Revising my review here - I wanted to bring my glasses back here and have a new prescription put on them. I had gotten the glasses there and she gave me a crazy quote on the phone. It was a really discouraging quote - over $600 to have it done. I am getting it done for $120 somewhere else with no problem. It was evident to me that she did not want to do it for me and could not be bothered and told me that to make me go away. Pretty poor. I will not be going back there. read more

This was my first time coming across this store and meeting Julia the owner . I Simply was walking by and noticed some cool frames and was super excited to purchase and order some frames . But after my encounter with Julia the owner , I will never ever go back nor would i recommend this place to anyone . Julia was very discriminatory and rude . Your Better off going to another optical location with less judgmental and bias customer service unless your a regular customer . Julia made me feel very uncomfortable and accused me of taking pictures of the set up of the store and then explained she had " girls " who've taken pictures of the store before and was then robbed. Meanwhile if you check the Montclair optical Facebook there are whole videos of the layout of her store and pictures that she took .... While Julia was with one customer I didn't even get a " Hello , how are you "when I walked in. When I started viewing the store I took some pictures of the frames she stopped me and then said do you have a question ? I said to her no ... I would love to order some frames , is that ok ? she sort of gave me a blank stare and gave off this hesitated and confused look . She then proceeded to say yes you can , but is there a reason your taking pictures ? I then said I wanted to show my partner because he was at work (: She continued to give me this strange look and said you can only take pictures with the glasses on and not of the glasses themselves . After almost 26 years of wearing and purchasing frames I never heard this before , so this was a new experience to me which is completely fine but I was definitely offended . She said oh yeah well I've had girls come in and take pictures of the set up of the store and then was completely robbed the next day . Basically accused me of attempting to do these acts in the future . Not sure what that has to do with me since I'm a new customer. Since I've never needed to steal glasses frames nor Have I ever in my life . She then stated I don't mean to offend you I've just had it happen before . It's honestly very unfortunate on how she acted and treated me in this situation. The owner should definitely reevaluate and find a better way to approach and speak to customers in these type of situations . The frames were super cute and it would have been such a great find being since I come here often to attend the farmers market and drop of film across the street .But very bias and strange behavior on the Owners part . Do better and good luck . Here's are some tips on how to practice Better customer service . Step 1 . Greet your customer with a warm smile and positive attitude. Step 2. Tell your customer if you have any questions please feel free to ask . Step 3 . Proceed to tell your customer , if you would like to take pictures of the frames , please try them on so you can get a better look of they would feel . Step 4 . Reassure and ask customer how they are doing . Step 5 . Do not discriminate or hold bias against any person or persons Here's is why discrimination is harmful towards people . Julia was so friendly and awesome. She didn't rush the sale at all. In fact, I found a new pair of frames that I loved and she said she wouldn't sell them to me until I got my eyes checked. That's amazing discipline. And very impressive care for the customer. I did in fact go to get my eyes checked, and I'm so glad she had me do that because my eye prescription changed. My eyes slightly degraded from the last assessment. So now I'll be headed back to Julia to get that pair of glasses with the correct prescription. Thanks so much! read more

I had the same experience as other 1-2 star ratings with the Montclair office (not the one on college). The owner who works in the Montclair location is pretty rude and uninviting. IDK who gave her the good reviews but clearly the owner, "Julia" has two sides and you might catch the customer friendly one or the one that clearly has personal issues they take out on customers - I got that one the day I visited. So many other optical stores you could try, no need to put yourself in a negative environment when there are plenty of better options. read more

I'd been in the market for new frames for months with no luck. After visiting several eyewear shops, and also looking online, I tried Montclair Optical. The experience was delightful. Julia paid close attention to my preferences. She made suggestions that I would have never considered to discover a frame that I really liked. I did not feel rushed or pressured to make a purchase. The price was comparable to other shops. I have a high prescription that could look thick and distorted if not given specific treatment. They came out perfect. I am very pleased. I have visited several high end optical stores looking for something unique. I visited Montclair Optical and was very impressed with the wonderful selection of high end glasses. The owner was very nice and took her time with me to show me a wide selection of glasses. She was honest and didn't try and sell me the most expensive pair I was considering instead she recommended the pair that looked the best on me. Yes, it was expensive but I won't see myself walking down the street. I can't wait to get my new glasses with a custom clip on instead of prescription sunglasses. I will be going back to purchase another pair of glasses as a back. You won't be disappointed with her selection, warmth, expertise and wonderful customer service. read more

About 4 years ago, I bought a pair of glasses from here. They were super fashionable and cute and I really loved them. On top of that, the execution of my prescription was the best I've ever had - I could see perfectly. Really quality work - not cheap, but so amazing. Fast forward to my next prescription change. I decided to go for budget frames and budget lenses. I then spent two years hating them. When I got my last update, I skipped the budget company, grabbed my old frames and went back to Montclair Optical. Julia was great. She was able to reuse my old frames and put new lenses in and I am back in love. This is not the cheapest place to go, but if you want quality work, cute selection of frames and you want to see really, really well - this is the spot! read more

I initially went to visit this shop and was quite impressed by the comprehensive inventory of higher end brand frames. The selection was large, considering the overall modest size of the store footprint and the frame types that the shop owner carried all spoke to customers that are looking for style, elegance & sophistication. The range spanned "look at me" to "conservative sleek". Best of all, the pricing was very competitive for this level of quality. When I returned with my wife, several weeks later, we experienced a very customer focused exchange with the owner (Guilia) who deftly guided us through the maze of more choices than our budget allowed and helping us land on 3 frames that "spoke to us." After couple of days, my wife had buyers remorse on one of her 2 frames; so we returned it with no issues. So, for the 3 factors that are most important...product inventory, pricing & service, I give Montclair Optical top marks on all three. read more

I really had my heart set on some new Tom Ford eyeglass frames. I went to TomFord.com and the website said this place sold them so I drove to see the inventory. I walked in and the owner asked me what I was looking for and I told her "Tom Ford" eyeglasses. She instantly told me that SHE doesn't really carry a lot of designer because people she sells to like quality and luxury frames and that all I know are designer and that I really need to do my research. I was shocked at how her comments made me feel. I'm no expert about frames and that really shouldn't matter if I wanted Tom Fords. She went on disrespecting me with one comment after another until she made me feel horrible. Here are some quotes: "You only have hard of designer names, you really need to do your research and get educated about the eyeglass industry" "You've probably never heard of dita or Matsuda have you? or this brand, right" "I have people come in that know these brands because this is what people with money buy" "I know the difference between a $100 dollar shirt and a $1000 dollar shirt" "You really don't know anything about eyeglasses" It's hard for me to believe this little boutique has any cliental - but I guess if your Rich and Famous she's the one that will help you and if you don't wear a $1000 dollar shirt then get ready to be offended by comments like the ones above. Trust me, I will NEVER spend a dollar at this location, I will tell all my friends and family how horrible this place is, and I hope she learns how to position statement, educate clients nicer, and not be so judgmental. Great selection of non-Luxotica (sp?) brands! Prices are what I would expect from a boutique shop, but far cheaper than some that I have seen. The best thing about the shop is Julia. She is an expert in her craft and one of the best providers I have experienced. I explained what I was looking for and she brought out specific pieces that she thought matched. We quickly narrowed down to a couple of frames and settled on them. I think the thing appreciated most was her ability to provide thoughtful advice regarding what looked good and what looked bad on me. I have been in too many shops where I wonder if something complements me or not and the sales rep is like: Oh that tube too is SO you. No offense meant against tube tops- but let's just say it's not a good look for me. Anyway - great experience and will definitely go back when I want another pair. read more

I spent $900 on a pair of glasses yesterday. nine. hundred. dollars. I'm in shock certainly, but I looked at Kaiser and Costco (my go to places for glasses) and they had shite. I went to a few boutique-y places and nothing. Then I stopped in to Montclair Optical - nearby to Farmstead Cheeses and Wines, the Cheesemonger's new shop in Montclair, and these glasses sang out to me, beckoning like a mermaid on the rocks. I tried them on, perfect. I left. I came back and tried them on again. I waited two days (like you do when you purchase a handgun) and then brought Mrs. Cheesemonger in to see them. She approved. Now they're mine (or will be in 2 weeks). Thanks to the very friendly and professional staff, and I can't believe that no one has reviewed this place before......they've only been in the village for 25 years....... read more

The best selections of eyewear that I've found! Glasses to me are accessories that must make me and my outfit look good. So, i don't skimp on style and cost. So, it means a few less latte's, oh well, I deserve to look good :-) Julia, takes her time with every customer and even when I'm uncertain, her sense of style helps in selecting the perfect pair of glasses for me every single time! After disappointedly leaving the eyeglass frame store around the corner, I walked over to this one. Here, I felt immediately welcome, even with my four-year-old and 18 month-old in tow, which says something in a tiny store full of breakable frames! I wear my glasses everyday. All the time. I have a very narrow face and my eyes are close together. Finding glasses that look good on my face used to be a prolonged, painful experience. Then I met Julia . She is so good at finding glasses for me and has the most beautiful selection, that I can't go anywhere else. I won't go anywhere else. Yes, Montclair Optical is expensive. I have NEVER been so poorly treated by a retailer. I purchased a pair of glasses (quite overpriced at $860) as well as three pair of sunglasses totaling app. $700. You'd think that after spending close to $1600 within a year that the owner would have the decency to listen to me when I told her that the wrong prescription was put in my glasses. She literally hung up on me. I ended up having my optometrist correct the issue (as I would either have had to go to small claims court to rectify the problem or go elsewhere), and I will obviously never shop at Montclair Optical again. read more
