When you think of Maryland, don't think of the beltway. Maryland is really beautiful. We discovered the Monocacy Aqueduct by accident. It was my turn to be the passenger while the elder child practiced driving. We were f=driving along the Maryland Route 28 which becomes a scenic route once we cross Gaithersburg into Darnestown. Farms, greenery (it's spring) etc. We spotted the sign by the National Park for the Monocacy Aqueduct. So glad that the color of the signs for places to see are distinguishable. Its about a 2 mile winding road from Route 28 to the Monocacy Aqueduct. Seems like a lot of parking and restrooms. A good bike path and walking trails. There is a boat dock and water seems serene. This place has historic importance having warded off the Conferderate Army who wanted to destory this aqueduct. A full day family trip would be enjoyable. Bring your own food and take back your trash.

The 2nd of 11 aqueducts along the chesapeake and Ohio canal. This beautiful aqueduct is well taken care of by the National park service. The grounds surrounding the aqueduct are beautifully and professionally maintained and there is a boat ramp for the boaters on the Potomac and Monocacy Rivers . :) Rivers. Superintendant Kevin Brandt and his crew do an excellent job of taking care of the Monocacy Aqueduct and the entire C & O canal.

This a great little get away place on the Potomac rich in history from the early days in America. This is the last complete aqueduct that once carried the C&O canal from Cumberland MD to DC, this was the predecessor to the rail road. I carried necessary supplies to help build this county. Walking through the aqueduct much of it was restored and rebuilt. Not surprising since the Confederate Army tried to destroy it in the civil war. Bring your fishing rods and a picnic along with your dog for a nice day on or along the river.

Let me give some mad respect to whomever dug out the spot to put in a rather large parking area for us! For years we've been on side of this narrow dirt road. * Thank. (Virtual fist pump). This was 3 miles out and 3 miles back. The waterfall is around 1 mile mark. It's off to the right. *please understand, ricks are slippery whether they're wet ot not. How someone brings three toddlers here with no backpack, water or first aid is beyond me. I had to leave the area. But it was really nice. Very relaxing and you did have to hand/foot climb to get up there. Be careful please. I double backed and got on the A.T. Couple more miles to the secret cliff I saw in another Yelp post. :) . Lots of people walked by, no one knew I was there. I had it all to myself. Its better than the actual lookout. Anyway. I scanned the rocks for danger, shot some pics and sat down for water and dry crackers. I look over and there are 2 snakes curled up by a small tree about 6 feet from me. I spoke to them. "Thought you'd hide from me. I got you!" It was funny. I took a couple pics and kept my eyes on them. Only takes a second to lose track and they end up right at me saying, "HA got you back!" I sat a while then headed back down. I enjoyed it! I'd like to section hike and have a car waiting to take me back to my own car where I started. They should have an Uber Hikes App available for that. ;) This way I can hike for as far as I want without turning around to come straight back.

There are a lot of rocks to walk and shift over, a few fallen trees you have to sorta climb over. (Not too hard) Those steps however, MAN! Them things will take you out! Lol. There were plenty of areas to stop for breaks though so do it your own pace. Everyone there was very friendly and few shared very helpful tips! Overall a great experience, and as crazy as it sounds, I do it again! Something to think about though...I wore shorts, but I would suggest wearing pants. Someone I was with kept getting these green spiky things stuck to them and I have no idea what that was but it's a no. Also, if you have some hiking shoes or boots wear those. Trying to walk on rocks and walk downhill you might slide a little bit. You want to have some sort of stability. Last they have these, for a lack of better word, hiking sticks that a lot of other hikers had that seem to be very helpful from what one of them told me I would suggest getting a pair of those as well. I hear they have them at Costco.

We headed to Sugarloaf Mountain, and it was just as refreshing for the soul as I remembered. I won't go on too long since I've shared my love for this place before, but it truly is one of my favorite hiking spots, that now holds a special place in my heart bc it is the first hike we've completed with my 3yr old son on my back. The trails are well-marked, complete with info on distance and difficulty levels. If you make it to the Summit area--the very top--you're in for some breathtaking views!

I stopped by on a warm, sunny October Sunday morning while in the area for the National Apple Harvest Festival (about 30 minutes away), and somehow had the whole place to myself. It was so peaceful--just the sound of leaves rustling in the breeze and the occasional thud of acorns falling from the trees. The walk in is short and easy--basically a flat stroll past a couple of informational signs to reach the boulder outcropping. From there, the fun begins! Hammonds Rocks is about 400 feet long, with massive stone formations to climb, wander, and explore. I spent about 45 minutes hopping from stone to stone, taking photos, and checking out different angles of the formations. Even without climbing, there are plenty of spots to enjoy the view, though the tall trees do block some of it. Still, with the leaves just starting to turn to their fall colors, it was absolutely beautiful. The info signs are worth a pause, too--they really put things into perspective. One noted that when the sediments making up these rocks were deposited, the spot where I was standing was on the shore of a great ocean...530-600 MILLION years ago. Wild. Absolutely mind blowing! As for access: don't panic when Google Maps tells you the next few miles are unpaved. The gravel road is manageable if you take it slow and keep an eye out for some monster ruts. (Speaking from experience: this 40-something woman in her beloved Alfa Romeo made it just fine.) Just don't attempt in winter without knowing what you're getting into--the roads aren't maintained in snow or ice. Overall, Hammonds Rocks is an easy, low-effort, high-reward stop. Whether you're climbing, photographing, or just taking in the history and scenery, it's a great way to spend part of your day in Michaux.
