Before the massage started, I asked for a firm, therapeutic massage to work out my tension. i specifically said i did not want a "relaxation" massage, i needed more. What i got was a very light relaxation type massage. I was disappointed. Additionally, the location is difficult to find and the massage room was very small, awkward and crowded. Domi is a kind soul. My car battery died this morning as I was driving out to see her and Domi let me reschedule the same day so as soon as I got my new car battery installed, Domi scheduled me in for a 3PM appointment today. Originally, I had a 90 minute myofascial massage scheduled but since Domi had another client at 4PM, Domi saw me for 75 minutes and afterwards, I felt my legs were lighter and I could walk easier. I came to see Domi because my lower back had been hurting for days and my right hip bone was in pain for two weeks and not getting better. I decided to get a massage before seeing a MD. The myofascial massage was a bit painful. Domi only worked on my stomach, right thigh, and lower back for 75 minutes as those were my problem areas. She said to give two days for my body to heal and that one session wasn't going to resolve all my problems and to see her in about a week or 1.5 weeks for another session if I need to. In the meantime, she taught me 3 exercises to stretch out my hips and my stomach muscles. First time clients get a 20 dollar off with a coupon code and that made the pricing more affordable (145 for one hour) but I do feel bad that I didn't give Domi a tip today as I was unprepared and compromised from my lower back pain but will definitely remember to tip the next time I see her. As a middle-aged guy who's been an athlete all my life, I have had literally THOUSANDS of massages from various schools of teaching. These have been performed by 17 massage therapists in chiropractic offices, massage clinics, and independent therapists who came to my home. Domi uses the "Bluff Technique" named after its creator, Jimmy Bluff. I use massage to correct issues that crop up with movement inefficiency, mitigate chronic pain, and improve recovery. I've had hybrid stretching and deep tissue therapists, Swedish, Thai, Chinese, cupping, scraping... I have tried them all. This method works like deep tissue massage to help mobilize the fascia (your sliding surfaces). The fascia massage manipulates a layer that acts as a buffer between the muscles and other structures so that when your muscles of various types contract, they allow that muscle to SLIDE past adjacent structures without getting stuck on them. When this layer gets "junky" or dry or what have you, it can feel like those muscles are tight or not working smoothly. This can lead to poor posture, poor movement quality, and the muscle feeling "stuck". Since your body is moving poorly, you can start developing chronic pain in other areas as your body does its best to solve the movement problem by using suboptimal strategies. This can increase wear and tear on structures that are doing more work than they are designed to do because of this suboptimal movement. Deep tissue massage can break this pattern by getting the sliding surfaces mobile again which opens the door for your brain to go back to better posture and more optimal movement. But why go to Domi for your massage therapy? Regular deep tissue massage can be quite painful while it overpowers other tissues in order to get to those sliding surfaces. You might even receive significant bruising from the deep elbow gouging from your therapist. "Cupping" is a form of this type of overpowering mobilization, and I'm sure you've seen several Olympic athletes with those telltale perfect circle bruises on their skin near their workhorse joints and muscle areas. The "Bluff Technique" is like deep tissue using a scalpel instead of a hammer. That was a metaphor, in case you thought otherwise. No hammers or knives are used in either method. Domi's sensitive hands, ears, and eyes can find problem areas quickly. She lets the technique inform her movements to help rebuild your posture and position and get you back to where you need to be without excess force going into surrounding structures like bones, skin, and muscles. You can feel her following the nasty business at the surface and between muscles as she works in the fascia directly. The best I can describe the sensation as she works is that it is like a slight pain that intuitively "feels good" somehow. It's like your body knows what it needs to get out of trouble, and Domi is giving it exactly that. It is not like the sometimes excruciating deep tissue massage sensation where you might feel like you need to jump off the table while elbows, thumbs, and body weight are being applied. The Bluff Technique is "all the good and none of the bad". The Moon Waves Bodywork facility is quiet, comfortable, clean, and private. This is long overdue. Susan is AWESOME!!! The first time I went to her was when I had excruciating pain down my neck. I was incapacitated for several days unable to turn my head. It took me over half an hour to get up from my bed to a standing position, fighting tears of excruciating pain. After 1 week when I was mobile enough to drive, I went to see a doctor. The doctor diagnosed me with torticollis and prescribed me Flexeril and 2 Aleves every day for 1 week. I told her I had taken Aleve everyday and that it did not alleviate the pain the slightest. She told me I wasn't taking enough pain medication and to take what she prescribed. She also told me if it didn't go away in a week, it meant it wasn't enough and to take the meds for another week. By the third day, I felt sick with nausea and my stomach was in a lot of pain. The medication she prescribed did not make my neck pain go away either. A friend suggested I see a massage therapist and Susan Powell was highly recommended. After just 1 hour I was able to turn my head and my pain from an 8/9 went down to a 4/5. I booked another appointment with her after a few days and my pain went down to a 2/3. Eventually the pain went away on its own and I owe it all to Susan Powell's miracle healing hands!!! She listened attentively to where my pain was and really worked on trying to release the muscle spasm that caused me so much pain. I developed sharp pain in my lower right back, radiating down my leg. My primary care physician suggested traditional physical therapy and perhaps an MRI to determine if I had disc injury in my back.
