It wasn't just a mall, it was a backdrop for so many memories. I still remember when it had Rainforest Café and Johnny Rockets, those were absolute staples of any visit. There was even a Sanrio store at one point, that had planko, which felt like a little slice of joy every time I walked in. It really was the mall of my time growing up. Some of my favorite memories include visiting Santa during the holidays, catching movies with friends and family, and just spending afternoons wandering around when going to the mall was a real treat, not just an errand. Not to mention using the photobooth before "selfies" were a thing. They even had a bounce house and play area which was so much fun as a child. It's definitely bittersweet seeing it close. While it's not quite what it once was, it still holds so many good memories for so many people. A solid four stars for everything it was at its peak and for the nostalgia it leaves behind. An end of an era, but one worth remembering.

They were happily riding the escalator, and I was taking a simple video of them on my phone. To my surprise, a security guard stopped me and told me that videotaping was not permitted. At first I didn't even realize she was speaking to me because she was mumbling from a distance. When I continued recording my children, she approached again and more firmly told me that no videotaping was allowed. What made the experience so frustrating is that the mall is literally days away from closing. The building was largely empty, my children were simply riding the escalator, and I was recording family memories--not conducting a commercial photo shoot or disrupting anyone. Meanwhile, there have been photographers and members of the media documenting the mall's final days. The whole interaction felt unnecessary and unwelcoming. Instead of leaving with fond memories of one last visit to MacArthur Center, I left feeling scolded for recording my own children in an almost-empty mall that will no longer exist in a matter of days. Consumer habits may have changed over the years, but experiences like this certainly don't encourage people to return. It was a disappointing way to end what should have been a nostalgic final visit.

It is still clean but about half or maybe more of the shops are unoccupied, the food court is pretty sad, and one of the anchor stores is gone. The stores that remain seem to be very slow and overall there are only few customers in the mall. I think about 30 cars were near Macy's where I parked. The Mexican restaurant Abuelo's looks like it is closed down but signs are still there but zero customers so I think it was closed. The only store that looked semi-busy was the Chinese massage place where there were about four people being massaged and one customer waiting. I honestly was just looking around to get some exercise on a cold day but I really couldn't find anything I really wanted to buy even if I was searching for something. There were also lots of kids just using the mall as a playground but they seemed to enjoy the empty mall. The highlights of my visit was the sports memorabilia store and the pet store. They were also the only places that the clerks engaged me to see if I needed any help. I guess we have to just get used to the slow death of shopping malls in the future and realize online shopping is here to stay.

It reminds me of a two story version of Pembroke Mall (RIP). They renovated the mall since I was last there. It looks cleaner and modern(ish). There are a lot of vacancies including where Reignforest tea was. We walked the entire perimeter of the top floor once and then the perimeter of the bottom floor twice which was an estimated 1.5 miles. Not a very far walk, but it was with intensity. A few notable stores in the mall were Macy's, rack room shoes and bath and body works. Otherwise, the mall was pretty dead with little activity. The food court was the area that was most booming with activity but it still felt like a ghost town. If you've ever seen zombie apocalyptic movies, it kind of has the vibes like the mall you would be running into to escape from the zombies. Except the mall was already dead when it was open.

This is a good place to bring out-of-towners for shopping handmade goods in order to have a more authentic souvenir from a visit to the area. I'm not against grabbing a keychain at the airport, but this is for Moore specialized giftgiving and can be a fun place to shop for individuals to find a special birthday present . They routinely have pop-ups with different vendors in kiosks in the middle of the arcade. I would recommend anyone to stop by here in the course of running errands in the downtown area or if you have an occasion to be walking around the Norfolk TCC campus. The vendors are all very accommodating, and this is an accessible shopping experience for most people. If you have accommodation needs, I know that there are also printed menus and assistance for individuals who have mobility concerns.

There were a couple shops that had nice gifts and souvenirs from Norfolk (757 area) one shop had some locally brewed beers/ciders too. So I got a lager from big ugly brewing and a ginger drink from another local brewery...both were good. Don't plan on spending too much time or making a special trip just for it but if you are in the area stop by. There was a leather worker too working his trade. Definitely felt clean and safe by the way.

Located off 21st in the heart of Ghent. Only surface parking and it may be tricky as they have a one way directional flow to be aware of. The lot seems adequate most days, but can see issues at its height on weekends. No debris on my most recent as well as exteriors nicely maintained. The businesses are wide ranging which can make them a one stop, however keep in mind it's up scale. I think a few have been in the center day one like Bakers Crust, but speculation on my part. One of the newest that has been a welcomed edition is May's Parlor offering bakery & coffee items. They expanded from Virginia Beach and a fave of mine. My most recent visit was at Jen's Pownd Cakes which is absolutely wonderful and worth my drive from Virginia Beach. Totally recommend! It's been a few years for Baker's Crust, but is a solid brunch option. Also a very popular furniture store Decorum has been a staple for decades with trendy furnishings. A few others have come and gone since COVID, but have been replaced. The center enjoys almost 100% occupancy. So again, not a local to Ghent, but a shopping area I enjoy when coming into town. I suggest giving them a try if never been.
