The manager and the person checking us out were friendly. The selection was limited. The manager said that customers came in before the SNAP benefits changes and bought a lot of stuff. If you have a sweet tooth (or a spicy one), Alamo Candy Co. is basically the mothership. Walking in…read moreis a total sensory overload in the best way possible--rows of technicolor treats, piñatas hanging from the ceiling, and that iconic "Batman" guarding the aisles. The Layout & Vibe It is a massive warehouse-style shop filled with every kind of candy imaginable. They have a huge selection of American classics and imported Mexican favorites, but their homemade line is where they really shine. * The "Batman" Rule: You can't miss the life-sized Batman statue--just a heads-up that there's a "Do Not Touch" sign on him! * Organization: The shelves are packed with everything from bulk lollipops and "Glow Pops" to stacks of de la Rosa Mazapán. What to Grab * The Classics: You have to get the de la Rosa--it's a staple for a reason. * The "San Antonio" Specials: They are famous for their Chamoy pickles (look for the Big Tex Dill Pickle in Chamoy), Picositas belts, and those spicy tamarindo chili balls. * Party Needs: Beyond the candy, they have a ton of party supplies and authentic piñatas if you're prepping for an event. Pro-Tips for Your Visit * Parking: They have a dedicated customer parking lot, so you don't have to stress about finding a spot on the street. * Timing: They are open Monday-Saturday (9:00 AM - 6:30 PM) and Sunday (10:00 AM - 4:00 PM). * The "Sugar Rush": Be prepared to leave with way more than you planned. It's hard to say no when everything is so well-priced and unique! Whether you're a local or just passing through, this is a San Antonio institution that you have to experience at least once. #AlamoCandy #SanAntonioEats #MexicanCandy

Today was opening day. I was excited to see this place because the one downtown is rather…read moredisappointing. I have gone to locations on the East Coast as well as California, and those are full scale stores, often multiple stories with ceiling high statues of candy. Although this is merely a booth area, I loved the open air feel. Couple this with the service, I this one more than the one on The River Walk. The employees were very friendly. Aside from a few things not having been priced yet, they were operating efficiently & smoothly for day one. The prices here are admittedly higher than most stores, but I would advise seeing it more as an experience. There is also definitely far more selection and variety than The average candy store. One can always try for very little from the candy in the bins. Quality over quantity. The typical by the lb candy, the section with oversized everything, sushi candy, full sized pizza candy, then my favorite, Plush Yummy World Food! The story behind Yummy World is that they were originally designed by Heidi Kenney (http://www.mypapercrane.com) before being bought by KidRobot. I have loved her art for more than a decade, and only admired her even more after meeting her during a local art festival in her home state, Pennsylvania (the festival was in Philadelphia, she lives in nearby Waynesboro). Anyways, they have many of these plushes there! Adorable. Cheese Balls, Curly Fries, Fruit, and Tacos that last forever. Enough said.

Their shelves are packed with goodies. Parking is a little bit of an issue, it's limited parking, and it gets very packed where they are located. They have a lot of authentic Mexican items, and candy. Their prices are extremely reasonable. I got me a lot of snacks and some items. They have table covers, candy, drinks, small nicknacks, piñatas and more. I was hit was some nostalgia with some of the items they sell. Younger me would have liked to shop here but adult me can spend some coins here. Do yourself a favor and stop in. It's nice to support a small business while enjoying some tasty treats. Thank you to the staff that work so hard to keep their shelves stocked. I will be back.
