Monkish has been on my #beerbucketlist for sure. I have a few beers that I cannot wait to visit in person. This was a huge one for me. I have only had one beer from them for a trade and it was excellent. We came on Friday and the parking lot was completely packed. We decided to check out Smog city and found it easier to park on the street over there and walk over to monkish. The place was popping for a late afternoon Friday. We tried 3 beers... all excellent. Monkish is back open babbbyyyy! One of the best breweries in town--both for the beer and the vibes. They recently added outdoor patio seating with their reopening and it has changed the game! Pre-covid their was limited seating in their tasting room, but now there's plenty. However, be warned, Monkish is still a popular spot, so get their a bit early if you want to score some seating otherwise, you'll be standing, which is still okay. In terms of beer, they're a great spot for an IPA lover (which is my friends and not me lol), but they also have some other options available (belgians, sours, seltzers, etc.). They also have a slusheeeesh (lol) seltzer, which is a great summer add. Note that they have a rotating food truck schedule which you can find on their website. Hazy, DDH heaven. Anything I say will not do justice to this sweet historic elixir that was safer to drink than water at some point in history. I finally made the pilgrimage November 19th picked up a case of pure magic and have since been a disciple of the church of Monkish. The name I assume, celebrates the original creators of beer. This is a cool small brewery that we found. It's not too hipster but it's also very trendy. Have had this place circled for a while to visit. Their beer is pretty hoppy (IBU greater than 40) and bitter tasting but that have a great body to it and a crisp, refreshing finish. Service was fantastic and they gave us really good recommendations on several beers that we didn't initially come in expecting to order. One of the hostesses also gave us a sample of one of the new beers if they were trying out. At the side of the brewery is a food truck. Superb customer service!! I was on a mission to pick up some beer for an old friend of mine who now lives in Massachusetts! The guy (in the photo I uploaded) who helped me said that they didn't ship orders but that their customers do all the time! He helped me pick out a few flavors, filled my growlers (I bought 6), and even threw in a few stickers for me to mail off to my friend. While waiting for my growlers to be filled, I also picked out a few T-shirts. They have really cool shirts and hats with their logo. This guy needs a raise!! Or at least a nice atta-boy for his excellence in hospitality!! Thank you! The inside of the brewery also seemed to be a happening spot for friends to gather and I think I even witnessed a couple on their first date! Cuuuteee Okay, I can't make my review any more spectacular, but since my first visit here, I've been asked to stop in for several friends. I'm becoming the beer delivery girl! Today, I stopped in around 2:30 not realizing they didn't open until 4pm... the door was open and a guy in the back was realllly nice, explaining that they open at 4. I really enjoyed my visit here and my only regret is that I didn't get to take any beer back with me. The tasting room is super laid back, basically in one of those anonymous business parks that you find all along here. It's still a working brewery, not a brewpub so the space for seating is at a premium. However, the beer selections are awesome, they're known a lot for IPAs but their sours are good and tasty with a lot of balance. The tasting room staff are very friendly and seemed to have a never ending well of patience when people would come by and ask the same questions over and over. Dealing with beer nerds seems to require a level of patience that borders on sainthood. read more

Monkish Brewing is a craft beer lovers heaven. This brewery is tucked away in the back of an industrial center and is nothing fancy on the outside. As soon as you enter their building you are in the tasting room. Here they have what beers they are serving for that day, their merchandise, and where they pour your beer. You can check to see what beers they are pouring and what beers they have for growler fills on their website. Also in this room is where you will find their restroom. Once you get your beer you enter the brewery and this is where they have seats and tables. It's really cool drinking your beers in the same place they were made. The brewing equipment is pretty cool to look at. There is a tv on the wall and the sound of 90's hip hop is in the background. The music is at the perfect level. Not to loud to make it hard to talk but loud enough to hear it if you want to. Monkish always has food trucks that come to serve food. You can always check their website to see what trucks will be there on the date you go. On this trip it was a pizza oven truck. The pizza was sooo good and the parmesan garlic wings were great too. I finally made it and my only regret is that I let it take a few years. Parking entrance is on Western, just south of the burger place. Not a ton of parking though if you come when it's already busy. Dog friendly too. Arrived just before 4PM on a Thursday and there was already a line waiting for them to open. I would say around 5PM is when it became a standing room area as all the tables were taken. That was probably the only downside: a small seating area. Over the course of five hours, I tried about 7 beers and not one let me down. A couple were great, but the rest were all excellent. In fact, I would say one TIPA was probably the best IPA I have ever had. Most beers are 12oz as a full pour ($7-8) and 6oz as half ($4-5). The only bummer was that they weren't offering splashes so I could try one beer before buying it in cans. I would easily make the 30 mile drive again to come back but when their Anaheim location opens, I will be so very happy. read more

Monkish brewing had me under their spell for a long time, kind of still do but the obsession wore off some. Well maybe. I guess it's just not as all consuming as it was for longer than I care to admit. Found out about Monkish while they were only doing car side pickup and their tasting room was closed due to covid. They have a ravenous following and I was part of that for a year or so. They do drops of new beer on average a couple times a week on Instagram and can sell out in minutes - especially their glassware which is extremely coveted by fans. The beer itself is amazing and has their own unique style to it. If you like it, then you typically LOVE it and the different variations and putting out new beers weekly have followers coming back in droves. The incredible artwork and fun names for each beer only add to their recipe for success. I slowed down after amassing a pretty substantial collection. They have a cool community in which you can trade different beer and/or glassware. The people working are always friendly and they have a great system set up for car side pickup. Overall, great unique beer and super fun system of new beer drops frequently and the occasional glassware drop that has a certain magic to it. I am definitely a fan of this place. Come for great beers, a friendly experience, and a good time. The place is definitely a little hard to find as it is inside of a of business park area. Parking can be a little messy because there it is quite a popular brewery and the parking situation is an aisle with lots of traffic. Inside is quite small for a brewery, which is the very downside. They only have a counter with two people serving, and a huge line forms on the outside. Wait can be quite long, but it's worth it. They have a wide variety of beers on tap which is amazing for a brewery like this. I opted for a hazy IPA and a stout they had which were both amazing. The hazy IPA was definitely a favorite of the two which had a crisp citrus notes and a fruity complex. The stout was definitely a banger too. Nice rich flavor profile, yet not too sweet. Talk about a complete turnaround. This is it!!! They made great beers before but weren't getting a lot of love. Now with their east coast resemblance of a tropical, passion fruit, hazy, yellow, fun loving IPA, they are knocking it out of the park. The only drawback with making different and better beer is everyone wants some. The lines have been crazy with up to an hour wait to get a beer or growler fill and another 20 minutes to get the growler filled. The parking can be heavy at times, but spots seem to open up quickly as many are just stopping in for growler fills. They have some tasty pretzels to munch on while you enjoy your beer as well as some cool music to jam to. I'm a much bigger fan of their IPA's versus Belgian offerings. Def my favorite brewery in Torrance~ If you are an ipa lover, this is a must go location. Atmosphere is lively, there was already a line within 30 minutes of opening. Brewery is quite small and seating is pretty limited. Because they were releasing beers that day, there was a huge crowd of people trying to buy them. Staff is very friendly here, despite the crowd they let me try different types of IPA before I settled for some. They let you choose two 4 Oz pours at a time and get more later. Each ranging from $3-4. I got the Monk Magic Dynasty, Atimatically, and Unfold Scroll. The Monk Magic Dynasty was super refreshing, not overly hoppy and hazy. Atimatically and Unfold scroll we're very good as well, both are stronger on hops and more citrus. They also have 2-3 light beers and sours if you arnt into IPAs. There are very few of the farmhouse ales, saissons and Belgian beers that made this a "go to" place at the start of the craft beer revolution in the South Bay. I love beer, so I feel like any specialty brewery I go to will always be a great time. Monkish brewing didn't let me down. It's a bit small, but we managed to get lucky and find a table for the 5 of us. 4 more joined later, but it was still ok. Most tables are high tables with people standing around. Dogs were also roaming which is a plus! Another plus is that there is a pizza truck right outside so satisfy all the drunk cravings. Overall very fun place with card/board games and great beer. Someone made a good point and I figured I should mention it, too. Maybe save some of you dummies: This beer is SUPER STRONG. Yea...it's smooth, well balanced, nice finish with a sweet combination of flavors, floral notes, etc... but this shit will knock you on your ass QUICK and unexpectedly!! Please keep that in mind, especially if you're driving. I got a little paranoid going back to my car, so I stayed, ate & drank water till the buzz wore off. I was dragged into this place by Mr. and Mrs. C & F. Oh ok, not so much dragged, but carefully guided. Monkish has a special place in their heart and it was a privilege to be treated to such an experience. Monkish is in an industrial area, has small and simple signage, but is a treasure once you find it. There are only a few tables and there are simple snacks offered, but no food menu. After all, you don't come to Monkish for the comfy seats or the food, you come for the beer. I had the 4 tasters for $7, they were all delicious, however there were a few standouts for me. There was a steady stream of people coming to fill their growlers while we were there, I think once I narrow down my favorite I will be standing behind them. There is nothing that hits the spot more than a nice, cold beer on a hot day. My friends and I planned, in advance, to visit Monkish on March 14th. What we didn't plan for, however, was for the heat wave that weekend, and also for the 3 year anniversary of Monkish. Needless to say, the brewery was packed. Since it was the anniversary, Monkish was offering a larger selection of taps on the rotating menu. Unfortunately, they were not offering any flights that day, which is a shame because most of the beers were Belgians (my favorite) and I would have loved to sample several. I've discovered that finding a brewery that has mostly Belgians is a bit of a challenge since most people prefer IPAs, so I appreciate Monkish more than most. Flights are normally $8 for some very generous pours though, so it's a very good deal. There are a few selections out there with a pretty high ABV%, so be careful, they REALLY pack a punch. They don't serve food, but there is free peanuts and pretzels, and you are allowed to bring your own food. The brewery is mid-sized but seating is limited. The "chairs" are really rice sacks on barrels. Not exactly cushy for your tush, but after a few of the beers, who cares... ps: They are very pet friendly, so feel free to bring your best friend if they are on their best behavior! read more

Our second stop on a little beer tour through South Bay. They have a little separate room where you can order the beer, and another space where you can just hang out while drinking beer. I like the set up, and it might be my favorite microbrewery in this area so far. I liked all the beers I tried (did the sampler), and I liked that you could order some snacks while you were drinking (pistachio nuts, pretzels, peanuts, etc). Not only was the service friendly and nice, the customers were super nice too. Met a couple of really nice people. I love nice drunk people! (there are plenty that get angry or sad, which is not my cup of tea... or cup of alcohol, I should say) I even liked that they had little words on the containers of beer (not sure what you'd call them). Monk Juice!! This brewery is not only my favorite brewery in California, it is my favorite brewery in the nation. I have been an avid fan of Monkish for 2 solid years now but unfortunately have only visited their tap room on three occasions. Each visit, their IPA's are always filled with the Tropical, Melon, & Juice characters that keeps us coming back for more. On my last visit, they even had two American Wild Ale offerings which were very nice for a change. They offer Bottles and Growlers to-go of whatever they have in their inventory. I recommend paying them a visit earlier in the day because they do run out of offerings on-tap. They are also dog friendly, so bring your pooch along as you will be here for a few hours! I am very fortunate that my group of beer friends go to their releases monthly and I am able to enjoy a variety of their highly sought after product. This was one of the first micro breweries I tried and really enjoyed the atmosphere. Parking is in a private lot and there is plenty of parking. Noise level: Average. Everyone speaks in a normal tone and it is not noisy at all and you can carry on a conversation. Price: Beer flights: 4 for $7. You can also do glass, pints, or growler as well. What to get, or not: There is free pretzel and peanuts to enjoy with your drink. They are ok with you bringing in your own food as well. Beer flights: I recommend getting this since this will give you the option to try the different types of beer they have. You order at the counter. They will give you a list of beer and 4 wooden tokens. Each token is redeemable for 1 beer flight, which is about 3 ounces. The list of beer is from the lightest (less ABV) to the strongest/darkest beer. When you pick your beer, start from the TOP and go DOWN. This will prevent the darker beer from overwhelming the lighter ones. You redeem each token at a time. They wash out your glass each time. It is kind of hilarious to drink beer out of wine glasses though. Their current beer on tap is as follow from lightest to darkest (most ABV): Crux (5.3% ABV): flavored with elderflowers. I love cocktails with elderflowers so I knew I would like this very light and refreshing beer. This is definitely a drink to get and highly recommended. Oblate (6.3% ABV): this is blended with chamomile. This was kind of weird since I associate chamomile with tea. The taste was kind of odd. Simcoe (6.4% ABV): hoppy pale. This was so good! The taste was very full and bold. However, it does not have a bitter taste, which I really like in a beer. There is not a lot of ABV either so you can drink away. I like this Koine (7.7% ABV): hoppy golden ale. What is the difference from the St. Simcoe? I'm not even sure. Rosa's Hips: there is a hint of rosehips in here. You can barely taste it. Shaolin Fist (7.0% ABV): HELLO. This is a good beer. It has Sichuan peppercorn in it, which is the first time I have ever had beer with peppercorn in it. It gives it a spicy taste, which is very interesting in a good way. Anomaly (8.5% ABV): This is a strong beer since we are entering the dark beer territory. I like this beer simply because it has a full flavor. It just bold and smooth, the way a beer should taste. Feminist (9.4% ABV): this has a light hibiscus taste to it. Although it is a dark beer, there is still some sweetness to it. It is an interesting blend. Seme Della Vita (9.8% ABV): flavored with pistachios and vanilla. This blend was interesting, but not in a good way. I recommend that you skip this. I took one for the team. I am surprised that it is still on their menu. Someone must be liking it. Caffe' Della Vita (9.8% ABV): coffee beer. Have you ever tried it? Most microbrews have their own version of a coffee-beer. I really like the one here since they use Portola Coffee, which already has a bold flavor. You can taste a hint of the beer. Surprise, surprise, it has the Sme Della Vita in it, which I disliked above. That is how strong the coffee flavor is. You only realized it is more than just coffee once you get a little tipsy. Great for late night office sessions, I guess. Magnificat (12.6 ABV): pretty here there is more than just beer here. This drink was strong...perhaps like a cocktail? Bourbon-barrel aged gives this beer the strong ABV. I'm a liquid person, so I like to drink a lot of liquid. With the high ABV, I do not think I could do that for this beer.
