For the cost, I was pleasantly surprised- the chef sashimi plate had large thick cuts of fish that were fresh and tasted well. I also got a roll wrapped in cucumber (no rice) and despite it having too much mayo (I don't like mayo on my sushi) it was delicious. The tuna tataki was good but not something I would order again- it was definitely over seared. My partner had the gyoza and chicken fried rice- both were mediocre. For what you pay for, it's certainly decent sushi especially for takeout, I can't complain! The service is quick, and everything tasted reasonably fresh. I highly recommend checking out their Uber Eats promos as they have really good BOGO deals. I was really craving some sushi and I saw this place on Uber eats. The menu had some good specials so I gave them a try despite spotty reviews. I was expecting average not great. Was I ever disappointed. I would have to rate worst sushi I have ever had. Every piece of sushi had this TOO warm UNsticky rice that falls apart and warmed the fish to an unpleasant level. The whole set was so sloppy it looked like an actual monkey had smeared it into the container. There was not a spec of wasabi anywhere. None on the ebi and none on the side. The tako was so chewy I had to spit it out. They didn't even get the order right. I got things I didn't order while others were missing. Everything was mushy in texture and low on flavor. I also ordered some tempura which was so soggy. This wasn't just from sitting in the unvented plastic container. There was actual globs of uncooked batter all over it. Trust me.... literally the worst sushi place in downtown Toronto. Both my brother and I vomitted on our way out, the fish was not fresh. Never mind the poor selection or the taste of some of their other food which was bland or slathered in sauce. I was so excited to eat some sushi because of the reviews but we were misled, I didn't even eat that much. the AC was on and i was breaking a sweat, literally dripping from my face, i was pale and my stomach was hurting. It was just ok. Not the best I've ever had, not the worst. Prices were reasonable. None of us got sick or felt ill after eating the raw fish, so that was good. And the avocado was fresh and perfectly ripe. Surprised to see it so busy! A bunch of people waiting for take-out and lots of delivery app drivers coming to pick food up. The rolls were haphazardly put together and I don't think the dynamite roll had any shrimp tempura. Also, one of the rolls was advertised as "butterfish" but I'm fairly certain it was salmon. The only reason we came here is because my daughter requested sushi for her birthday, and the other two places we usually go to were closed. We ordered takeout from Monkey Sushi and the wait was very short. We ordered two of both the Red California roll and Spicy tuna and salmon roll. Both rolls were average, there was a decent amount of filling but the rice was a bit too soft and the rolls were not tightly formed. We ordered sushi from here the other night but there were some flaws. I ordered some pretty basic rolls such as salmon avocado and butterfish avocado due to food intolerances. Unfortunately, my butterfish avocado was delivered as a spicy butterfish avocado, meaning there were tempura flakes in my roll. Considering I have am gluten intolerant, this was a problem for me. I ate the roll because we didn't want to drive back to the restaurant but it left me feeling sick with major digestive issues. If I knew it would make me as sick as it did I wouldn't have eaten it. The salmon avocado roll was ok. The salmon wasn't as fresh as our go-to restaurant but it was made correct without the tempura flakes. Would we go back? It's not likely. read more

Is Monkey Sushi the best sushi in Toronto? Not by any stretch of the imagination. Is it fast, cheap, and tasty? Yes! I never got the hype around Bloor Street sushi spots. They don't really stand out to me. Monkey Sushi fits into that category of sushi restaurants that do serve passable sushi, but don't necessarily excel at it. With their new location on Ossington, I'm beginning to see the appeal. Sometimes you just want to fill your tummy with sushi, despite the fact that the rice to filling ratio might be a little high, or that the fish on the nigiri isn't perfectly cut, or that the rolls fall apart just a little. If this were priced any higher, I'd be a lot less inclined to see the appeal, but it's priced well and - perhaps most importantly - it's very close. It also helps that the staff here are really sweet and cheery. When the offerings aren't at 100, a strong staff can go a long way. Good luck guys! read more

So for this calibre of sushi (aka middle ground, better than grocery store but not top notch) it's pretty decent. I got a 2 for 1 deal and I wondered If it was pre-made. I have been ordering from this restaurant and their Ossington location through Uber forever. Not only they don't honour their reward and partnership with Uber, they avoid your calls. I called this restaurant tonite inquiring about the rewards and ended up with two intoxicated females. The so called manager was out of this world with her annoying and obnoxious behaviour. The lady at night shift on Sunday, March 6th should be fired. AS A CHEF I CAN TELL HER THAT, SHE DOSE NOT BELONG TO THIS INDUSTRY. I'm a long time Monkey Sushi customer. Used to order from them in the annex, and now do from their Ossington location. Last time I ordered from them, they forgot an appetizer. I called them right away and they said they would give me a free appetizer on my next order. Today was my next order. I called them and they had my name on record right away, and gave me my free appetizer right away. Great costumer service, and even better sushi. This was disappointing. First off when I called to order the person taking my order did not have a clear command of the English language as I had asked 2 times if I could substitute something and after much explaining and an obvious lack of understanding on their part the response was at first yes and then let me ask my manager. I finally gave my order to the manager. Frustrating to say the least. The price was not what was listed on their menu!!! Even the menus given to me in my order had the price I was expecting. The only menu with the price I had to pay was at the restaurant. There was a $2 different on all the items I purchased. This is clearly an unethical business practice. The food itself, mediocre at best and according to my daughter their rolls are prepackaged and certainly not fresh. This made sense considering the way it was packaged.
