We were heading out of town after a visit and decided to try. We ordered Nachos with everything. You can choose the meat. We chose beef. So it was chopped up steak, cheddar cheese, pinto beans, avacado, onions, tomatoes, and crema drizzled on top. Then you get sauces in a side container. Spicy red sauce and a milder green sauce. It was SO GOOD! Really hit the spot. Chips were great. I think they were homemade. Really good flavors! So glad we stopped here. The best is the homemade corn chips and home made corn tortillas(soft). The giant burrito, carnitas plate and huarache were very good. The quesadilla and breakfast burrito were just so so. I had driven by this place my whole life i never thought to stop, i was hungry for breakfast and they werent the only place open in town before 11am. I was super happy to see that they opened to early. We went got food because they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner all day it is really nice. The food was wonderful. The service was even better. I'm pretty sure they make everything from scratch, certainly the chips, which were delicious. The salsas were so flavorful I was in awe. When my meal arrived I was blown away. Very good service. Unfortunately I feel mislead by the other reviews. Yes it is authentic and you can get dishes not normally found in most Mexican restaurants, but the quality is mediocre. The salsa is just the stuff you can buy at any Mexican market (green or red), the beans taste canned and the rice is bland. At the end of our meal we received our check and two pieces of candy for each of us, unfortunately the candy had dead ants in the wrapping. read more

It was nice to stop in again and see that Monte Alban is still serving quality, fresh food with exceptional service. I hadn't been in for a couple of months, and while out searching for a breakfast fix that didn't come via my driver's side window, I recalled that Monte Alban served breakfast. Granted, my choice of "The Big Breakfast" (2 eggs, hash browns, 2 sausage links, 2 rashers, and toast) was not that exotic, for 7 bucks, it was a damn fine meal. Coupled with the warm chips, the salsa verde (amazing flavour) and hot beans as dipping options, I was stuffed. I even tried their other salsa roja (really hot) and the chef mixed me a bowl of less hot that was pretty good, but the salsa verde is my favourite (especially when mixed in with the hot beans) The eggs were flavourful and fresh, the rashers were large and crispy, the sausage and hash browns were typical, and the toast was an awesome pan grilled bread that is not a typical loaf variety. It was different, but really good with butter and jam. Service was very friendly and attentive. My server never let my water glass drop below half full, and ensured that all of my needs and requests were met. Many in this town could and should learn how to work a table from this lass. She was perfect!! That elusive 5th star is attainable if they use their fresh tortillas and make their chips from those.... I am a slave to fresh chips and great salsa. I was told that business was OK, but dropping a bit with the absence of tourists, so this winter may be the make or break time for this troubled location. I would suggest offering some discount specials, coupons, and advertising to get the buzz going with more locals....oh yeah, and fresh chips (wink) read more

Not once while we were eating were we checked on, not even to fill our water or offer more chips. As dead as it was, there was no reason for the poor service. I've only eaten here once so far, but I want them to get more business! Take this review with a grain of salt. This location has been a string of mexican restaurants. All were mediocre and one had pretty bad service. This place has just reopened as Monte Alban. The menu is not your ordinary fare you see over and over again. There's a lot of stuff on there that I've never heard of and I can't wait to try it. The menu has items listed and on the back page there are corresponding pictures of the food. This reminds me of the authentic-ish places I came to love in CA, where the menu is above the register and all the dishes are pictured next to the name. I had the pork pastor meal. I forget the spanish name. It was good. The pork might have been a little over done, but the quality of chips, salsa, beans and rice made up for it. I'll definitely be going back. It's a little different than your every day mexican place (the flavors are more subtle, not so in your face). The beans are sort of half refried and half whole beans. They were good. The salsa was salsa verde. Really good. The fresh cheese on the beans was awesome. Give them a try, but don't expect to get the same ol' same ol'. This seems like a great place to try something new. Hot, hot salsa...love it! Both the red and green salsas were delicious, as well as the small and sturdy chips that were great for dipping. I had the burrito plate for $9. I loved the light and fluffy rice and cotija cheese over the semi-whole beans. The burrito was medium sized and filled with yummy carne asada. I usually don't do wet burritos, but the red sauce, cheese, and sour cream on top added a lot of great flavor. My husband likes the street style tacos ($2 each). Had I known before hand that they serve their mole bone-in...I would have passed. Bones creep me out (I'm odd, I know) and it was not easy to determine edible from skin/fat when everything was drowning in sauce. I learned that night after talking to staff members that it opened up five months ago and that it is in a location that has been burned many times-over. $16.00 for a large horchata, two picaditas, and an enfrijolada and tasajo plate. Complimentary chips and salsa. Two picaditas-one that had quesillo and the other one had al pastor. The quesillo was perfect but the al pastor needed a little more seasoning--nonetheless, it was an overall good appetizer. The enfrijolada and tasajo plate was wonderful. It is various corn tortillas sliced with black bean sauce that is topped with queso fresco, thinly sliced onions, and parsley. Tasajo is a sliced beef cut that is marinated in achiote before being seared and it was a good sized portion. Their menu has a lot of the traditional Mexican food fare but the Oaxaqueño food stands out. Too bad they don't serve molotes or memelas. read more

We tried this place based on the great reviews but were not happy with our experience. Most of the food was tasty but the service was crap. I ordered the ceviche de pescado and, after the waiting about 25 minutes for our food, he brought me ceviche de camarones. When we told him, he argued saying I didn't tell him, I only said ceviche. Well, there are two choices on the menu so if he didn't hear me say pescado, how would he know which one I wanted? He then said they don't have pescado, only ceviche. He asked me if I wanted to change my order but I was starving already and didn't have another 25 minutes to wait so I ate it. My daughter's torta also came out without any jalapeños after he asked her if she wanted them and she said yes. I would have considered returning if our server had handled the mess up appropriately because the food does taste good. We won't be coming back now. read more

How is it that the best molé on the west coast is kept such a good secret? The place was quiet and had few customers on a bright and sunny May Day, which I usually take as a bad sign. But I was proved wrong! The owner was kind, prompt, and friendly, and when our food arrived we were wowed. I had the pollo asada with cactus salad (a first for me, and it was delicious, bright and refreshing) and fresh, handmade corn tortillas, tender and hot. The chicken was ever so slightly dry, but the dish on the whole was excellent. My date had the molé Oaxaca, and it was definitely the star of the evening. Rich, velvety texture with just the right amount of sweetness and salt. The chicken was falling off the bone. Wrapped in a fresh handmade tortilla, it was a delectable experience.
