The breakfast was great, bonus was the whale sighting.

You'd never really pay a lot of attention to the building, coming up on it from the street (I couldn't believe it when she turned into the parking lot, thinking she must have had some errand to do first). She had to lead me inside along the speakeasy passage to the tunnel, it was so dark. I thought it was styled very fun and cute when my eyes recovered and adjusted. I wasn't super hungry so I only had the fried breaded pickles and the house battered prawns--both were great, but those prawns were something else. They were some of the best things I've ever put in my mouth--ever! Perfectly cooked, huge and moist and so flavorful. Their cocktail menu is great with lots of choices--we loved our drinks. We also loved Athena, our bartender and server, who had wonderful suggestions for us and was just wonderful in so very many ways. I so want to go back!

The covered patio is great to sit and munch on food, but on a sunny day, I would however recommend just ordering take out and sitting on the picnic tables right beside the cafe on a sunny day. We ordered a few beverages (Chai Latte, Americano & Maharaja Express) and snack items (ham sandwich & scone) - and everything was reasonably priced and served quickly. The scone was really good though, like better than many of the scones around. We imagined this being a quick coffee stop on the way but ending up spending a good 30mins soaking the views. The pit stop was worth every minute!

And yes, it really is inside a bright red caboose! The whole space is cozy in the best way, with a little seating indoors and a bit more outside, perfect for soaking in the quirky charm. The menu is huge and everything on it seems to call your name, breakfast all day, tons of sandwiches, muffins, smoothies... seriously, so much to love here. On this visit we had the falafel and the Reuben, and both were delicious. Fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with care. Between the unique setting and the great food, this spot is such a fun little surprise. Definitely worth a visit (or two... or three!).

There is definitely at least one back room, but the main dining room is a bright, airy space that has access to a patio where may even be some live music playing. The tables are gorgeous - all live edge, which might create a bit of an issue if you have short arms and are used to stealing bites across the table, but they are absolutely beautiful and a nice nod to the area. The wine list is extensive and a bit overwhelming, but the service is happy, friendly, and very knowledgeable. In fact, I love when servers don't know, admit it, and find the answer for you - it's humble and shows they really care at getting you what you want. We got the orange wine, which is a new favorite of mine. It's like a rose for reds. Rose:White::Orange:Red. More savory, still light, and best chilled. We had the beet hummus app, which is definitely best eaten with your hands. It's light and delicious. We had the miso black cod, a personal favorite, and the lasagna for dinner and while both were good, the accoutrements with the cod were the true standout. Amazing and I could probably eat two of them. As the restaurant operates on a seasonal menu, we had a strawberry rhubarb cobbler for dessert. I know there is Sunday Brunch, and I can't wait to try it. It's not the cheapest, but it's one of the nicer restaurants in Whatcom, and is definitely worth your pennies. Everything about it makes for a truly nice experience, and we'll definitely be back.

The server eventually made his was to the room and handed me a menu with no additional information about what I might enjoy or any special menu items offered. It was a blasé (to say the least) welcoming. I manage to figure out without any suggestion from the server, that the special of the day was a beer & a burger. I ordered that and it took quite a long time to arrive, approximately 35-40 minutes. My beer arrived in a timely fashion. The couple at the only other table occupied in the room commented that they thought the server had forgotten about my order as it was taking an unusual amount of time for my meal to arrive. The server finally arrived with my burger and promptly disappeared until I was finished with my meal. I was never asked once if I was enjoying my meal, if I needed or wanted anything else. I do usually enjoy a drink with my meal! As I am aware that the staff is hired for "seasonal" work, however, it might be worth investing in a much more inviting staff with professional training. I thought that being a "resort" the staff would be very welcoming and trained to be an ambassador for the business. I left with a feeling of disappointment.

For the dinner we had scallop with red pepper risotto and mushroom pierogis. The scallops were big and perfectly cooked. The red pepper risotto however was a little overwhelming in the red pepper flavor. My husband thought it was delicious and ate it. The pierogis seemed really underwhelming and store bought. It was cheese pierogis with mushroom and arugula on the outside. I feel like if they were made in-house, the mushroom would be on the inside. They were still really good and I ate them all as well. The brunch is the thing I waited for. The lemon ricotta pancakes were to die for! They were so perfectly soft and cakey. I sadly couldn't eat them all because they were so large so I recommend sharing. Those were definitely the star of the show. To be fair I only had coffee - decaf - and it was really good. An americano. And they had cinnamon. Which always makes me like a place more. The place was super busy (truth and reconciliation day) but the staff were all really nice albeit exhausted. Didn't stay in because it was loud but I liked the ambiance and would enjoy hanging around there on a quieter day.
