I find that anytime you have a question, they have a good story, or well informed insight into why a product acts the way it does, or the type of material that is used, and its benefits. If you're looking for some winter sports gear (whether you actually do winter sports or just want to stay warm in the frozen wasteland of the Midwest) then this is one of two places in Ann Arbor you can go to (the other is Bivouac). You can also get warm-weather gear here too (rock climbing, camelbaks, sneakers, canoes, hackysacks, and normal or high-tech clothes). The people who work there generally quite friendly and somewhat knowledgeable. They are also reasonable about prices, once you realize that most of this stuff is just really expensive everywhere. The store is small and quite cramped, making it hard to navigate and find things and really hard to try things on where you find them. They are also open later than most stores downtown which can be very convenient if you need to drive in and want to park within a mile. Personally I'm more concerned with the scant bike parking. My main complaint is that they are WAY too into themselves. A much larger section than appropriate is filled with moosejaw branded crap: headbands, T-shirts, water bottles, hats, etc. It's not REI; it's not actual gear or original clothes made by Moosejaw. It's just the same stuff you can buy anywhere (Sears, Meijer, Urban Outfitters, wherever) that happens to have THEIR name on it instead of some other retail company's. The kind of things that other places just give to their big spenders as free gifts and promotions are on sale through an area larger than the non-Moosejaw shirts sections. I had a great experience with their online price match program. I just did an online chat with one of their customer service reps and they matched the price for a North Face jacket I found cheaper on another website. I checked my credit card statement and sure enough they adjusted the price lower and gave me 1000 bonus points to spend at their rewards shop. My customer service rep, Orpheus, was very helpful, straightforward, and answered all my questions. I would definitely shop their website again. Update: Received my order yesterday. Fast shipping even for standard speed. Packaging was okay. It was a shipping bag with a bit of funny advice printed on it, "No knife, use teeth." This is a review for moosejaw in general, not this particular location, however this is the location at which I tried to make my return. Don't ever order climbing gear from this company. They won't return or exchange any climbing gear that is weight bearing under any circumstance. Now, don't get me wrong, I understand the said reason behind this policy, however in today's market place that does not align with the climate of pretty much every other Climbing retailer that I have ever dealt with in my over 10 years of being a climber. What I'm saying is pretty much everywhere else will return or exchange climbing gear if it does not fit you properly and is unused. I ordered a harness that happens to be too small on me, and now I am stuck with it even though I haven't even left my home with it. I made two purchases online to Moosejaw in the past 30 days and I will not be ordering anything more from them, as they have a serious problem with either quality control or purchasing or both. The issue is that items are not sized accurately. I ordered two pairs of shorts in my usual size. (I had order another pair of shorts from LL Bean 2 weeks earlier and the size was perfect) For some reason Moosejaw shipped the two pairs in two shipments spaced a week apart. When I received the first pair and tried them on, I found that they ran small and therefore I was going to have to order a larger size. Based on input from cust support, I waited until the second pair arrived, tried them on and then sent back both pairs -- at my expense. After a very long wait, the replacement shorts arrived and while still smaller than expected, they were usable and therefore I kept them. I ordered a pair of winter gloves (in July) only because Moozejaw told me I could use the points I had accumulated from buying the shorts to reduce the cost of the gloves. I order size Medium -- the size I always order, but when the gloves arrived they are larger than expected. I refuse to spend any more money returning improperly sized items to this vendor and simply will not purchase anything from them in the future. I ordered through Moosejaw for the 1st time and LOVED IT. I ord'd a pair of Keen sandals late-evening 6/16 and already rec'd them in the afternoon of 6/18. They were the best price, exactly what I ordered and just an overall nice experience. To top it off, the humorous emails and web content is added bonus. Interesting how consistent these reviews are... I don't think this is a real company, I think they are middle men. I think they have a huge selection on their website, but when you order something they just find it, mark it up, and then sell it to you. My order was "backordered" and I got an email stating it will be shipped to their "warehouse" in 2 to 4 business days, and then shipping will be upgraded for free to priority mail. None of that was true. I got my shoes today, two days shy of one month after I ordered them. Almost ONE MONTH after I ordered them?? When I asked about the initial email stating 2 to 4 days, and then priority mail this is what they wrote back: "We are aware that the email is misleading and are working to fix it" Unbelievable... I just wanted some shoes, not a bunch of lies and weird excuses. And they are big on the corny phrasing and wording... thanks a lot Mooooooooose Jaw! read more

I'll make a few points about my experience with Moosejaw online international service - Their actual attitude and ethos to customers is quite contrary to their "cool" website persona which is absolute try hard cool yet actually incredibly humourless and transparent. You'll understand when you go check out their site! When my package was stopped at customs to have duty fee's and taxes paid as I was just $56 over a $1000 limit, they would not revise the invoice to help me out. They instead lied to me and threatened that if I didn't pay the duties and taxes my package will be destroyed in 24 hours. I immediately called UPS and they told that they definitely do not do that. Being a paying customer of a $1056 order you would think they would treat you better than lying and threatening you with false claims just to get you out of their hair. To note, my package is not destroyed and won't ever be after conducting some of my own research! After speaking to UPS and my own countries Border Customs service they both told me the exact same thing which is the only person who can help you is the merchant by sending a revised invoice to the UPS brokers and that it was not illegal, contrary to Moosejaw saying it was. So Moosejaw either thinks I am bullshitting or they are actually just genuinely some really terrible people for what happens next. They contact me asking me to snitch on the UPS workers that were trying to help me out. I told them to call the number I used and do their own reporting. Also they actually did contact UPS about my order and had it marked as abandoned by them. Which is pretty much just leaving me in the dark and trying to bully me into paying these ridiculous duties and taxes. Now remember they abandoned my order not me. I'm still in contact with UPS and trying to work through it! Now if anyone is unethical about how they are treating people it's Moosejaw. And as for their "Help feed the homeless" campaign with just 20% of proceeds go to help feed the homeless for buying some crappy shirt that markets their unscrupulous manipulative brand. Yeah right, you think people can't see through that. The company is a joke and a prime example a capitalist company trying to use socialist and communist principles to market themselves for their own greed. Moosejaw makes me sick to my stomach and they are a prime example of what is going wrong in this world. They should quit riding on the backs of actual legitimate companies that do help people just for their own false advertisement! I've shopped with so many online outdoor companies it's crazy and these guys are by far the absolute worst. This review is for their online experience. There is always a problem with the orders. For instance, they asked me to make the "we made two charges..." confirmation on a card that I already confirmed with them (which delayed the shipping). Speaking of shipping, the order takes a long time to ship (I made 3 orders and they took, on average, around 10 days just to ship, even when they were supposedly in stock). Finally, they didn't honor a price match, even when all conditions were met. Each point might sound not too relevant, but it's annoying to have at least one issue every time I try to buy something. Avoid Moosejaw online. We placed an order for a Patagonia jacket and it was not delivered on the date promised. After two extensive chat sessions, my wife has decided that she is unlikely to buy from Moosejaw again. And she won't be buying three or four very expensive gifts for Christmas from Moosejaw. They wanted me to fill out a postal service form, that's quite extensive, and includes the requirement for a code number that our postal carrier presumably placed at our front door when they were unable to deliver it. However we never got that note and the Moosejaw people even told me that they had attempted to make the delivery to the wrong address. Then, on my second chat session, the Moosejaw gal wanted me to make my inquiries through UPS, since this is a UPS-to-Postal-Service delivery. I don't know where these people are coming from that they think of failure in delivery by THEIR delivery service becomes MY problem, my research project. If you look at the photos this is a little hole in the wall mountaineering store that's trying to provide online sales but just doesn't measure up. Moosejaw you should be ashamed of your customer service. When I had to return it because the quality was less than I expected, I was charged $7.95 to return it! Why does it cost more to return it than it did to ship in the first.place??? This is a review for moosejaw.com. I ordered a North Face jacket with 2 day shipping. Subsequently when I received the confirmation, my order was for 2 day business shipping with only weekday delivery. This didn't work for me, so I called Moosejaw and asked for them to either expedite the shipping or cancel the sale. They dealt with the shipper and said the item could only be returned to them, not expedited to me. So I asked for a refund. They immediately refunded the shipping charge of about $20, but would not refund me until (or if) they ever got the jacket back from the shipper. I contacted PayPal and was awarded a refund of the purchase price. Problem solved. NO!!!!! Moosejaw then recharged me for the shipping for a 2nd time, five days after they had credited me. So again I disputed and won my case. Don't use this site. It's a nightmare and they do not take responsibility for the problems they cause. It is unethical to charge me a 2nd time without my approval, and after the dispute was resolved in my favor. read more

Moosejaw.com's cutesy returns policy is misleading. For one thing, a critical restriction on returning climbing gear is only disclosed down in product descriptions. I ordered a Black Diamond climbing harness that right out of the box was too small. I was familiar with the harness so I had not read the full product description carefully. As a result, I missed the No Returns on climbing equipment line. I have had one other experience with them regarding a return. Their "Lifetime Return and Exchange" policy is misleading at best. Don't believe it! Read product descriptions carefully. The only way you can return is if the merchandise is in original packaging, original tags, unused and fit to go right back on sale. In other words, don't take it out of original packaging. Climbing gear, not at all. Caveat emptor. read more

I have bought moosejaw stuff online and sincerely wish I hadn't. The (expensive) "waterproof" down coat that I bought is absurdly cut for a gorilla - long, long arms, tight across the back. And it is NOT waterproof or even warm. Plus, even though I unsubscribed from their email list, I keep getting stupid and childish emails asking me if I am sure that I don't want to receive their emails. Moorsejaw sells substandard stuff and you really do not want to be involved with them. In particular, do NOT give your email address if you value your privacy. read more

I tried to order a jacket online at moosejaw.com using an Amex gift card I received for Christmas. I triple-checked the balance and it was all there. When I tried to order online, the transaction was denied, and it encouraged me to reach out to Customer Service for help. I opted for the "chat" option, and 30 minutes later, they weren't able to solve the issue and tried to blame it on my card (which I sent screenshots of the balance to). I recently ordered a product and was sent the incorrect size. This company is well known to have fast and easy shipping/returns and prides themselves on excellent customer service so, initially, i was not to concerned. However, I have been amazed and extremely disappointed in the company's poor customer service and inability to resolve my issue. I have had more conversation than I can count with the customer service department through phone, live chat and e-mail. They have yet to be able to offer me a return label or a way to cover the cost of the return shipping despite my multiple conversations and attempts to work with them. Terrible! I placed an order twice on their website and neither went through so I called. I talked to a completely inept salesperson who, after 20 minutes, finally recreated my order. I never received an email or any confirmation, but my card had been charged so I assumed the order went through. I called finally to confirm that my snow pants would arrive before our ski trip and there was no record of my order. The girl in the phone kept saying, "That is so strange. Huh. An error on their part turned into a pretty good experience. Two years ago I got swept into the Canada Goose craze and decided to order a Fusion fit jacket from them since they were one of the few retailers that carried this style. I placed my order but shortly after I called and canceled my order since I preferred a different style. I then ordered the preferred jacket to only get an email shortly thereafter stating my original order had shipped. I called and someone in customer service apologized and even offered me 15% off my 2nd order and provide me a return label via email for the wrongly shipped item. This is basically unheard of, since retailers are not allowed to discount any current Canada Goose models. So I did have to to drop off the unwanted jacket at UPS, but overall I got 15% off a Canada Goose Fusion Fit Langford Parka, a free Moosejaw hoodie, and a ton of Moosejaw pts which I spent on some gloves and another hoodie. read more

MooseJaw was purchased by Walmart in Feb 2017 and appears to be charging sales tax in states where MooseJaw does not have stores. Previously MooseJaw was reported to be charging state sales tax in Michigan, Illinois, Colorado, and Missouri.
