"Our Man in Rio".... ....er, I should say, our man "IS" Rio, as in Rio Morales, owner-operator of Montgomery Structural Lifters. The first thing you should know, is that Rio is not just some guy who only shows-up at your job site to collect the bag-fulls of money you will likely need (regardless of who you hire) if you are unfortunate enough to need structural foundation repairs; but on the other hand, Rio was there every day on our job directing/orchestrating his crew and swinging a hammer with the best of them. That said, even if you don't know didley about foundation repairs, but are freakin'-out enough to start calling foundation experts, I can tell you from my experience of having no less than 13 contractors/foundation companies coming out in the past year before hiring Montgomery, Rio was the only one who instilled in me any confidence that his job approach was the right one for resurrecting the listing /crumbling foundation of our otherwise structurally sound 1920s Land Park garage. I initially emailed Rio pix of the deteriorated slab/foundation/dramatic leaning of the garage before he came out for his extremely thorough evaluation; and yes he did charge a fee (which was applied against his bid), but I can tell you it was the best investment I could have made. I have been in this home 43 years and am pretty handy with repairs/general construction, but I do leave the complicated jobs like foundations/roofs/HVAC to the pros, and I do know enough to ask the right questions and know the right answers when I hear them. If you don't have that kind of knowledge yourself, DON'T WORRY, Rio will give you the "straight-story" and you WON'T have to worry about getting ripped-off by shoddy work or un-needed repairs to "jack-up" a repair bill. Upon accepting the bid, Rio arranged for his structural engineer to draw-up the plans and took care of all the permitting, which went seamless, and on one occasion during the project while the city inspector was meeting with Rio on the job site, they were both on the phone with the engineer to discuss some of the foundation plans; which obviously made the "passing" inspections proceed without delays. Our job involved actually lifting the entire garage on steel beams and demo-ing the shot slab & foundation/re-racking the entire building with "come-alongs"/new internal bracing/seismic bolt & plates for the upgraded footers/headers, all which was brought up to current city code. Rio initially gave me two bids for my choosing: one to generally fix the foundation issues by repair or the second option, which I chose, to completely renovate the garage, and I couldn't be happier with Rio's attention to detail. He estimated 6 weeks from start to finish and Office Manage Dana always kept me advised of scheduling to keep Rio and crew from being in 14 places as one time! The crews always let me know beforehand what was scheduled for the day and ALWAYS showed-up on time and were a quite pleasant competent crew (Thank you to Travis, Rick, Jessie & Jesus for the great work!) OK I could go on and on, but I will say I am pretty picky who works on our house and Rio is as honest and competent as you will find, right alongside other top-notch contractors I have used ie "Fargo Construction" (now retired Land Park remodeler); "Sierra Pacific" for HVAC; and "Cal Vintage Roofing". I had my home inspected by a structural engineer and was advised that the cement foundation would require piers. I read the yelp reviews for Montgomery Structural Lifters. they had great reviews so I called the company to schedule a home inspection and bid. The office gave me Rio's email and I emailed and then spoke to him on the phone. He said he would contact me to schedule the appointment. he never contacted me. I called the office and they kept saying he would contact me. i also emailed him again. He never responded. if he was to busy to do the job, he should have let me know that right away instead of wasting my time. I think his lack of follow thru was very unprofessional. read more

His price was comparable but he planned to do permitted work that was inspected and guaranteed unlike the other company. He did a thorough evaluation, explained what he was going to do and why. He was helpful in securing the permit. His work was fast and really excellent ! What we thought was slab cracking due to aggressive roots was really due to construction defect. If you have an older home on a raised foundation or basement and you want it to be moved or the foundation replaced, there is no other place to go in the greater Sacramento area. You can get a structural engineer, contractor or home inspector to look at it but if you REALLY want to know what it's going to take to give your home the best possible result, Montgomery is where you need to call. I could just epoxy fill the cracks and shim the house myself but I didn't want a band-aid solution. They handle the permits, the soils, the structural engineering, design etc. and laid out a plan that made sense for an house in old Roseville that I am working on. read more

So far I'm so impressed because like the other poster here, I have an issue that I didn't know how to deal with and didn't know where to start. I googled for some direction and called a few different companies. The person answering the phone here was most patient and helpful and directed me to talk to two field personnel, both of whom have been patient and intelligent about hearing the situation and directed me regarding how they might help. GET A STRUCTURAL ENGINEER TO INSPECT YOUR PROPERTY BEFORE YOU CALL ANY FOUNDATION COMPANY! Earlier this year I bought an old home. My house inspector told me the structure looked sound, but I should have a foundation expert look at the foundation, so I called Montgomery based on their high ratings. Before he came out, Rio asked me if I'd had a structural engineer look at the property and I said no, just a home inspector. He asked me to send him the inspection report, and I did. During the site visit, Rio informed me that one side of my house had settled slightly, and that the foundation needed to be lifted with push piers, so I hired Montgomery to GC the work. While acquiring renovation insurance, the underwriters asked me to get a structural engineers report, so I hired a structural engineer to inspect the house. The engineer told me the house didn't require lifting. At this point I had already paid thousands for permits. In shock, I asked Montgomery to hold off while I ordered a different structural engineering company to give me a second opinion. The second one confirmed the findings of the first engineer. One even told me it was common for homeowners to be taken advantage of by folks telling them they need unnecessary work. After I shared both engineer reports with Montgomery, we agreed to end our contract. I wish I had known to have a structural engineer inspect my foundation first. It would have saved me thousands of dollars. Engineers don't sell foundations, so they have no incentive to tell you anything but their professional opinion. I hope this review saves at least one person the headache I've been through. read more

If I could give 10 stars I would. Rio didn't do physical work on my home, however he assisted me over the phone and eased my fears, some would say I was freaking out. I can only imagine how great of work him and his team actually will do on a job. He was thorough, patient, and educated me on stucco, when he could've said ok let me set you up with an appointment and end it there. I offered to pay him for his time, especially since it was after hours, he declined and said to leave him a yelp review instead, so here we are. I recently purchased my first home. The previous owners did not disclose the major cracks in the slab foundation. We pulled the newly laid carpets back to find wide cracks all throughout the house and major heaving. I only had 1 month before I was to move in and did not know what to do. I had an engineer come out and he told me he thought the house had settling issues but I could not hold hi accountable because it was only his opinion and if I wanted a report it would cost me an additional $1000. . I then contacted Rio at MSL and explained my issues. Although he was incredibly busy He came out within a few short days because of my tight timeline. I knew from the moment he walked around the house both inside and out that I was in good hands because he was incredibly thorough.
