Novelty items as well as a few practical things all with an Alaskan theme in mind. The prices are typical for a souvenir shop, maybe even a bit more reasonable. We picked up a couple books on the history of the state and one called "Alaska Bear Tales". We also bought t-shirts for the kids and a hoodie for memaw. My brother claims to love salmon jerky. We found him a bag and a framed map of Alaska for my cousin's upcoming birthday. Don't worry, he never reads my reviews (I'm not entirely sure he can read at all). 07/22

NYET NOPE NIEN NO It's been about a decade since I've been here and this store hasn't changed. They do still have lovely tea sets and very interesting and unique kitchen appliances. But other than that, there's not much to offer here.

As someone born and raised in this city I would never support this business. You can find local crafts by Alaskan artists nearly EVERYWHERE downtown - the 5th ave mall, Kobuk Coffee, or for Fur Rondy specifics the Fur Rondy store has all the same pins and better selection. Sans the lack of ethics behind this business, I would not shop here due to the lack of value and mark up of local items you can find at other places for less. To support Alaskan artists during Fur Rondy, check out the craft bizarre and market at Dimond Center that starts during the last week in Feb. Support local businesses that actually support local artists and their communities equitably (aka do NOT shop at Sara's!)

If you ever find yourself wandering through Ted Stevens International Airport with time to kill and…read morea wallet that's feeling just a little too safe, Alaska Mercantile is the kind of place that pulls you in like a tractor beam made of moose mugs and questionable impulse control. This little shop is packed wall to wall with souvenirs, oddball knickknacks, and some genuinely cool T shirts that somehow manage to feel both rugged and touristy at the same time. It's the kind of place where you walk in thinking you'll just browse and walk out holding three items you definitely did not plan on buying, but now feel emotionally attached to. I'm convinced half the stuff in there exists purely because someone in Alaska said why not and the rest of us are better for it. Now the real highlight was the interaction at the counter. The lady helping me had this voice that sounded like it had been marinated in cold air and coffee for about thirty years, and I swear she told me my shirt came in black but it came out sounding like blook . Not black, not even close, just straight up blook. For a solid five seconds I stood there wondering if I had just unlocked a secret Alaskan color nobody told me about. I almost asked if blook was seasonal or if it migrated south for the winter. We both had a good laugh once we sorted it out, and honestly that moment alone was worth the stop. Great shop, great humor, and apparently a brand new color added to my vocabulary.
