would write home about though. DIRTY MARTINI OLIVE (Alcoholic): Hated this one. We ordered two of these and I noticed some inconsistencies -- one was evidently more potent than the other. I don't mind strong alcoholic ice cream, but the flavors did not balance well. Seems like they have a rotating menu, so the flavors are subject to change. Service was great and they worked rather fast with the amount of manpower they had. Was in the area so I thought I'd stop by Unnecessary, which is founded by Double Chicken Please. I was so excited to try it since the cocktails at Double Chicken Please are always so delicious and unique! Unnecessary definitely features some unique soft serve flavors (cocktail inspired ice cream). I asked for something refreshing, and the staff recommended the Dodo Green. Unfortunately, they don't allow you to sample flavors, which is pretty disappointing for an ice cream spot. If I had been able to try it first, I definitely wouldn't have chosen it because it was extremely sweet for my palate. It tasted like 80% Yakult and 10% Jasmine (which was incredibly faint), and I didn't catch the elderflower taste at all. I would rate this place a 3.5/5. I came by a couple of weeks ago when they were still in their soft opening. I had the DoDo Green soft serve in a cone and thought it was pretty good, but mainly tasted of yakult and no alc-flavor or any acidity to balance out the sweetness. I guess I expected a bit more of a complex flavor profile. Also for $11, this felt a bit gimmicky and I'd probably rather put that money towards an actual cocktail. I was so happy to finally get to try this spot. I had seen it all over instagram and social media. Get here early to be one of the first in line. I was the first person and a line did form pretty quickly. They open on the later side of the day 3:30pm on weekdays and I think 1pm on weekends. May want to double check that. They have four options to choose from. Some of them include alcohol and some don't. Some also include dairy and some don't. I got the Dirty Martini frozen yogurt. I don't really like martinis but figured why not try it. It was actually pretty good. The space itself is nice and spacious but there are no places to sit and enjoy your frozen yogurt. They have standing room bar tables around the side of the interior. The staff are friendly as well. I was told that every season the flavors change. We heard Unnecessary had a collab with U.S. Open for a soft serve version of the famous honey deuce drink and just had to try it. We had a great idea to grab the soft serve while waiting for the walk-up line for The Coop at double chicken please. Best idea ever, if I do say so myself, and definitely recommend! There was no line when we went around 4:15pm on a Thursday. The workers were super nice and encouraged us to try different flavors, which we will one day. We just had our minds set on the honey deuce in honor of U.S. Open. And good thing we did! The honey deuce was delicious. Loved the flavor mix of melon, raspberry, and lemon. It was a perfect balance, not too sweet, not too sour. We got the version in a cup and it came with more soft serve and melon balls. We were lucky enough to get one of the commemorative plastic cups! If you go early enough, you might be able to get one too before they run out! We definitely will be back. The other flavors sounded super awesome as well. I think we can all hold hands and agree there is WAY too much overhyped, mediocre (at best) soft serve/ice cream/froyo in NYC and frankly I'm sick of almost all of it...except this. Being a side quest of DCP means this place has a high bar to live up to, and even on their very first day of opening (when I went), I couldn't have asked for better. The matcha grasshopper and garibaldi were perfectly balanced, complex and layered in flavor and the fact that it melted relatively quickly was a welcome indicator to me that there wasn't stabilizer and artificial stuff in it (in case you didn't know, unlike the other froyo fads in NYC). I love that they don't make you feel like you're missing out on good stuff by not getting the alc flavors. The service was quick and friendly, the interior is stunning (as expected) and perfect for a quick after dinner nightcap, and I'm so excited to see what other flavors they explore taking a cocktail twist on frozen desserts!! read more
