A bar, with plates on it.
    Constantino K.

I've been a member here for a little over a year. The main reason I joined was that it's close to my house. But the reason I've stayed is that it really is a great gym--there are a couple big chain gyms within blocks of my office which on some days would actually be even more convenient. So why do I say it's a great gym? It has everything someone serious about their fitness needs. The equipment is all new-ish, well maintained, and thoughtfully acquired. They have everything you need for any type of workout from metcons to powerlifting. Do you like CrossFit-type workouts, but don't want to pay CrossFit prices, and have the knowledge and motivation to curate your workouts on your own? This is the gym for you. There are plenty of rowing machines, medicine balls (and boards for wallballs), kettlebells, ab mats, boxes for box jumps, ropes for climbing, rubberized plates and floors so you can drop the bar after a heavy lift, and more racks in the lifting area than the big box gym in the Pearl where I used to work out--at least at the time I go, I don't think I've ever had to wait for a rack to open up. I use the sauna almost every day, so that's another thing I'm glad they have. I don't do classes, but there seems to be a wide offering, and their cardio machines cover all the basics. Beyond all that, though, I have to say one of the things I appreciate most about the gym is the fact that they are constantly making improvements that aren't urgent or even very necessary, but which tell me that the management takes pride in the gym. This matters. They didn't HAVE to replace the sinks in the locker room, for example, or paint the walls, or put in new tile, or get a nice curtain for the shower. But they've done all that. It shows love, and I think that makes for good energy.

Great gym -- plenty of machines, very clean and well maintained. Love the sauna and the staff is really helpful.

This place is dope. Not crowded. Lots of new and interesting equipment to play on! Other location is smaller but equally as cool!

The only gym I've ever stayed at for two+ years. Every machine you could ever need. Even at peak hours there's never a wait. Try it out.

After much finding in the Portland metro area, we were SO HAPPY to stumble upon Intrepid. We go 2-3x a week for our schedules. The owners Ruth and Sean put in a tremendous amount of effort ensuring that every experience you have seems like you're a new client, when you show up each and every time, whether or not you've been going there for years or days. I appreciate the fact that they don't assume you just know everything and they really provide COACHING rather than passive guidance. They know each and every persons strength and weaknesses, and make everyone feel comfortable. I am also always astonished by the variety in the workouts, and all the coaches really provide great instruction, whether it's Ruth and Sean, the owners, or the other two coaches, everyone's amazing. You should come to Intrepid if you're looking for community as well. Everyone let's you be who you are but there's always opportunities to have pot lucks, celebrate people, and have fun during class or after class. Just come as you are, and at at whatever fitness level, you will be really glad you stepped into Intrepid. You'll never leave.

To me, there are "focus areas" for any gym business. Possible Priorities: 1. Member Safety 2. Quality Coaching 3. Business Process management 3a. Member confidentiality 3b. Staff management 4. Investment in new coaching skills and equipment 5. Quality Review and Continuous Improvement My "positive" experience at Intrepid relates to my multiple drop-in visits while in town on business. On each of my visits, I was received professionally and politely each time. My biggest concern, and gripe relates to an early November 2018 incident, where one of their staff sent out a "survey" to current and past members. Intrepid PDX openly published my email address to almost 700 people - instead of hiding it in a BCC to protect my privacy. I have followed up multiple times to the originator of the survey without response - or an apology. I've also requested my name be removed from Intrepid's database, and my request was also ignored. When I'm visiting Portland on business, I have several choices for CrossFit - and I was hoping Intrepid would be my gym-away-from-home. But I won't be back. While mistakes happen, I've reached out three times to the staff member and ownership to share my concerns and didn't receive a response. "Just remove my name and personal data from your database - if you cannot manage my personal information with discretion." That's all I can ask at this point - because your staff member already broadcast my email address to 700+ people. Oh, and she also broadcast the email addresses of every current and past customer I might add (Yikes!). Generally, from my experience, the customer list of any business is a sacred asset to be protected. I wonder, if I were to post the survey originator's email address here ... perhaps then she'll grasp the importance of privacy. Or at least be courteous enough to admit the mistake and remove my contact information from Intrepid's database.

The gym itself is in what feels like a basement. It is small and cramped. There were only three of us in there at the time but I couldn't imagine it on a busy day. I signed up for a free week trial membership. Which is a lovely perk to offer potential new clients. Upon arriving I was given a tour by the person at the front desk. She made sure that before she took me downstairs she found someone to cover her at the front desk. About half way through the tour a woman, I'm assuming manager, came over to us holding a laundry basket. Before saying hi or introducing herself she basically scolded the woman giving me the tour saying "who is watching the front desk if you're down here? I'll finish the tour and you can go back upstairs". At that point this manager woman put on a big fake smile and introduced herself to me and then finished the tour. This interaction alone immediately told me this was not the gym for me. It may be a women's only gym but it didn't provide the feeling of women supporting women. The gym itself is honestly, depressing. No windows. No softness. It's a basement with workout equipment. I chose not to return for remainder of the free trial and certainly wouldn't spend $75 a month to go there.

Being part of an all women's gym has given me a sense of discipline and empowerment. All the women I've met have been really supportive. The facility is really clean too, with showers and a sauna. Reasons why my review is three stars: - In less than a year, two separate classes got their instructor changed THREE times. There seems to be a lot of turnover amongst the staff and while it's inconvenient to my workout schedule, it makes me wonder what's happening behind the scenes that causes sooo much turnover. - I wish there was an option to rent your own locker. I take public transit so it's difficult to lug around all my work/gym/clean clothes. Paying an additional fee for a rented locker would make life so much easier. - I would love either a free/reduced membership for people of the BIPOC community. Or a free weekly/monthly class for BIPOC women. I'm usually the only WoC in my classes and it can feel uncomfortable at times.
