Very disappointing experience with Portland Thai Boxing…read more I wanted to train while I was visiting Portland and PDX Thai Boxing seemed like an awesome spot. I emailed the gym to ask about waivers/drop-in fee but didn't receive a response. I figured I could handle everything when I got the the gym. Once I got to Portland I decided to take the 10am Monday class. After spending the money to take a Lyft to the gym, I get there and no one was at the front desk. Someone pointed me towards one of the coaches and I asked him about a drop-in fee. The coach informed me that PDX Thai Boxing doesn't do drop-in's because of Oregon Covid policies. Apparently I was supposed to sign up for some online portal that would've let me sign up for class. Since I didn't sign up, I couldn't train. The coach informed me that there was a phone number I could call to talk to someone and then asked me to leave the gym (he wasn't mean or disrespectful about it). I called the number and got a voicemail. The coach was doing his job and the policy is this policy, but it sucked to get turned away from the gym. I should've called ahead, that was my mistake. Overall, the whole experience felt really bad. The worst part is that the gym looked really nice! If you're looking to train here make sure you call ahead or you might get turned away.

The gym itself is in what feels like a basement. It is small and cramped. There were only three of us in there at the time but I couldn't imagine it on a busy day. I signed up for a free week trial membership. Which is a lovely perk to offer potential new clients. Upon arriving I was given a tour by the person at the front desk. She made sure that before she took me downstairs she found someone to cover her at the front desk. About half way through the tour a woman, I'm assuming manager, came over to us holding a laundry basket. Before saying hi or introducing herself she basically scolded the woman giving me the tour saying "who is watching the front desk if you're down here? I'll finish the tour and you can go back upstairs". At that point this manager woman put on a big fake smile and introduced herself to me and then finished the tour. This interaction alone immediately told me this was not the gym for me. It may be a women's only gym but it didn't provide the feeling of women supporting women. The gym itself is honestly, depressing. No windows. No softness. It's a basement with workout equipment. I chose not to return for remainder of the free trial and certainly wouldn't spend $75 a month to go there.

Being part of an all women's gym has given me a sense of discipline and empowerment. All the women I've met have been really supportive. The facility is really clean too, with showers and a sauna. Reasons why my review is three stars: - In less than a year, two separate classes got their instructor changed THREE times. There seems to be a lot of turnover amongst the staff and while it's inconvenient to my workout schedule, it makes me wonder what's happening behind the scenes that causes sooo much turnover. - I wish there was an option to rent your own locker. I take public transit so it's difficult to lug around all my work/gym/clean clothes. Paying an additional fee for a rented locker would make life so much easier. - I would love either a free/reduced membership for people of the BIPOC community. Or a free weekly/monthly class for BIPOC women. I'm usually the only WoC in my classes and it can feel uncomfortable at times.

It was the first time in my life I was able to do splits and really apply my ability to defend myself. Though my philosophy on self-defense / combat has changed considerably through my current practices of Jeet Kune Do, I still have a lot of respect for those who take the time to practice some aspect of self-defense. It's awesome for fitness and provides some level of self-discipline while channeling a whole new level of self-confidence. The process of belt promotions and facilities maintenance is sure to have changed since I first attended years ago. There were all sorts of students ranging from various ages and an even number of boys and girls. Prices were modest back then and are likely to be significantly higher now. Just remember that engaging in any type of martial arts is going to be pricey, it just depends on how what you might consider reasonable. For those who are looking for something different and a nice way to get fit, I encourage those in the area to seek Dave to begin a new journey in martial arts.

I have been working with some very accomplished and decorated coaches in every discipline, this includes Olympic level boxing from Andy Minsker, black belt jiu jitsu instructers from the 10th Planet Team, Muay Thai professional coaches, All American Wrestling coaches, UFC/Bellator fighters, strength coaches etc. Not only are the coaches very knowledgeable and helpful, but the other students/teammates include some of the most accomplished mixed martial artist around, including Mike Pierce (UFC), Dave Jansen (Bellator), Pat Healy (UFC) plus many other professional and amateur fighters. In terms of MMA schools, this has to be like the Harvard or Yale of schools. The facility is pretty amazing and is filled with tons of well kept equipment including a full cage, huge mat area, various thai bags, etc. There is also quite a few people there for general fitness, and there are beginner and newbies as well, so it is very friendly for all people and everyone is welcome, but the gym does seem to attract some serious talent. However, it is not the just the skill level of the coaches and other students that keeps me coming back to this gym. ....I keep coming back because of the positive gym culture. This is like a unique and upbeat learning environment of teamwork, friendship, and camaraderie. If I could think of a drawback, I think a beginner may feel self conscious initially because of the many experienced students. However, when people stick that out, they will develop very rapidly and have a ton of fun doing it.

The front desk staff is always really nice, and the trainers seem awesome overall. I can definitely recommend mine, Will. He's knowledgeable, astute, goal-focused, and encouraging. It also feels like a genuinely respectful space. I haven't seen anyone leering or acting like a jerk - quite the opposite. And people are good about reracking weights and wiping down equipment. Parking can be a little bit of a situation at times, and people sometimes seem to wait around for spots for some reason, but there's actually plenty of parking diagonally across the street in the garage. Street parking is also often free or just a couple of bucks, so it's very manageable once you know the options. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this spot. Great vibe, great trainers, and solid equipment. There's even a hot tub in the locker room. It's not a polished, spa-looking place, but honestly that's part of the charm. I'd much rather deadlift somewhere with personality than in a lifeless beige box.
