Met up with a buddy who now lived in HK and he asked if I wanted to re-live the glory days of crushing hotpots. Nabe One came to our heads as we have had a good experience with it before (in the TST location). We were in Causeway Bay at this particular time, so we chose to try this location. The queue was fairly long for a Sunday night and I was reminded of long queues despite being only a party of two. While we wait, we spent some time examining the menu and making sure we had our soup bases and choice of meets ready. Ordered - Two soup bases of Tomato Pork Bone Soup (4/5) and Sukiyaki Soup (4/5). Both were good and helped contrast each other. The sukiyaki broth was sweet and delicious, though enjoy it in moderation as it gets old fairly quick - Japanese Wagyu Beef - Pork (5/5). Very good. A bit on the pricier side (~ 41 USD / person) but might as well go all-in when in Asia. The cuts of beef are lean, juicy, and literally melts in your mouth. It is easily cooked and takes seconds when dipped into the boiling broth. I recommend this or the U.S. Supreme Beef - Pork when you're at Nabe One Service - One of the worst services I've experienced. The service was fine for first 1/3 and generally fell downhill to pure disrespect for last 2/3. My friend and I are Americans, this was an AYE restaurant, and we were paying a decent amount for this experience. We made sure to bring our A-game to get our money's worth. We cleaned a plate of wagyu beef every 1-2 minutes which shocked the servers as they tried to stall us when we were ordering to make sure they were not losing money off us. This was very annoying despite ordering everything in Cantonese. There was a time period when we didn't receive a plate of beef for at least 10 minutes and I had to speak English to get them moving. The server then brought over 5 plates of beef and it definitely looked different and of poorer quality than what we had in the beginning. Very annoyed. Also, by the time 90 minutes came, we were immediately forced to pay our bill (they don't allow splitting, too) and leave. Nabe One is good but I wouldn't expect too much from a service level. Most unprofessional staff I've seen, despite advertising this as an AYE.

It took us 5 minutes after having been seated to have water served. I was super thirsty after hiking up the hills to the restaurant . After our waters had gone empty they were not refilled. It appears that the water and condiments are self service which is fine but they charge a mandatory 10% service charge. For what? You can get better service for free in a hawker market.

One thing to note though is that each cake is quite small (especially for its price). The latte here is very good as well - very smooth and served piping hot, and isn't overly milky. Another thing I love is their brioches - my favorite is the brie cheese and turkey one. The turkey is so nice and tender and the cheese goes so well with it! I do dislike the fact that they do not offer cake sets - each piece of cake is around $38 and a drink is around $35, bringing the total to close to $80! For me, this is quite pricey and this is why even though I love Agnes B, it's not a place I go to often, but if it's a special afternoon or if I've got particularly good company, I definitely wouldn't mind. Oh and a special mention goes to their frozen yogurt, which I think is more reasonably priced than the cakes - I really dislike frozen yogurt that tastes like ice cream, so I love the frozen yogurt here because it has a tangy taste that completely sets it apart from ice cream-esque frozen yogurt. I usually skip the sauce because that sweetens my yogurt too much though, and they have fresh fruits like blueberries and strawberries as toppings which really complement the frozen yogurt.

We didn't have reservations but managed to snag seating near the bar with a view of the front dining room. For drinks I asked our server what a popular drink was and he said the Smoking Gun which was their version of a Negroni (Lapsang infused Bulldog gin, campari, chocolate bitters). I ordered the Tokyo Affair (prosecco, acai liqueur, lychee juice, cherry blossom). The Smoking Gun came in a dramatic Japanese wooden chest and when you opened it up, it literally had smoke coming out of it. My friend liked his drink and I liked my "girlie" Tokyo Affair - sweet and bubbly. We ordered: Lomo Saltado "El Taco" (Stir fry beef & veggies with coriander chimichurri and crispy gyoza paste): This was a very small taco but very tasty. The thin beef strips were seasoned well. Ki-mo-chi Chicken: Karage style chicken thighs were slightly spicy and perfectly fried. It came with a dipping mayo that was delicious. Spicy Hamachi Roll (yellowtail with kiuri garnished with fried shiso and chives): This came with a spicy mint chimichurri sauce. Yellowtail tasted fresh and the shiso added a crunchy texture to the roll. LL Loin (Grilled lamb loin with apple puree, mint salad and pickled onion): Lamb was super tender and very good. Service was attentive in the beginning but it took a while to find our server as the night wore on. Not surprising since the restaurant got really crowded. If I didn't eat the dessert I would have given four stars. The food is three star level but the environment and atmosphere is cool and would bring it up to four stars. Unfortunately I did have the dessert. The cake was one of the worst desserts I have had in a restaurant. If I went to 7 eleven and bought a mass produced prepackaged cake It would be debatable which one would be better.
