While this won't be the best burger you have ever tasted, it is *perfect* road trip food. It's walk up only and while service is abrupt - it's all in the name of getting your food quickly which I appreciate! Burgers and chicken nuggets were good and fries were OK. Portion sizes are great for the prices and there are small clean restrooms on the back of the building. Plenty of parking in the area and you can also walk to the "upside down house" just down the block. read more

I took a quick weekend jaunt up to Mammoth to break the monotony of "stay at home". We drove to different sites, wore our masks and social distanced responsibly when out and about. It was hot and someone said ice cream. Uh, HECK YEAH! This was my first time here. Apparently, based on the line and crowd out in front, this is THE ice cream place to be. Of the maybe 30 or so bodies standing in the parking lot, there was only one douchebag in line that was rude and didn't respect those around him. My last words are going to be this. On the way to Mono Lake to get some cool shots of milky way but before that we needed to recharge for an awesome night! Stopped by this little place called Mono Cone. Not much of a choice in this quaint little city and so we decided to try it! CASH ONLY. I had 22 bucks, my friend has 4 and my other friend has 14 so in short, we were on a budget. Upon reading the reviews, I learned that their ice cream cone here is a winner so I had my eyes on it. I ordered pastrami cheeseburger and an ice cream cone half and half dipped in blue raspberry. My friends got the Philly cheesesteak and bacon cheeseburger and ice cream cones! Guess what our total is.... 39.52! Just right on the budget!!! On to the food.... i liked mine a lot. The burger was heavy. Very heavy that the net day, I decided to skip on breakfast. It was tasty and of good size. I got it for 6.75 (?) dollars and it was worth it! The ice cream cone was good too!! It was not too sweet and it was creamy. The raspberry dip sure added a kick in the flavor. The day has come when I have no choice but to remove Mono Cone from the locals' best. Today we went for our Weekend run from Mammoth to get ice cream; pretty standard Sunday. I ordered the Usual "two small cones,"  dipped or sometimes with the flavor burst, today it was the latter. However, there was a small error in the order; no big deal, right?  Well, that's where today got weird. Instead of remaking the $4.75 cone, which more than likely cost a fraction of the price I paid for it. They told me my options were; 1) Get back in line and reorder the correct ice cream for an additional $4.75 (half of the cost for two cones $9.50) or 2) Get back in line for a refund (what!!). They gave us the option because the line was about 15-20min and assumed we would leave with no money and no correction to our order. SO... I got back in line for a refund, 5 min in, they called us to the to-go window and gave us some change (less than what we paid), which ended today's saga. So in closing, They lost local business... Through away a product (trash) They gave back the money (kind of)  and made us feel like an inconvenience to their business. unfortunately, I tipped them first read more

They have special flavors like oreo peanut butter and bittersweet chocolate! These are some of my favorites! It is cash only but for one of those shakes I will make sure I have cash on hand. They also have an ATM machine in the back just in case you don't. Parking and seating can be a little sparse especially in the summer when they have a line wrapping around. read more

Stopped by here after a morning at Bodie, and ordered a chicken burger, fries and strawberry shake. None of the food disappoint. The grilled chicken patty was super delicious and moist, and the shake was so freaking good. I was too full to try their ice cream but next time I will definitely stop by. To me, the Eastern Sierra area of California is a magic place, as it features panoramic views, uncrowded spaces, lots of four wheeling/exploring, Mono Lake and more. It's a slice of heaven... especially when you're hungry and you're looking for an "old school" burger... Yes, you can get your "burger fix" at Mono Cone, located in Lee Vining, on the shore of beautiful Mono Lake. Note to all interested diners: Bring your green stamps, as this restaurant is "Cash only." You must consider you're in Lee Vining, CA, which may technically be in the same state as San Francisco or Los Angeles, yet you're world's away from the major population centers of the state. The restaurant does have a small dining room, which comes in handy during the sub-freezing weather that Lee Vining offers during the winter. On nice days, there is a spacious patio, in a garden setting, behind the restaurant, for your dining pleasure. The menu is posted outside, so you make your selection from the menu, pay at the order window, get a number, and you wait for your "number" to be called. In my case, from paying for my order to receiving it was around 10 minutes, so the service is very fast and efficient. When I visit a "new" restaurant, I like to start at the top of the menu, so that's what I did today at Mono Cone, as I ordered a "Hamburger and Fries," which are separate, from the top of the menu. I was thirsty, so I splurged and ordered a small Pepsi. The fries are separate, and you get a MOUNTAIN of them... you should consider sharing them with your friend. The fries are excellent, no way about it, as they're perfectly deep fried, golden brown on the outside, and chewy on the inside. They're cooked perfect, just the way I love my fries. Boy o boy, do I LOVE fries!!! The burger is "old school" all the way through, complete with Thousand Island dressing, mayonnaise, onion, tomato, pickle lettuce, and - of course - a perfectly cooked meat patty, on a fresh bun. Condiments, such as ketchup and mustard are available, but who needs them when you have such a delicious burger? The burger was definitely delicious, along with the fries, but I can't say that I was very impressed by the staff, who all seemed to be early "20-somethings" who seemed more interested in chatting with one another, or texting than serving burgers. When I asked the window gal for her photo, I got a really nice photo of the palm of her hand. I give the burger four stars, and the staff two stars, so it averages out to a very respectable and solid three-star restaurant. I definitely plan to return. Mono Cone serves a great burger, at a very reasonable price. If you're looking for a great burger in Lee Vining, look no further than Mono Cone. read more

This is a must-stop every time I go through Lee Vining. This trip I stopped twice in one trip. Once going north and once on the return trip 5 days later. In the past I have always ordered the cherry sundae because it is excellent and it is a flavor that most places don't carry. Every time I look at the menu board, the blackberry sundae calls to me. This time I had the cherry on the way north, and the blackberry on my return trip, along with (first time I've ever ordered anything other than ice cream) a very good Ortega cheeseburger. I was a little nervous for my most recent visit to Mono Cone. We were road-tripping and my wife had been sick all morning with blueberry barf. The sun was high, and she wasn't feeling like waiting too long in the heat. There was a line maybe 4 deep with a crowd of impatient sharks circling in the shade of the one tree out front. Didn't take too long to make it to the window. 2 large half and half cones dipped in blue (no idea what flavor blue is?). The busy young man at the counter was polite and efficient- he too busy for small talk, me, too hot and eager for chit chat. While the family burger crowd drooled and paced and got cranky under the shade tree, my order came up quick and was passed off with a brief but friendly "Thank you", more than I expected from a stressed kitchen crew working under the micro-scrutiny of impatient feeders. By the time I made it to the car, our melting confections were already breaking through their blue skins, making runs for our otherwise clean hands and fingers. I wish I could describe the smile in my wife's eyes as I handed over her towering treat. I think she knew she was about to be feeling much better? While you can sit right there and devour your cone in the car, do yourself a favor and race (not too fast of course) south to Tioga Road, turn into the Tioga Pass Gas Mart, and up the hill to the Mono Lake Vista Point. A perfect spot to be a child again making a mess of yourself with a blue-dipped Mono Cone. If you're lucky you'll be privy to some epic eavesdropping from your fellow vista visitors. One last important note- the cold blue-shelled cone somehow cured my wife's tummy troubles. Maybe it was the blue on blueberry, or maybe just something in the dry desert air? Who knows? Whatever the case, I'll certainly be stopping by Mono Cone again for more of that good, cold medicine. If I were you, I'd do the same. read more

Horrible service. This local spot has been ruined for me. I grew up in the area and went to Mono Cone to grab a burger and shake. I was really looking forward to it and ordered my favorite lemon shake. My order is called, and they gave me a mint chip shake. No big deal. I tell them I ordered lemon. The lady at the pick-up window tells me I ordered a mint chip shake and that they repeated it back. I did not hear the girl who took my order say mint chip. It's hard to hear through the window, especially with traffic running behind on 395. So I just told them again that I was trying to order a lemon shake. The lady tells me they don't have lemon as a flavor and asks me if I ordered lemon aide. I tell her no, I ordered a lemon shake and try asking her what other flavors I can order, and she tells me to wait and closes the window so I can no longer talk to them at all. I try to ask them through the other window if I can just get a refund. The girl who took my order rudely tells me I ordered mint chip, that she repeated it back to me, and that they've remade my shake twice now and hands me the lemon shake I wad told they didn't have. So confused. I try to go back and ask to speak to the manager, and the girl who took my order tells me she's the manager and continues to ignore me and call order numbers. I ask if I can talk to her since she's the manager and she continues to be rude and dismissive. I ask if I can have contact info for the owner, and she tells me she's the owner. That ends the conversation for me. I won't be visiting Mono Cone anymore. A popular spot that will continue to get a lot of business, but I'm sad to feel like I can no longer go to this once enjoyable stop. It's been ruined. read more

I absolutely love this stop. Found out about it last year when we were passing through the area and saw the huge line. Came for the second time last week and it was just as good as I remembered! Their burgers are fantastic. Just a tasty roadside burger that takes you back to your childhood. The milkshakes and and frosty cones also rock! If you're visiting Mono Lake or the eastern part of Yosemite National Park, stop here to get a soft serve ice cream cone - a small is $3 before tax but it's a lot of ice cream. You can get vanilla, chocolate, or vanilla/chocolate swirl! They also have yummy milkshakes and malts - lots of flavors, including oreo which is my favorite. There's also a food menu with burgers and sandwiches. I've had the spicy crispy chicken burger which is okay. I tried a bite of my friend's fish taco and it was good but very lemony. The food is satisfactory and it also takes a while for the food to come out - it's the ice cream that I come here for. Now passing through this little town, you would never think that a little burger joint would have some good ice cream (softee). Brought me back to some of our roadtrips stopping in small towns in the midwest. Smell of fried goodness running the shop, line down the sidewalk, and a menu that focuses on just satisfying your cravings. We grabbed a swirl with butter pecan flavoring, and one choco/vanilla twist. Both cones were nice and high, held their form and allowed your to enjoy the treat without melting too quick. This place will take you back which is why you will love it. They have lots to offer and perfect for a hot day. The lady at the counter is a non-nonsense type but she is very cool. You just feel like a kid waiting for your super sweet treat. Their soft serve is delicious, their sundaes huge, fries done just right... Yeah judge us, we went all out. We passed this place on our way to Yosemite from Mammoth and my man asked me if I wanted ice cream. What kind of a question is that?!? It's a tiny and old building with a walk up window and they have an adorable patio area in the back among many trees and flowers. He loved his chocolate dipped cone and I took a chance on something I'd never heard of, a vanilla cone with a lemon burst. Basically they swirl whatever flavor you'd like over your ice cream. I'm a lemon lover but didn't think it would work with vanilla but it did! A small size here is like a large anywhere else so keep that in mind and they offer even smaller portions for kids. I like the taste of their malt and wish it is more profound. I will probably enjoy their other flavors more. 3/5 Stars Burger are very much like In&Out: thin burger, crispy lettuce, juicy tomatoes. I frequented the Mono Cone for the last 20 years. The burgers fries the menu was all wonderful. What made it so great was the onions tomatoes and crisp lettuce and of course whatever sauce they put on Fabolous. Had a lunch there on Sunday for the first time since Covid. They are new owners and they obviously have not followed the wonderful freshness that was the Mono Cone. The tomato was so thin the onion was almost nonexistent and the lettuce was such a small piece and it was wilted. We ordered onion rings that were more breading then onion. And the young Lady who took the order and took the money was fairly rude about the whole thing. There was no one else in line before us and it took almost a half an hour to get our food. I miss the old Mono Cone. Oh well, there's always the Basin Cafe. read more
