Only after arriving and filling out all the forms was I casually informed that I would need to pay for a comprehensive dental exam as well- including x-rays. Since I had recently undergone a thorough exam by a different dentist and have no current issues, I declined and left, my morning wasted. My daughter needed a tooth extracted and Dr. Sandhu was patient and handled the situation very well. I guess since she has kids of her own, she knows how to handle the situation. The monitors in the room for the kids to watch what they wanted helped a lot too! If my kids are like me, when I was a kid, I looked forward to picking out a toy. Just know that you pay upfront and get reimbursed only if you have a PPO plan. Parking can be difficult, but they share parking w/ Safeway upstairs and have 3 spots for their business. The rest around the area is metered parking and some residential parking. I like to come early so I can stop at Starbucks, and after shop at Safeway. There's also a Go gas station down the way that has good gas prices too so you can knock all your errands off your list. read more

I just moved to a new city. I broke a crown in two. My new dentist happened to be on vacation until the end of the month, so I came here because they referred me. It didn't even dawn on me to search if they were in network. They were not... I was grateful they could see me fairly quickly given the circumstances. First appointment, they took X rays but didn't have time to tackle a crown. Understood. I come back 2 days later. The dentist who took care of me was not personable. Worse, she was very rough. I indicated that I needed 2 doses to be numbed, but she dismissed me and started working on me with only one. She realized that I, in fact, I needed 2. But why put me through the unnecessary pain? The dental assistant was lovely but never sucked the saliva out of my mouth, and the dentist got annoyed because I had to prop my head to not choke. (!) She was so unpleasant with me for 2 hours and repeatedly asked me to "relax"... The best came when I was asked to pay $2,000 upfront with no prior estimate given. I will never ever go back there. My new dentist has lost me too. If that is the caliber of colleague they vouch for, I am out. So, I will drive to San Francisco to revert back to the excellent dentist I have been seeing there for at least 15 years. It is so worth it to me. read more

Same day crown, one year ago. It went really well and is still great. I had another crown recently with a dentist in Orinda because of insurance company change. It was a nightmare of an experience. I will stick to Dr. Kami next time, even if the insurance coverage is less. He is excellent. read more

Our family has been under the expert care of Dr. Anne Becker for over 20 years. She and her staff have been family to us and our smiles have benefited from this wonderful relationship over the years. This year, the practice was taken over by a new dentist/organization and they, without provocation or warning, let Anne and her core staff members go. They never sent any kind of letter of introduction or any other kind of communication informing the patients of any of these changes. They simply carried on with "business as usual" leaving long-term, loyal patients to find out for themselves when a stranger entered the exam room to work on them. I believe this story speaks for itself. I do not recommended this office. If I could give them zero stars I most certainly would. In my quest to write reviews beyond my usual restaurant reviews, as encouraged by a couple of my friends and followers here, I am now doing the few businesses I frequent or have used recently. Montclair Smile Design, and especially Dr. Anne Becker, is top notch and very professional, caring, knowledgeable and very competent. After 18 years of using another dentist I learned that my treatments were doing more harm than good. Having had dental care all my life I learned I had a bad bite that caused breaking and loosing teeth often, including front teeth. Some of the remedial treatments made it worse. It was horrible. I was recommended and encouraged to consult with Dr. Becker, and I thankfully did. She was very thorough and consistent with her assessment, and did not diminish the problems I faced. Rather in a forthright and caring way described what she observed and what may be possible. However, it would be no small task and involved a team of dental professionals beyond her office as part of the plan working with her. What impressed me was her encouragement to get a second opinion, which I did; and then even a third opinion with the top dental professionals in the Bay Area. Dr. Becker loaned all her models and info on my circumstances for all those other professionals to use in their diagnosis, and they all concurred with her diagnosis and approach. So, I trusted Dr. Becker and went with her and her team and never regretted it. I have a new fully working set of teeth, secure, and no breakage; plus a smile I never had previously. It gave me renewed confidence. Plus I avoided getting dentures, something I really did not want. It was a lengthy, expensive process but worth every cent. Everyone in her office is super kind, professional, friendly and upbeat. I now have periodic cleanings with a dental assistant, Shelly, who is extremely competent and caring. I highly recommend this dental practice, as Dr. Becker solved an extremely difficult dental issue. read more

This review is for the "new" Montclair Smile Design-corporate owned. I thought, my cleaning is scheduled, I will give them a chance. A shame what this long time family establishment has become. All new front desk, too busy with their personal phones to be warm. None of the new hygienists hold a candle to the skill of Ari, Shelley or Karen... even their former hygienist Nathalie (my immediate and extended family have seen either the dentist Clark, another dentist Vivian or a new grad Lorena for our recent cleanings) we all had the same experience- worst cleanings we can ever remember. Don't dentists only clean teeth when they don't have clients? Huge red flag. Clark Kami (looked up his license and it was just issued last September)the dentist that took over-did my exam, I felt very uncomfortable and awkward. They were all dishonest about why my dentist and hygienist that I've had for years were gone. read more

I just finished my last tray of invisalign and could not be be more happy with the results. It's been a long journey and at every single appointment the staff were professional and on time, made me feel comfortable throughout the minor procedures, and answered my questions and concerns with thoughtfulness and understanding. As someone who has had a traumatic mouth experience from a bad fall, which included multiple gum grafts and implants, i really appreciated how careful and gentle the staff was to my sensitive areas. I was so happy about my experience that I got a whitening done a few weeks later. I couldn't be more confident about my smile--something I used to feel insecure about. The best care I've ever received as a dental patient, and I've been around the proverbial block, with dentists in LA, NY, NH, and PA. I was worried about the transition from Dr. Becker to Dr. Kami, but I think she made a superb choice. He is extremely technically capable, recommended a top-notch endodontist when I needed a root canal, coordinated well with her, and put in the crown flawlessly. His bedside manner (chairside manner?) is warm, and his explanation of what is happening and why, is extremely clear. Couldn't ask for more. read more

Went in to get a cleaning with my long-time dentist and hygienist. Montclair Smile Design was a woman-owned business, built up over many years by an extraordinary dentist/practitioner, who treated staff with care and consideration, and who always provided exceptional dental care and techniques. New owners who have taken this over are nothing like that - and I urge people not to support this business anymore. The hygienist I had was rough (to say the least), and the front desk openly lied about the absence of my former dentist. Turns out that she was fired (they said "retired" when I walked in - a direct quote). Apparently these new owners already ran another dental takeover into the ground in Antioch. I've never had a chance to even speak with her or any of her staff, who also had to leave. I will never support business owners who are so lacking in integrity; and clearly not good at their work, either. What a loss for the Montclair and surrounding community. read more

Went in last month when a tooth issue got so painful, I was ready to shoot myself in the head. In desperation, I called them and they squeezed me in right away. Just to let you all know, I'm a huge chicken when it comes to a dentist thanks to a childhood trauma getting a tooth pulled. Needless to say, even though I was in pain, I was still freaked out during my visit. Everyone in the office was very understanding. I was lucky to get Dr. Catalano. He was patient, compassionate and completely understanding of my fear. He told me I needed the tooth pulled and they would do it right away. He called in a prescription for some valium to help me relax as well as some aftercare meds, which I picked up before the extraction. During the procedure, both he and assistant Tara explained everything to me, told me what they were doing before they did it and took their time to make sure I was comfortable (the valium helped too!). I went in for a follow up last week and the treatment from the staff again was superb. I highly recommend Dr. Catalano to anyone who is looking for a dentist. He is absolutely wonderful as is everyone there. If I could give 100 stars, I would read more

Great dental practice- very professional and thorough.

Is this as good as a dentist gets? Lets take a moment to find out. (If you don't want to read the whole review, the answer is YES) 1) I've been to many a dentists since I was a young child. I've gone through wisdom teeth ops, to retainers pushing my teeth out, to braces for five years, to numerous x-rays, moldings, drillings, fillings, and dental cleanings. I have to say, Montclair Smile Design, and in particular Dr. Chris Pham, is THE best dentist I've ever met. The quality and thorough knowledge of his expertise makes going to the dentist a true learning, unstressed experience (I was given the option to listen to my ipod while they worked on my teeth as a means of comfort). 2) Have you ever gone to a dentist and had trouble understanding what it is they were planning to do with your precious teeth? Not at Montclair. Dr. Pham is really knowledgeable and will do his best to make sure you understand what it is that needs to be done to keep your smile shining. 3) Another great attribute of Dr. Pham is he will do his best to make the dental session as pain free as possible. 4) In addition, the staff (front desk, dental assistants, and hygienists) are some of the most polite, helpful, and experienced people you will ever meet. The professionalism that Dr. Pham exhibits is definitely passed down through the whole office. 5) The dental office itself holds the latest technology and tools. Its nice to know that Montclair Smile Design has stretched great lengths to bring this to the customer. 6) The scheduling and timing of the appointments is probably the most fastest I've ever experienced. I barely waited in the waiting room when I came in for my appointments. And i was early. 7) And as a nice little perk, there's a small fridge in the wait room that holds free bottled water ;) In all, I definitely recommend Dr. Chris Pham and Montclair Smile Design to anyone looking for a new dentist. The dental work you can have done here in my experience is fine. They are competent and thorough. What you don't get here is warmth or care or anything like a human experience. Probably if you're young and healthy and don't need much beyond standard twice a year dental work this is a good option. And I mean that sincerely--this is a good dental office for uncomplicated people. But if you need healthcare--if you need someone to understand that there's an actual person attached to your teeth--this isn't the place for that. They really just need you to open your mouth and let them work. They're not rude or mean--they are just too busy to deal with your messy needs and feelings. At some point maybe there will be a dentistry app and Montclair Smile Design will be perfectly suited to be the anonymous fingers cleaning your teeth while you sleep. Till then though--me and my complicated body and feelings will go elsewhere. read more

I had been going to Dr. Becker's office for a good 15 years or so. There were never any issues or problems or anything. But toward the end of my tenure there, one of the dental assistants, Tara, started to become very snappy and rough with me. Even when she called out my name, she was very snappy. I did not know where all of this was coming from. So, I grew very uncomfortable with her, especially when she wanted me to collect my temporary crown just the day before my Italy trip. I thought to myself, that was rather risky and why would she suggest that? So, when I suggested I come to have it fitted one week prior to, she screwed up by not having it ready. She knew I lived at least 45 minutes away because the office staff reminded her. So, when I came a couple of days after that, she screwed up again by accidentally breaking it. So, I had to come back again! I couldn't believe it, but I did not complain because I don't like to 'rock the boat.' So, I was actually stuck taking a chance collecting it just two days prior to my trip anyway, like she wanted in the first place. Then I began to request that I did not want this dental assistant to assist me on future appointments. So, Angela, started assisting me. I could see something in her eyes that she was not crazy about me, but I overlooked it. All was well for a while during the first couple of times I went for my appointments and she helped me. But when I had the Zoom treatment, Angela failed to mention the post pain and she acted like all was well and that the treatment worked on my teeth. She knew damn well that there was no difference in my teeth, but it was overly obvious she was doing her best to pacify me. That weekend, especially the night of the Zoom treatment, I really thought I was going to have to go the ER. And shortly after, I started seeing movie stars complain about the same thing! So, I knew it wasn't just me. I emailed the office a couple of times and Ms. Angela took her sweet time responding, while I was suffering, I asked what their refund policy was. I really just desired some acknowledgment of my situation. She finally responded and a couple of emails later, she said she would have to check with Dr. Becker to refund me. So, they decided to do so. A couple of weeks later, I received a mail certified receipt letter indicating that I was being 'cast out' from their office and to not come back. Can you believe this?!? I was beyond shocked because, like I said, I had been a patient of Dr. Becker's for a good 15 years and this just came out of nowhere. I'd hate to say it was racial towards black folks, but a lot of office staff hate life so much, they will do whatever they can to ensure that black folks do not patronize nice establishments. I really think this was a tag team between Tara and Angela, and their mission was to get me out of there at any cost, even if meant pulling straws to try their best to paint me out to be the 'boogy woman.' I am still in shock and just imagine the my hurt. read more

If you're interested in world-class dentistry that uses state-of-the-art equipment and and practices in a clean, efficient and pain-free environment, then this is your practice! I have gone to Dr. Becker for years and love her, but because of scheduling issues I transitioned to her partner Dr. Catalano who is also totally amazing. They are both at the top of their game - true craftsman! They work efficiently with enormous precision in a caring and focused environment. Finally, what I also appreciate about this practice is that they never keep you waiting. Conveniently located in Montclair with parking provided, their prices are a bit higher than other practices, but they take insurance, and their work is impeccable; well worth the extra cost. Also they have terrific hygienists! I highly recommend this practice to anyone who cares about the longevity of their teeth and their smile! read more

BEWARE OF THIS DENTIST. Dr. Becker is incredibly RUDE. I have found that her dental charges are much, much higher than other dentists in the area. I personally don't mind paying more if the services are above par, and when I saw her partner, Dr. Pham, he was fine, but he left. When I saw Dr. Becker, she offered me up insults and condescension with her consult. I would not recommend her to anyone. She insisted on additional services that did not seem necessary, and were very costly. RUDE, OVERLY EXPENSIVE, NOT RECOMMENDED. read more

Dr. Anne Becker is the WORST DENTIST EVER. I do not write yelp reviews, and I am writing this because I don't want anyone to go through what I went through with her. I had never had a cavity in my life and the first time I went to her she told me that I had several. I was skeptical, but got them filled because multiple members of my family have gone to her for years. After that, I switched dentists mainly because she was so rude. I showed the x-rays she had taken of my alleged cavities to two other dentist and they both said my teeth were problem free. The exact same thing happened to my father when she told him that he needed new crowns. Now no one in my family goes there because she is so terrible and greedy. Same thing that happened to Richard A. happened to me! Mine was $1000 over!!! During my treatment Dr. Pham quit the practice and the ball was dropped on my procedure which took a couple of steps and no one knew what was happening with my case. D. Becker finally finished my procedure and then I get a bill for $1100 when I was told my insurance was great and was not told I would have to pay this much. To make matters worse, my crown they put in fell out last night while I was watching TV, not eating anything. $1,000 crown just pops out?? Not cool, heading to a new dentist to try to repair. Dr. Becker and her entire staff have made the whole dental experience pleasant as opposed to terrifying, which is how I've always felt about going to the dentist. I've always had the "best" dental care, but I always suffered through cleanings and fillings and associated the dentist with a tortuous experience, but after my first visit to Smile Design I was amazed that it doesn't have to be like that. Dr. Becker has a real gift, and she can provide a pain-free dental experience. I see Ari, hygienist, for cleanings -another truly talented individual. Lindsay and the client service staff are extremely competent and professional and provide a white glove experience. I take better care of my teeth because the whole staff inspires me to, and I have a great smile as a result. read more

i come from a small town (los banos) where there was only 1 dentist for the longest time (of course, now there are a couple of more). i would drive 2 hours while i lived in the bay area to reap the benefits of my parents' covering my dental. when i got my first "real" job with medical & dental i was besides myself. i figured since they're paying, i might as well get the best. i called around, checked out websites & came upon montclair smile design. i wish i knew about the parking spot reserved for customers because parking is a bitch in this area, which caused my late arrival for my first appointment. walking up the stairs you see huge photos of people smiling & various quotes... a little intimidating. while in the sitting area, they have a little tv that continuously plays dental things - crowns, replacements, etc. - a little gross & more intimidating. the staff and dentists (anne becker & chris pham) are wonderful. this place was like being transported into a dentist's office in the jetsons compared to the office in los banos. computers every where, little mushroom sculptures outside the window (created by anne's husband), purple trays wrapped in plastic wrap, everyone knows your name & water bottles that you don't pay for. after the consultation i needed a lot of work - root canals and cavities. also, i need to floss, who doesn't. i'll take my free floss, please. thank you, and i'll see you in 6 months. read more

well worth the drive from south san jose to montclair. the office and staff (Dr. Chris Pham, DDS) is top notch and very professional. I have been to a few dental office in my time and none even comes close to the up to date technology and regards for patient safety. the office is clean, has free bottle water, great selection of magazines, clean restrooms, friendly staff and relaxing. Dr. Pham explain the reason for my visit and procedure in detail. I was very surprise how pain free the whole procedure went. Montclair Smile Design is highly recommended. read more
