We were boarding 5 cats for the first time since moving to Charleston. At one of the pet expos we met Moonshadow kennels and decided to try them. Our first impression was not a great one, the cat condo area stunk badly and was cramped overall. While there is a good amount of space in each condo it is not well utilized. There is not much of anything for cats to jump up on. Some cat toys were there along with other small little cat houses. They do charge $3 per administration of medication which can get quite expensive. Two of our cats were ill after we picked them up, one had a URI and the other is unknown. Brandi, the groomer did a great job with my 11 year old goldendoodle. I had taken her to another groomer in Mt Pleasant but they said they needed to shave her. I did not want to do that so I tried Moonshawdow. I used to go there but they didn't have a groomer for awhile. Brandi took a lot of time with my dog and this is the best cut she has ever had. I'll preface this review by saying that I have never boarded my dog before. When we recently moved to Charleston, we set out to find reliable dog care in the event that we had to go out of town. I presented to my new friend a stack of business cards I had gathered and she easily picked Moonshadow's and said, "Go here." I called the owners (PJ and Lea) to chat and PJ was so nice and informative. He does NOT breed discriminate, which is hard to come by anymore. He's knowledgeable about breeds and individual temperaments. The following week, my dog and I toured the kennel and were offered the chance to come to daycare so my dog could get a feel for the place. The kennel is immaculately clean and the kennels themselves are well ventilated and have central a/c. Brandy (who I affectionately have dubbed, "Miss Brandy" to my dog) seems to be my dog's "person" while boarding and at daycare. I called Lea to check on my dog the first day of boarding and got a full report on how well she was doing, who she played with, and what her schedule that afternoon looked like. I picked my dog up when I got back into town. It was very obvious she'd had a good time. All you need to take for your dog is her food, if she needs a special diet. Moonshadow provides everything- beds, toys, bowls, treats. They are incredibly reasonable, price-wise, considering the dogs are playing a good 6 hours a day. Pros: --Flexibility. Moonshadow Kennels is pretty flexible with regards to if you have extenuating circumstances (different pick-up time, last minute decision to opt into the doggy bath, etc.) and you keep them updated. My boyfriend and I were unable to drop off our pup within their office hours, and they were accommodating, allowing us to drop off at a slightly later time. Morning office hours from 8 AM-12 PM, afternoon office hours 3 PM-5 PM. --Pet happiness. Our pup likes to be around other dogs, and I believe Moonshadow Kennels schedules a time where all the boarded dogs are able to mingle and interact. They seem to individualize dog care as well, because they allow you to bring your own dog's food and items for their stay. They also understand if your dog is currently taking medications (like ointments for ear infections, etc.) or if you specify that you don't want your dog mingling with other dogs due to behavioral issues. --Standards. I liked that Moonshadow Kennels required us to provide proof of vaccinations, including kennel cough and rabies. It showed me that they were willing to be strict with owners to ensure the safety of their boarded dogs. Cons: --Unclear stipulations. Unlike human hotels where the prices of boarding are based on per nightly stay, the price of $24 per day is actually based on the time of 3 PM, if I remember correctly. Example: If your dog stays two nights, but you pick them up after 3 PM on the third day (since their afternoon office hours start at 3 PM), then they charge you for the third night anyway. We didn't know that until the day we picked up our pup during afternoon hours, and we were charged for an extra night. It was a bit frustrating because it seemed our dog liked his stay and we wanted to be happy with their service, but we couldn't get them to refund us that extra $24, even though they didn't clearly make sure we understood this stipulation before boarding our pup. The information is not offered online, so we had no way of knowing. I don't remember it being on the contract we signed for our pup to stay there either. It didn't seem fair. --No tour. I am very protective of my pup. I wished they would have offered to take me around behind their reception desk area to see the actual kennel my pup was going to be boarded in. I would have liked to see the area the dogs were going to mingle in as well, if it wasn't the fenced area outside that I could see. I guess this is just something I'm particular about, since I'm sure there are other boarding places that don't offer to take an owner back. --Slightly expensive. I feel like most places board dogs for about $15-20 a night, but I don't know if other boarders include doggy day care (the mingle time) with their prices, so this bullet point is just a slight nit-pick. Overall: I would use this kennel again for boarding services, but I would make sure my schedule allowed for pick-up in the morning to avoid the cost of an extra night. I think that fiasco was what really brought my review down from a 4-5 star experience. read more

Moonshadow is consistently 5-star. I've boarded my dog there at least a dozen times over the last 4 years. In fact, we drive from Columbia to Charleston when we fly so we can use the services of Moonshadow. We have nothing comparable in Columbia I was at the kennel when one of their dog-loving workers was throwing a ball and my hog and about 4 others were chasing it and playing and getting great exercise. I picked up my dog, a small Lab, and he has done little but sleep since getting back from "camp." He's happily exhausted and smells clean and fresh I read a negative review that involved the former owners but I have to admit I never noticed a problem with family feuds. And I did note that there are a number of exceptional reviews on Google so I feel this one negative review is an outlier. read more

My boyfriend and I were vacationing in Charleston for the first time and wanted to bring along our 7 month old Golden Retriever puppy and board her somewhere local where we could take her out during the day and play with her, take walks on the beach, etc. We found Moon Shadow Kennels with the help of Yelp and Google. They're customer service was awesome and Lacie loved it there. They offered to give her a bath before we picked her up to head home since she was sandy from the beach walks and didn't even charge us. I have used Moonshadow for years.while Leah and PJ were owners. I loved the personal touch that the family displayed when we would bring our dog there. About a year ago they sold the kennel to a husband and wife team who I've never met. In addition a manager who I was introduced to once and have never seen her since. I was told she would be there everyday making herself available. Guess one has to make an appointment have a conversation with Jessica just to see if shes really is on the premises. I get the impression that the staff runs the kennel and wonder just what they do besides clean and take the dogs to there "areas", I've never seen playtime nor have I ever seen them out of the runs. There is no communication between pet owners and owner of the kennel. I recently found out that they raised their prices without even considering letting people who use their services frequently, not even a flyer indicating they were going to do it. they raised the price $4.00. Truthfully, I think that's a lot to raise it all at once. I believe they could of done it gradually, but I guess this is due to new renovations their doing to the kennel. It's a shame the personal touch is gone and they've become just a typical kennel where dogs bring in their financial wealth. I am rather sad that this has taken place. I am hoping it will change, otherwise I will be looking elsewhere. I would love to keep bringing my pet there but I'm concerned about what kind of care he is really getting especially at their increased rate. Is it all about money? Very impressed!!! The kennels are large, clean and have a great overall layout. The staff is amazing! I have a very large dog that tends to be fear-aggressive. I was worried they wouldn't take him due to this issue. The office manager was great, she talked me through a couple options and we were able to develop a game plan on how to work through his issue. Jessica, one of the trainers, took time out of her busy day to work with my dog and to help him become comfortable with the kennels and staff. I have been using Moonshadow Kennels for all of their services for my 1-1/2 year old yellow lab for the last 6 months and have nothing but great things to say about them. My dog goes just about everyday for daycare and occasionally stays the night and every time he is taken care of so well. The staff there knows every one of their customers and their little ones by name. My little man is so tired everyday that I take him to day care that he crashes at home and is a wonderful dog to have as part of our family. I usually do not do this, but when there is a bad comment made that has no truth behind it I have to speak up. First of all I see Jessica every day and honestly she is the reason that the new owners do not have to come around all that much. Secondly I need to set the record straight about the price change. There was a price change and it was posted everywhere in the Kennels office, which is where you pay, for at least a month in advance before it took effect. On top of that the workers in the office also brought to your attention that there will be a price change. For the day care part the price changed only $2.00 not $4.00 per pet per day. They also offer packages where you can purchase 15 or 30 days at a reduce rates. It is everyone's opinion on if they are being served with that personal touch or not, but I have seen that personal touch each and every day that I go to Moonshadow. My little one likes to play hard and loves to roll in the dirt, but does he come home dirty? No. He gets a little wipe down every day. That does not sound like the staff does not care about your family member. My dog has contracted kennel cough while having the vaccine for it. When I took him to the vet they told me that it is like getting the flu for humans. You may have the vaccine, but can still get the flu. The vaccine only reduces the chances in certain strains. It does not protect you 100% from the virus. Every pet owner has got to know that kennel cough is something that a pet can get with they go to any kennel. Originally we had been pleased with Moonshadow however as time went on our dog continued to return with over and over with health issues. The first time we were gone for ten days a when we returned he had a UTI and was going pee every five minutes and having accidents. Though it is possible that bacteria in water caused the UTI I was not immediately ready to blame Moonshadow. The most discouraging thing was that they failed to notice and inform me that my dog was going to the bathroom every five minutes, which is hardly normal. The second time incident was a large cut on his nose. I am fully aware that dogs hurt themselves and but once again no told me that it had happened while I was away or when I picked him up. Instead, I picked a dog that was bleeding profusely to the put that I had a to take him to the vet to stop the bleeding. The third time was by far the worst, I picked up my dog to find him covered in hives. I had to take him to the vet where they said that he had clearly had this rash for a number of days and had been scratching to the point that he developed a secondary infection. Overall it was $107 and a very scary experience. When I first contacted Lea she was defensive and said it may have been the food or new beds they have, she was totally unaware that I had provided my own food and his own bed. To that extent she couldn't confirm that they had been using his food and bed. Later PJ acknowledged that they had noticed the rash but failed to notify us. This was even scarier to me! They noticed a dog was covered in hives and weren't concerned he would go into anaphylactic shock and die!?!??! Ultimately they admitted that on all three occasions they had failed to effectively monitor his health and consequently failed to notify us of his condition. To make up for it they offered us a $107 credit, which was laughable and simultaneously insulting. Seriously, I would have to be crazy to let them take care of my dog again. Overall I would say that Moonshadow is fine if nothing goes wrong with your dog, if something does happen you better hope you get home in time because they won't notice and certainly won't tell you if they do! read more

Moonshadow never answers their phones during normal business hours. I boarded two of my dogs here this past week and when I called to check up on them no one answered the phone. One of my kids has serious anxiety being away from the home so I wanted to check and see how she was handling the kennel. I called numerous times during the 8-12 and 3-5 window and not a single answer nor did anyone return my message. When I went to pick up my two dogs, I called Moonshadow while sitting in their office, and to no surprise I watched the multiple staff members present blatantly ignore the phone. When I inquired on getting the number or email for the manager or owner no one could give me any contact info. Despite all this, I rate moonshadow one star seeing as my dogs made it home alive, one puking with violent diarrhea, the other itching with fleas. read more

I have been taking my dog Colby, to Moonshadow and PJ for over 8 years! To sum up how trustworthy and great I think they are, PJ and Leah consistently pickup and drop off my dog to house. They have the code to my house, alarm system and I leave them a blank check on the counter. No joke, I feel that comfortable with them. Colby has been to Moonshadow WELL over 60 times without issue. To the contrary of another review, PJ called me while on vacation to let me know Colby was close to being due for one of his shots and actually arranged for that to be taken care. I would ABSOLUTELY recommend this kennel and would urge anyone looking at these to assume anything less than five stars for this place is an isolated dog or incident. read more

Someone referred this kennel to us after hearing our story about a bad experience with a kennel. I must say, we were pleasantly surprised! The staff are professional (dressed in matching tshirts so you know they are staff) The facility was clean and I could actually see dogs on the property that looked like they were having a good time. When we returned, my dogs were playing with each other when the staff walked them out so they hardly noticed us! They smelled great and we received a thorough report from the handlers on how they did, ate, etc. I have since then taken my dogs back to this kennel and will continue to do so!
