I was a little skeptical to go wine tasting in little ol' Cambria, but Moonstone was amazing! My boyfriend and I were in the area for the weekend, so we decided to stop in. We got our tasting fee ($5) waived for liking them on Facebook, so that was pretty cool. We went through tasting their reds (I remember a Zin, Cab Sav, Cab Franc, Syrah, and their Franceaux) and ended with their dessert wine, which were all really great. Both Todd and Allen were there, talking us through each one, with quite hefty pours. The atmosphere was great, very casual, and these guys were just fun to talk to. We ended up keeping the glasses and taking home a bottle of the zinfandel as well as the dessert wine. Everything was moderately priced, too, with bottles in the $20-$40 range. Overall, a great experience!. I'll definitely be back here when I'm in the area again. read more

What a find this is. I am not a big fan of Paso Robles area in general. There is some good wine to be had for sure, don't get me wrong. But most wineries either try way too much, or have things "just because they have to" and want to sell it with attitude, tasting rooms and "Experiences". Nothing wrong with that, many folks have a great time in some really lovely settings with views and dining areas with rolling hills and fields sipping what they believe to be "premium wine" because of the experience. In my opinion Paso has taken the worst qualities of Napa and tried to run with it. I know that sounds harsh but that has been my experience so far. From the far too pretentious and "wear a wrist band for tasting" Justin to folks like Eberle who cant make more than a couple of decent wines but make customers fall in love with them cos they are SOOOO nice! Enter Moonstone. From outside you feel like writing this place off, its like a wide open small room with few chairs outside and a standing bar with hardly any decor, design or "look", placed in a corner in Cambria opposite a public restroom. yes doesn't sound like much does it ? Simple as it gets, a tasting room to taste wine at, no views or "chateau's" here! Then there is the "wine list", they have but 8 wines (of which 2 were actually sold out and not even available for tasting !), all of which keep rotating based on what works best for them and their members. Nothing is distributed, everything is made for the tasting room and the members. The folks are nice, but professional, no big claims, no bad mouthing other regions and areas (something I absolute hate!) and overall there is a casual and purposeful vibe with a focus on the wine and nothing else. We went a tad late, but they were accommodating, generous pours and brief descriptions kept the tasting going. My favorite statement when I commented on it being quite new world compared to a lot of Paso Robles was "Wine is from fruit, our wine maker believes the fruit needs to shine". Indeed does it shine. These guys buy grapes from others in the region, pick what they like for the season and make that for the year. Great system that doesn't force sub-par wine to their members and is always maintaining a certain standard. No you are not guaranteed a re-purchase of the Chardonnay, it may be sold out and the next batch might be nothing like what you had before. Their Table wine and Zin are terrific, I mean absolutely great for the price, they are very hard to beat. The Cab is a bit fruit forward so old world folks may not like it, but its super approachable and hence will appeal to more folks. Syrah is sort of peppery and dark, quite unique and special in a different way. We only had the Sauv blanc which was a tad sweeter than expected and chardonnay as well (they were sold out of the others!) and they were decent as well. But a well rounded easy to love selection and a great concept overall. We signed up for the wine club and bought a case with their current selection and will try and visit when we can, but even if we can't we know we will have a few nice surprises in the next box that comes our way. Fun, fruit forward, new world wine without the attitude and big claims, get it here instead of safeway, your next bottle to share on a random weekend with friends and family. read more

I went to hear friends play music. The noise level in the place was so bad that the music could barely be heard. I know it is a wine place but was still very disappointed they offered nothing but wine. When asked what the non-alcoholic options were at bar the bar tender unapologetically and judgemently point at a water dispenser w plastic cups over in the corner. Was unfortunate to feel so unwelcome as a non drinker due to health issues. They should offer some soft drinks and use their nice glasses to serve them in. Don't go there if anyone in your group doesn't drink. Awful experience. read more

WOW! Is the words I would use to describe Moonstone. We wandered in on their tenth anniversary and it was packed but everyone was so friendly we were helped right away and went through the wine list. We ended up spending a few hours because the wine kept flowing after our tasting. Met some great people and bought a couple of bottles. On the way out the owner shook my hand and said thank you for stopping by. Couldn't of asked for a better time. read more

Sampled their entire line-up. Whites and reds were OK. Perhaps their whites were a bit better than the reds. The reds failed in the complexity area. All of them fell flat after the initial front palate flavor. Not very fruit forward, but OK. Certainly, no favorable "finish". While not far away from Paso, these wines are a far cry from the style and type of Paso even though they buy the grapes from Paso vineyards. Save your palate, go to Stolo a mile past the east (south) end of Main Street. Stop at Fermentations and try other wineries from the area. Requiring a tasting fee for this stuff was inappropriate. read more

Great wine cellar! Got a bit crowded inside and therefore, because of the crowd, felt a little rushed, but that's how it goes sometimes. I LOVED that they let me bring my dog inside and even had water for him at the counter. Our wines were delicious and we purchased a bottle of the viognier. The price is right for a wine tasting, and we even received a couple extra pours. The cheese and cracker plate was great, as well. I would definitely return next visit for another tasting and visit to this great little wine cellar. read more

you don't need a huge estate and a lavish tasting room to experience paso. moonstone splits the fine line of delicious wine and cool staff - where "revisits" and dogs are definitely encouraged. the staff is über knowledgable about their wines, oenology in general and even more so what wineries to avoid around the commercialism of paso. if you want victorian columns, this is not your spot. but, if you'd rather chill, chase down some great syrahs, pinots, and dessert wines, you've found your answer. now, shut up and take my money. read more

Visited Moonstone over the Labor day weekend and was not disappointed. It's rare to say that you like just about everything you taste. The gentleman who was pouring for my friend and I was very nice and knowledgeable. Who cares about the free tasting, I would've paid! Despite trying to be "good" and having an economical girl's wine tasting weekend, we each left with two bottles (one red and one white) and smiles on our faces. My wife and I love this place. On our first visit, a few years ago, we met Todd. He was so personable. He's such a nice guy that we couldn't help but want to support his business. The bonus was that his wines are excellent. We immediately became members. The staff is so friendly and welcoming. There is no "stuffiness" or attitude. Just good wine and friendly people. We drop in every time we are in Cambria. It is one of the "staples" of our trip. Even our 9 year old daughter tolerates the visit. I think its because there is a toy store two doors away. We let her get a small toy and then set her up at a table away from the bar. The staff is so kind to her. They take her snacks and sit and talk to her while mom and dad taste a little wine. Nice people and good wine. What more could you want? read more

My mom and I had a great time tasting wine here. A customer had brought in a big bowl of Salsa and some chips - it went so well with the wine. Nice to be able to clear your palate with chips and salsa. Every wine tasting place should offer this. The wines were five star and the staff was knowledgeable and fun. My wine-o friend owns a wine bar and the one time we were not searching for wine, but rather houses, we came across Moonstone Cellars. We got in right after opening and before the crowd, and had a great time conversing with Todd. We were very impressed with the 2006 Merlot, so much so that we brought it into the wine bar. The second time in, we did not beat the crowd, but had a lot of fun with the other patrons. The layout is great for engaging in conversation and friendliness is what you will encounter at Moonstone Cellars along with great wines and a very nice decor. read more
