I found this dentist when I was looking for emergency care for a couple teeth that needed extracting that were severely broken, and they were able to fit me in the next day, and get the teeth taken out shortly after. The dentist was very kind and was willing to work with me to get the work done as soon as possible, and not only was it very convenient because I live down the block, but I felt well cared for, and I believe this dentist goes above and beyond in terms of his empathy and understanding. Even though I don't like having to go to the dentist, I look forward to going back here for my main dental care! I've been to dentists in the past that would shame me which made me really feel uncomfortable about even going in for an appointment, but that was definitely not the case here! Dr. Haley is a dentist in his prime, with work ethics, professionalism, friendliness, and a pleasant, caring mannerism. His office is comfortable and cozy, with delightful jazz music playing in the background. Office staff members are all friendly and unobtrusive. The Dr. himself took the time to know me, examine my teeth in great detail, did not push for any unnecessary services, and answered all my questions with patience. I am incredibly grateful to Dr. Ruddell and his staff. My dentist was on vacation when I was suddenly struck with incredibly uncomfortable gum pain. Dr. Ruddell's office stayed open late to fit me in same-day and put me at ease immediately. His hygienist (somehow?) made me laugh immediately, despite my distress. I was very happy with the work done here. Unfortunately, the charges came as a surprise. They did tell me that I was covered through my insurance. They overlooked my specific insurance plan was unusual, so the coverage was largely not applicable to the charges. That said, I think this is a common problem with my insurance. read more

I've been going to Dr. Ruddell for almost 25 years (yikes) and have recommended him to several friends and family. Unfortunately, I have pretty bad teeth -- despite all my brushing, flossing and fluoride treatments. Just my bad genetic luck: I've had 12+ root canals and my (18 months younger) brother has only had one cavity in his entire life! Because of my history, I saw many dentists before a friend recommended Dr. Ruddell to me. I have complete confidence in him. His technical skills are great and once you get to know him, he and his assistant Alexis, will have you doubled over with jokes. Irena in the front office is great, too. I strongly discourage new patients to consider this practice. I waited 6 weeks for an appointment, which was confirmed in a call with Irina on 10/1 only to arrive at my November appointment and there was no record of my appointment. This after paying for parking and childcare to get to my appointment. The schedule is all on paper and they have extremely poor record keeping, obviously. The best they could offer was another appointment 6 weeks later. No thank you. This office needs to get its act together. Very disappointing. read more

I found Dr. Ruddell by way of a bicycle accident. Cruising down Marin in North Berkeley, time slowed as a car pulled across my lane. The driver turned and mouthed 'Oh, Shit'. I skidded, braced, and smashed into her window. My bicycle, which took the brunt of the impact, died a valorous death. My chin, which hit next, was a bloody mess. I had fragments of tooth in my mouth, and needed an emergency dentist. Two days later Dr. Ruddell was able to see me. He made a quick evaluation of the damage, and advised a gold crown to repair a large chip on a molar and patch fillings for several smaller dings. He was patient with my questions as to the rationale for each procedure (for example, gold is softer than your teeth are, so a gold crown won't grind down its opposing tooth), and kept me informed as to what I might expect going forward. The work was done within two weeks. A year on, the crowned tooth started throbbing, first a little bit, then with an intense consistency that couldn't be ignored. Dr. Ruddell had told me that traumatized teeth sometimes decide to give up the ghost long after their initial injury, and by the time I called in to schedule an appointment, I was pretty sure I'd be needing a root canal. The good doctor was able to see me the very same day, and walked me through the various scenarios. My X-ray didn't show the telltale signs of a rejected tooth, but my symptoms matched up. He said that the pain might subside on its own, but that if it didn't they were there for me. After gritting through another week, I made a call to schedule the procedure. Molar root canals have a bad reputation, as one might expect of a procedure whose intent is to dig out a sizable chunk of nerve. Mine was no joy, but Dr. Ruddell made it tolerable. Properly Novocained, the procedure was completely painless. With two nerves nearly on top of one another, I had a particularly difficult tooth to work with, and the procedure took nearly three hours. However, the doctor and his assistant kept me informed of the situation throughout, and performed with a calm professionalism that left me confident in the work. After the operation, the doctor talked me through what they'd done and what I should expect. I got a phone call checking in the following day. I'd prefer to have avoided the dentist's office entirely, to have persisted in my tooth brushing without a need for professional advice. Having suffered serious tooth trauma, however, I'm thankful that dentists like Dr. Ruddell are out there. Highly recommended. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Ruddell for about 8 years, and my husband and his family have been going to him for longer than that. Though he is a bit far from where I live (San Ramon), he and his staff are worth the drive twice a year. What I appreciate most about Dr. Ruddell is that he has NEVER tried to tell me that I need some kind of special procedure like a "deep cleaning" or "grafts" and other crazy stuff other Drs have tried to sell me. He is kind, gentle, and HONEST. The other thing I love about his office is that they use an ultrasonic tool instead of the barbarian scraper tool that some other offices use to take off tartar. What a great way to start off the year! Looking for a Dentist who can change the quality of your life? Look no more, Dr. Donald Ruddell and his team had done just that for me! For more than 3 years I was suffering with TMJ "aka" Temporomandibular Joint Disorder. This made eating so difficult. I would wake up and my jaw felt like I've been chewing gum all night. I woke up misserable and went to sleep misserable. Then my life changed on October 2014. Dr. Ruddell recommended to do a Occlusal Analysis "study" of my teeth and learned that some repositioning of my teeth needed proper canine guidance and recommended an Occlusal Equilibration to make my bite more balanced. Having been a patient of Dr. Ruddell's for 6+ years now I can clearly attest to the high quality of care that he provides. When work on one's teeth is necessary he does it with careful and thorough attention to detail. This plus his friendly but soft spoken manner projects a sense of calm confidence which is reassuring to the patient. Although he is quite busy, he accommodated me with a walk in appointment on one occasion when a tooth of mine cracked wide open. The hygienist whom I see is equally thorough and caring. Dr. Ruddell's fees are probably somewhat higher than many other dentists are. But the quality of the services that the Doctor and his staff provide make it well worthwhile. This isn't really a fair review because I thought Dr Kaiser and his assistant My were great!!! I was so excited after my first appointment to have my whole family come to this practice!! So I give them a 5 star, but the office manager led me astray when I called and asked if they took my insurance and then when I arrived I gave them all of my policy info, so was very surprised to get a bill a month later saying nothing was covered, not even a dollar, and I had only preventative care. When I called to discuss with the office manager, she said it was my fault I didn't know the policy I had and that she was sure she would have told me which of the delta dental plans they take (which never happened). I wish she has been more kind and had understood why I felt so shocked that I had to pay for the services in full and wish she would have worked with me to get some coverage since I assumed that "they take my insurance" meant it would be covered. It wasn't that much money ($188 total) but I am disappointed that this experience will keep me and my husband from using this practice for many years to come. read more
